Columbus Day Fun Facts• It commemorates Columbus' arrival inthe Americas on October 12, 1492.However it is always celebrated on thesecond Monday of October.• Cowboys might do well to call Columbustheir patron saint. After all, it wasColumbus who introduced horses to theAmericas. Technically, a breed of horsesexisted in the Americas beforehand butmigrated away to other parts of the world.• Many think of Columbus' fleet as includ-ing three ships - the Nina, the Pinta andthe Santa Maria. But, in truth, only twoships managed to make the full roundtrip. The Santa Maria was wrecked onChristmas Day in 1492.• Columbus Day first became a state holi-day in 1906 in Colorado, and first becamea federal holiday in 1937. However, threestates (Hawaii, Alaska and South Dakota)do not recognize it at all.

Hello Again,

If a yarn is worth writing about once, then it should be worth reading twice. We published Ed’s yarn

back on September 13, 2010.

While my friend Ed is a right upstanding sort of fellow, on occasions he is apt to tell a yarn which

smacks more of Irish blarney. You can decide if you can accept it as gospel truth, or if the truth was

helped out a little bit.

Ed tells this story, or yarn, in such a downright serious manner, one could be tempted to become

a believer in his words.

“When we were young, our family was very poor. Just to survive, Dad kept a cow for milk and

butter, a few hens for eggs and chicken dinners, along with a few pigs. One night a thief broke into

the barn, stole some eggs and a couple of our best laying hens and ventured further into the pigpen

and took a couple of piglets.

Both Dad and Mom were so sure it would happen again, they moved the sow with her piglets into

our house for safekeeping.

For the next few years Mom would take the table scraps along with leftover mixed pig rations and

feed the pigs in the cellar.

One morning, Mom slipped and got hurt on the cellar stairs. Dad, being the inventive type, cut an

8-inch hole in the floor under the kitchen table. After that we just tossed our scraps while we were

eating down through the hole to the pigs in the cellar.

A busy-body type neighbor heard about the pigs being kept in our cellar and called the Board of

Health. One day, a health agent showed up at our door. Mom answered her knock which seemed extra

loud and sharp. There she stood in her gray flannel suit holding her wooden cane, which had been used

to rap on our front door and asked if the complaint about the pigs was true. ‘Oh yes!’ Mom said, and

invited her in to see the pigs through the hole under the kitchen table. To say the least, the agent

was flabbergasted and with an all-knowing voice looking over her glasses and down her nose to Mom

asked, ‘Don’t you realize how terribly unhealthy this is? It will cause all kinds of disease and sickness.’

All Mom replied was, ‘I don’t think so, we’ve been feeding the hogs that way for several years and not

one of the pigs has ever gotten sick.’”

So — what has that got to do with the price of milk or where a bread earner can find a job?

Is it possible that this is another example, however humorous, of the government sticking its nose

into something that was none of its business?

The assured facts are that the house and the pigs belonged to Ed’s family. No pigs or people ever

came down with a life threatening disease, and the pigs were fed and raised by Ed’s folks, not the

government.

We can also assume the government health department lady was on the government payroll and

arrived at the family house by a car which belonged to the government, using up tires, oil, and

gasoline paid for in part by Ed’s family and other taxpayers.

Ed’s family did not request government assistance or intervention or want any.

Naturally the not-needed or not-requested government lady could expect a lifetime job with

healthcare and retirement. Statistics would prove that her department and cost would grow every

year.

Page 7: Valley Pennysaver 10.6.12

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • October 6, 2012 Page 7

I ponder — is this not an appropriate example of how our county, state and national

governments keep on sticking our unwanted, unneeded noses into other countries’ business?

Where do we get the right to know what’s best for them? How about this for a little pondering:

During the Second World War, Japan, Germany, and Italy were our enemies. During the 1950s,

Japan, Germany, and Italy were wonderful friends and allies. During the Second World War, the

Russians were our buddies and by the 1950s our biggest enemy. It seems we cannot even figure out

who our friends are, yet we can teach them how to manage their own countries by outfitting them

with a U.S. military base, lend or give them huge amounts of money (money which we borrowed), and

feel we can sit in judgment.

Now we are faced with another problem: One of our major U.S. political candidates is advocating

a bigger and naturally a more controlling government.

The other political candidate claims he will cut down the size of our federal government, reducing

cost and control over “we the people.”

Now to answer the question, what has this got to do with the price of milk or where a bread

earner can find a job?

If we had fewer government paid employees which cost U.S. businesses tons, the price of milk

could be lower and companies could have more employees. United States corporations presently

pay the highest taxes in the world. It’s a fact: higher taxes, fewer employees.

Soon it will be decision time. What form of government do we want? Rather, what form of

government are you going to vote for?

It’s fall again with cool days and colder nights. The leaves are turning more colorful every day.

Soon the geese will be flying overhead. You’ve heard the expression, “Dumber than a goose!” Guess

who spends its summer in the beautiful north and winters in the south? Don’t believe everything you

hear.

A fancy big touring car pulled up near an old timer sitting on a stump near a cluster of

mailboxes and asked, “Have you lived here all your life?” “Not yit,” was the reply. “Old timer, where

does this road go?” “Lived here for nigh-on-to 80 years and it hasn’t gone anywhere yet.” “Well then,

if you were going to go to Cooperstown, which way would you turn?” “If I was going there, I wouldn’t

start from here.” “Well sir, which way would you tell me not to go?” “If you go up this road until you

come to the Schenevus turn, I wouldn’t go that way.”

“By the way, old timer, does Jim Morton live here?” “Nope.” “Do you know where he lives?” “Yep, he

lives in that house over there.” “How long have you known Jim?” “All my life.” “Do you think he might

be home now?” “Nope, he’s not and won’t be for another hour or so.”

“Well thanks, old timer. We appreciate your help. By the way, what’s your name?” “Glad I could help,

stranger. Come back again — my name is Jim Morton.”

Today’s weather is overcast, wet and on the chilly side, but if we wait for a few days this area will

be blessed with beautiful warmth and fall colors. To be on the safe side — if you go for a walk, take

your bumbershoot with you.

Looking forward while being grateful for today is a secret for happiness which God shares with

all.

Prayer does work. I pray for you, your good health, and for the future of this nation. Our nation

under God — yours and mine. He is our God, and this is our nation.

Many are familiar with the“spork,” a clever inventioncombining a spoon and fork, giving people the ease of eating a meal without havingto switch back and forthbetween utensils. It is consid-ered a staple camping gear tomany “outdoorsy” types.

The tool pictured herefollows a similar idea as thespork, this time combiningfork with a knife. Far morethan for just camping conven-ience, this tool — popularlyreferred to as a “Nelson Knife”— was invented for individuals with prostheticarms or weak hand grips. It isfashioned using a “rockerknife” for leverage when cut-ting and sharp tines on the tipfor stabbing the food. Somehave explained it as a pointycheese knife without theholes.

The Nelson Knife hasn’tchanged much over the years. The handles have becomemore padded, some have oneor more tines than picturedhere, but the stainless steelblade is still fashioned usingthe same engineering anglesas the original.

When purchasing a Nelson

Knife, do not feel obligated topay through the nose for anantique! Those looking forsomething more practical caneasily find a Nelson Knife inthe $10-15 range after somelight internet searches. Also, haunt your local thrift storesand garage sales for suchtreasures.

Canal Schooner Lois McClure providesa tour of history through out the

Mohawk Valleyby Elizabeth A. Tomlin

You may have been fortunateenough to view the LoisMcClure traveling the ErieCanal for an 1812Bicentennial Tour over thepast few weeks. Hundreds ofschool children did.

The schooner docked intowns along the Canal allowingfolks to come aboard and havea chance to take a tour andlearn the history behind thereplica.

The Lois McClure HistorianArt Cohen, who is also theproject director, stated that thedesign of the schooner wascreated from the remains oftwo other schooners recoveredfrom the bottom of LakeChamplain.

The schooner, which is afull-scale replica of a typical1886 canal boat, was con-structed in Vermont. It is fullyfunctional and is being used tocommemorate the 200thanniversary of the U.S. decla-ration of the War of 1812 on a4-month tour of New York,Vermont, and Canada.

The program, which present-ed reviews the cultural, envi-ronmental and political statusof the international War of1812, both commemorates thewar and celebrates the result-ing 200 years of peace. It is

sponsored in part by the LakeMaritime Museum and theNYS Canal Corporation.

“We’ve had a couple of hun-dred kids from local schoolsaboard today to tour theschooner,” stated Cohen at theCanajoharie Riverfront Park.“It provides an opportunity forthem to connect with history.”

Cohen explained toCanajoharie and Ephratahresidents about raising themasts on the schooner. “Ittakes four hours to raise andlower them,” he stated. A crane

is used to accomplish this feat.Crewmember Kerry Batdorf,

who is also the schooner’s car-penter, said that there are ninepermanent crewmembersonboard the craft the wholeseason. Four of those are regu-lar employees, while the othersare volunteers.

Launched in 2004, the LoisMcClure schooner was namedin honor of Lois McClure, ofBurlington, VT. McClure andher husband were major con-tributors to the building of thesailing vessel.

The Canal Schooner Lois McClure replica traveled through the ErieCanal docking at towns along the way so folks could learn its his-tory.

by Martha FilipicLate last school year, I

was surprised when myson’s school said he wasbullying another student. He is about to start thefourth grade and I’m notsure what to say to him tomake sure he doesn’t dothis again. Any advice?

First, it sounds like youhave already taken animportant first step: Ad-mit that your child was inthe wrong. It’s a difficultmindset for many parentsto adopt, but it’s vital toget past the stage of de-nial so you can begin toaddress the problem.

Child development pro-fessionals say that chil-dren who become bulliesare often modeling behav-ior they see in others. Hasyour son himself been

bullied? Has he witnessedor been the victim of actsof aggression, intimida-tion or violence at homeor at school? Don’t makethe mistake of assumingyou would know if yourson had been exposed tosuch experiences. Chil-dren are often afraid orembarrassed to tell adultsabout their victimization,or believe it wouldn’t doany good anyway.

• Studies on childrenwho bully others hasfound that bullies tend to:

• Have higher levels ofanger.

• Believe that manipu-lation or intimidationworks better than nonvio-lent strategies when deal-ing with others.

• Be good at hiding neg-ative behavior from

adults.• Accept aggression as

justifiable.• Enjoy feelings of pow-

er and control.• Be unhappy at school

and lack a sense of be-longing there.

• Be impulsive.• Have feelings of de-

pression.• Have problems at

home.• Blame others for their

actions.It’s important to try to

understand where thebullying behavior is com-ing from, but it’s evenmore important to ad-dress the issue directlywith your son:

• Make it clear that bul-lying is unacceptable. Es-tablish clear rules andconsequences for break-

ing those rules, and beconsistent in your follow-through. Be sure to usenon-violent, non-physicalmethods of discipline.

• Be sure you’re model-ing appropriate behaviorin your own actions withyour son and with others.Be assertive, not aggres-sive, and treat others with

kindness and respect.• Help your son find

non-aggressive ways tointeract with others.

• Talk to your sonabout how it feels to bebullied, and help himbuild empathy for others.

• Keep in close contactwith your son’s teachersand the school counselor

to seek help in changingyour son’s behavior.

• Spend more time withyour son and praise himwhen he acts appropri-ately.

• If the bullying per-sists, seek professionalcounseling or an evalua-tion by a mental healthprofessional.

According to Webster’sDictionary, debt is de-fined as “the state of ow-ing.” Most commonly, theword debt is used in ref-erence to money that isowed to various creditorsas in the case of debt in-curred through loans andcredit cards. How do youknow when you have tak-en on too much debt?Take the following quiz todetermine whether youare using credit wisely orgetting in over your head.

Circle the followingstatements that apply toyou and/or your family:

• Your monthly con-sumer debt payments (donot include a mortgage orrent) are 20 percent ormore of your monthlytake-home pay

• You buy things withcredit cards that youwould not buy if you hadto pay cash for them

• You charge day-to-day expenses, like gasand shampoo, instead ofpaying for them with cash

• You are at or near thelimit of your lines of cred-it (i.e., you are “maxedout”)

• You pay only the min-

imum amount due onyour credit card billseach month

• You are chronicallylate in paying householdbills and/or debt pay-ments

• You have had late feesassessed on debt pay-ments

• You frequently receive“past due” bill notices inthe mail

• You keep making newcredit purchases so theamount that you owedoes not decrease

• You get new loans orcredit cards to make pay-ments on existing loansor credit cards

• Your family has fre-quent arguments aboutmoney

• You are dishonestwith your spouse aboutyour use of credit and/orshopping habits

• You often have to skippayments on some billsin order to make pay-ments on others (i.e., “billjuggling”)

• You frequently borrowsmall amounts of moneyfrom family members orfriends

• You have had to ask afamily member or friendto cosign a loan

• You use savings to

pay bills that used to bepaid with cash or a check

• You hold more than10 credit cards, includinggasoline and departmentstore cards

• You owe money tomore than seven credi-tors

• You do not know thetotal of what you actuallyowe and are afraid to addit up

• You have to borrowmoney to pay expectedexpenses such as insur-ance premiums and taxes

• You have been turneddown for a credit card ora loan within the last sixmonths

• You put off medicaland dental visits becauseyou can not afford them

• You frequently get be-hind on utility paymentsand have had utilitiesthreaten to shut off serv-ice

• You have been threat-ened by creditors with le-gal action or repossessionof your car

• You would be in im-mediate financial distressif you were unable towork or lost your job

• You frequently“bounce” checks or relyon the overdraft protec-tion feature of your

checking account• You write post-dated

checks and/or get cashadvances from paydaylending companies

• You are experiencingan ever-widening gap be-tween your income and

household expenses• You think of credit

more as a form of “cash”rather than a source ofdebt

• You are an impulsiveor compulsive spender(a.k.a., a “shopaholic”)

• You have borrowedagainst life insurancewith little chance of re-payment

• Your credit reportlists one or more negative

items (e.g., late pay-ments, car repossession,collection actions, liens,and charged-off debts)

• You have a negativenet worth (i.e., your debtsare greater than your as-sets)

• You worry about mon-ey and/or feel stress re-lated to your personal fi-nances

If you circled five ormore of the above state-ments, you are clearly ex-hibiting multiple warningsigns of excessive debt. The more items that youchecked, the more seri-ous your debt problemprobably is. Take thetime to honestly evaluate

your cash flow patternsand use of credit and de-velop strategies to bringyour spending into linewith your income. Yoursituation is not hopeless, but it will take a commit-ment to correct the situa-tion and get back on theroad to financial security.

What can you do to re-gain control of your fi-nances and reduce debt?First, try to reduce yourexpenses (even furtherthan you may alreadyhave) and investigatepossible ways to increaseor extend your income. For example, you mayqualify for assistancefrom government or non-profit agencies. Specifictypes of programs includefood stamps, low-incomeenergy assistance, andunemployment compen-sation. Also, contact yourcreditors to explain yourfinancial difficulties. Dothis, preferably, beforeyou make a late paymentand try to work out a re-alistic payment schedule.

You may also want tocontact a non-profit cred-it counseling agency forassistance. A credit coun-selor may be able to nego-tiate payment conces-sions from your creditorsand can help you repayoutstanding debt throughmonthly payments thatare distributed amongthose you owe money to.Another helpful resourceto get out of debt is aPowerPay (see www.pow-erpay.org), an online debtreduction program. Pow-erPay can help you accel-erate debt repayment, thereby reducing both re-payment time and inter-est charges.

by Susan KelleyHere’s another reason

to keep a photo of a lovedon your desk. After recall-ing an upsetting event, thinking about yourmother or romantic part-ner can make you feelbetter and reduce yournegative thinking, ac-cording to a new Cornellstudy. Perhaps most im-portant, it also may re-sult in fewer psychologi-cal and physical healthproblems at least amonth afterward.

“Our own memories canoften be a significantsource of stress. For exam-ple, thinking about a re-cent breakup or underper-forming on an exam usual-ly decreases positive moodand increases negativethinking,” said co-authorVivian Zayas, assistant

professor of psychology.“However, simply thinkingabout an attachment fig-ure, whether it is one’smother or partner, by ei-ther recalling a supportiveinteraction with them orjust viewing their photo-graph, helps people restoretheir mood and decreasesthe tendency to engage innegative thinking.”

The research is the firstto explore the benefits ofthinking about a lovedone when a person expe-riences stress they gener-ate themselves.

Previous research hasfocused on the benefitswhen a person experi-ences externally generat-ed stress, such as physi-cal pain.

“We’re showing the effec-tiveness of a new tech-nique to cope with negative

memories,” said co-authorEmre Selcuk, a Ph.D. can-didate in the graduate fieldof human development.“As compared to priorwork, it is a much less ef-fortful, automatic andspontaneous strategy.”

Past research has alsofocused on emotion regu-lation strategies that canbe employed before en-countering an upsettingevent. “This approach issimilar to wearing a rain-coat to prevent oneselffrom getting wet,”

Zayas said. “But, ineveryday life, it is not al-ways possible to pre-emp-tively deal with upsettingevents. Our work showsthat one way to regulateemotion after thinkingabout an upsetting eventis by simply thinkingabout an attachment fig-ure. It is akin to getting

caught in a thundershower and using a towelto dry yourself off afteryou are already wet.”

The paper appears on-line and in a forthcomingedition of the Journal ofPersonality and SocialPsychology.

To arrive at their con-clusions, the authors de-signed a series of experi-ments in which theyasked study participantsto recall a negative mem-ory and then think of aloved one. In the first ex-periment, participantswere asked to thinkabout a time when theirmothers had been sup-portive. In the second, they looked at a photo-graph of their mothers, and in the third, theylooked at a photograph ofa romantic partner. In thecontrol condition, partici-

pants were asked to thinkabout an interaction withan acquaintance or lookat a photograph of some-one they didn’t know.

After being reminded oftheir loved ones, peoplerecovered faster and wereless susceptible to nega-tive thinking. At least onemonth after the experi-ment, those who benefit-ed the most from beingreminded of the lovedones reported fewer phys-ical or psychologicalhealth problems.

The research has impli-cations for mental andphysical health, the au-thors say, because an in-ability to cope with nega-tive memories — that is,recalling them repeatedly— is a major predictor ofpsychological and physi-cal health problems fromdepression and general

anxiety disorders to car-diovascular disease.

And the technique iseasy to integrate into dai-ly life, Selcuk said.

“If you’re moving to anew city, put a picture ofyour loved ones on thefridge. If you get a sup-portive text message froma loved one, just store itin your cell phone so youcan retrieve it later.”

The other authors areCornell’s Gül Günaydin,a Ph.D. candidate in thefield of psychology, andCindy Hazan, associateprofessor of human de-velopment, and EthanKross, assistant proces-sor of psychology at theUniversity of Michigan.

The research was sup-ported by Cornell’s Insti-tute for the Social Sci-ences and the President’sCouncil of Cornell Women.

Painful memory? Think about a loved one, study says

(ARA) — For those con-sidering buying a home, the current real estatemarket presents someunique opportunities. One of the side effects ofthe economic roller coast-er ride of the past fewyears is that home priceshave gone down andmore homes have gone onthe market. For buyers, that means more choicesand better deals. Howev-er, those same tumul-tuous years also can alsoteach buyers a lesson:Make smart buying deci-sions and be wise withyour finances.

Impulsive buying isnever a good idea when itcomes to a purchase assignificant as a home, butit was something of atrend at the height of themid-2000s. Now, withbanks lending far morecautiously, you need tobe absolutely certain that

your finances are in order— and healthy — to beable to get the best dealon your purchase.

There are a number ofsteps you can take to getready to buy a home, andyou might need to workon them simultaneously.Consider that you’ll needto start saving, if youhaven’t already, but you’llalso need to review yourcredit score and do whatyou can to either main-tain it or work towardhealthier credit. Both ofthese tasks will helpmake the home-buyingprocess better for you.

Your credit is an impor-tant factor in determiningthe terms under whichyou can get a mortgage.Broadly speaking, thebetter your credit is, themore positively you’ll beviewed by lenders — andthat can lead to better in-terest rates. And becauseyou’ll be paying off yourhome for years to come,

it’s important to get thebest rate possible.

Start by checking yourcredit report. You’re enti-tled to one free check ofyour report, from Tran-sUnion and other creditreporting agencies everyyear. As much as youneed to check your reportto find out what shapeyour credit is in, it’s alsoessential to review it forinaccuracies or fraudu-lent activity, both ofwhich can have a nega-tive impact on your score.

If your credit healthneeds some work, starttaking action immediate-ly. Paying bills on time, reducing your overalldebt and limiting newcredit inquiries can allhelp to build your credit— but be patient as it cantake time for your posi-tive actions to take effect.Nevertheless, the sooneryou make the effort, thesooner you’ll see results.

Making a prudent deci-

sion about buying ahouse comes down to anhonest assessment ofwhat you can afford.Keep in mind that youmight be approved for aloan that’s larger thanwhat is practical for youto afford. While it may betempting to buy a pricierhouse, the stress ofstruggling to make pay-ments could diminishyour enjoyment of yournew home and even putyou at financial risk. Onerule of thumb is thatmost borrowers can af-ford a home loan thatruns about two and a halftimes their annual salary.

Buying a home is acomplex process, but onethat is ultimately very re-warding when done right.By organizing your fi-nances well in advance, you’ll help set yourself upfor success. For more in-formation about creditand buying a home, visitwww.transunion.com.
