The first pattern was known as the Type 30 rifle (the 30 comes from the 1897 A.D., which was the 30th year of the Emperor Meiji), and this was updated following the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. The new model thus became the Type 38, and it saw service during the First World War – and would remain in service well into World War II and beyond. It was chambered in the 6.5x50SR and more than three million of these were made. The gun clearly was influenced by the German K98 and other Mauser designs. A number of variants existed, including a Type 44 Cavalry Rifle and a Type 97 Sniper Rifle.

Japanese Rifles of World War II

Gun Collecting

Japanese Arisaka Rifles

FirearmsTruth.com

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- Japanese rifles often get a bad rap, at

least when compared to the rifles of the other major combatant powers

of World War II.

Even collectors of militaria view the Japanese rifles as being of a lower

quality, but this isn’t quite true.

One reason for this misconception is that much of what survived, and is

now in collections is actually from the later war years, thus not up to the

highest quality.

“The fit, finish & overall quality of manufacture on early

Japanese weapons equals if not surpasses weapons made by

other participants of World War II,” explains advanced

Japanese militaria collector Jareth Holub. “It wasn’t until the

very last two years, due to U.S. air strikes, that factories

started producing subpar products.”

The result is that many of the small arms encountered - notably the

famous rifles - are actually late war items. This has resulted in the

misconception that Japanese small arms were always somewhat inferior.

It is true however that the two main combat rifles, the Arisaka Type 38

and the Type 99 rifles were essentially based on technology used a

generation earlier – but it should be remembered that the same held true

for most of the other powers at the start of World War II as well. Even

the United States was still in the process of rearming with the M1 rifle,

and thus large numbers of 1903 Springfield rifles were used in the early

stages of the war.

Likewise, Germany and Russian were using their respective bolt action

rifles at war’s end, as were the British. The Japanese actually faced

greater resource problems than the other powers, but they also had

cultural issues – essentially a “want not, need not” mentality.

Additionally, another issue complicated matters for the Japanese

military, namely the acknowledged rivalry and simmering hatred

between the Japanese army and navy.

“This led to the navy having to struggle to procure arms and

equipment from the government & eventually led up to the

navy establishing its own arsenal systems,” emphasizes

Holub. “This backbiting and infighting hindered the

cooperation between the branches of service and greatly

affected the outcome of the war. The Japanese were a very

frugal people who didn’t believe in wasting anything

including bullets. This was one of the reasons why their

submachine gun production was limited. Had they increased

production and distribution it might have changed their

combat tactics.”

The two main rifles used by the Japanese in World War II are both often

called the “Arisaka.” These were named after Colonel Nariake Ariska,

who was responsible for creating the commission to find a new rifle. The

first pattern was known as the Type 30 rifle (the 30 comes from the 1897

A.D., which was the 30th year of the Emperor Meiji), and this was

updated following the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. The new model thus

became the Type 38, and it saw service during the First World War – and

would remain in service well into World War II and beyond. It was

chambered in the 6.5x50SR and more than three million of these were

made. The gun clearly was influenced by the German K98 and other

Mauser designs. A number of variants existed, including a Type 44

Cavalry Rifle and a Type 97 Sniper Rifle.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, which began in 1931, it was

apparent that a larger cartridge was needed and the Japanese adopted

the 7.7x58mm round, based on the British .303 (7.7x57R). To confuse

collectors and military historians for decades, this rifle was designated

the Type 99 – which in this case refers to the Japanese year 2099, which

was believed to be the date of the creation of the world.

It was originally the intention of the Imperial Japanese Army to replace

the aging Type 38 with the Type 99, but this was not possible, and with

limited resources the two firearms were used side-by-side. Thus the

moniker of “Arisaka” is used for both rifles. Because many of the later

war rifles were of lower quality, and often called “last ditch” there is a

common misconception that all Type 99s were last ditch, but this is far

from the case.

Some three and a half million of the Type 99 rifles were made, not

counting variations, including the regular short rifle as well as Type 99

Long Rifle, and the Sniper Rifle Type 99. Another version of the rifle, the

Type 44 Carbine, was designed primarily for use as a cavalry rifle –

although this shouldn’t be confused with the Type 38 Cavalry rifle, a

slightly shorter version of the Type 38. The most interesting version is by

far the Type 2 Paratroop Rifle, which could broken down into two parts.

A final variation are those Type 99 Short Rifles (some 133,000) that were

rechambered by the Republic of Korea Army to fire the American .03-06

Springfield cartridge.

Today, the more valuable Type 99s are those with the imperial

chrysanthemum intact. Often these were defaced, reportedly by

surrendering Japanese soldiers to “preserve the Emperor’s honor,” while

another story is that it was a V for Victory and was done by the US

Military. Either way, an intact stamp is the more desirable version.

Championships of the Americas – Shooting Competition

Preview

USA Shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -(Ammoland.com)- While many

Americans will be enjoying turkey and stuffing during next week’s

Thanksgiving holiday, members of the USA Shooting CAT Team will be

aiming for 2012 Olympic quotas.

The Confederaciòn Americana de Tiro (CAT) or Championships of the

Americas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is an intercontinental championship

featuring North, South and Latin American federations. The top podium

finishers will earn 2012 Olympic quotas for their nation.

The event begins on Nov. 20, with an action-packed day of events, and

concludes on Nov. 26. Bryant Wallizer (Little Orleans, Md.), Matt

Wallace (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Spc. Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas)

are the Americans competing in the first event-Men’s 10m Air Rifle. They

will be followed by Teresa Meyer (Dearborn, Mich.), Brenda Shinn

(Riverside, Calif.) and Libby Callahan (Columbia, S.C.), all competing in

Women’s 25m Sport Pistol. Day one continues with competition on the

shotgun range and Women’s Trap. The red, white and blue will be

represented by reigning National Champion Rachael Heiden (Clinton,

Mich.), 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Corey Cogdell (Eagle River,

Alaska) and National Championship silver medalist Kelsey Zauhar

(Lakeville, Minn.). Wrapping up the day will be Men’s 50m Free Pistol

with performances from Olympians Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) and

Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.). With Olympic quotas on the line, the

U.S. will be looking for podium performances from its talented squad.

International Shooting Sports

On Sunday, Nov. 21, new National Rifle Team member Meghann Morrill

(San Antonio, Texas) and veteran Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.) will take

the stage in Women’s 10m Air Rifle. Without heated competition from

the Chinese, the U.S. is expected to medal. The only other final that day-

Men’s Trap-will feature Olympic Training Center Resident Athletes

Collin Wietfeldt (Hemlock, Mich.) and John Mullins (Port Orchard,

Wash.). Moreover, 2008 Paralympian Danielle Fong (New York, N.Y.)

and 2012 Paralympic hopeful Sgt. 1st Class Josh Olson (Salem, Ala.) will

be competing in the prone event in order to shoot Minimum Qualifying

Scores for the 2012 Paralympic Games.

Thanksgiving week will begin with Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol where

the USA will be represented by Cpl. Brad Balsley (Uniontown, Pa.) and

Emil Milev (Tampa, Fla.). That same day, Billy Crawford (Johnstown,

Ohio) and Ian Rupert (Muncy, Pa.), who both earned team medals at the

World Shooting Championship, will be shooting for the USA in Men’s

Double Trap. Though Josh Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) already won one

Men’s Double Trap quota with his gold medal performance at the World

Shooting Championship, the U.S. is looking to secure its second and final

Men’s Double Trap quota.

Beaman and Turner will again take the stage in Men’s 10m Air Pistol

with additional support coming from Nick Mowrer (Butte, Mont.). Sgt.

Joe Hein (Mason, Mich.) and Sgt. George Norton (Fort Benning, Ga.)

will represent the U.S. in the Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position event. The

U.S. is eligible to win two quotas in this event, so hopefully a win in Rio

will secure one and another can be won during the 2011 World Cup

season. Also shooting in their second event, Meyer and Shinn will toe the

line in Women’s 10m Air Pistol.

The competition ends on Nov. 26 with Men’s Skeet and Women’s 50m

Rifle Three Position. Though the U.S. won quotas in both events at the

World Shooting Championship (courtesy of Sgt. Vincent Hancock

(Eatonton, Ga.) and Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.)), the opportunity still

exists to send a second shooter to London in 2012 with wins in each

event. In Men’s Skeet, Resident Athletes Frank Thompson (Alliance,

Neb.) and BJ Blanchard (Vidor, Texas) will vie for the top of the podium.

Brian Aitken Citizen Gun OwnerJailed For Following The LawNOV 19, 2010 10:49A.M.

Gun Owner Jailed For Following The Law

National Association for Gun Rights

Colorado -(Ammoland.com)- Do you follow the rules? Do you consider

yourself a law-abiding citizen?

Do you think your rights are safe now that Republicans took over the

House of Representatives?

You couldn’t be more wrong.

Just following the rules could land you in prison! Despite the legislative

victories of the last election, the anti-gunners and statists across the

country are finding new ways to violate your rights.

In August, Brian Aitken — who followed New Jersey’s draconian firearm

laws to a “T” — was convicted by the state’s anti-gun kangaroo court of

“unlawful possession of a handgun.”

Brian’s “crime” was simply owning handguns in the first place.

You see, in New Jersey you’re required to get a permit to purchase a

handgun by Big Brother State Government. This is not a permit to OWN,

simply to purchase: however, the jackboots in New Jersey’s state police

treat anyone in possession of a handgun without such a permit as a felon.

7

Brian Aitken Citizen not Criminal

While moving from Colorado to New Jersey, Brian was transporting

three handguns — which were legally purchased in Colorado — between

his mother’s house and his new apartment.

Because of some stress factors in his life, Brian’s mother called the police

for a “welfare” check of Brian. Brian’s mother was a social worker who

had been conditioned by years of government work to trust the state to

oversee emotionally charged situations.

The state police searched his car and discovered the handguns, locked in

cases and separate from ammunition, as New Jersey law requires.

Despite not violating ANY of New Jersey’s outrageous firearms laws,

Brian was arrested for the “unlawful” possession of a handgun.

Throughout his trial, the anti-gun statists in the New Jersey legal system

routinely blocked Brian’s attorney from presenting evidence of Brian’s

innocence. New Jersey law specifically states that the transportation of

handguns between residences is legal.

Despite the incontrovertible evidence that Brian was transporting his

legally purchased handguns from his mother’s home to his new

apartment, the anti-gun Judge refused to permit Brian’s legal team from

informing the jury of this portion of state law.

Jurors even asked the judge three times if state law contained

exemptions for the transportation of handguns from one residence to

another, but the anti-gun crusader disguised as a judge refused to

answer.

Additionally, federal law allows for the transportation of firearms

between residences without fear of state prosecution; however, the same

anti-gun judge refused to take federal law into consideration in Brian’s

case.

Brian Aitken was convicted of felony possession of a handgun and faces

up to seven years in jail.

Think you’re safe ’cause you live in a “pro-gun” state? Think again.

Expect to hear statists across the country calling for increased

enforcement of “existing” gun law.

That’s code for twisting current law to maliciously prosecute gun owners,

and it’s nothing new: the institutional gun lobby has been promoting this

for more than a decade.

State and local governments will respond to this anti-gun cattle call and

will race to create new ways to infringe upon your rights through

bureaucratic fiat and “rule” changes.

That’s exactly what happened in New Jersey and an innocent man was

convicted simply because he owned guns.

If you’re as outraged about this case as I am, there is something you too

can do.

Click here to sign a petition to New Jersey’s Republican Governor Chris

Christie and urge him to pardon Brian Aitken and publicly call for the

repeal of New Jersey’s current law requiring a permit to own a firearm.

Governor Christie has national political ambitions and this case will

clearly show what he thinks about the Second Amendment.

Brian Aitken’s prosecution and conviction is simply outrageous and it’s a

cautionary tale to all gun owners.

Anti-gunners will stop at nothing — and I mean NOTHING — to put law-

abiding gun owners behind bars.

If you’re as outraged as I am about Brian Aitken’s malicious prosecution,

please click here to send a petition to New Jersey’s Republican Governor

Outdoor Lovers Rave About Limit Out Production Comic Book

Character Dale Dunnerway

Dale Dunnerway is a man who works in corporate America only to

earn money to hunt

Rather Be Hunting Guy

Minneapolis, MN -(Ammoland.com)- There is a “Rather-Be-Hunting-

Guy” in every family. It is the person who spends too much money on

outdoor gear and smells like he has been in the woods for way too long.

This is the family member who would gladly abandon a normal life and

move to the country to become an outdoor guide.

Rather Be Hunting Guy Comic

Dale Dunnerway holds this dream. He sits all day in a small cubicle and

dreams of a life in the woods. He wants to be outdoors enjoying beef

jerky, practicing duck calls, and building a deer stand.

Dale is a 25-year-old who is a management trainee for an outdoor

furniture and lighting company. His biggest complaints are that he does

not have enough vacation time and that hunting clubs cost way too

much. His dream job is as a vice president of taxidermy.

Limit Out Productions produced two new Dale Dunnerway comic books.

The first comic was released in 2008 and is entitled On the Job with

Rather-Be-Hunting Guy. Limit Out followed this book in 2009 with

Rather-Be-Hunting Guy & Life’s Demands. Both comics follow Dale’s

dreams of becoming a professional hunter and how his hobbies affect his

co-workers lives. Their goal is to release one comic each year in time for

the hunting and gift buying season.

Characters in the Dale Dunnerway series include:

• Dale: Single, nuts about hunting, and wants a raise to pay a deposit for

a trip to Montana

• Joe: Dale’s coworker who loves sports and thinks Dale may need

psychiatric counseling

• Travis: Another of Dale’s coworkers who thinks Dale just got lucky and

landing a good office job

• Jenny: Dale’s coworker who thinks Dale is a nut job

• Hubert: This is Dale’s boss. He went hunting with Dale and sick with

Taco’s Friday Revenge.

About Rather-Be-Hunting-Guy

Dale Dunnerway is plain nuts about hunting and fishing. He’s gone a lot,

spends too much money on outdoor gear and looks and smells like he’s

been in the woods for weeks at a time. His dream is to move to a

mountain state and become an outdoor guide. His parents and co-

workers want him to grow up but Dale would Rather Be Hunting.

Dale Dunnerway comics are produced by Limit Out Productions and can

be purchase at www.ratherbehuntingguy.com.

Obama Nominates Gun Grabber to Head ATF

Georgia Gun Owners

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Fresh off the monumental

defeat President Obama faced in the midterm elections, he’s right back at

it again.

He’s nominated yet another Chicago-trained, anti-gunner to be a

member of his administration.

According to David Codrea at the Gun Rights Examiner, President

Obama has nominated Brady Campaign-backed Andrew Traver to be the

new head of the ATF.

The threat is still out there. The good news is that Mr. Obama must get

Mr. Traver confirmed through the Senate.

You and I need to put pressure on our Senators, Chambliss and Isakson,

and urge them to come out against Traver’s nomination — immediately.

Please call Senators Chambliss and Isakson at once and demand they

vote against the nomination of Andrew Traver at every opportunity:

• Senator Chambliss: 202-224-3521

• Senator Isakson: 202-224-3643

We don’t have time to wait. President Obama still remains intent on

loading the Federal Government down with gun grabbers.

Take two minutes today and contact your Senators — demand they stand

up and fight the nomination of anti-gun ATF-nominee Andrew Traver.

Wiley X Sponsored ShooterPatrick Flanigan Breaks OwnWorld RecordNOV 17, 2010 10:11A.M.

Wiley X Sponsored Shooter Patrick Flanigan Breaks Own

World Record

Young Top Gun Shoots From the Hip and Breaks Seven Hand Thrown

Targets.

Xtreme Shooter Patrick Flanigan

Wiley X Eyewear

Livermore, CA --(Ammoland.com)- Wiley X Eyewear is proud to

announce that one of its top sponsored shooting superstars has just

surpassed his own incredible world record.

Xtreme Shooting virtuoso Patrick Flanigan raised the bar he himself set,

during the recent filming of Shooting USA’s “Impossible Shots” TV show,

with a new world record: a mind blowing 7 hand thrown clay targets

from the hip with a pump shotgun.

The 31 year-old Flanigan had the shooting world’s collective jaws

dropping when he originally did what they thought couldn’t be done,

breaking six hand thrown clays in a row, but now seven is the number to

beat, and he’s probably the shooter who will eventually make it eight. But

in the meantime, he and his sponsored eyewear team at Wiley X are

thrilled with the amazing victory.

“The record I broke is for throwing seven clays by hand and

shooting each with a separate shot from the hip with a pump

shotgun,” said Flanigan. He also plans on breaking several

more world records over the next few months and attributes

much of his success to his advanced equipment.

“My Wiley X Black Ops Revolvr glasses help me see with the

kind of clarity and consistency I absolutely rely on to set

records in any conditions. Trusting my sight to anything but

the best is not an option.”

Thanks to Wiley X, shooters are no longer limited to traditional shield

style shooting glasses as Wiley X is the only premium sunglass

manufacturer that certifies all of its products to exceed ANSI Z87.1-2003

high velocity and high mass impact standards and surpass strict OSHA

safety ratings. Not to mention, all Wiley X Changeable Series lens models

stand up to the much more stringent United States military VO ballistic

standards as combat protective equipment, so shooters know they have

the right High Velocity Protection (HVP) eyewear tailored for extreme

safety and style.

Flanigan is no stranger to the extreme — extreme achievement in

shooting sports during extreme conditions, and pushing himself to the

extreme in other sports. During his incredible career he has broken eight

Xtreme Shooting World records, including shooting 12 shotgun rounds

in 1.42 seconds. When he’s not breaking targets and world records, he

“relaxes” as a black belt in karate and setting Guinness Book of World

Records feats in drumming.

“Patrick is an incredibly versatile athlete, and personifies the

spirit of high performance and high excitement that we create

our glasses to honor,” says Myles Freeman Jr., President of

Sales for Wiley X.

“He pushes the limits of what’s humanly possible, and he’s

not slowing down for anything. We’re proud to be a part of

his amazing career and are excited to see what else he will

achieve in changing the face of the shooting sports world.”

organization” classified under IRS Code as a 501(C)(3), 501(C)(4) or 527

that engages in the election or defeat of any person to state or local

elective office; the passage or defeat of any public question; or that

Hunting and TrappingDepictions Exempted fromAnimal Crush Video LegislationNOV 16, 2010 08:15P.M.

Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Depictions Exempted from

Animal Crush Video Legislation

Congressional Sportsmen

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Members of the Congressional

Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) successfully exempted video depicting

hunting, trapping and fishing in the “Animal Crush Video Prohibition

Act of 2010” as approved by the U.S. Senate in September and passed in

the U.S. House of Representatives last night .

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF), in partnership with

Safari Club International (SCI) and the National Rifle Association

(NRA), earlier this year expressed concerns to the leadership of the CSC

that the legislative language in the bill should explicitly exclude videos

and television programs showing legal hunting, fishing and trapping

activities.

“While we all oppose malicious cruelty to animals such as

those seen in these videos, it was vitally important that this

legislation specifically address the filming, distribution and

sale of legally produced hunting, fishing and trapping video

and television programming,” said CSC House Co-Chair, Rep.

Paul Ryan.

On April 20 of this year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a 1999

federal law that prohibited the production and distribution of videos

depicting the shocking form of animal cruelty known as “crush videos.”

CSF joined Safari Club International in an amicus curiae brief in this

case, raising concerns about the potential impact of the decision on

hunting videos.

“This legislation, thanks to the work of the CSC, alleviates the

concerns that the sportsman’s community had about a

potential ban on legitimate hunting, fishing and trapping

videos,” said CSF President Jeff Crane.

About:

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation celebrated its 20th

anniversary in 2009. Throughout this time, CSF has maintained a

singleness of purpose that has guided the organization to become the

most respected and trusted hunting and fishing organization in the

political arena. Visit: www.sportsmenslink.org
