TOGETHER WE
Student Voice
Last week at Franklin we participated in Harmony Day and
Clean Up Australia Day. Our fearless and courageous
reporters Jimmy McAlister and Reegan Oddy decided to
investigate these two important occasions on the school
calendar.
Jimmy:
Clean Up Australia Day was started 30 years ago by Ian Kiernan, who was a champion Australian sailor. Whilst he
was sailing he noticed lots of rubbish in the water. He decided we needed to clean up the land so
the rubbish did not get washed into our oceans.
This simple idea ignited an enthusiasm and desire among
the local community to get involved and make a difference.
Did you know that on Clean
Up Australia Day cigarette butts are the single most reported litter item across Australia, representing 20% of all recorded items.
The official day for Clean Up Australia was March 1st but our school clean-up day was Thursday 19 March. The 3-6 classes cleaned up Cedar Ave Park, which is adjacent to our school.
The K-2 classes cleaned up the school playground.
Reegan:
The official Harmony Day message is “Everyone Belongs”. Franklin celebrated Harmony Day on Friday 20th March. All students were invited to wear orange which the official colour for Harmony Day. The colour orange shows support for valuing everyone from different cultures.
In Year 6 we had a great time sharing the Harmony Day
message with our Kindergarten buddies. We visited different classrooms and shared activities together. My buddy is Annika from Banks and I interviewed her about Harmony Day.
Annika thinks that Harmony Day is a special day when you wear orange and on that day we should be nice to everyone and share things like
toys with each other.
Annika thought it was fun to learn about a Harmony Day with her Year 6 buddy.

Thursday 19th of March 2020 was Franklin’s day for Clean Up Australia Day. All students Kinder to Year 6 were involved
with keeping our environment clean. The Infants department walked around the school and picked up a lot of rubbish
from the gardens and fence line. Well done to the infants!
The Senior students went out of the school grounds to Cedar Park. All students managed to find some rubbish that was
left in the park. A big thank you to Mrs Brenda Argaet for sweeping up all the broken glass that was on the footpath. Stu-
dents enjoyed keeping our Tumut community clean. Thank you to all teachers and students for supporting the Clean Up
Australia Day especially Mrs Tamara Marko and Mr Rav Reddy for organising the event.

on COVID-19, also called the Coronavirus. This link tells par-
ents how it spreads, who is at risk and what you can do to
stop it spreading.
Parents, please take the time to talk to your children about
the virus, washing their hands and staying a safe distance
from other people when in public.
It’s important for students to feel safe and secure at this
time and for everyone to be sharing the correct infor-
mation.
