Spring 2010

Air barrier paper is a covering over a building interior during construction that keeps air from flowing into many parts of the building. Keeps overwhelming moisture and the elements from entering the building not during construction only, but during the life time of the building as well.

Soffit vent- a vent under the roof that allows air to flow into the attic and upper space in a building

Ridge vent- a vent on the roof that allowed moist and humid air to flow out of the attic or upper level area

Building used for ventilation

Gabel vent- a covered vent that allows warm dry air to escape the attic or upper area of a building

Roof turbine- pulls air out of the attic or upper area that the vents cant handle or get to

A backhoe is piece of machinery in the field that is used to dig up trenches and holes with its bucket. Can be attacked to a front end loader, but can be separate as well. Bucket in picture is 2’ wide.

Batter Boards were pieces of wood that were used to mark the outer areas of the building so the trenches and areas could be dug within the limits of the building.

Roman Brick Arch

Segmental Brick arch

Brick arch with keystone

Centering an arch

Common pattern- basic striation of brick pattern. Brick above or below is set ½ off the other.

Monk pattern- every other brick is turned inside

The bulldozer is another piece of machinery in the field. Is used to push large piles of dirt and rubble around, moving stuff around the construction site.

Window in my room is a double window and the opening is 22” x 28” and 6” net opening. Sill is 2’6” off the floor. Codes state that sill must be below 44” and above 24”. The opening must be above 20”x24”. My window meets IBC requirements.

These are rubber covered stairs in the dorm. Rise measures at 7” and tread measures at 10 1/8”. Code states that the rise must be between 7 ¾” and 7 3/8”, and tread must be between 10 3/8” and 10”. The stairs meet these requirements.

Control joint is a joint set into concrete to control where cracking happens. However, does not always work, as shown above.

Isolation joint is a joint that separates two things, such as a column and the floor. In this photo, the joint is keeping the concrete and the brick separate.

CMU is a concrete block, usually in dimensions of around 8”x8”x16”. They are used in foundation walls mostly, but many buildings are made solely from them. Not all CMU’s are those dimensions, but some are even 6”x6”x16”, much like the ones on the right.

Exterior Flush Door

Sidelight-A strip of vertical glass running alongside a door.

Top rail Stile Bottom rail Panel

Transom- a window above a door that is usually hinged to a horizontal crosspiece over the door

Power pole with transformer. It is an electrical device by which alternating current of one voltage is changed to another voltage.

Service meter. A device that measures the amount of electricity consumed daily.

Service panel. Controls where the electricity goes and if it is on or off

Duplex receptacle. A dual plug in the wall for plugging in electrical devices.

Front end loader is a piece of machinery that is used to move rubble, dirt, and even equipment around a construction sight. Difference between the front end loader and a bulldozer is the front end loader can lift things while a bulldozer can only push.

Known also as dry wall, it is the main wall material used in construction.

One advantage of a heat pump is that they produce low-density heat which is safer for children and elderly, unlike fires, oil filled or electric fan heaters.

One disadvantage of a heat pump is they are expensive and are used a lot in cold weather.

Condenser systems typically has a heat exchanger section to cool down and condense incoming refrigerant vapor into liquid, a compressor to raise the pressure of the refrigerant and move it along, and a fan for blowing outside air through the heat exchanger section to cool the refrigerant inside.

Air handling unit is a device used to condition and circulate air

A lintel is a horizontal beam used in the construction of buildings that usually supports the masonry above a window or door opening

Concave mortar joint, troweled, 1/3”, dormitory, N type mortar

Racked joint, tooled, 1/3”, O type mortar

OSB is a type of wood board that is constructed from the shards of left over boards made at a factory. They are a nonveneered panel product and are commonly used in residential construction.

Lavatory 1 ½” pipeVTR: allows sewer gases to escape the piping

Flush mount sink

Diameter 1”, #6 rebar. Deformations there so soil and concrete can grip it.

A gutter is a device that catches rain fall and funnels it towards the down spouts.

A down spout is a vertical pipe that moves the water from the gutter down to the ground.

Ridge- The peak of your roofline along its top

Valley- The portion of your roof where two slopes intersect

Eave- The overhanging lower edge of your roof

No fascia

Rake- The side of your roof's slope

Soffit- underside of the eave

Fascia-describes any horizontal surface which spans across the top of columns or across the top of a wall

Coursed ashlar Random rubble

Weep hole- small openings left in the outer wall of masonry construction as an outlet for water inside a building to move outside the wall and evaporate.

Double hung window- two windows stacked on top of each other
