Have you noticed it is get-ting harder to do business

today? Maybe it’s because

large companies are squashing

those who were once the backbone

of the community. We believe that

collaboration of these backbone-

type businesses is the key to success

moving forward.

24-7 Networking Sales is a

financially driven networking

group. Each of my clients, as long

as he or she is legally allowed to,pays a commission on completed

sales after getting paid. Why not

reward people who bring you

business?

I was always the person at the

networking events whom peoplecould depend on to get new busi-

ness from. Usually, I would give

two to five leads at the monthly

functions. (Notice I did not say,

“And then I would collect all of

the sales leads people were recipro-

cating.)

In 2002, I transitioned from

the paint industry and everyone

came running, wanting even more.

We formalized into a company to

generate sales leads and pay com-missions. Now, 11 years later, it is

continuing to grow.

B&L Printing’s Gerry Harris

has been a member since 2005. He

continues to generate sales leads, as

well as receive them. He is a realnetworker. His goal is to pay

$30,000 in commissions in one

not to be in 24-7.”

Our slogan is: “We are look-

ing for real networkers. We are

going to challenge you to prove it

and we have the cash to back up

that challenge.”

We would like to cordially

invite you to a vision casting night

held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from9-11am at True Vine Christian

According to the lat-

est research, med-

ical breakthroughs,

better living habits and being

married are the key factors to

longevity in the U.S. This

means that you might spendmore time living as a retiree

than you did before you

retired. If you worked from

age 20 to retirement at 65,

you might still live another

45 years to 110. (The new

life insurance mortality

tables extend to age 121!)

The problem during

your working years is

whether or not you will

invest and save enough capi-tal so that your money can

last for a full 45 years after

retirement. You want your

money to keep you in the

lifestyle you created for you

and your spouse before retir-

ing. It makes you pause for a

moment to ponder the possi-

bility that you might be the

one to live beyond age 100.

You certainly won’t be alone.

The centenarian club (peo-ple over age 100) is growing

geometrically across the

globe as never before imag-

ined. In fact, there is a new

club formed as a result of this

phenomenon called the

supercentenarian club, com-

prised of people aged 110 or

more!

According to the

Gerontology Research Group

(GRG), there have beenover 500 verified American

“supercentenarians” — 21

are verified and currently liv-

ing. There are 20 Americans

listed as “pending” and 16 as

“unverified.” The oldest liv-

ing verified supercentenarian

from the U.S. is Jeralean

Talley, aged 114. The oldest

person ever from the U.S.

was Sarah Knauss, who died

in 1999 at the ripe old age of

119 years, 97 days. Do you

have enough money to live

that long?

It’s safe to assume that

the overwhelming majority

of these “old folks” have

already far outlived their

money. They must be finan-

cially dependent on others,

including state and federal

governments, their children

and grandchildren, and char-

itable organizations. Quality

of life diminishes quickly

without disposable discre-

tionary funds. If there were a

Recently I had the pleas-

ure to speak to a large

group of 40 active sen-

iors at Cedar Crest in

Riverdale about dentistry.

Sponsored by “Discuss”

(Philips, Sonicare), the pro-

gram included a raffle of vari-

ous new dental products,

including air flossers, FlexCare

Platinum toothbrushes, tonguescrapers and BreathRx bottles.

I reviewed many of the

topics I’ve written about in

“Life and Leisure,” including

dental implants, gum disease,

oral hygiene (and the newest,

easiest tools to use at home, dry

mouth, teeth whitening, den-

tal materials and the recent

research on the effects of oral

health).

Everyone was inquisitiveand showed great interest.

Here are some of the best

questions asked, and my

answers:

 Are dental mini-implants as

 good as standard implants?

In my office and my expe-rience in placing implants

since 1998, each has its func-

tion. I offer regular, standard

dental implants as the first and

best option to replace missing

teeth, providing many

anatomical, medical and indi-

vidual needs are met. Mini-

implants are used when inade-

quate jaw bone is available

and they are recommended

only under certain circum-stances.

 Are over-the-counter fluoride

rinses useful?

Yes. As long as they are

ADA approved and used as

instructed to reduce your

chances of tooth decay. Are white fillings as good as

silver fillings?

Silver fillings are metal

and therefore stronger than

the white composite resin

ones. Depending on each per-

son’s needs, cosmetic fillings

wear down more quickly and

weaken as the size increases.

However, they give you a great

smile, do not contain mercury

and have improved greatlyover the years.

Does whitening your teeth

damage them?

Overuse of whitening

products — prescription or

over the counter — by anyone

at any age will dehydrate your

teeth. It can weaken the tooth

structure or have adverse

effects on the nerve and sensi-

tivity of your teeth. Use as

directed! Where does bad breath come

 from?

Most causes of breath

malodor come from the

mouth. You must brush and

floss your teeth at least twice a

day, rinse with an antibacterial

mouth rinse, brush or scrape

the surface of your tongue, andsee your dentist for regular

checkups and cleanings at

least twice a year.

Be sure to watch for the

announcement of my next

presentation at Cedar Crest in

2014. It is open to the public

and free! I am also available

for group presentations. Please

contact my office at 973- 838-

5862, visit brusco.care.com or

This summer, the

Performing Arts

Academy (PAA) in

Pompton Lakes participated

in the week-long U.S.

Tournament of Dance in

Atlantic City. Alexa Lobosco

of Pompton Lakes, a senior at

DePaul Catholic High

School, took home the covet-

ed title of “Miss Dance of the

United States,” along with a

$10,000 scholarship. Lobosco,

a PAA student since age two,

plans to raise funds for juve-

nile diabetes research.

Amanda Egan and Suzie

Fischbach were awarded first

and second runners-up,

respectively.

Several other PAA stu-

dents took away national

titles, including Delaney

DeStefano (Petite Miss

Acrobat), Jolie Schaub

(Junior Miss Acrobat),

Samantha Murphy (Teen Miss

Acrobat), Jillian Schear

(Junior Miss Dance), Mario

Rizzi (Junior Mr. Dance),

 Jolie Schaub (International

Princess of Dance) and Alexis

Garcia (International Queen

of Dance).

PAA won the 11- and

12-year-old division of the tap

championships and had a

clean sweep at the acrobatic

championships, winning the 8

and under division, the 9- and

10-year-old division, the 11-

and 12-year-old division and

the 13 and over division.

During the competition, tal-

ent scouts observed and

selected 26 PAA students to

become members of the U.S.

Dance and Acrobatic Team,

which provides young

dancers the opportunity to

perform at Madison Square

Garden, the Prudential

Center, Hershey Park, Walt

Disney World, Radio City

Music Hall, and many other

prominent venues.

PAA also had the honor

of receiving the prestig-

ious “Diamond Award” and

“Emerald Award,” given to

the highest scoring routines of

the week. To culminate an

amazing week, PAA was also

chosen as the “Top Studio”

winner!

Additional awards and

scholarships were presented to

PAA students throughout the

week, and PAA teachers and

choreographers were acknowl-

edged for their hard work and

tremendous talent. Chore-

ography awards were present-

ed to K.C. Castellano,

Meghan Frayne, Dawn

Laviola-Schaub, Chris Lee

and Katy Spreadbury.

Under the artistic direc-

tion of Dawn Laviola-Schaub,

PAA enters its 23rd year of

exceptional dance instruction

this fall. We are extremely

proud of our students and

At B Fit Studio in

Pompton Plains, we

host pole parties that

bring in bachelorettes, birth-

day girls and parties just for

fun. But two weeks ago, we

were booked to host a different

kind of party. A woman named

Trudy called to book a party to

celebrate life.

Trudy told an inspira-

tional and heartbreaking story.

She is a single mom struggling

to raise a 17-year-old boy. In

February, she rushed to the

hospital expecting the doctors

to tell her she had kidney

stones. She soon found out

that she was fighting a mass in

her ovary, which soon led to a

full hysterectomy on April 3.

During her blood tests,

Trudy was also told that she

had a lump in her breast. On

April 23, she had a bone biop-

sy surgery, which found abnor-

mal bone formation. About

three weeks later, she was hav-

ing a double mastectomy with

radiation and chemotherapy.

Today, Trudy is back at

Chilton Hospital to start more

chemotherapy and a new drug

with a long list of side effects.

Trudy told us she wanted

a pole party while she was get-

ting ready to undergo her

upcoming and grueling round

of drug therapy. I contacted

the B Fit instructors, who all

decided to donate their time.

There would be pole dancing,

chair dancing, strip teasing

and Zumba! Together we

planned a spectacular party

for September 21 in order to

celebrate life.

September 21 came and

the party was a hit. Trudy, her

friends and the instructors all

had a blast. Most of all, it was

refreshing and enlightening.

We stood in awe of the bright-

ness of Trudy’s smile the

whole time.

Trudy’s story may be simi-

lar to other breast cancer sto-

ries around the globe. Yet I was

completely in awe when I met

her. She does not feel she is a

victim, and she’s not asking for

charity or sympathy. She is the

strongest and most beautiful

woman I’ve ever met, and she

is inspiring her friends, family

and strangers every day. Trudy

wears a dress to all of her treat-

ments and her doctors refer to

her as a rock star.

Above all, Trudy is

incredibly brave. She is fight-

ing one of the biggest battles of

her life with a wide smile on

her face. If you ever bump into

her and get a chance to chat,

you’ll immediately see that she

inspires you to be the best ver-

sion of yourself. When with

her, you truly believe that

beauty is always within, and

that every single day of your

life is the best day of your life

— simply because you’re alive.

It was an honor for us at B

Fit Studio to host this incredi-

ble event for Trudy and her

friends. We hope that through

our pole party we were able to

bring awareness to her cause

and, more importantly, to pro-

vide support and encourage-

ment for Trudy. But frankly, I

believe that she was more of an

encouragement to us than we

could ever be to her.

Trudy and her cause, give us a

Choosing a pet isn’t

about choosing the

breed that is the “in”

pet of the moment. Instead,

the right pet should be a com-

panion who will be comfort-

able in your household and

amenable to your lifestyle.

While there are plenty of

people who envision romps in

the park with their pooches

or an active game of fetch,

some people would prefer a

dog that is happier lounging

on the sofa.

While some dogs may be

boisterous animals full of

unending stores of energy,

there are plenty of placid

breeds that fit better in a laid-

back environment. Dogs with

low energy still exercise, but

this exercise may mean a short

walk or some time spent play-

ing indoors.

Here are some breeds

that require less daily energy

expenditure and may be happy

spending most of their time

lounging around.

Basset Hound: Placid and

slow-moving, Basset Hounds

are direct descendants of

Bloodhounds. They were

raised to hunt various game,

but they can be good with

children and other animals.

Their stubbornness can make

them difficult to train.

However, they are food-moti-

vated, and this could be their

inspiration to learn.

Bulldog: The English

Bulldog is a medium-sized,

compact dog with a pushed-in

face full of skin folds. It is one

of the gentlest dogs and is gen-

erally well behaved with chil-

dren and other household

pets. Because of their short

muzzles, they may have

breathing problems and intol-

erance to extreme tempera-

tures.

Bullmastiff: Said to be a

cross between the Mastiff and

the Bulldog, a Bullmastiff is an

excellent choice for a guard

dog. Bullmastiffs crave human

attention and like to be

indoors.

Clumber Spaniel: One of

the least known members of

the Spaniel group, this heavy-

boned pooch will romp outside

but is generally inactive

indoors. Keep in mind that

they tend to shed and drool.

Great Dane: This breed is

known for its giant size and

gentle personality. Danes take

to training well and are fairly

low-maintenance. They need

less exercise than their size

might indicate. One

thing to note is that

their large size con-

tributes to their short-

er life expectancy.

Great Pyrenees:

A large, white dog

that has a reputation

of being calm and

patient. A Pyrenees

may be low energy, but it

needs daily grooming atten-

tion to keep fur from matting.

Italian Greyhound: Al-

though they are known as rac-

ing dogs, Greyhounds do not

need constant exercise to

remain happy. Daily, moderate

walks will be effective, and

these dogs prefer a quiet

household.

Irish Wolfhound: Known

for their height, Irish

Wolfhounds are tall as well as

rugged and heroic. Though

powerful, Irish Wolfhounds

have a docile temperament

and are family-friendly.

Pug: This little, stocky

dog rarely seems to be in a bad

mood. They love to follow

their owners around and crave

attention. Because of their

short snouts, Pugs also may

have breathing issues and tend

to snore. Owners must make

efforts to keep them cool in

the summer.

Krupnick, the owner of the Pe-

quannock Animal Hospital. He

Raking leaves is a fact of

life for many home-

owners. Cool autumn

weather and less sunlight are

signals to certain trees that it

is time to shed their leaves. A

leafless tree is more capable of

conserving energy and riding

out the winter successfully.

Trees also shed their leaves

during periods of drought or if

they have produced too many

leaves in the summer and

need to conserve water.

For homeowners, fallen

leaves can be an unsightly

nuisance that can stain con-

crete and smother lawns, espe-

cially when fallen leaves

are not promptly removed.

Raking is a timely task many

homeowners dread. But it is

possible to cut down on the

time it takes to clear a yard of

all those unsightly leaves.

Wait for the majority

of leaves to drop before

beginning your work. If you

start too early in the season,

you may end up raking multi-

ple times and that is not

time-efficient.

Use the technology at

your disposal. If the grass is

still growing, you can use a

mulching mower to take care

of some of the leaves. The

mower will shred the leaves

and create nutrients for the

soil and the lawn. However,

once the lawn stops growing

you do not want to cut it too

short. This is when it is time

to take out the rake.

A composting vacuum

and leaf blower are other

ways to make quick work of

cleaning up leaves. Although

these devices may not be as

eco-friendly as a rake, they

can significantly reduce the

time it takes to clear a yard of

fallen leaves.

Remember to rake

downwind. It is a good idea

to save raking for a day when

it is not too breezy; other-

wise, you may end up raking

the same spots over and over.

Handle small spots at one

time and rake the leaves into

small piles. Then you can

easily transfer the leaves to a

tarp or bag and set aside for

disposal or deposit them into

your compost heap.

Invest in a lightweight

leaf rake and a good pair of

gloves. Being comfortable

while doing the work will

make it go more smoothly

and quickly, and a light-

weight rake won’t be too tax-

ing, while gloves will prevent

the formation of blisters. In

addition, take breaks to rest

and recharge.

Move your feet as you

rake so your arms and back

are not doing all of the work.

Think of it as dragging the

leaves more so than just shuf-

fling them around. The more

leaves you can gather in one

pass of the rake, the more

quickly the job will go.

Spread the work around.

Sharing the task with others

certainly cuts down on the

time it takes to clear the

yard. Have a leaf-raking

party in which members of

the household each pitch in

before everyone enjoys a

well-deserved backyard bar-

becue.

Although raking leaves

may not be the average home-

owner’s favorite activity, it is a

healthy one. Various muscles

are worked when raking,

which also is a good form of

cardiovascular exercise. In

fact, a person who weighs 180

pounds can expect to burn

more than 350 calories raking

leaves for an hour.

Turn all burners to high andpreheat grill to 400-600*F.

Reduce temperature to medi-

um/medium-high to main-

tain a temperature around

450*F.

Using a well-floured

pizza peel, slide the uncooked

pizza onto the pizza stone.

Check the pizza fre-quently -- depending on

thickness of crust, this will

take between 8 and 20 min-

utes.

Pizza is ready when

cheese has melted and bot-

The elderly are atrisk for depression

and are under-

served by the mental health

profession. Many are resistant

to treatment because they

equate depression with weak-

ness or death. Here are some

coping strategies for you and

your loved ones.

1. Recognize that depressionis an illness. Family members

should be aware of the disabil-

ity that depression can cause

and should avoid making

depressed parents or relatives

feel guilty by telling them to

get out more or pull them-

selves up by the bootstraps.

Depression is an illness and

can become quite debilitating

if left untreated.

2. Don’t dismiss symptoms. If

your loved one is not eating

for more than a few days or

loses interest in activities they

used to love for more than twoweeks, these could be signs of

depression. Unexplained cry-

ing, sadness that lasts for

extended periods and social

withdrawal are other signs.

3. Talk about how they feel.

Instead of plunging directly

into a tough discussion about

treatment, try asking what’s

going on. Say: “I’ve noticed

you haven’t been sleeping

Avenues in the heart of

downtown Pompton Lakes,

 Jimmy the Shoe Doctor has

been helping customers fromnear and far with their shoe

repairs and orthopedic needs.

This year the family-owned

ings include many popular

lines of work pants, carpenter

jeans, vests, thermals and out-

erwear like coveralls and biboveralls.

“From the beginning we

have been known for our

repair services — especiallyorthopedic repairs,” said

owner Jimmy Aziz.

True to its name, the

store still doctors up cus-

tomers’ broken shoes. It also

sells several products for foot

health, including heel cups,

insoles and night splints.

People suffering from diabetes

and arthritis can find various

types of circulation and com-

pression socks and stockings.Over the past 25 years,

customers have come to trust

The New College in

Oxford England wasfounded in 1379.

One of the school’s promi-

nent features is the great din-

ing hall, the roof of which is

supported with huge wooden

beams 45 feet in length.

About a century ago, it wasdiscovered that insect dam-

age had all but destroyed

these massive timbers.

 Naturally, the adminis-

tration was alarmed, not just

at the state of the building but

at the prospect of findingreplacements. Beams that size

had become extraordinarily

rare throughout Europe.

The college owned sever-

al tracts of land and on the

chance that there might be

some trees large enough toserve the need they called in

the groundskeeper. They were

amazed to learn what the

groundskeeper told them:

Mark E. Charnet, CAS, CSA,

is president and founder of

 American Prosperity Group.

 APG is the premier retirement

and estate-planning franchise in

the U.S. with 17 offices in eight

states. Charnet has 32 years of

...AND MORE!

When the school was founded

hundreds of years before, a

grove of oaks had been plant-

ed for the sole purpose of

replacing the roof beams.

Across the years, each care-taker had, in turn, been care-

fully instructed never to allow

the trees in the grove to be cut

for any other purpose.

Problem solved!

This is a beautiful story

about the power of forward

thinking and the need to use

resources wisely. But it alsobegs the questions: What will

sprout from the seeds we plant

today? How will the result

serve when we are dust and

long forgotten?

will not instantly put the elder

4. Allow them to remain

independent. Do not take

over doing tasks for them that

they can do for themselves.

Doing things for a depressed

person only reinforces their

perception that they are

worthless and incapable.

5. Seek professional help. If

they are resistant to help, tell

their doctor your concerns and

behaviors you’ve noticed.Older people are sometimes less

resistant and more willing to

listen to a doctor.

6. Be involved in the treat-

ment. Get your relative to go

on outings with you or go back

to an activity that he or she

once enjoyed. Encourage them

to be active and busy, but not to

take on too much at one time.
