A Mother’s Love

There are times when only a mother’s love Can understand our tears,

Can soothe our disappointments And calm all of our fears.

There are times when only a mother’s love

Can share the joy we feel When something we’ve dreamed about

Quite suddenly is real.

There are times when only a mother’s faith Can help us on life’s way

And inspire in us the confidence We need from day to day

For a mother’s heart and a mother’s faith

And a mother’s steadfast love Were fashioned by the angels

And sent from God above.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

May has traditionally been the month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Therefore, we encourage all to set time aside every day to pray the rosary with

your children.

As Christians, our Church asks us to meditate on the saving acts of our Lord‟s life and His Paschal mys-tery. One way in which we can do this is by rec-

ognizing the importance of the Rosary as a means of helping us to reflect on these events continually and not just at Easter. Therefore, during this month, try to pray a little more to the Blessed Virgin Mary. “Let the Rosary be habitually recited by all and in every home” (Pius IX). Our Holy Mother in-vites us to say the Rosary as a powerful weapon

against evil, to bring us to true peace. A simple prayer, humble like Mary, allows us all to pray with Her. With each Hail Mary, we invite Her to pray for us. Our Lady always lis-tens to our request. She joins Her prayer to ours, and intercedes for us

through her son Jesus.

The importance of the Holy Rosary, the contem-

plation and devotion of

Happy Mother’s Day

The staff at St. Pius X would like to extend our very best wishes to all mothers as they celebrate this special day. We thank you for your guid-

prayer using the Rosary leads to a natural desire for reconciliation and peace. It is said that the Holy Rosary is one of the most important gifts to the

world from Mother Mary. Sincerely, L. Sposato

Catholic Education Week: May 5 - 9, 2014

Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, support staff, administration and our parish pastor – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our

Baptism. It is the „together‟ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of

each of us to that growth is both personal and commu-nal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. There are five sub-themes for each day of

Lenten Shoe Box Drive

April 24th marked the end of yet another successful Lenten Shoe Box Drive. Once again this year, the generous donations of our students and families, re-sulted in many thoughtful-ly, filled shoe boxes over-flowing with small toys, books, toiletries, crayons, candy, and so much more. The St. Pius community collected over 250 boxes, an increase from last

year's numbers. Special thanks to our par-ent coordinator, Ms. Lamb, for leading and or-ganizing all our efforts. Our parent volunteers packed and delivered the shoeboxes to Canadian Food for Children – a wonderful, grass-roots organization dedicated to

helping the poor. The volunteers at Canadi-an Food for Children were so grateful for our school's

contribution.

Always a nice feeling to do some good, and with a simple “shoe box” bring a

smile to a child. Many thanks also go to Ms. Miaco‟s grade 3 stu-dents for preparing daily reminders, announce-

ments, and posters. Thanking you all for your

kindness and generosity!

Grades 5/6 & 6 Visit the Daily Bread Food Bank Ms. Ku and Mr. Vale's stu-dents volunteered their time at the Daily Bread Food Bank in April. The students also brought canned foods and non perishable items to show their support. Upon arrival, the students were given a tour of the facility and made aware of the need for a food bank in Toronto. The students helped sort the food donations, sorting over 7000lbs of goods. The students found the experi-ence to be extremely reward-

St. Pius X Cancer Fund - Civvies Day On Friday, April 25 our stu-dents participated in another successful Civvies Day. Once again, we truly appre-ciate the generosity of our parent community for their ongoing support of the St

St. Pius Me to We Committee Initiative

The St. Pius Me to We Committee continue to be actively involved in a num-ber of events. During the months of March-April, our grade 6 students worked with our grade 2 students to fold origami cranes in honour of our grade 2 classmate and friend. Our students folded 1000 paper cranes in honour of Maya! The St. Pius Me to We Committee also led our students and staff in taking

the “We are Si-lent”Campaign. In 1995,

the story of slain child la-bourer Iqbal Masih inspired 12 year old Craig Kiel-burger and Free the Chil-dren was born. On April 17th, St. Pius hon-oured Iqbal‟s legacy by taking a silent stand togeth-er and celebrated the pow-er of unified action.

This year, MalalaYousafzai has joined the, We are Si-lent campaign for the mil-lions of girls around the world silenced by poverty, exploitation and the denial of their right to an educa-tion. Each class participat-ed in a vow of silence, setting an appropriate length of time and mone-tary goal. Some classes challenged themselves to remain silent for the entire school day and some indi-vidual students decided to continue beyond the school

allowed our students to put their words into action by collecting and purchasing books for a $1 and $2. All proceeds will be di-rected to the ongoing Me to We goal of building a school in Haiti. On behalf of the St. Pius Me to We Committee mem-bers, we whole heartedly thank-you for your ongoing support, encouragement and generosity!

The Great Scissor Event Monday, May 12 will see St. Pius X host its sixth “Great Scissor Event”. This event, the brainchild of Ms. Bannon, one of our educational assis-tants, invites members of our community to give 12”/30 cm of their hair to be donated to Angel Hair for Kids (A Child‟s Voice Foundation). day. During this time of silence, the students had the opportunity to reflect upon our many blessings and to think of ways to help those less fortunate. Again, your generosity was over-whelming and the grand total for the day was $1097. The St. Pius Me to We Committee is now prepar-ing for their Gently Used Book Sale on Wednesday April 30th, 2014. Once again your generosity has

World Autism Aware-

ness Day - April 2, 2014 On April 2nd, board wide TCDSB schools, including St. Pius X recognized World Autism Awareness Day. This day successfully increased people's aware-ness about individuals, es-pecially children, with au-tism. In honour of this year‟s celebration of World Autism Awareness Day, St. Pius participated in a syn-chronized TCDSB dance at 10:30 am, entitled, “We Are Stars”. All our students

from JK to grade 8 had the opportunity to dance up a storm. We also took part in raising a flag for Autism Awareness Day. Special thanks to the Wright Family, especially Aidan and Siobhean, who took great leadership roles in making daily announce-ments leading up to our “Light it Up Blue” on World Autism Awareness Day. Many thanks also go to Ms. Brissette, our St. Pius X staff, and students for mak-

ing this special day so memorable.

coach, Mr. Vale. Congratulations to the Junior Girls Volleyball team on their very successful season this year! The girls have been practicing since November and their hard work and ded-ication has paid off! The team placed 2nd in the Our Lady of Lourdes exhibition tournament and placed 1st

month of April. The boys were undefeated through all of the games they played, finishing first place in both tournaments. The skill shown by the team was re-flective of the excellent effort given by the players. Fur-thermore, the team mem-bers demonstrated a stellar level of sportsmanship dur-ing all practices and tourna-ments. It was truly an excel-lent season! The team members are Simon, Levent,

at the South Region division-al tournament. All the ath-letes played very well and displayed excellent sports-manship. The team mem-bers are: Caroline, Victoria, Teresa, Olivia, Hannah, Astrid, Emma, Sarah, Eva,

Evelyn and Regan. Special thanks to the coach-es Mrs. Agres and Mlle. Bondy, and assistant coach-

Holy Thursday Stations of the Cross St. Pius tradition has seen our Lenten Season end with a special and meaningful para-liturgy led by Ms. Oliveira‟s grade 4 class. The entire school community prayed with the grade 4 students as they led us through the Sta-tions of the Cross and walked the footsteps Jesus took for us. Special thanks to Ms. Oliveira for preparing the stu-dents and to all our grade 4 students for your leadership.

down us. This is all the more reason to show our compassion for those who cannot share

in the light.

So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms

around him.

(Luke 15:20)

For the month of May we will be focussing on the virtue of COMPAS-SION. Our quote is from John‟s Gospel, ”Jesus saw her weeping...his heart was touched, and he was deeply moved” (John 11:33). True compassion is not always easy to practice as in the words of Jean Vanier, “Compassion asks us to go where it hurts, to enter into plac-es of pain, to share in brokenness, fear, confu-sion, and anguish.” Who wants to go there when spring has finally arrived and the sun is shining
