Hello Again,

Hunting through the books in our library, I found a real treasure. I remember buying it

at a book sale on the front porch of the Village Library in Cooperstown. It must have

been donated as part of the annual library fundraiser. It did not appear to have been

part of the library collection. How it arrived there could be a story in itself.

Now, 86 years after its publication date of 1926, we can peruse its pages, chat about

its content, and glean a little about its original owners, not necessarily who they were

but rather what made them tick.

My mother often said, “Show me your friends, and I will tell you who you are.”

The title of the songbook is “The Patron” published by Authority of the National

Grange in April 1926 with a copyright date of 1925. On its first page, it is embossed

with “Sprout Brook Grange P of H. Sprout Brook, N.Y. No 1121, organized January 2,

1905.”

By reading “The Patron,” it seems as though we are enjoying a peek into the very heart

and soul of those turn of the century grange families.

Following my mother’s thoughts, we can say, “Listen” to what those grange members

were singing about and it will show us who they really were.

We can’t sit around a chunk stove and chat with those early grangers, but we can

sort of join them by thumbing through the pages and create our own picture. The

written words will speak to us.

The first several pages were patriotic songs, starting with “The Star Spangled

Banner.” “Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,” and ends with “Old Glory.” “Old

Glory waves for me, I’ll shout and sing its praises over land and sea.”

Followed by several grange degree songs such as the “Patrons Chain.” “Come patrons,

let us join our hands around our sacred shrine, we pledge to each fraternal love as

sacred and divine.” The last 50 pages were sacred songs which included one of my

favorites, “The Church in the Wildwood.” “There’s a church in the

valley by the wildwood. No lovelier place in the dale.”

Reading through this little songbook painted a picture of why

America has proven to hold a nearly sacred spot of its own in this

world.

Those grangers, mostly farmers, were real Americans. Loyal to our

Constitution, to our flag, to each other. They joined hands in


family, friends, country and God. They were willing to stand and sing their belief. No

wonder our country became so strong. They were our early neighbors, our forefathers.

They lived near Sprout Brook.

This morning my wife and I were having breakfast at Becky’s Café on Garden Road in

West Palm Beach. Two truck drivers from Ames, Iowa were sitting at the table next to

us. We spent a good half hour chatting. It was the morning after the Iowa caucus and

naturally the conversation dwelt on the players in that high-priced race.

At the chance of offending some of our readers, I still feel it is important to explain

what they said. Remember these two men live in Ames, Iowa so naturally their thoughts

were Iowan, not New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio—but Iowan.

I asked, “What did you think of the outcome of the Iowa caucus?” One man seemed to

be more willing to share his thoughts. The other appeared to agree with what he was

saying. He said, to paraphrase, “We couldn’t be there to voice our opinions but I was

pleased that Santorum lost by only 8 votes. I think he would make a great president.

Furthermore, I don’t care who wins as long as he can beat Obama at election time.” He

went on to say, “He—Obama—is not qualified to be President.” He continued, “I think

he is full of horse apples.” In our valley we call “horse apples” road muffins, but his words

were understood.

Rather than offend, I will not voice any opinion other than to say these blue-collared

American men voiced their opinions and their homes are in Ames, Iowa.

Now for our weekly dose of blarney.

My wife was shopping at the local grocery store. She said to Carm the grocer, “Give

me a pound of those grapes—my husband likes them. Do you know if they’ve been

sprayed with any kind of poison?” “No Sylvia,” he said. “You’ll have to get that at the

hardware store.”

Florida is famous for its alligators. My wife asked an old-time Floridian, “Is it true

that an alligator won’t hurt you if you carry a torch?” The old man answered, “Well, I

guess that depends on how fast you carry it.”

Love is a short word with a long meaning—a stranger is a friend

you haven’t met yet. To have a friend you must be friendly. The Bible

says—If you knock on the door, Christ will answer it. Talk to him. He

will listen.

Six years ago, myfather died of a stroke.My mother tried torouse him from bed,but he responded withconfusion and wasunable to speak. Shecalled for an ambu-lance. He was in thehospital only fourhours before he died.The doctor said hewould have lived if hehad gotten treatmentsooner. My motherhas felt guilty aboutthis ever since.

She lives with usnow. I don’t want tomiss a stroke if shehas one. How do yourecognize one, andwhat should be doneright away in an emer-gency? — T.B.

Answer: Nearly900,000 strokes occuryearly in the UnitedStates, and of thosevictims, 200,000 die.Many of the survivorsare left with great dis-abilities. Strokes comein two types: One is anischemic (is-KEY-mick) stroke, and theother is a hemorrhagicstroke. “Ischemic”means “deprived ofblood.” It’s the morecommon kind ofstroke, accounting for80 percent of allstrokes. The flow ofblood to part of thebrain is blocked by aclot in an artery. It’sthe brain’s equivalentof a heart attack. Theother 20 percentcomes from bleedingin the brain, a hemor-rhagic stroke.

Signs of either kindof stroke includeslurred speech, sud-

den confusion, numb-ness of the face, armor leg, trouble seeing,dizziness and severeheadache. Many advo-cate testing the personto decide if a strokehas occurred. Askingthe affected person tostick out his or hertongue and seeing if itdeviates to the side isone of those tests.Don’t waste timedoing tests. Immedi-ately call 911.

Dear Dr. Donohue:My husband is verynearsighted and hasto wear thick glasses.I’m not. I don’t wearglasses at age 50. Wehave four children.What are theirchances of having towear glasses? — E.P.

Answer: Nearsight-edness (myopia) indi-cates that the eyescan see things thatare near. Nearsightedeyes don’t see distantobjects clearly. It’s acommon eye condi-tion, and geneticinvolvement in it ishigh.

If one parent isnearsighted, the chil-dren have a 24 per-cent chance of alsobeing nearsighted. Ifboth parents are near-sighted, the children’srisk increases to 48percent.

If neither parent isaffected, the childrenhave an 8 percentchance of developingnearsightedness. Fac-tors other than geneshave to be at work.(Don’t believe thesepercentages withunquestioning accept-ance. I don’t.)

ble failure turned into a spec-tacular event with the help of asmall, but dedicated anddetermined group ofCanajoharie folks. The 2011Last Night in Canajoharie, withthe theme of “Looking up!” wastermed a huge success.

“I think it was really great-especially since we started inNovember!” said Dick Rose,who along with Mayor FrancisAvery, Phyllis Lapi, andMelanie Shibley was the back-bone of the event. “I was veryencouraged by the turnout!”Rose said.

Heather Rockwell, advisor tothe 2015 Freshman class atCanajoharie reported nearlyrunning out of ingredients forthe chicken and biscuit din-ners, which 12 students and 3adults cooked and served atthe Canajoharie Firehouse.“Thankfully I had Kathy Kaneand Tiffeny Brown Ayers tohelp!” Rockwell said gratefully.She credited the freshmen fortheir work. “These are good,responsible, enthusiastic kids,who really participate!”

Rockwell said of the studentswho assisted with the dinner.

Lapi Co-chaired the eventwith Shibley. “Overall it was avery positive experience,” Lapisaid. “We had a really enthusi-astic crowd at the puppet showand the children were delight-

ed. Children had a chance tovisit with Santa and thankhim for his gifts.”

Lapi and Shibley were sta-tioned at the Arkell Library &Museum, where in addition tothe Sleepy Santa and thePuppet People, children’s

games were enjoyed by all-even some adults took part.The popular duet, theDependents, performed at thelibrary and drew a very largecrowd. “There was a largecross-section of the communi-ty in attendance,” Lapi stated.“I was so pleased by theturnout of parents, childrenand grandparents- whole fami-lies.”

Lapi also reported speakingto many people from out oftown who attended the event,including people from Fort Annand Scotia. Mayor Averyreported groups of people fromBroadalbin, Schenectady andGallupville who attended thedance at the firehouse where aperformance by Linda Lee andthe Fox Creek Band was wellattended.

Fritz Ann Farm CarriageRides reported “full wagonrides every time” they arrivedback at the Arkell Museum &Library parking lot where theywere stationed.

“I was really surprised!” saidFritz Ann Surace. “Wholegroups of people were gettingoff and on at the CornellCooperative Extension build-ing. And we were picking peo-ple up and dropping them offat Mercato’s Restaurant aswell.”

“We were totally packed atMercato’s!” said MicheleMcGlone. We tried to prepareas best we could by takingreservations and hiring a dish-washer and creating a speciallimited menu. Even with allthat, we were hard pressed tokeep it from spiraling out ofcontrol. Of course our cus-

tomers were wonderful andpatient and we just did ourbest. I think the absolutelyfantastic music helped enter-tain while people were waitingfor service.” Mercato’s hostedIra Meltzer & Company. “Wedid have to turn about 6-10people away during the firstseating,” McGlone reported.“They didn’t have reservationsand we were completely full.”

McGlone said “it was the bestnight she’s (Mercato’s) everhad since she opened! Ilearned alot and have ideas onhow to make then next ‘big’night even better!”

The acoustic duo BentwoodRockers, Bill Ackerbauer andRoland Vinyard, performed forthe evening at the LibertyDaycare Center on ChurchStreet.

“We had a great crowd formost of the performance,” saidAckerbauer. “I would guess wehad about 30 people there forthe last hour of the show.”

According to Shibley thesuccess of the event was due tothe cooperation of the commu-nity and “our small, dedicated,diligent, faithful, MondayMorning Committee. We allhad our assigned tasks and weall kept in communication.”

“We also had great press,”said Lapi. “They got the wordout!” Lapi also noted that theevent was done with all dona-tions, no grants or publicfunding. “It goes to show thatthe community can pulltogether on short notice andhave a real celebration- peoplewill come and attend!”

A new year is a greattime to resolve to be asmarter, safer consumer.The Better Business Bu-reau (BBB) has 10 reso-lutions that can helpconsumers fight scam-mers, prevent identitytheft and save money in2012.

“Consumers can savetime, trouble and theirmoney if they create abudget, research busi-nesses before they buyand learn to recognizecommon red flags of fre-quent scams,” saidDavid Polino, BBB Presi-dent. The following reso-lutions can help con-

sumers have a scam-free2012:

1. Always check abusiness out with theBBB before you buy.Nearly 400,000 busi-nesses meet BBB stan-dards and are qualifiedto use an AccreditedBusiness seal on theirwebsites and at businesslocations. Visitwww.bbb.org to findBBB Business Reviewsfor nearly 4 million busi-nesses across NorthAmerica.

2. Be skeptical of “joboffers” that promise easymoney. With high unem-ployment and long job

searches common,scammers are targetingpeople desperate to findjobs. Beware of any joboffer, work-at-homescheme or business op-portunity that promisesbig money for little workand no experience.

3. Always read the fineprint — especially with“free” trial offers. Thou-sands of consumerscomplained to the BBBthis year after signing upfor a “free” trial offer on-line that resulted in re-peated charges to theircredit or debit cards,sometimes adding up tohundreds of dollars

every month. Read theterms and conditions ofany “free” trial offer be-fore handing over creditor debit card numbers.

4. Keep your computersafe. If you haven’t al-ready done so, installanti-virus software onyour computer andcheck regularly for soft-ware and operating sys-tem updates and patch-es. Don’t open attach-ments or click on links inemails unless you canconfirm the email camefrom someone you trust.

5. Never wire money tosomeone you don’tknow. Many scams re-quire that the victim wiremoney back to the scam-mers. Scammers knowthat tracking money sentvia MoneyGram or West-ern Union is extremelydifficult. Once you’vewired the money, it’snearly impossible to getit back.

6. Fight identity theft.Shred paper documentsthat include sensitive fi-nancial data and disposeof computers, cell

phones and digital datasafely. The BBB offerstips and checklists onwhat to shred, and hostsannual Secure Your IDevents nationwide tohelp you stay safe.

7. Ask the BBB forhelp. File a complaintwith your BBB if youhave a disagreementwith a business or havebeen ripped off by ascammer.

8. Create a budget andstick to it. Setting abudget can help you stayafloat in 2012. The BBBhas advice on how tocreate a budget to helpyou get out of debt andstay out of debt atwww.bbb.org.

9. Fight fake checkfraud. Thanks to ad-vances in printing tech-nology, scammers havethe ability to create pro-fessional-looking phonychecks. Educate yourselfon the common types ofcheck fraud and be ex-tremely wary of checksthat come with claimsthat you’ve won the lot-tery, are eligible for agovernment grant orhave landed a job as asecret shopper. Theseare almost alwaysscams.

10. Get everything inwriting. Don’t just take acompany’s word for it.Get every verbal agree-ment in writing to limitmisunderstandings be-tween what you expectand what the businessdelivers.
