Happy Father’s Day!

Dads are filled with advice – some of it good, some of it, well, a little off the wall, but all ofit memorable. What words of wisdom can youtake from these quotable quotes?

“I had to walk to school barefoot, in thesnow, uphills both ways”.

“That will go on your permanent record”

“There’s nothing a little duct tape can’t fix.”

“As long as you live under my roof, you’llfollow my rules.”

“That dog isn’t going to walk itself.”

“A word to the wise should suffice.”

“You’re going out looking like that?”

“Keep your nose out of trouble.”

“It’s never too late to live happily everafter.”

Hello Again,

In an early edition of “Hello Again,” the subject of whether this publication should comment

on politics or religion was covered.

The statement was published for all to read that “Hello Again” would defend the Christian

belief and the American way of life and I would not be ashamed to do so.

With that, realizing I may offend some, hoping for understanding and not to offend, I offer

the following:

We—the citizens and guests of this great country—have been continually blessed with a

republican form of government and capitalistic enterprise, anchored by religious freedom, and

by a living belief in God.

By that I mean, we choose or vote for individuals to represent us in governing our villages,

towns, counties, states and nation. This is known as a republic, or a representative form of

government as opposed to a king, dictator, or any self-perpetuating form of government.

Why am I writing about this today? Simply stated, we have those in positions of authority

in government and professors in our colleges who are strongly advocating change. From the

time of the Pilgrims and carried forward, our forefathers desired, understood, and

demanded that we—under God—must and would have a representative form of government,

absolutely not as socialist, not a king or dictator or uncontrollable body but instead a

government of “We the People” under God with the government under us, by us, and for us.

Not that we are here to support the government while those in authority rule us.

It has been written, first freedom, then change to socialism and then to communism.

Our president certainly appears to be in favor of a socialist form of life for this country.

With nearly every statement, he appears to be advocating big government—that is

government which should and would be in charge of education, health, welfare, law

enforcement and business. What’s next? Religion? During the past few months Washington,

D.C., under Mr. Obama’s leadership, has tried to take over control of finance, the auto

industry, national health and education. State and even city

governments are handing down more regulations. New York City’s

government now wants to dictate the size of sweetened soft drinks.

Does that seem silly?—It’s not. Do you want your government to

actually dictate to you what you can eat or drink?

I trust you are starting to understand and hope you agree.

First let’s try to gain a layman’s handle on socialism.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary socialism is: Any

of various theories or systems of social organization in which the

Page 7: Valley Pennysaver 6.16.12

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • June 16, 2012 Page 7

means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized govern-

ment.

Now let’s boil that down to its simplest meaning for you and me.

If you are an employee, your actual boss would be the government. If you think you own a

business, the government will actually be “the manager.” A few years ago I read an article

about a young man in Russia who had to apply to the government to receive permission to

change his job or position in the same state-controlled factory. Four years later the

government sent him a form asking him to explain why he wanted to change.

So, you ask, “What’s so important now about this chatter concerning socialism or free

enterprise?”

My answer is: Listen to television news, read newspapers and magazines.

If they are expounding more government offerings or control, they are pushing for

socialism. First bigger government, which becomes socialism and the next change—

communism.

I suggest we all really think this through, register and be ready to vote this coming

November.

Question for each of us to answer: Do we want to have the government run our lives or do

we want to stick with the old-fashioned American way of life? We, the voting American

citizens, will run our businesses and government. Believe it or not, in November the decision

will be in our hands.

Socialism does not work because it provides no real incentive to work hard or produce.

People stop, or never start, exerting themselves and become dependent on the state.

Two village boys were chatting at the hot dog stand. The youngest one said, “I had a long

talk about girls with my father. He doesn’t know much about them either.”

The socialist said, “Hard work won’t kill a fellow if he can stay far enough away from it.”

As a new hired hand was being introduced to the other farm workers, he asked “Is the boss

as mean as they say?” “Yeah, he is, but he’s fair. He’s mean to everybody.”

I was riding my three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle along the New Turnpike Road and asked

a farm lady selling homemade bread if she had any strawberries. She said, “No, but our

neighbors up Baum Road have some.”

What a wonderful way of life we share in this area. Real homemade bread, garden fresh

strawberries, and neighbors helping each other.

If the Good Lord gave me a choice of living anywhere in his world, my answer would be “Thank

you Lord, I am now where I want to be. Right here in our valley.”

Revolutionary 2 Part FormulaBring space-age technology to your driveway and save water at the

same time. Snap Seal is easy to use.

1. Washing your car is optional, though not needed. (A light rinsing maybe necessary to remove larger dirt particles.)

2. Apply Snap Seal Waterless Wash & Wax to the vehicle. Apply it rightover any dirt, grime or bug marks.

3. Evenly spread it around with a clean cloth.

4. Wipe it off with another dry, soft cotton cloth. It’s that simple.

How it Works...Our super-secret formula does not scratch the vehicles delicate surface

because each application completely encapsulates dirt particles with aprotective coating of wax. When you wipe the wax with a polishing cloth,a hard waxed surface remains, and it lasts and lasts.

Apply it any time in any way. Back and forth, up and down, circles, side-ways - it doesn’t matter. Use Snap Seal Liquid Wax in the sun or shade.

In the long evolution ofsleeping comfort, from leavesgathered into a pile to today’smemory foam and SleepNumber beds, one type of bedwas the standard for about300 years. The simple ropebed reigned in bedrooms fromthe 16th Century until thelate 1800s.

A rope bed is made by lac-ing ropes or strips of leatheracross a bed frame to supportthe mattress. Prior to that, beds were shallow chests intowhich the bedding wasplaced. Resting a mattress ona lattice work of rope was thefirst attempt to soften a bed’sfoundation.

A major drawback of thistype of bed was that the ropesstretched out and needed tobe frequently tighten toensure firm support and abetter night’s sleep. To

accomplish these adjust-ments, a key like this one, from the antiques collection ofWillis “Skip” Barshied, wasused. Tightening the ropes toincrease comfort gave rise to

an expression that’s still inuse today; “sleep tight.”

In 1865, the first coil springmattress was patented and asthey became more popular, rope beds fell out of favor.

by Martha FilipicI’ve been told that I’m

“pre-diabetic.” Should I cutway back on fruit? I knowit contains a lot of sugar.

First, for individualhealth-related advice, it’salways best to talk direct-ly to your doctor or, incases like this, a regis-tered dietitian, who couldwork with you personally

to examine your normalday-to-day eating pat-terns and help you makeimprovements.

But if you’re like mostAmericans, you likelyaren’t eating enough fruit. And your question indi-cates that you have thecommon misconceptionthat eating sweets causesdiabetes. It doesn’t. It’s

caused by the body’s in-ability to handle bloodsugar, but that comesfrom many kinds of foods, not just those that tastesweet.

In fact, a recent studypublished in the journalDiabetes Care indicatesthat people who eat a lotof fruits and vegetables —and, even more impor-

tantly, a lot of differentkinds of fruits and vegeta-bles — may have a lowerrisk of developing type 2diabetes.

The study includedmore than 3,700 adults inthe United Kingdom andlasted 11 years. The re-searchers found:

• Eating more fruits andvegetables (about sixservings a day) was asso-ciated with a 21 percentlower risk of developingtype 2 diabetes comparedwith eating just two serv-ings a day.

• People who ate a widevariety of fruits and veg-etables — averaging 16different types over thecourse of a week — wereabout 40 percent lesslikely to develop diabetesthan those who averagedjust eight different types.

It’s important to notethat the study doesn’tnecessarily prove causeand effect. But it is onemore good reason whyyou might want to incor-porate a wider variety offruits and vegetables intoyour diet. Here are someideas to do so:

• Even if you don’t nor-mally pack your lunch, pack a snack to have mid-

morning or mid-after-noon. It can be one of thestandards: an apple, or-ange, banana, grapes, baby carrots, celery stripsor red pepper strips, orsomething totally new.Shop the produce sectionwith a fresh eye to see

what you might want totry.

• Buy large containersof vanilla or plain yogurtand, as you prepare indi-vidual servings, top withone-quarter to one-halfcup of fresh or frozenberries.

• Add variety to saladsby including spinach with

the lettuce and toppingwith fresh blueberries orstrawberries.

For more on the bene-fits of fruits and vegeta-bles and ideas to includemore in your diet, see theFruits and Veggies Matterwebsite, a partnership of

the Centers for DiseaseControl and Preventionand the Produce for Bet-ter Health Foundation, atwww.fruitsandveggies-matter.gov.

Estate and Funeral Planning GuideEvery family is differ-

ent, and not everyonewants the same type offuneral. Funeral prac-tices are influenced byreligious and culturaltraditions, costs and per-sonal preferences. Thesefactors help determinewhether the funeral willbe elaborate or simple, public or private, reli-gious or secular, andwhere it will be held. They also influencewhether the body will bepresent at the funeral, ifthere will be a viewing orvisitation, and if so,whether the casket willbe open or closed, andwhether the remains willbe buried or cremated.

Among the choicesyou’ll need to make arewhether you want one ofthese basic types of fu-nerals, or something inbetween.

“Traditional,” full-service funeral

This type of funeral, of-ten referred to by funeralproviders as a “tradition-al” funeral, usually in-cludes a viewing or visi-

tation and formal funeralservice, use of a hearseto transport the body tothe funeral site andcemetery, and burial, en-tombment or cremationof the remains.

It is generally the mostexpensive type of funer-al. In addition to the fu-neral home’s basic serv-ices fee, costs often in-clude embalming anddressing the body; rentalof the funeral home forthe viewing or service;and use of vehicles totransport the family ifthey don’t use their own.The costs of a casket, cemetery plot or cryptand other funeral goodsand services also mustbe factored in.

Direct burialThe body is buried

shortly after death, usu-ally in a simple contain-er. No viewing or visita-tion is involved, so noembalming is necessary.A memorial service maybe held at the gravesideor later. Direct burialusually costs less thanthe “traditional,” full-

service funeral. Costs in-clude the funeral home’sbasic services fee, as wellas transportation andcare of the body, the pur-chase of a casket or bur-ial container and a ceme-tery plot or crypt. If thefamily chooses to be atthe cemetery for the bur-ial, the funeral home of-ten charges an addition-al fee for a gravesideservice.

Direct cremationThe body is cremated

shortly after death, with-out embalming. The cre-mated remains areplaced in an urn or othercontainer. No viewing orvisitation is involved, al-though a memorial serv-ice may be held, with orwithout the cremated re-mains present. The re-mains can be kept in thehome, buried or placed

in a crypt or niche in acemetery, or buried orscattered in a favoritespot. Direct cremationusually costs less thanthe “traditional,” full-service funeral. Costs in-clude the funeral home’sbasic services fee, as wellas transportation andcare of the body. A cre-matory fee may be in-cluded or, if the funeralhome does not own the

crematory, the fee maybe added on. There alsowill be a charge for anurn or other container. The cost of a cemeteryplot or crypt is includedonly if the remains areburied or entombed.

Funeral providers whooffer direct cremationsalso must offer to pro-vide an alternative con-tainer that can be usedin place of a casket.

What kind of funeral do you want?

All veterans are entitled to a free burial in a nationalcemetery and a grave marker. This eligibility also ex-tends to some civilians who have provided military-re-lated service and some Public Health Service personnel.Spouses and dependent children also are entitled to alot and marker when buried in a national cemetery. There are no charges for opening or closing the grave, for a vault or liner, or for setting the marker in a nation-al cemetery. The family generally is responsible for oth-er expenses, including transportation to the cemetery. For more information, visit the Department of VeteransAffairs’ website at www.cem.va.gov. To reach the re-gional Veterans office in your area, call 1-800-827-1000.

In addition, many states have established state veter-ans cemeteries. Eligibility requirements and other de-tails vary. Contact your state for more information.

Beware of commercial cemeteries that advertise so-called “veterans’ specials.” These cemeteries sometimes

offer a free plot for the veteran, but charge exorbitantrates for an adjoining plot for the spouse, as well ashigh fees for opening and closing each grave. Evaluatethe bottom-line cost to be sure the special is as specialas you may be led to believe.

Funeral costs include:1. Basic services fee for

the funeral director andstaff

The Funeral Rule al-lows funeral providers tocharge a basic servicesfee that customers can-not decline to pay. Thebasic services fee in-cludes services that arecommon to all funerals, regardless of the specific

arrangement. These in-clude funeral planning, securing the necessarypermits and copies ofdeath certificates, prepar-ing the notices, shelteringthe remains, and coordi-nating the arrangementswith the cemetery, cre-matory or other third par-ties. The fee does not in-clude charges for optionalservices or merchandise.

2. Charges for otherservices and merchandise

These are costs for op-tional goods and servicessuch as transporting theremains; embalming andother preparation; use ofthe funeral home for theviewing, ceremony or me-morial service; use ofequipment and staff for agraveside service; use of ahearse or limousine; a

casket, outer burial con-tainer or alternate con-tainer; and cremation orinterment.

3. Cash advancesThese are fees charged

by the funeral home forgoods and services itbuys from outside ven-dors on your behalf, in-cluding flowers, obituarynotices, pallbearers, offi-ciating clergy, and organ-

ists and soloists. Somefuneral providers chargeyou their cost for theitems they buy on yourbehalf. Others add a serv-ice fee to their cost. TheFuneral Rule requiresthose who charge an ex-

tra fee to disclose thatfact in writing, althoughit doesn’t require them tospecify the amount oftheir markup. The Rulealso requires funeralproviders to tell you ifthere are refunds, dis-counts or rebates fromthe supplier on any cashadvance item.Calculating the Actual

CostThe funeral provider

must give you an item-ized statement of the totalcost of the funeral goods

and services you have se-lected when you are mak-ing the arrangements. Ifthe funeral provider does-n’t know the cost of thecash advance items at thetime, he or she is re-quired to give you a writ-

ten “good faith estimate.”This statement also mustdisclose any legal, ceme-tery or crematory require-ments that you purchaseany specific funeral goodsor services.

The Funeral Rule doesnot require any specificformat for this informa-tion. Funeral providersmay include it in any doc-ument they give you atthe end of your discus-sion about funeralarrangements.
