Sportsmen Win Major Courtroom Battle Over Hunting on
Public Lands
Misinformed Anti Hunting Protesters fail to realize that Sportsmen fund
almost all conservation efforts in the USA.
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- The lengthy battle over hunting
access on dozens of units of the 100 million-acre National Wildlife
Refuge system has ended—and hunters can declare VICTORY!
In April 2011, federal Judge James S. Gwin ruled for sportsmen across
America by granting summary judgment in favor of the U.S. Sportsmen’s
Alliance Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other
defendants while denying a lawsuit aimed at closing hunting on National
Wildlife Refuge System parcels.
After this ruling, an appeal process was opened, and the appeal clock
began ticking. On Monday, that appeal period came to an end with the
Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) failing to file any appeal.
“This long sought win is a great victory for hunters
everywhere, and reinforces the process of keeping national
wildlife refuges open for hunting, by hunters,” said Bill Horn,
the US Sportsmen’s Alliance director of federal affairs.
This long-running case began in 2003, when the Fund for
Animals, which later merged with the HSUS, filed a lawsuit to
stop hunting on 39 refuges. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Foundation (USSAF), along with other organizations,
intervened on behalf of sportsmen. Anti-hunting groups later
expanded the lawsuit to nearly 60 refuges. USSAF defended
this case for eight years, through many rounds of hard-fought
and costly briefing, providing stability in the defense as the
U.S. attorneys assigned to the case changed frequently over
that time.
Judge Gwin’s April 2011 ruling stopped HSUS’ attempt at
using the National Environmental Policy Act to close hunting
on these refuges. In making the decision, the judge noted that
“Plaintiffs, however, are not entitled to an inviolate sanctuary
for their preferred uses – Congress has determined that, to
the extent possible, hunters, fishers, observers,
photographers, and educators must share the refuge.”
The 1997 Refuge Improvement Act, championed by the USSA, made
hunting, fishing and other wildlife oriented activities priority uses on
refuge units. The Act also mandated hunting and fishing activities be
“facilitated”. Now, 14 years after passage of the Act, Judge Gwin’s ruling
firmly rejects Plaintiffs’ attempt to “end run” the Act.
“The majority of national wildlife refuges were created to be
open to hunting, and now hunters everywhere can continue
to legally pursue their interests on these great public lands,”
said Walter “Bud” Pidgeon, USSA president and CEO. “With
the end of this prolonged battle, this solidly reaffirms that
hunting is a priority use of refuge land wherever and
whenever compatible with wildlife management.”
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund (SLDF), the legal arm of the

U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation, has worked since the beginning of
this case to defend the rights of hunters and has collaborated with other
groups including Safari Club International (SCI). Together, the SLDF
and SCI are co-counsels and also represent Ducks Unlimited, the
National Rifle Association, Izaak Walton League, Delta Waterfowl
Foundation, and California Waterfowl Association.
National Wildlife Refuges provide vast opportunities for hunters seeking
waterfowl, big game, furbearers, and much more. Refuge hunting
provides countless hours of public recreation while also helping
maintaining optimal wildlife populations.
The National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act of 1966
empowered the Fish and Wildlife Service to open refuges to hunting
when compatible with the purposes for which the refuges were
established. Today, hunters can continue to enjoy these benefits thanks
to this important win.

Florida Black Bear Removed From Threatened Species Status
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Last week, Florida’s Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) voted to remove the state’s
black bears from its list of threatened species.
This decision came following a comprehensive biological review
conducted by the FWC staff.
Before the threatened designation is finalized, and the bears are officially
taken of the list of threatened species, the FWC must adopt a bear
management plan. Once complete, the move will give the FWC greater
flexibility and more management options in dealing with the state’s
growing bear population. This could include allowing bear hunting as a
management tool.
The FWC’s black bear study found that the species no longer met any of
the criteria required to remain on the state’s threatened list. It also found
bear numbers in the state have increased for the past 24 years and
continue to increase, that bears are widely distributed throughout the
state, and that current bear populations are sustainable.
“USSA and its members strongly support science-based
wildlife management and conservation,” said Walter “Bud”
Pidgeon, Jr., President and CEO of the U.S. Sportsmen’s
Alliance. “We applaud the Commission for relying on these
principles when reviewing the bears’ status instead of
succumbing to emotional rhetoric from animal rights
activists.”
Animal rights groups have long sought to disrupt the ability of the FWC
to manage Florida’s bear population. In 2006, a lawsuit brought by the
Defenders of Wildlife, the Sierra Club, the Fund for Animals among
others, sought to take management authority away from the state by
having the bears listed on the federal Endangered Species List. The U.S.
Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation, along with the Central Florida Bear
Hunter’s Association, Safari Club International and others intervened in
the lawsuit and were successful at stopping this attempt to usurp state
wildlife management.

HSUS Still Howling & Fundraising off the Backs of Wolves
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- While the latest round of the wolf
protection versus wolf hunting issue went to scientific wildlife managers
in Montana and Idaho by a repeal of the federal threatened species
protection status, it seems HSUS hasn’t been listening.
Currently on the HSUS website is a plea for supporters to write letters to
urge federal officials to save wolves from hunters —and to donate dollars.
The text states: “If these wolves were delisted, the states of
Montana and Idaho would allow widespread hunting in a
manner that could reduce the current struggling population
of wolves by over 75% and decimate the species.”
Montana’s Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department indicate more than 500
wolves live in that state, and wolves have been drastically lowering elk
herds. And since wolves in Idaho and Montana were removed from the

New York Bill Would Allow ForExpanded Trapping MethodsJUN 15, 2011 03:58P.M.
New York Bill Would Allow For Expanded Trapping Methods
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Senate Bill 4213, sponsored by
Sen. Mark J. Grisanti (R- North Buffalo), would permit the Department
of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to allow live cable restraints,
commonly called snares, to be used by trappers. Currently, New York
prohibits the use of all snares.
This bill has been approved by the Senate Committee on Environmental
Conservation and is now pending on the floor of the Senate. Identical
legislation, AB 6203 sponsored by Assemblyman Dennis H. Gabryszak
(D- Cheektowaga), is currently pending in the Assembly Committee on
Environmental Conservation.
“If passed, these bills will give the DEC and New York
trappers an additional method to manage wildlife,” said Evan
Heusinkveld, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance director of state
services. “Cable snares are used across the country and are a
proven and effective way for trappers to harvest wildlife.”
Biologists from coast to coast rely on trapping as an essential aspect of
wildlife management. It is particularly important for predator control
and to minimize diseases such as rabies.
“Cable restraints are a vital tool needed for New York
trappers to help control coyote and beaver populations,” said
Dave Miller, Executive Director of the New York State
Trappers Association. “These traps are very effective,
especially in the late winter months when foothold traps may
start to freeze.”
Take Action! Sportsmen should contact their state senators and
assemblymen and urge them to support Senate Bill 4213 and Assembly
Bill 6203. Inform them there is no reason for a ban on live cable
restraints.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
OLYMPIA, Washington --(Ammoland.com)- State biologists and a
team of volunteers plan to fit up to a thousand Canada geese with leg
bands this month in a study by the Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife (WDFW) of goose population trends in eastern Washington.
Now in its fourth year, the study is designed to develop a better
understanding of nesting declines, hunter harvest patterns and the birds’
use of urban and rural habitat, said Mikal Moore, a WDFW waterfowl
specialist.
“Goose nesting counts have been declining for over a decade
in most rural survey areas, while complaints about urban
geese have been rising,” Moore said. “This study will help us
determine if urban birds are year-round residents or
migratory, and to what extent they are hunted.”
Moore said urban goose numbers can rise dramatically when they do not
migrate, or are not exposed to predators, hunting or other factors that
normally limit populations. Geese may become habituated to urban
areas that are closed to hunting or when people feed them, she said.
The marking project runs June 13 through June 21, when geese are
molting and thus unable to fly. WDFW crews will capture, band, and
collar the geese, using boats and portable trapping panels at urban and
rural locations in or near Wenatchee, Moses Lake, Yakima, the Tri-Cities,
Spokane, and Sprague Lake.
The age and sex of each captured goose will be recorded, and all will be
marked with numbered aluminum leg bands. Some adult geese also will
receive white neck collars with number and letter codes.
Moore asks that waterfowl hunters report leg band information if they
harvest a marked goose. Anyone who spots a goose with a white neck
collar is asked to report band or collar codes, along with locations and
dates, to the U.S. Geological Survey Bird Banding Laboratory at 1-800-
327-BAND or online at www.reportband.gov
To date, biologists have banded 2,523 geese from eight distinct areas in
eastern Washington, Moore said. Of that number, 406 were observed
with neck collars and 359 marked geese were taken by hunters.
“Several of the band returns came from as far away as
northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, although most were
local,” Moore said.

More Details On The FREE Conservation Presentation
New Jersey Outdoor Alliance
TRENTON, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- I have received a number of
requests for details on my offer to do a “conservation” presentation to
clubs or organizations dedicated to improving the outdoors experience.
The presentation is a PowerPoint presentation about 1/2 hour in length.
It puts into perspective that anglers, hunters, divers… are the true
environmental stewards because we understand the importance of
conservation in the workings of Mother Nature.
It also explains how we can use this understanding to educate others,
and to influence public policy that improves environmental health and
expands our opportunities to fish, hunt, dive, etc. and betters the
outdoor experience as we hike, bike, or view nature through binoculars.
The presentation covers three components to improving
environmental health
1. Looking at how Mother Nature uses conservation as a foundation
for ecosystem balance and health.
2. Examines how fishing and hunting play important roles in
supporting environmental awareness, health, and importantly –
connect us to the natural world.
3. Explains the mission of the 3 New Jersey Outdoor Alliance
Organizations and the role they play in educating the public and
policy makers about the principles of conservation.
For those that would like to take a closer look at the idea of
“preservation though conservation” I’ve provided the link that follows.

North Carolinian’s Act Now ToPass Castle Doctrine & ParksCarryJUN 15, 2011 03:34P.M.
North Carolinian’s Act Now To Pass Castle Doctrine & Parks
Carry
CCRKBA.org
BELLEVUE, WA – -(Ammoland.com)- In the shell game
characterizing the North Carolina legislative process, a modified HB 650
passed the Senate Judiciary II Committee today and heads for the floor
for its Second and Third Readings, quite probably tomorrow.
With the legislature likely to recess on Friday, time is short. YOU MUST
RESPOND IMMEDIATELY.
In its current version, HB 650 contains Castle Doctrine, parks carry,
enhanced concealed handgun reciprocity, improvements to our
concealed handgun law, and far more.
Sadly, HB 650 – and your rights – face a threat not from legislators, but
from the efforts of an organization ostensibly dedicated to defending the
Second Amendment. Below is an open letter to North Carolina gun rights
supporters – but equally vital to gun rights supporters everywhere –
which explains the problem.
OPEN LETTER FROM PAUL VALONE AND ALAN GOTTLIEB:
IS SB 594 THE RIGHT BILL?
To: North Carolina Gun Rights Supporters
From: GRNC President F. Paul Valone
CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb
Members of the NRA recently received postcards urging them
to call NC Senate leadership in support of Senate Bill 594,
described in the postcard as “an emergency powers bill [to]
ensure that our Right to Keep and Bear Arms cannot be
suspended” during declared states of emergency.
But while North Carolina’s state of emergency law is indeed a
problem, SB 594 is the wrong solution. Worse, it seems to be
a short-sighted effort by the NRA to grab credit for what
some would have you believe to be a victory.
Why? Because it would render moot – and cause the
dismissal – of crucial litigation to expand recognition of the
Second Amendment in the U.S. Supreme Court. The case is
Bateman v. Perdue. Together with the Michael Bateman,
Virgil Green, Forrest Minges, and the Second Amendment
Foundation, GRNC is working with Alan Gura – the winner
of DC v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago – the cases which
led the Supreme Court to affirm the individual right to keep
and bear arms.
Although GRNC has made numerous entreaties to NRA
representatives to back the Bateman case, they have
apparently fallen on deaf ears. Just as the NRA tried to derail
the DC v. Heller decision in its early stages through its
attempts to repeal the DC gun ban, now it apparently wants
gun owners to regard GRNC – the state’s most vocal and
effective gun rights organization – as somehow “anti-gun”
for realizing that SB 594 is a short-sighted and misguided
vehicle to advance gun rights.
Gun rights supporters have two choices:
Help the NRA achieve a narrow, short-sighted win by
amending HB 650 or other gun bills to include language from
SB 594, the now-dead “state of emergency” bill; or
Help Gura, SAF and GRNC expand the interpretation of the
Second Amendment, which will not only render North
Carolina’s state of emergency law unconstitutional, but will
advance gun rights for everyone, everywhere.
Don’t support GRNC. Don’t support CCRKBA. Don’t support
the NRA. SUPPORT THE SECOND AMENDMENT! And do
so by helping Bateman v. Perdue expand your right to keep
and bear arms.

In sending e-mails, use the subject line: “Pass HB 650 without
amendments”
Dear Senator:
I strongly urge you to vote for HB 650: “Amend Various Gun
Laws/Castle Doctrine” and to oppose ANY AND ALL
amendments to the bill, however well-intentioned they may
appear. The present contents of HB 650 have been voted on
— and passed – in various versions by both the Senate and
House. The bill’s passage is long overdue.
Efforts to amend gun-related legislation to include the
contents of SB 594: “Firearms/State of Emergency” are
misguided and short-sighted. Such an amendment would
render moot the Bateman lawsuit filed by numerous
plaintiffs, including Grass Roots North Carolina and the
Second Amendment Foundation, and argued by famed gun
rights lawyer Alan Gura, to expand the US Supreme Court
interpretation of the Second Amendment.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Some brown pelicans rescued
from the Gulf oil spill last summer and released in Georgia not only

Georgia Department of Natural Resources biologist Tim Keyes recently
spotted eight of the pelicans nesting in a large pelican colony on Little

originally from Louisiana are marked by colored leg bands.
At least seven of the nests have chicks. “So far, they look great,” said
Keyes, who works with DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section.
Efforts to clean and relocate the pelicans once soaked with oil from the

While the pelican sightings are a hopeful sign for those particular birds,
Chuck Hunter with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said there are still
many unanswered questions about the impacts of the oil on the pelican
population in general, as well as specific questions about the pelicans
spotted in Georgia.
“These birds, no matter how clean, likely still have some oil in
their internal systems and females especially may pass this
contaminant on to the chicks,” said Hunter, chief of the
Service’s Division of Planning and Resource Management for
the National Wildlife Refuge System in the Southeast. “But
this does tell me that it’s possible for some oiled birds to
reproduce. Whether or not these chicks will fledge and
survive to reproduce successfully themselves is also unknown
and would take many years to determine.”
More than 1,200 birds were rehabilitated and released in Georgia,
Florida, Texas and upstate Louisiana. Of those, 699 were brown pelicans,
140 of which were released in Georgia last June and July.
In the months during and after the BP oil spill that began April 2010,
more than 7,000 other birds were collected dead, or died soon after.
Hunter said an unknown number of additional birds were most likely
exposed to oil and never recovered, either because they died at sea or in
remote locations on the coast.
Keyes said the Georgia nests have two to three chicks each – normal for
brown pelicans – and at least one parent sporting a leg band. The chicks
have been given a health checkup and biologists are awaiting results of
blood work. Keyes also banded some of the chicks so they can be tracked
after leaving the nest.
“We’ll be visiting each of the eight nests weekly and
monitoring the chicks, hopefully to the point we can say if
they successfully fledged,” he said.
The young birds will start flying in about five weeks.
Of the pelicans released in Georgia, Keyes documented about 25 in the
state this year. None were seen in December or January. It’s likely the
pelicans migrated out of the area and returned to Georgia by mid-March.

Marsh Nature Preserve within Brandywine Creek State Park, DNREC’s
Division of Parks and Recreation will borrow two cows from a Delaware
farm to graze the area and help reduce the number of invasive plants.
The two Belted Galloway cows, from Belted Galloway Cows of
Centerville, will be on loan for seven to eight weeks beginning later this
month. They will graze a five-acre fenced area in the park’s nature
preserve.
“The cows are being used for prescribed grazing, or
restoration,” said Rob Line, Environmental Stewardship
program manager, with the Division of Parks and Recreation.
“The Belted Galloways are an ancient Scottish breed used to
eating coarse grasses, which is why they will work so well on a
site like this,” Line said.
The project is a partnership among Delaware State Parks, which owns
the land, DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Natural Heritage
program scientists, who will help monitor vegetation changes at the site,
and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which provided the $23,500
funding to build the fence.
“This is new for Delaware, but not new for marsh restoration
projects throughout the Northeast,” continued Line. “Very
often, sheep, goats and other cow breeds are utilized for
prescribed grazing.” Historic records show that dairy cows
grazed the area during the 1940s.
The cows will suppress invasive plants – especially reed canary grass
among others - by eating and crushing them since the weight of the cows
breaks up the root mat. The black and white cows weigh approximately
1,200 pounds each.
“Their grazing will be beneficial to Delaware’s native plants
and animals, including rare species that are currently being
compromised by the invasives,” Line said.
The cows will arrive after the fence is completed, expected by the end of
June. Plans are for the cows to be used for seven to eight weeks during
spring and summer months for the next few years. DNREC will monitor
the marsh to determine how much grazing will be needed from year to
year.

National Right-To-CarryReciprocity Act – HR 822JUN 15, 2011 01:51P.M.
The National Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Act – HR 822
National Rifle Association
FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- NRA-ILA would like to draw your
attention to pending federal legislation that needs your immediate
action.
U.S. Representatives Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.)
have introduced vital legislation that will enable millions of concealed
carry permit holders to exercise their right to self-defense while traveling
outside of their home states.
There are currently only two states (Illinois and Wisconsin) that have no
clear legal way for individuals to carry concealed firearms for self-
defense.
Thirty-seven states have shall-issue permit systems that make it possible
for any law-abiding person to obtain a permit, while most of the others
have discretionary permit systems (Vermont has never required a
permit, and Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming offer permitless carry (see
constitutional carry), along with the option of getting permits).
H.R. 822 would make a major step forward for gun owners’ rights by
significantly expanding where those permits are recognized.
Dozens of states have passed Right-to-Carry laws over the past 25 years
because the right to self-defense does not end when one leaves home.
However, interstate recognition of those permits is not uniform and
creates great confusion and potential problems for travelers. While many
states have broad reciprocity, others have very restrictive reciprocity
laws. Still others deny recognition completely.
H.R. 822 would solve this problem by requiring that lawfully issued
carry permits be recognized, while protecting the ability of the various
states to determine the areas where carrying is prohibited within their
boundaries. The bill would not create a federal licensing system; rather,
it would require the states to recognize each others’ carry permits, just as
they recognize driver’s licenses and carry permits held by armored car
guards. Rep. Stearns has introduced similar legislation since 1995.
As of this writing, H.R. 822 has 234 cosponsors. Click here to see if your
Congressman is a cosponsor. However, more support is needed to make
this bill a higher priority.
If your U.S. Representative is not yet a cosponsor, respectfully urge him
or her to support the fundamental right to self-defense by becoming a
cosponsor of H.R. 822. If your Representative is already a cosponsor,
please offer your thanks for his or her support. You can reach your U.S.
Representative by calling (202) 225-3121. Additional contact information
can be found using the “Write Your Representatives” feature at www.

In addition, please contact Reps. Stearns and Shuler and thank them for
their pro- Second Amendment advocacy and leadership in sponsoring
H.R. 822.

Social Networking & New Media for the Second Amendment
Social Networking & New Media for the Second Amendment
NRA - ILA
Pittsburgh, PA --(Ammoland.com)- The value of internet social
networking and new media has exploded in recent years as more and
more NRA members and gun owners are now using Facebook, YouTube,
and Twitter.
These online communities foster an important connection between their
users, and allow distribution of user-generated content (like pictures,
profiles, music, video, and text).
NRA-ILA has been a part of this social technology for some time now,
with a presence on each of these sites. By actively participating in these
new media venues, we are able to reach out to more potential members
and supporters than ever before.
And now more than ever, politicians are also taking full advantage of
these new political techniques in an effort to drum up more youth
support heading into the 2012 elections.
Newt Gingrich tweeted from NRA’s 140th Annual Meetings &
Exhibits in Pittsburgh: “What’s better than a royal wedding in
London? Attending the @NRA Convention in Pittsburgh. I
speak at 1:15 p.m.”
The current king of online social networking is Facebook. If you are not
an NRA Facebook “fan” of NRA, please do what more than 1 million
supporters have already done and join our Facebook group, “National
Rifle Association of America (NRA) – Official Fan Page” at
www.facebook.com/pages/Fairfax-VA/National-Rifle-
Association/22561081832.
YouTube is the current leader in online video sharing, where users can
upload and share video clips on the website. Many political campaigns
are also producing videos exclusively for YouTube, as it is essentially free
to broadcast on the web compared to the exorbitant cost of traditional
media buys.
NRA has its very own channel on YouTube, broadcasting videos,
speeches, and all our latest ads. To view the NRA Channel on YouTube,
please visit: www.youtube.com/user/NRAVideos.
Finally, Twitter is the latest social phenomenon on which NRA-ILA has
an ongoing presence. Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows
users to send regular, real-time text updates (known as “tweets”) to
“followers” who have subscribed to them. To sign up to receive NRA-ILA
“tweets,” please visit www.twitter.com/NRAILA.
If we are going to actively reach and recruit the future leaders of the pro-
gun movement, we must take full advantage of these online social
networking resources. By launching our profiles on these sites, the torch
has been lit for the next generation, so please be sure to help us in
promoting NRA and the Second Amendment by joining us on Facebook,
YouTube, and Twitter!

NRA Activists Prepare for Today and 2012 in Pittsburgh
NRA - ILA
Pittsburgh, PA --(Ammoland.com)- Pro-gun patriots rolled up their
sleeves and went to work on April 29 th at NRA-ILA’s Grassroots
Workshop, held in conjunction with NRA’s Annual Meetings & Exhibits
in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Though most attendees were home state Pennsylvanians, NRA members
were present from states across the country. Diversity in geography
notwithstanding, all were united in a single mission– learning what they
could do to affect legislative change this year and prepare for the 2012
elections!
As they do every year, many of NRA’s officers stopped by the workshop
to pay tribute to the attendees who serve as the tip of our grassroots
arrow.
Former NRA President Ron Schmeits, NRA President David Keene, NRA
First Vice President Jim Porter, and NRA Executive Vice President
Wayne LaPierre each came to the podium and gave credit for NRA’s
successes to those to whom it rightly belongs–our members and
grassroots activists.
Each stressed the need for attendees to re-double their efforts not just
this year, but in preparation for the all-important 2012 elections. Also in
attendance were a number of NRA-ILA’s Election Volunteer
Coordinators who once again are prepared to lead the charge in
recruiting and organizing pro-gun volunteers.
Grassroots staff provided attendees with an overview of the threats and
opportunities we currently face in Congress, along with Grassroots
programs and strategies on how to increase and enhance their legislative
and political activism. The presentation contained a mix of “old school,”
boots-on-the ground, tried and true practices, coupled with a heavy dose
of utilizing new social technologies to enhance our effectiveness.
Topics covered included: NRA-ILA Grassroots programs; federal
legislation; voter registration; letters to the editor; effective
communication with lawmakers; phone banks; yard signs; Facebook;
YouTube; and more.
As expected, NRA’s Annual Meetings were an energizing whirlwind of
activities that showed, without a shadow of a doubt, the dedication of
NRA members and gun owners across this great nation.

Michigan Bats Show No Signs ofWhite Nose SyndromeJUN 15, 2011 01:25P.M.
Michigan Bats Show No Signs of White Nose Syndrome
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- A recent statewide survey of 24 known
bat wintering sites in Michigan showed no sign of White Nose Syndrome
(WNS), a disease caused by a fungus that kills bats by damaging their
skin and causing them to burn up energy reserves prematurely during
hibernation.
The Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with Dr. Allen
Kurta and Steve Smith of Eastern Michigan University, conducted
extensive surveillance this winter of major sites across the northern
Lower and Upper Peninsula where bats are known to hibernate.
“Our targeted efforts focused on areas where WNS may show
up first — our major winter hibernation colonies — while
helping us to identify new populations and critical habitat,”
said Bill Scullon, DNR wildlife biologist. “We’re very pleased
to have found no signs of WNS this season. Unfortunately, it
may only be a matter of time until we do find it.”

Geomyces destructans, the exotic fungus that causes WNS, grows only in
cold conditions, persists in the environment for long periods, and can be
transported by humans. No known human health risks are associated
with WNS and no other wildlife species are affected.
WNS is believed to have originated from Europe and is considered a
global hitchhiker damaging native wildlife. Since the original outbreak
site in eastern New York in 2006, WNS is now found in 18 states and
four Canadian provinces and has killed more than one million bats from
six different species. Currently WNS has been confirmed in Ontario less
than 90 miles from the Michigan border.
“We have identified some very large winter colonies with
some populations exceeding 50,000 bats, particularly in the
western Upper Peninsula,” according to Dr. Allen Kurta. “The
impact of WNS would be devastating for our bats.”
Out of the nine species of bats found in Michigan, cave dwelling bats that
gather in dense groups to overwinter are at the greatest risk of WNS.
This includes little brown bats, big brown bats, tri-colored bats, northern
long-eared bats, and the already federally endangered Indiana bats.
“It’s unusual to have an entire suite of species be at such grave risk from
a single disease pathogen,” said DNR Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Dan
O’Brien.
Bats consume large amounts of insects that cause agricultural crop loss,
damage forests, and affect human health. In a recent economic
assessment to quantify the importance of bats to agriculture, it was
estimated that bats consume pests that save farmers equivalent to $508
million to $1.2 billion dollars per year that would otherwise be spent on
applying greater amounts of chemical pesticides to Michigan crops.
“The DNR is cooperating with researchers, universities, state,
federal and tribal agencies, landowners, and concerned
citizens to address the risk from WNS” according to Chris
Hoving, DNR endangered species coordinator. “We need the
public’s help in preventing the spread of WNS and early
detection efforts.”

The Push to Expose ATF’s Gunrunner Cover-up Continues
Gun Owners of America
Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Leaders from Gun Owners of
America attended a congressional hearing yesterday where Rep. Darrell
Issa (R-CA) laid the groundwork for what could, ultimately, send several
federal agents to jail.
Rep. Issa, who has been investigating the scandal known as Project
Gunrunner, questioned a panel of witnesses with experience in
investigating corruption in the Executive Branch.
The question of the day was: Does the Justice Department have to
respond to subpoenas relating to Project Gunrunner — a scandal which
involves corruption in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives (ATF)?
So far, the Department of Justice has sat on many crucial documents
that have been subpoenaed by Congressman Issa.
But, to a man, each one of the witnesses on this star-studded panel —
many of them former Democrat operatives — all told Rep. Issa that
(short of some unforeseen circumstance) the Obama Administration
SHOULD COMPLY with the subpoenas and give Congress the
documents it is requesting (but which are currently being withheld).
Last week, GOA once again called upon the Congress to cut funding for a
program that allows the Obama Administration to put guns into the
hands of suspected gun smugglers, and then to turn around and blame
law-abiding gun owners for the problem!
Battle Heating Up Over Anti-Gun Obamacare
In other efforts to cut anti-gun spending, the battle to repeal ObamaCare
is still being waged. But recent news over budget battles in Congress are
somewhat distressing.
If Congressional Quarterly is correct, gun owners are going to be
disappointed with a deal that is being hammered out right now on

Capitol Hill. In exchange for raising the debt ceiling, said CQ last week,
politicians are promising that many spending cuts will not occur until
“the next decade or longer.”
This is a real problem. As pointed out by RedState.org last week, it will
be ‘difficult, if not impossible, for Congress to enforce these promised
cuts on a future Congress.’
That means we would get increased spending (for things like anti-gun
ObamaCare) with a promise of cuts in the future that will almost
certainly never occur.
We need to let our Congressmen know that a vote to raise the debt
ceiling WITHOUT voting to cut ObamaCare NOW is an anti-gun vote.
Don’t let them sell you on the phony promise that they will get spending
cuts 20 years down the road. Those cuts will never materialize!
According to RedState last week: “Members of the Tea Party
and the conservative movement need to be prepared for some
serious disappointment if news reports are correct.”
Why? Because in exchange for raising the debt ceiling,
politicians are promising future cuts to spending which will
occur so far in the future that “many of these politicians
cutting the deal will be long gone from Washington, DC.”
That’s why we need to demand spending cuts right now. And cutting
anti-gun ObamaCare and Project Gunrunner would be two good places
to start.
ACTION: Please click here to send a email urging your Representative
to vote NO on raising the debt ceiling unless there are REAL CUTS to
defund ObamaCare and Project Gunrunner that will take place
immediately.

Ohio Restaurant Carry Bill Moving Today
Ohioans For Concealed Carry
Ohio --(Ammoland.com)- The Ohio House of Representatives may call
for a vote on SB17 (the “restaurant carry” bill) this afternoon, June 15.
The House is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m.
Please call your representative immediately and voice your support for
SB17 by going here and looking up who your Representative is – then,
call their offices immediately and express your support for SB17 and tell
them that you will be watching to see how they vote.
A live video stream of House proceedings will be available when the
House goes into session at:
www.ohiochannel.org/Index.aspx?liveStreamId=10
De ja vu?
The House already had this debate a few weeks ago when they took up
HB45, so why are they debating SB17? Quite simply, both bills have
passed the house that they originated in – so HB45 passed the House a
few weeks ago and SB17 passed the Senate even earlier.
SB17 is the superior bill due to an amendment that was adopted in the
Senate that was not adopted in HB45. Therefor, it makes more sense for
the Ohio House to adopt SB17 instead of the Ohio Senate picking up
HB45.
If the Ohio House passes SB17 today without any amendments it goes to
the Governor for his signature. If there are amendments, the bill goes
back to the Ohio Senate for a full Senate vote to concur with any
amendments.

Scheduled speakers include Representative Danny Bubp, sponsor and
primary mover of HB45, the Restaurant Carry Bill, and Kevin Coughlin,
the declared candidate for the Republican primary in the Senate race
against Sherrod Brown. We will also bring you up to date on pending
legislation and actions which OFCC has taken and has planned.
Is your local city park banning firearms?
In the past two weeks we’ve become aware of a city actively writing rules
to ban concealed carry (or firearms in general) in their city parks – and
we’ve become engaged in that process. The State of Ohio is huge, so the
only way WE can become involved is if YOU tell us its happening.
Use the Contact Us link at OhioCCW.org to tell us about any city owned
parks that have either published rules or signs prohibiting concealed
carry anywhere other than a building – so if you see one on a pavilion,
the entrance to a park, the parking lots, or a building that is primarily a
restroom take a photo and get in touch with us.
About:
Ohioans for Concealed Carry, founded in 1999, is a grassroots political
activist organization. When founded, the primary goal of OFCC was
getting concealed carry passed into law in Ohio. With that accomplished,
our mission became to refine the concealed carry law and to expand and
preserve the rights of all gun owners in Ohio. Visit: Ohioccw.org

NASGW Members Score Well in Firearms Inspections
NASGW
Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- At a recent meeting with
representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives, NASGW Board members were provided recent statistics on
inspections of wholesaler member locations by ATF.
The Bureau conducted over 10,500 inspections between 2008-2010,
thirty six of which were firearms wholesalers (FY 2008-2010). Eighty six
percent of wholesale distributors were found to have NO violations,
while 5.56% received reports of violations and 2.78% a warning letter.
5.56% were either out of business, surrendered their license or were
revoked.
Equally impressive were the Firearms Inventory numbers where initially
8.4% of inventory inspected was found missing but the final count after
review and analysis indicated 0% was missing.
By comparison, the industry averages are much higher. For example,
there were 12.96% were given violations notices and 23.36% received a
“Warning Letter.” Industry averages for missing and final inventory
number also indicated 21,041 missing (1.35%) vs. 0% for wholesale
distributors.
“NASGW members do a great job in complying with ATF
Inspections,” stated John Badowski, Firearms Industry
Technical Advisor and NASGW Liaison. “They show a stellar
performance for the industry in best practices.”
Chad Yoder, Division Chief, Bureau of Firearms, Explosives, also praised
NASGW members for the stellar numbers. “We sincerely appreciate the
fantastic cooperation we receive from NAGW members as exemplified by
these statistics. Your members set an example the rest of the industry.”

NRA Announces the 2011 National Shooting Championships at Camp
Perry
National Rifle Association
FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- The 2011 National Rifle and Pistol
Championships will begin July 12 at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Conducted by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Civilian
Marksmanship Program (CMP) with assistance from the Ohio National
Guard, these matches have long been considered the “World Series of the
Shooting Sports.”
A tradition at Camp Perry since 1907, the event is divided into five
separate phases: Pistol, Smallbore 3-Position, Smallbore Prone, High
Power, and Long Range.
“The National Championships at Camp Perry are the high
point of the year for America’s competitive shooters, the
NRA, the CMP, and the many, many volunteers who work
with us each year to make them as successful as they have
been since 1907,” said NRA President David Keene.
“This year promises to be among the best ever thanks to
improved facilities, the continuing assistance of the Ohio
National Guard and the greater interest in participation by
competitors from across the country.”
The National Matches begin each year in early July with the First Shot
Ceremony and National Pistol Championships, concluding in August
with the Long Range High Power Championship. Competitors represent
a vast array of experience including novice shooters, Olympic medalists,
law enforcement officers, military personnel, and international
competitors.
New for 2011 is the invitation-only NRA National Defense Match,
sponsored by FNH USA. Held during the High Power phase, this rifle
match is designed to mimic real-life training and tactics, with shots being
fired from 7 yards up to 500 yards.
MidwayUSA is the Title Sponsor for the 2011 National Championships,
joined by Universal Coin & Bullion for the Pistol Championships,
Springfield Armory for the NRA/Springfield M1A Match, and first-time
sponsor Nosler for the High Power Championships. The support of new
and returning sponsors shows a continued dedication to the competitive
shooting sports and will allow for an enhanced awards schedule.

• July 12-16: NRA National Pistol Championships
