April 6, 2013
Hello Again,
The Bible says a man cannot be a prophet in his own land. I absolutely do not believe I am
a prophet. What I am is a senior citizen in a land that once was the dreamland for the entire
world. A nation where a poor, hard-working immigrant family could find employment, own a
home and even own their own business and who knows? Maybe someday it might become
General Electric, Carnegie Steel, or even Walmart. The dream was real and it happened over
and over again and still does. A land that offered personal freedom, religious freedom, free
education for 12–13 years. Reduced cost for higher education. Excellent medical care. T.V.
programs mother’s could allow their children to watch. Sunday held as God’s day.
I continue as a senior American citizen who is watching the decay of this most wonderful
country. Our economic way of life is being destroyed. We are holding hands and financially
supporting the largest communist nation on earth. A nation where Christians cannot let it
be known publically they believe in the teachings of God’s holy word, the Bible. A nation that
during the Korean War supported our enemy, the North Koreans. It has been said, our
country buys more manufactured goods from China than any other and at the same time
borrowing money from the Chinese government to buy from Chinese manufacturers.
Does it create a tingle all over your body with excitement to know that we are closing our
U.S. factories, putting U.S. citizens out of work so we can feed millions upon millions of
dollars every day into the communist country of China?
In the 1920s, we passed anti-trust laws in this country to protect U.S. customers and
businesses from unfair trade practices. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know how many
American dollars are spent in China and how much China purchases from the U.S.? Talk about
unfair trade practices.
I guess we are not supposed to talk or think that way. Just buy ourselves down the drain,
shrug our shoulders and wonder how it happened.
Should our prayer not only be “God bless America,” but “God protect us from those in
Washington D.C. who could reverse this slaughter but just ignore it.”?
I believe Nikita Khrushchev said, “Communism – socialism – would take over the United
States without ever firing a shot.”
I will repeat what I penned a few months ago. The dictionary definition of capitalism (the
American system) and socialism (the Russian, Chinese, and Cuban systems).
Capitalism: The economic system in which production and distribution are privately owned
and operated for profit.
Socialism: A theory of the ownership and operation of the means of production and
distribution by society, with all members sharing in the work and products – or a political
movement for establishment of such a system.
We are a capitalist nation not a socialist nation. Russia, China and Cuba are socialist. We
are the owners of our homes, villages and businesses.
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • April 6, 2013 Page 7
In the November 17, 2012 Hello Again, I penned, “When a socialist says he became rich
through hard work, ask him whose hard work and write a book of fiction about it.”
In the good old days, we read about the “Cowboys and Indians.” In the 30’s and 40’s, “Cops
and Robbers,” and now we read about “the Democrats and the Republicans.” At one time,
you knew the good guys from the bad guys. Now you can’t tell them apart. In fact, it is even
more confusing. Now days our representatives in Albany and Washington no longer vote their
convictions but their party line.
So if their party is rotten, their vote will be rotten too. It’s more than obvious our
Senators and House members are accustomed to the stink of a rotten barrel. Who knows
if they vote for something they could not possibly read or understand, they can put on their
Lone Ranger mask and hope none of the people back home will see or know.
I wonder if Mr. Obama said, “Skunk cabbage should be the national food,” if even one
Democrat would vote no or even ask, “What is skunk cabbage?” I realize that Mr. Obama is
a powerful speaker and vote getter, but do you think that nearly every member of his
political party should vote in the same way? No one, not one has a different political
opinion? Or do you believe it is morally O.K. to vote against your convictions?
That or this is the way that countries all over the world operated. They were known as
kingships and/or dictatorships. Is that what we want?
I admit I was thinking about our new national health program when I heard this, “If the
Lord’s Ten Commandments had been written up as a federal regulations and issued on
stone, Moses would not have come down from Mount Sinai with two stone tablets. He would
have come down with a double hernia.”
A retired business man said to his wife, “When the time comes, I want a Senator, a
member of the House, along with agents from American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard,
Visa, and the local bank as well as the governor to be my pallbearers. They have been driving
me to my death. The least they can do is finish the job.”
Sometimes I wonder which of the three parties our national and state representatives
belong to; the Republican, Democratic, or cocktail.
I quote John Ruskin, “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces up, snow is
exhilarating. There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good.”
This morning I had reason to doubt or at least to be extra
careful when I put on a stout leather belt and suspenders – both.
Just in case I miss your neighbor, say hello for the both of us.
Remember a stranger is merely a friend you have not met yet.
The real message of Easter is the one to live by. Hope we will
meet in church. Invite a neighbor to attend church with you. It
could be the greatest first step in friendship you will ever take.

This horse picket pin wasused by the United StatesCavalry and represents an eraof warfare much different thanour modern realities. Thoughhorses are no longer an efficientmeans of battle, their history isoften celebrated in reenact-ments, museums and monu-ments nation-wide.
The cavalry was replaced bytank warfare, but that shift wasat a gradual pace. Horse war-fare was common during WorldWar I and after that began tophase out. A few horse cavalryunits remained into World WarII, especially as scouts. AfterWorld War II, horses were usedprimarily for the transport oftroops and supplies and wereno longer part of battle.
Picket pins like these securedthe horses when resting. Theywere very efficient — two ofthese pins, if secure enough,
could hold an entire line ofhorses, depending on the size ofthe ring at top.
Picket rope was often used inthe securing. The rope had asnap hook on each end. Oneend of the rope was clasped onthe horse’s bridle, the otheraround the ring of the picket
pin. Of course, a fence or treewould also secure a horse, sopins were not often used.
Today it is a collector’s item, but not so long ago this simplepiece of iron was a war technol-ogy that remained unchanged, spanning both centuries and continents.

AATTENTIONTTENTIONTAXPAYERS of the TOWN OF PALATINE
The past few months I have been informing you as to how Highway Departments in various townships inMontgomery County handle the plowing of their roads in comparison to the Town of Palatine. The remaining two townships are:
St. Johnsville - 2 Trucks - 28 miles of road
Root - 4 Trucks - 82 miles of road
At a recent Town of Palatine Board meeting, the reason given for the need of 6 trucks to plow 67 miles ofroad was in case of a breakdown. If you recall, 25 years ago the Town of St. Johnsville lost all of their plowtrucks when a fire destroyed the town barn and 6 years ago, the Town of Root lost their entire fleet, alsobecause of fire. THEIR ROADS STILL GOT PLOWED. Also, the Town of St. Johnsville recently did a completeoverhaul on both of their 25 year old trucks. My point being, there are solutions to situations that may ariseother than buying new and these solutions should be considered before approving new purchases.
If the highway superintendents of the townships in Montgomery County followed Palatine HighwaySuperintendent Logan’s approach of needing one truck per 11 miles to plow snow, you would need a totalof 63 trucks to take care of the roads in Montgomery County. That means an additional 21 trucks would beneeded. If those 21 trucks were all purchased at a cost of $215,000.00 each, (the cost of Palatine’s recentpurchase) the taxpayers of Montgomery County would be looking at a total cost of $4.515 million.
I realize there are expenses within the town budget that the board cannot control, which is all the more reason for them to make fiscally responsible decisions on issues that are within their control. A good startwould be with the highway department.
As taxpayers, you have control and that control is:

More fires occurduring the wintermonths than at anyother time. Fortu-nately, taking simpleprecautions can pre-vent most fires. Fol-low the safety tipsbelow to help ensureyour safety:
Portable Heaters• Put at least three
feet of empty spacebetween the heaterand everything else.
• Vacuum andclean the dust andlint from all heaters.
• If the cord getshot, frayed orcracked, have theheater serviced.
• Never use exten-sion cords withportable electricheaters.
• Turn off portableheaters when leavingor sleeping.
• An adult shouldalways be presentwhen anyone isusing a space heateraround children.
• Make sure yourportable electricheater is ULapproved and has atip-over shut offfunction.
Woodstove andFireplace Safety
• Have a certified
chimney sweep cleanand inspect your fire-place.
• Place ashes out-doors in a coveredmetal container atleast three feet awayfrom anything thatburns.
• To prevent fluefires, burn dry, well-seasoned wood.
• Always use a fire-place screen made ofsturdy metal or heat-tempered glass. Ifchildren are present, use a special child-guard screen.
GeneratorsCarbon monoxide
(CO) is an invisiblekiller. You cannot seeor smell it. A genera-tor's exhaust con-tains poisonous CO,which can kill you ina matter of minutes.Follow these impor-tant generator safetytips:
• Never use aportable generatorinside a home, garage, shed or otherpartially enclosedspace, even if doorsand windows areopen.
• Place portablegenerators outsideonly, far away fromthe home. Keep the
generator away fromopenings to thehome, includingdoors, windows, andvents.
• Read the label onthe generator andthe owner's manual, and follow theinstructions.
• Install CO alarmswith battery backupin the home outsideeach sleeping area.
• Get to fresh airimmediately if youstart to feel sick, weak or dizzy. COpoisoning from expo-sure to generatorexhaust can quicklylead to incapacita-tion and death.
• Be sure generatorfuel is properly andsafely stored.
• Always refuel thegenerator outdoorsand away from anyignition sources.
• If you choose tohave a generator per-manently connectedto your home's elec-trical system, makesure a licensed elec-trician installs it andbe sure to notify yourelectric company.
Candles• Place candles in
sturdy, fireproof can-dleholders where
they cannot beknocked over.
• Make sure allcandles are outbefore going to bed orleaving the house.
• Keep candles, matches, andlighters out of chil-dren's reach.
• Keep candlesaway from Christmastrees, evergreen clip-pings, decorations, presents, and wrap-ping paper.
Smoke Alarms andHome Escape Plans
• Install smokealarms outside eachsleeping area and ineach bedroom.
• Test and vacuumyour smoke alarmseach month to makesure they are work-ing.
• Smoke alarms 10years old or olderneed to be replacedwith new units.
• Know two waysout of every room.
• Practice yourescape plan withyour whole family atleast twice a year.
• Do not attempt togo back into a burn-ing home.

We Carry The #1 Brandsin the Home Improvement Industry!
by Samantha MazzottaCrooked door needs repair
Q: The antique door to our bathroom is solidoak. Unfor-tunately, it’s no longer closingstraight — the door latch is lower than thehardware on the frame. It’s also scraping thefloor when it’s opened and closed. How can werepair this? — Cliff, West Hartford, CT
A: Fixing this problem can be as simple asadjusting the hinge pins of the door, or ascomplex as resetting them (which isn’t toocomplex, it’s just a two-person job).
Sticking, dragging doors — or doors thatwon’t close completely — can have a numberof causes. In newer houses, a door’s hingesmight have been placed incorrectly, or themortise of the door might not be deep enough(or too deep). Checking the depth of the mor-tise is simple: run a finger along the hinge leafthat’s set into the door. If the leaf isn’t flushwith the wood, the trouble may lie there. Thenew wood might have swollen slightly, as well.Because you’re in an older home, the doorprobably opened and shut for years with noproblem, meaning the hinges are (or were) setjust fine. However, the door frames of aginghomes typically settle as time passes, and theframe could be slightly warped. The hingesalso might have worked loose.
The first (and easiest) fix is to check all thehinges — tap them down into place if neces-sary — and tighten the screws holding thehinges to the door. If a screw won’t tightendown, remove it, insert a wooden toothpick (orseveral) into the hole, and reinsert the screw. If the door still sags, try putting a shimbetween the bottom hinge and the door.Remove the door completely from its hinges
This is a hammer
(BPT) — Retire thatold rule that says allthe materials you usefor your deck mustmatch.
Your railing nolonger needs to bemade from the samematerial as yourdecking.
Pairing woodendeck planks stainedin a natural hue witha metallic railing anddecorative balusterscreates a fresh, excit-ing look.
Dress up basicwood and vinyl deckposts with fiber-rein-forced concrete post-covers that resemblestone. There’s also norule that says all yourbalusters have to
match. Try mixingbalusters: alternatedifferent styles ofglass or metal, or mixregular metal or glassbalusters with lightedbalusters. Need helpvisualizing how yourdeck might look alldolled up using them i x - a n d - m a t c htrend? Deckoratorsoffers a simple onlinetool, the Deck Visual-izer, which allows youto mix different deck-ing, balusters andpost caps and see inadvance how yourpersonalized outdoorspace might look. Logon to www.deckora-tors.com to learnmore.
Mix and match trend revolutionizing
deck design
(this is where that second person comes inhandy). Then, unscrew the bottom hinge leaffrom the door. Using the leaf (the flat part) asa template, cut a piece of noncompressiblecardboard, particle board or sheet brass (avail-able in various precut sizes at the hardwarestore) to match. Punch out screw holes in thesame area as on the leaf. Lay the shim againstthe door first, then fasten the hinge leaf to it.Rehang the door and check the fit.
Conversely, if the door latch were higherthan it should be, you would place a shim inthe top hinge. Now, what if the latch lines upbut the door still scrapes or sticks? Try cover-ing the sticking edge with chalk, and open andclose the door. Mark spots on the door edgewhere the chalk has rubbed away. Lightlysticking doors can be repaired by sanding thecontact points. Don’t sand too much, or thedoor won’t fit tightly.

It depends on thelender, but seven-,eight-, and even ten-year car loans arenot unheard of. Gen-erally, the longer theterm of the loan, thelower the monthlypayment but thehigher the totalamount of interestpaid.
Here is an exam-
ple. The average costof a new car in 2013is about $31,000.Suppose someonehas $11,000 fromsavings and/or atrade-in car and bor-rows $20,000 to buya car. Assuming an 8percent interest rate,a three-year $20,000loan would cost $627per month for 36
months with interestcharges of $2,562. Afive-year loan wouldcost $406 a monthfor 60 months with atotal interest cost of$4,332.
In addition to high-er financing costs, longer car loans alsomake car owners“upside down” forlonger periods of
time. This meansthat their car isworth less than theyowe due to rapiddepreciation of valueand slow pay-off ofthe amount bor-rowed (principal).

by Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor, University ofVermont
Impatiens, busy lizzy, or touch-me-not are allnames you may see for this common and popular an-nual flower. It comes in many flower colors, with selec-tions for either sun or shade. A new disease, however,is limiting the use and sale of the shade impatiens soyou may need to seek alternative flowers if your gar-den gets little sun.
The shade impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) is justone of 500 species in the Balsam family or Balsami-naceae, which includes the old-fashioned garden bal-sam (I. balsamina) and the newer hybrid New Guineaimpatiens (I. hawkeri). The latter was introduced froma plant exploration on this South Pacific island in1970. There are several other impatiens you may see, such as the 3 to 4-foot tall jewelweed (I. capensis),whose orange flowers the hummingbirds love but gar-deners may hate as it self-sows readily.
The name comes from the fact they are “impatient”to eject their seeds, as the slightest touch will causeripe seedpods to open and scatter seeds to the wind.Originally thought to be indigenous to Zanzibar (anAfrican island now part of Tanzania), the shade impa-tiens also was found to grow in the eastern regions ofequatorial Africa. It was introduced to the westernworld in 1896 by Dr. John Kirk, a renowned Britishphysician and naturalist who accompanied Dr. Living-stone on many of his African expeditions.
As might be assumed, the shade impatiens shouldreceive part shade (less than 6 hours direct sun perday), and will tolerate filtered sun to full shade. Al-though today’s impatiens varieties are more sun-toler-ant than older varieties, too much sun will cause im-patiens to have small leaves, few blooms, and littleheight. You may see these called “bedding” impatiensas they are commonly massed in garden beds.
Shade impatiens can be planted under trees al-though special care is needed, as the tree roots willcompete with the flowers for space, water, and nutri-ents. Impatiens will require frequent watering and ad-ditional fertilizer, as will mature plants in containers. One easy solution under trees is to construct a slight-ly raised garden six to eight feet from the tree. Or youcan dig out roots, if they are some distance from thetree, and fill the holes with a soil mix for planting.
Other impatiens, such as the popular New Guineacultivars (cultivated varieties), grow in full sun in thenorth, but tolerate part shade and in the south needpart shade. Make sure they are kept well-watered if insun, but are in well-drained soil as all impatiens like.If they do wilt, unless severely, they should revive soonwith watering.
Plants of shade impatiens generally grow from six toeighteen inches tall, depending on series, and one totwo feet wide. Size will vary, depending on the spacing, moisture, available nutrients, and amount of sunlight.Flower form can be single, semidouble, or fully doubleblooms.
New Guinea impatiens are generally upright withless spread. Flowers are single but up to two timeslarger than those of shade impatiens, and often inmore brilliant and bright colors. Their foliage is muchlarger, stiffer, elliptical, and often in dark green to pur-plish colors. They are generally propagated by cut-tings, while shade impatiens are generally from seeds.New Guinea impatiens, too, can be massed in bedsbut also are effective in fronts of beds, along walks, and in containers.’
Impatiens are often found in a named “series”, hav-ing up to two dozen or more flower color choices ineach. Examples of shorter series of the shade impa-tiens with single flowers include Accent, Carnival,Dazzler, Infinity, Super Elfin, and Swirl. Series on the
taller side with single flowers include Blitz, ShadyLady, and Tempo. Taller series with double flowers in-clude Cameo, Carousel, Confection, and Fiesta.
Some popular series of New Guinea impatiens, again in many colors but not so many choices as withshade impatiens, include Celebrate, Gem, Harmony,Java, Lasting Impressions, Ovation, Paradise, Petti-coat, Pizzazz, Pretty Girl, Pure Beauty, and Riviera. There are several named cultivars not in series, suchas the orange-flowered Tango — an All-America Selec-tions winner in 1989, and one of the first to be grownfrom seeds.
If starting impatiens from seed, sow indoors 8 to 10weeks prior to planting outdoors after the last frost.“Harden off” seedlings before transplanting outdoors, putting them out in part shade and bringing them inon frosty nights. If buying plants in spring, chooseones that aren’t wilted or showing signs of stress, withgood leaf color, and well-branched.
When planting, remember that the more tightly theyare spaced, the taller they will grow. They’ll fill insooner if closely spaced, but you’ll need more plants. For example, if plants are used for a border, spacethem eight to 12 inches apart so they will spread butremain low growing. Mix in compost before trans-planting, especially if a sandy or clay soil.
If you want to grow impatiens in window boxes orother containers, use a sterile or soil-less growing mix-ture rather than garden soil to allow for betterdrainage. Space according to the height you wish theplants to attain. Remember, container plants will needmore frequent watering than plants grown in gardens.
Water thoroughly after planting, and continue towater throughout the growing season if it doesn’t rain.Keep soil moist, but avoid overwatering as this could

encourage fungal dis-eases. Avoid overheadwatering late in the dayas the foliage will nothave sufficient time todry before nightfall andwill be more prone to dis-ease. Fertilize impatiensfrequently, according tolabel directions on yourproduct of choice.
A couple of less seriousimpatiens problems formost include a virus anda fungus. Impatiensnecrotic spot virus is car-ried between plants bythe tiny thrips insect, andmay cause stunting, ringspots on leaves, orbrown to purple spots onleaves and stems. Unlesssevere, plants usuallylive. If plants are too wetor with insufficient spaceand air movement, theymay get rhizoctoniacrown rot. This fungusmay cause yellowing, wilting, and plant col-lapse. Prevent it withproper culture, and neemoil sprays if the disease issuspected.
The worst disease anda new one, with no goodcontrols nor fungicidesfor home gardeners, isfortunately a problemjust on the shade impa-tiens. Impatiens downymildew has spread widelyin the plant industry, andis the reason many grow-ers have stopped sellingthese impatiens. Uniqueto this plant species, it isdifferent from downymildews of other plants.Symptoms begin withleaves slightly curlingdownward, yellowing, then growth becomingstunted. A white downycoating can be seen onundersides of leaves.Plants can soon drop allleaves and flowers andcollapse.
To avoid impatiensdowny mildew, inspectplants before purchase.Don’t plant where youhad impatiens die fromthis previously. Use goodculture and plant spac-ing. If impatiens are in-fected, remove plants asthe disease can live onthe dead debris. Throwinfected plants in thetrash, not the compost. You can start plants fromseeds, as these don’t car-ry the disease. The Sun-Patiens brand has shownhigh resistance to thisdisease. Or, alternativeplants you may considerare caladium, coleus, be-gonias (there is a hugerange of these to choosefrom), browallia, torenia,polka-dot plant, and NewGuinea impatiens.

April is National CarCare Month and the CarCare Council remindsmotorists to spring intoaction and follow 10 ba-sic maintenance proce-dures to make sure theirvehicles are running atpeak performance for thesummer driving season.
• Check all fluids, in-cluding engine oil, powersteering, brake andtransmission as well aswindshield washer sol-vent andantifreeze/coolant.
• Check the hoses andbelts to make sure theyare not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showingsigns of excessive wear.
• Check the batteryand replace if necessary.Make sure the connec-tion is clean, tight andcorrosion-free.
• Check the brake sys-tem annually and havethe brake linings, rotorsand drums inspected ateach oil change.
• Inspect the exhaustsystem for leaks, damageand broken supports orhangers if there is anunusual noise. Exhaustleaks can be dangerousand must be correctedwithout delay.
• Schedule a tune-upto help the engine deliverthe best balance of pow-
er and fuel economy andproduce the lowest levelof emissions.
• Check the heating, ventilating and air condi-tioning (HVAC) system,as proper heating andcooling performance iscritical for interior com-fort and for safety rea-sons such as defrosting.
• Inspect the steeringand suspension systemannually includingshock absorbers, strutsand chassis parts suchas ball joints, tie rodends and other relatedcomponents.
• Check the tires, in-cluding tire pressure andtread. Uneven wear indi-cates a need for wheelalignment. Tires shouldalso be checked forbulges and bald spots.
• Check the wipers andlighting so that you cansee and be seen. Checkthat all interior and exte-rior lighting is workingproperly and replaceworn wiper blades soyou can see clearly whendriving during precipita-tion.
“Whether you visit aprofessional servicetechnician or do it your-self, a thorough vehicleinspection this springcan help keep your carsafe and dependable and
help you avoid muchhigher costs down theroad in the form of moreextensive repairs or lostresale value,” said RichWhite, executive direc-tor, Car Care Council.
Many of the business-es and groups planninginspection events for Na-tional Car Care Month inApril have posted themon the event finder onthe Car Care Council’swebsite. For more infor-
mation on finding orhosting a local event, vis-it www.carcare.org/car-care-events/.
The Car Care Councilis the source of informa-tion for the “Be Car CareAware” consumer educa-tion campaign promotingthe benefits of regularvehicle care, mainte-nance and repair to con-sumers.
