Substation
• An electrical substation is subsidiary station of an electricity generation, transmission and distribution system where voltage is transformed high to low or reverse using transformers.
• Examples of substation- 1. 400KV/200KV substation 2. 220KV/132KV substation 3. 132KV/33KV substation
Durgapur 220 KV substation• The Durgapur 220/132 KV substation is connected with WARIA
through a double circuit 220 KV with B.K.T.P.P through double circuit 220 KV tie line, with PURULIA, S.T.P.S through a 220 KV single circuit line. On the other hand this substation is linked up with D.P.L Power station through a double circuit 132 KV line and is feeding load to MANKAR, BOLPUR, UKHRA and BARJORA through a double circuit 132 KV line. There are 3 numbers of 220/132/33 KV, 160 M.V.A Autotransformers inter connecting the 220 KV and 132 KV main bus.
• The 220 K.V side of the substation has a double bus arrangement i.e. MAIN-1 & MAIN-2 with five isolator scheme, where as the 132 KV side has MAIN & TRANSFER bus arrangement with three isolator scheme.

• Durgapur 220 KV substation evacuates more than 400 MW power from
1.Bakreshwar thermal power stations. 2.Santhaldihi thermal power stations. 3.Waria thermal power stations of DVC. 4.Durgapur thermal power stations of DPL. 5.Power of Central Sector from Purulia 400/220 KV

• It is divided into two parts- 1. Panel Section A. Control Panel Section B. Relay and Protection Panel Section 2. Switch Yard A. 220KV Section B. 132KV Section
Panel Section
• It is a room which contains all type of panels.• It has two sections: 1. Control Panel Section: It contain panels related
to controlling instruments. E.g.:- Feeder panel. 2. Relay and Protection Panel Section: It contain
panels related to relay system and protection system. E.g.:- Relay panel, Line protection panel.

Switch Yard
• It is the field where components used in controlling supply and measuring supply (incoming and outgoing) are placed.
• Some of this many components are: LA, Circuit breakers, Isolator, Main bus bars, Wave
traps, CT, PT, CVT etc.
Lightning arrester: Protective device Equipment use power poles and towers, power
transformers, circuit breakers.
Wave trapper: Trap signal and send it to PLCC control room

Important Terms used in Substation:
A. Tripping: Power goes due to overload. It is for the protection of components.
B. Shut down: Power is cut due to maintenance in progress. It is done manually.
C. Break down: Power goes due to any fault in line. When fault is removed power is back.
