Exalted Ruler’s Message Welcome Back! Now that summer is over, regular Lodge hours will resume. On Sunday September 3rd, we will hold a “Welcome Back Sunday” party. The Lodge will open at 1PM and the party will start at 3PM. On Monday September 4th, we will host our Labor Day BBQ, with music by the GroundHogs. There will be Dinner and music on Fridays or Saturdays during the month. Check your Calendars for info. “Texas Hold-Em” will be held on Friday Septem-ber 15th and will be held on the third Friday of each month going forward. Please support all the events you can, they support charities and our Lodge.
Our House Manager, Yolanda, has resigned effective September 30th. I want to thank her for the great job she has done for the past 1 ½ years organizing many events that has taken place in our Lodge during this time. I think everyone has had a good time and the events have benefited our Lodge and charities. While Yolanda is leaving as House Manager, she will continue on as a Bartender and an active member of the Lodge. In July, on your behalf, I attended the Grand Lodge Convention. I witnessed the installation of G.E.R. Malcom J. McPherson Jr. whose program this year is “Strengthening Elkdom Through Community Awareness”. I was proud to see Florida State receive an award for the second highest in-crease in Membership second only to California. The Tallahassee Lodge won the Ritual Contest. I got to vote on your behalf on the 19 propositions put before the member-ship. One change will come during upcoming Initiations. We will no longer perform the shortened version of the Ritual. All Lodges will now be required to go back to perform-ing the original (long) version of the Ritual. As of this writing, I am happy to report that the Lodge has received 4 grants from the Elks National Foundation. The Beacon Grant, which helps fund ‘Cookies for Soldiers’. The Promise Grant, which helps with funding ‘Sun-Up ARC’. The Gratitude Grant, witch funds Dictionaries for Rosewood Magnet School and the Christmas and Easter parties at the Wabasso School for the severely disabled. The Anniversary Grant (new this year), which will be used to fund Dictionaries for the rest of the 3rd grade stu-dents in the Indian River County School District. We have also applied for the Freedom Grant, which helps fund our Veteran Programs, and the Impact Grant, which funds our ‘Elks Love Kids of Character’ program at Vero Beach Elementary school. The Lodge should hear soon on these 2 grants. Finally I want to THANK all the MEMBERS who take time out of their busy schedules to volunteer around the Lodge and at our different events. I am very proud and appreciative of all you do, the Lodge would not be able to function without you. We are still in need of more members that can step up to volunteer, remem-ber that many hands make the work lighter for everyone. So if you like to plan parties, have a favorite meal you like to cook or would just like to meet your fellow members by being a greeter or selling raffle tickets or Bingo cards, we would love to hear from you. If you are unable to volunteer, Remember, just going and enjoying any of our events is fun and contributing to the health of our Lodge. Hope to see you there! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ! From the Secretary’s Desk
I would like to thank all of our members who turned out to welcome the “Brotherhood Ride” on July 27th and
28th. The cooks, servers and greeters did an outstanding job. Vero Beach High School made the showers available
as long as they were needed, thanks to Greg Ahrins for those accommodations. And thank you to Vero Beach Mayor
Laura Moss for welcoming the riders on Thursday night and coming back on Friday morning for their sendoff. Thank
you to our Southeast Central District Vice President Marge Spera and PER Sal Lentine for representing the Florida
State Elks Association. Many of our members made contributions to the Brotherhood Ride as well as purchasing T-
shirts and hats. The riders expressed their gratitude with a plaque and poster signed by all of the riders.
Vero Beach Lodge should be proud of the way we welcomed these First Responders to our facility. They ride
for the men and women who lost their lives protecting ours. The money they raise goes to the families of those who
have made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless Them All and God Bless America.
Jack McClurken, LM, PDDGER, Secretary

Malcolm McPherson was installed as the Elks Grand Exalted Ruler at the Grand Lodge Convention in Reno, NV in July, 2017.
Community awareness is theme for 2017-18
Message from the Grand Exalted Ruler MALCOLM J. McPHERSON JR. As I begin my journey this year, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to you, the Elks community, for trusting in me to serve as your next Grand Exalted Ruler. I could not have achieved this honor without the unwavering support and guidance of many of my fellow Elks, family and friends. My theme for the 2017-18 fraternal year is “Strengthening Elkdom Through Community Awareness.” By definition, community is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.” Elks are community, and it is my hope for the coming year that by working together with the Elks National Foundation and through our more than 775,000 Members and nearly 2,000 Lodges nationwide, we can build both stronger communities and stronger Elks. With the Elks mission of supporting veterans, aiding special and underprivileged children, and promoting the growth of our youth through scholarship, Drug Awareness and sports programs, we will ultimately build a bond with each other while making our local communities a better place to live. For 2017-18, one of my goals is to increase membership. As we begin celebrating our 150th year of Elkdom, l ask that you promote the great work of Elkdom to your communities. To exist for 150 years, the Elks are doing great work. We must continue to inform our communities of our great works to increase membership and continue to strengthen our programs. I challenge you to identify the specific ways in which you can foster the Elks values of charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity in the places you live and work. Pat and l are looking forward to meeting many of you in your Local Lodges and communities throughout our travels this year. Until then, I leave you with the old lrish Blessing: “May the road rise to meet you; may the wind be always at your back; may the sun shine warm upon your face...” And may the hand of an Elk always be near.
A Special Message from Jack McClurken, Secretary
Effective April 1, 2018, I will be stepping down
as Secretary of Vero Beach Elks Lodge #1774. When
I accepted the position in August of 2016, I told then
Exalted Ruler Dennis Ryan that I would accept the
position with the understanding that I would serve for
the remainder or his term and for one more year under
the newly elected Exalted Ruler. I have served
Elkdom for 36 years. No matter where I have moved
to, I have always been an active member. I will how-
ever remain an active member of the Lodge. My
sincerest thank you to all who have welcomed Nancy
and I to the Lodge.
Any member who desires to serve in the
position of Secretary should contact Exalted Ruler Paul
Diaz. There is considerable training to be done before
assuming this position.

To all Vero Beach Elks, I would like to start a Monthly Sunday Dinner Club. This will be a semi-annual com-
mitment. What this will entail is for $10.00 a month ($60.00 for 6 months), you will get dinner, entertainment and prizes. I am looking to get at least 100 people to join. This will give us $1000.00 per month, cost of food $200.00, entertainment $150.00, a donation to youth activities of $150.00. This leaves $500.00 per month for prizes to be determined how it will be divided. If you are interested please contact Nancy Seeley at 203-736-7764 or email me at [email protected]. If all goes well and we get enough participation the first dinner will be on Sunday October 15, 2017 at 4 pm, and then will continue every 3rd Sunday through March. Please note you need not attend to win prizes.
Queen of Hearts will be starting at the lodge. There
will be a meeting on Sunday, September 17th, 2017 at 4:00
pm to discuss the rules, form a committee and decide
which day of the week and time to have drawing. All inter-
ested members should attend. This is not an easy thing to
run and the more input and help I can get will be greatly
appreciated. If you are interested in helping or being on
the committee and cannot make meeting please contact
me, Nancy Seeley, at 203-736-7764 or send a Email to
CAR SHOW, Father’s Day, 18 June 2017
The 7th Annual Elks/Veterans Car Show dodged rain for the
second year and produced 100 vehicles for display. The
steady stream of spectators bolstered sale of raffle tickets
with proceeds going to local Veterans’ needs. Dads, Grandfa-
thers and Moms came with strollers and children in tow. Cus-
tom, Hot Rods, Classics and Antique automobiles grabbed the
attention of all. Many owners of vehicles have attended all
the years we have had the show and the great hospitality is a
common comment. Each year we have been able to expand
awards, thanks to Velde Ford, Anchor Sponsor, of which 9
awards were given. Many thanks to my team for their con-
sistent contribution to making the show the success that it
was. Will there be another?.... Only time will tell.
Craig L . Waskow, PER, Car Show Chairman.
