    Creating a beautiful and

    bountiful garden is a pop-

    ular pastime for people

all across the country. It is impor-

tant to keep in mind that aesthet-

ically appealing plants may beappetizing to area wildlife, includ-

ing deer. Those who do not want

their gardens to turn into an all-

    you-can-eat buffet for deer, rab-

bits and other wild animals can

    take a more proactive approach

    to gardening.

    Deer are opportunists who

will no doubt see your garden as

a salad bar ripe with all of their

    favorite foods. As housing devel-

opments continue to encroachon the natural habitats of deer

    and other animals, these animals

    are becoming more visible. Deer

may not be able to forage for

    food effectively in their smaller,

    natural surroundings, or they

    may become accustomed to the

    easy pickings they find in

    neighborhood yards. Either way,

you may encounter a deer in or

    around your area.

    Keeping deer at bay in-

    volves some work and mainte-

nance on the part of a home-

    owner. There are safe and

    humane methods to repelling

deer, or at least blocking access

    to the plants worth protecting.

Here are the main ways to deer-

    proof a garden.

    FENCE IT

Fences are one way to deter

deer from entering a yard and

dining on your garden. Keep in

mind that deer can jump fences

that are quite tall, but they have

    to be especially motivated to

    jump an eight-foot-tall fence.

Still, they tend to be wary about

scaling a fence when they can-

not see what is on the other side.

Therefore, if you are fencing out

deer, choose a fence that camou-

flages the garden well and com-pletely encloses the area to be

protected. If you do not want

the fence to be solid, consider

    putting stakes or thorny plants

within the garden so that the

deer will hesitate to jump into

    the garden.

    SCARE THEM

    Deer are naturally skittish

    around people, but over time

    they can become quite compla-

cent around human beings.Once a deer decides that some-

thing will not present a threat,

the deer can adapt to its

    presence.

    Motion-activated devices

may not work, nor the presence

of pets. Predator urine is typical-

    belief and conviction that

what APG does for our clients

    is absolutely the finest oppor-

tunity or solution to their par-

    ticular financial situation or

    problem without exception!

    The paragraph above is

the APG credo that each of

    our franchisees across the

    country works and lives by.

What is your personal or busi-

ness credo? Do you have one?

Are you prepared to make a

    public affirmation of your

    business intentions, mission

    statement or mantra? Do you

    feel comfortable standing on a

soap box, yelling out to the

    spectators, audience and your

    intended prospects, that you

    stand for something? Does

your passion and plan for win-

    ning at your business, occupa-

    tion, project or goal include

    helping others succeed in

    achieving their goals, dreams

and ambitions? If so, then you

are on the right path to pros-

    perity!

    You reap what you sow.

of his hire. Luck is spelled W-

    W-E-A-T. You beat 98 per-

    cent of your competition by

    consistently showing up first

    and leaving last. He who

serves best will best be served.

Do you need a check-up from

the neck up? Do you put your

    perspiration behind your

inspiration? Do you constant-ly display a winning attitude?

ing in one of these mission

    statements will keep you warm

    Retirees share certain

    common goals. Every retiree

    or near-term retiree I have

ever met shares the same goals

with their money: 1. Safety of

principal. 2. Income for life. 3.

    Growth of capital. 4.

    Liquidity. 5. Tax advantages.

    No one has ever objected

to these five basic principles of

    retirement planning. The pri-

mary problem I have found in

my 32 years in this industry is

    that very few people start

    pursing the proper financial

    dreams and goals early

    enough. The second problem

was a general lack of educa-

tion of how, why, when and

where to accomplish theseuniversal retirement goals,

    compounded by the fact that

the price of failing to prepare

    was never made apparent to

    them.

    Anew study shows that

    blackberries could

    lead to healthy gums.

The study states that the anti-

    bacterial properties of black-

berries lower the risk of gum

    disease and promote gum

    health.

    There are also prior

    studies that have indicated

the positive aspects of black-berries, claiming they pre-

    vent cancerous cells from

    spreading.

    Many studies have

shown that eating a diet filled

    with fruits and vegetables is

    beneficial to ones health.

This type of diet also lowers

the risk of oral cancer, dia-

    betes, heart disease and other

    ailments.

    Since good oral health

leads to good overall health, it

    can be extremely beneficial

    for people to incor-

    porate blackberriesinto their diets.

    Keeping fit is essential

    for the older popula-

    tion, but many forms

    of exercise can be difficult.

Pilates is a great way to stay

    in shape while reducing the

    risk of injury other exercises

    may cause. Pilates focuses on

    the quality of movement,

making it one of the best

    ways for seniors to stay

    healthy.

    Pilates is suitable for

    everyone, regardless of age or

    level of fitness. Pilates can

    enhance your immune sys-

    tem, breathing and circula-

    tion, while reducing stress,

    fatigue, headaches and back-

    aches.

    Pilates lengthens the

    muscles of the body instead

of building bulk. This is great

    for the older population

    because it improves balance,

    posture and alignment. All of

    these things are important to

    continue our daily activities

    efficiently. Each Pilates move

    has a beginner, intermediate

    and advanced stage, so the

class can be adapted to the

    individual.

It is never too late to

    start exercising, and the gen-

tle stretches of Pilates are a

    perfect place to start.

    ness coordinator at Cedar

    Hydroponic units may be fed

    by both natural sunlight, as

    yields nutritionally superior

    products, full of living

    sources enables units to pro-

40 times the produce of tradi-

they only use 10 percent of the

    Intestinal parasites can cause

    debilitating medical prob-

lems to dogs and cats, and

even to us humans! Most pets

    will have worms at some

    point in their lifetimes. These

    worms are most commonly

seen in puppies and kittens but

    any animal is susceptible, even

a pet that never goes outside.

    Roundworms, hookworms,

    whipworms, giardia, and coc-

cidia are the most common cul-

    prits of these infections.

    Routine dewormings and fecal

    examinations are the mainstays

    of identification and treatment

    of these parasites. Year round

    total parasite control, usually in

the form of a monthly heart-

    worm preventative, is the way

    to decrease the incidence of

    intestinal parasite infections.

    Fecal exams performed by

    your veterinarian can diagnose

    intestinal parasites by identify-

ing the eggs of the worms.

    Adult worms like roundworms,

    hookworms, and whipworms

are usually not shed in stools,

    making identification by the

    pet owner difficult. However,

the eggs of these worms are

    present, though they are shed

    intermittently. These eggs are

microscopic and too small to be

    detected with the naked eye.

    The Companion Animal

    Parasite Councils guidelines

    recommend fecal examinations

two to four times during the

first year of life and one to two

    times per year in adults,

    depending on health and

    lifestyle factors.

    Roundworms are the most

    common intestinal parasite of

    dogs and cats. Roundworm eggs

are shed in the feces of dogs

and cats and are spread when

animals or people come in con-

tact with the feces or soil.

These worms can also be trans-

    mitted to puppies before they

are born and to kittens through

    infected milk from the mother.

    Roundworms can cause diar-

    rhea, vomiting, and the potbel-

    ly appearance seen in many

    puppies. Roundworms do pose

    a significant risk to humans.

    Contact with contaminated

soil or feces can result in

    human ingestion and infection.

    Children are more vulnerable

    to exposure because they are

more likely to put dirt or other

    objects into their mouths.

    Roundworms in humans can

cause fever, lung and liver dam-

    age, and even blindness.

    Hookworms are also a

    common parasite in dogs and

    cats. These worms are acquired

by adult pets through skin pen-

    etration and ingestion of larvae

    in contaminated soil. Puppies

and kittens can also be infected

    across the placenta and

    through milk. These worms

    hook themselves to the intes-

tinal wall and feed on blood,

    and can rapidly cause anemia

    and sometimes black, tarry

    stool. Hookworm larvae can

    infect humans by penetrating

the surface of a persons skin,

    typically through bare feet.

This results in itchiness at the

    point where the larvae enter

the skin and visible tracks on

    the skin from the worms

    migration called cutaneous

    larva migrans.

    Whipworms infect only

our dogs, not cats. The worms

are passed in the feces and can

    cause bloody diarrhea in dogs.

    The biggest issue with whip-

worms is how tough they are in

    the environment, surviving

    adverse conditions and ex-

    tremely resistant to drying.

    This makes prevention and

    diagnosis very important.

    The good news is

    intestinal parasites are easi-

    ly treated with medication

    as prescribed by your veteri-

    narian. The Companion

    Animal Parasite Councils

    guideline for deworming and

    prevention is as follows:

    Administer dewormer to pup-

pies at two, four, six, and eight

    weeks of age, followed by

    administration of a monthly

    preventive. Administer bi-

    weekly dewormer treatment to

    kittens between three and nine

    weeks of age, followed by

    administration of a monthly

    preventive. Administer year-

    round treatment with a heart-

    worm preventive that has

    broad-spectrum activity against

    intestinal parasites. If your pet

    was positive for worms,

    rechecking the feces is impor-

tant to make sure all worms

    have been eliminated.

    This is not a complete

    list of intestinal parasites and

is not meant to scare you into

fearing your pet, but to vali-

    date the importance of regu-

    lar fecal exams and year-

    round total parasite preven-

    tion. To prevent or control

    intestinal parasites, consult

    your local veterinarian. For

    more information on guide-

    lines, visit www.petsandpara

    sites.org.

    Parents of yesteryear sel-

    dom had to worry about

    protecting their kids

    from strangers once their kids

    were safely inside the home.

But since the dawn of the

    Internet, parents know the

    safety of their private residence

    can be easily compromised. Be

    it through social media, chat

    rooms or other online outlets,

    strangers can now gain access

to children in a variety of ways,

    many of which are seemingly

    innocent.

    The prevalence of online

    predators has many parents

    looking for ways to protect

    their kids when they go

    online. Some parents may

    want to outlaw the Internet

    altogether until kids reach

high school, but such a reac-

tion can put kids at a signifi-

    cant disadvantage academi-

    cally by barring them from

    what is often a valuable

    resource. Parents who want

their kids to get the most out

    of the Internet without put-

ting them in danger of online

    predators can employ the fol-

    lowing tips.

    Warn kids about the potential

    risks and dangers of the

    Internet. Many parents would

prefer their kids did not know

    about Internet predators, but

    that wish should not outweigh

the desire to keep kids safe.

Teach kids that people on the

    Internet may not always

    behave honestly, misrepresent-

ing themselves in an effort to

    gain access to unsuspecting and

    often trusting kids. Teach kids

to take the same approach with

    online strangers that they do

with strangers they see in pub-

    lic, never sharing any personal

    information or engaging in

    conversation with someone

they dont know. Teach kids to

tell an adult they trust immedi-

ately if an online stranger con-

    tacts them.

Use the filters at your dispos-

    al. Parents can filter certain

    Web sites so children cannot

    access them. Filter sites geared

toward adults as well as any

sites where kids might be at risk

    of coming into contact with

    potential predators. Block chat

    rooms and other sites where

adults can pose as kids and

    make sure kids who are

    involved with social media

    have made their online profiles

    private and only accessible to

    friends and family members.

    Monitor kids online activity

on a daily basis. The Internet is

    such a commonly used tool

that many kids go online at

    least once per day. Homework

    assignments and other school

    functions are commonly posted

    online, and many kids commu-

    nicate with friends via the

Internet as much as they do in

    person. Parents should monitor

their kids online activity on a

    daily basis; scanning their Web

    history and examining their

    social media interactions to be

    sure kids arent putting them-

selves in harms way. Kids may

    grow more resistant to such

    monitoring as they grow older,

but parents cannot turn a blind

eye to kids online activity sim-

    ply to avoid a confrontation.

Keep the computer in a com-

    mon area. The family comput-

er should be kept in a com-

    mon area where parents can

    monitor how much time kids

    are spending online, what

ly an effective way at keeping

    deer at bay. Bottled coyote

    urine can be quite effective,

    although human urine may

    work as well. Reapplying the

    product weekly around the

    plants is a good idea.

    REPEL THE DEER

    There are many organic or

    chemically-based products on

the market that deer may find

offensive to the taste or smell.

    Hot pepper, sulfur and

eggs or even the use of soapy

    water have been successful in

    certain instances. The use of

    blood meal or even human

    hair around the garden may

repel the deer and keep them

    on a different foraging path.

    However, remember that any

deer that is very hungry may

    ignore unpleasant tastes or

    smells for a quick bite.

    CHANGE PLANTS

    If other food sources are

    available, there are some

    species of plants and trees

    that deer will avoid. Filling

    your garden with these plants

    can help you maintain a

    beautiful, albeit untasty,

    environment for deer.

    When planting annuals,

    select among:

    Alyssum, Begonias,

    Calendula, Celosia,

    Dianthus, Foxglove,

    Geraniums, Parsley, Poppy,

    Snapdragons

    In terms of perennials,

    plant these items once, and

    deer could stay away:

    Ageratum, Anemone,

    Astibe, Bearded iris,

    Catmint, Honeysuckle,

    Lantana, Monkshood, Rock

    rose, Rosemary, Soapwort,

    Wisteria

    Plant these herbs alongside

    flowers for more protection:

    Chives, Eucalyptus, Garlic,

    Mint, Thyme, Wintergreen

    Gardeners who use a

    combination of methods to

keep deer out of their yards

    and gardens may have a

    higher success rate at deter-

    ring these animals.

    Rediscover the joy that

    comes from cooking

    with fresh herbs grown

    right from your own kitchen!

    Rather than using factory bot-

tle herbs that are dried and

    lack freshness, take matters

into your own hands and taste

    the difference. GroRite

    Garden Center in Lincoln

Park has the tools you need to

get started. And it all starts

    with hydroponics!

    Hydroponic growing is

    the most convenient and effi-

    cient way of turning your

    kitchen into an herb garden.

    Hydroponic units may be fed

    by both natural sunlight, as

    well as proprietary LED light-

    ing spectrums. This use of

    light yields nutritionally supe-

    rior products, full of living

    enzymes, vitamins and miner-

    als that

    are considered

    super foods. The flexi-

    bility of light sources enables

    units to produce year-round,

    yielding 30-40 times the pro-

    duce of traditional methods.

    Additionally, they only use 10

    percent of the water required

    by traditional farming.

    Hydroponic units also help to

    keep plants safe and secure.

They eliminate the use of pes-

    ticides, keeping produce free

    from any toxic residues.

    Because of its secure nature,

    hydroponic growing also min-

    imizes the risk of pathogens

    and bacteria

    that can cause

    rotting and

    decay, eradicat-

    ing crop failure

    due to insects or

    weather.

    G r o R i t e

    Garden Center

    offers several

    varieties of hy-

    droponic units

    under the Edible Garden

    brand, including basil, dill,

    parsley, oregano, chives,

    cilantro, rosemary, sage, mint

    and thyme. Edible Garden

    provides both retailers and

    consumers with fresher,

    longer-lasting products of

    superior quality. For more

    The kitchen is ar-guably

    the most-used room in

    the house during wak-

    ing hours. Having a kitchen

that is laid out in an efficient

    manner can improve produc-

    tivity and make for a

    more enjoyable experience.

    Designers often stress having

    an effective work triangle in

    the kitchen. The phrase

    kitchen work triangle started

    with the Building Research

    Council (formerly the Small

    Homes Council) at the

    University of Illinois. The idea

    came from studies of space

usage and the search for effi-

    cient kitchen designs. What

    the triangle essentially means

    is positioning three key items

    of the kitchen for efficiency.

    The stove, sink and refrigera-

    tor represent the three main

    points of the triangle. Having

    these items spaced accordingly

    can make work easier. Having

    them too close together can

    create a cramped, ineffective

    room. The placement of the

    triangle points alone does not

    make a successful layout.

    According to the University of

    Missouri Extension, the trian-

gle space should also be mea-

    suredaccordingly. Put 4 to 7

    feet between the refrigerator

and sink, 4 to 6 feet between

the sink and stove and 4 to 9

    feet between the stove and

    refrigerator, with the ideal size

    resulting in a work triangle

    where the three sides total

    between 15 and 22 feet.

    Soup-only sustenance,

    detoxifying smoothies

    and fat-burning super-

foods are just a few of the

    many ways people have

    attempted to lose weight in

    recent years. Although many

diets can help a person shed

    unwanted pounds or get

    healthier, many more fail to

    address the problems

    boomerang dieters often face:

    the fundamental lifestyle

    choices that lead to weight

    gain in the first place.

    A common problem for

dieters is the inability to keep

    weight off once they have

    lost it. Registered dieticians

    Julie Upton and Katherina

    Brooking, authors of the

book, The Real Skinny:Appetite for Healths 101 Fat

    Habits & Slim Solutions

    (Tarcher/Penguin),

find that there is apattern to the

    weight gain yo-yo.

    That pattern, the

    authors suggest,

    often involves un-

    healthy fat habits

    that are a common

    component of diet-

    ing woes. Once

    these poor lifestyle

    choices are recognized and

replaced with slim solutions, weight loss and a healthy rela-

    tionship with food is much

    more attainable.

    Upton, a representative

    of the American Dietetic

    Assoc-iation and frequent

    contributor to national news

    programs, and Brooking, who

has a masters degree in nutri-

    tion science from Columbia

    University, combine their

experience and expertise onthe subject of food and also

    include data collected from

    numerous nutritionists and

    dieticians in their book.

    Instead of touting quick-

    fixes, gimmicks and the latest

    trendy food, the authors pres-

    ent a weight-loss guide that

    offers real solutions for real

life. Examples of some of the

    strategies offered in the book

    part. Keeping the weight off

    is the real challenge. Aiming

    Exercise is essential. Few

    people can keep weight in

you feel sated and less likely to

    overeat. Upton and Brooking

    houses that are under 200

    calories per serving.

    1. Almonds: One ounce pro-

vides 170 calories and 6grams of protein.

    Peanut butter on whole-grain

    bread is tasty and portable

    and offers heart-healthy fat.

    3. Parmesan popcorn:

    Sprinkle low-fat microwave

    popcorn with 2 tablespoons

    of grated parmesan cheese to

add protein and calcium tothe snack.

    4. Pistachios: One ounce of

pistachios is equal to 49 nuts.

    Thats an impressive snack at

    While the Decla-

    ration of Indepen-

    dence states that

we have the right to life, lib-

erty and the pursuit of happi-

    ness, sometimes lives are lost,

    liberties are denied and happi-

ness is ruined by people and

    companies who behave badly.

At times that bad behavior is

    intentional, but very often it

is the result of negligence.Negligence sometimes

    includes those situations

    where a person knows or

    should know their actions

pose a risk to others but con-

    sciously disregards that risk

    and engages in risky behavior.

    Many times negligence

    includes that situation where

    a licensed professional fails to

live up to the minimum stan-

    dards of performance and the

duty owed a client or a patient

    he or she is serving.

    Negligence sometimes in-

    volves something as everyday

and mundane as the failure to

    remove ice from ones side-

walk in a timely manner. Itcan include something as dra-

matic as an airline pilot, a

    ships captain, a train engineer

or a bus driver taking the con-

    trols while drunk or falling

    asleep while in control.

    Another example of negli-

    gence is when a pharmaceuti-

cal company sells a drug that

    does not meet FDA standards,

    and the person taking the

    drug is harmed.

    What is important to

know is often times people are

    not hurt by negligent behav-

    ior but not always
