It is often during times of

    extreme devastation when

    children first see how commu-

nities can join together to help one

another. Such efforts may be a

childs initial exposure to charitywhile highlighting the impor-

    tance of putting another per-

    sons needs before your own.

    But children need not

    be exposed charity solely dur-

    ing times of tragedy. Teaching

children to be charitable is one

of the ways to help them

    become good citizens of the

    world. By helping others, parents

can instill early on lessons of

kindness, empathy and compas-sion into their sons and daughters.

Children who are ready and will-

ing to lend a helping hand may

grow up to be more appreciative of

what they have in their own lives.

Whats more, they may learn to be

selfless while assigning less value to

    material things.

    Youngsters who repeatedly

see their own parents and other

role models doing good and lend-ing a helping hand may be more

    inclined to

    repeat that behavior, and giving

will be the norm for them rather

    than the exception.

    To mold charitable children,

    families can employ the following

    techniques.Start locally. There are people

    right in your own communi-

ty or on the street where you

live who can benefit from a

    helping hand. Ask an elder-

ly neighbor if he or she

    needs assistance with shop-

    ping for groceries or could

    benefit from your child taking

in the garbage cans after pickup.

    Children can help shovel snow

from sidewalks or do other age-appropriate tasks, such as place a

    carelessly strewn newspaper closer

    to a neighbors door.

    Volunteer as a family. The

entire family can get together and

spend time working at a communi-

    ty-sponsored carnival or cleaning

    debris from an area beach.

Volunteer work may be available at

    your childs school, where families

can plant gardens around the prop-erty. When volunteering as a fami-

ly, not only is your entire family

helping to do good, but youre

    spending quality time together as

    well.

    Make charitable donations.

    Let children see the solicitations

    for monetary donations that come

in the mail. Read aloud the pleas

for funds to help children and

adults who may not have enough

to eat or who may require medicalcare. This is an important lesson in

    humility and helps show children

that not every person in the world

    is comfortable. Once kids have

Im 21, out of college andcant find a job. What do I

Im 31, just got laid off,

and two kids. What do I do

    now?

    Im 41, recently got down-

    sized, have a bigger refinanced

mortgage, a spouse, two kidsnearing college and my unem-

    ployment checks have stopped.

    What do I do now?

    Im 51, the company I

work for was just sold, people

are being let go, I believe I

may be next to get fired and

    Im not prepared to retire.

What do I do now?Im 61, my industry is

    being phased out by technolog-

ical advances, Im too young for

    Medicare, too young to receive

my pension and too old to find

another job. What do I do

    now?

    Im 71, retired, with no

weekly paycheck, negative per-formance in my portfolio on

    top of my withdrawal needs

    will deplete my funds sooner

than later. My parents and in-

laws are already gone so there is

    no inheritance to look forward

to. Must I look to my children

for financial support if my funds

are depleted or is there anothersolution?

Im 81, its harder for me

to do the grocery shopping and

clean the house. My spouse is

    getting more and more forget-

ful every day. We dont have

    any long-term care insurance

policies. What do I do now?

    Or

Im 21, out of college and

cant find a job. Its a good

thing that my father told me toput away 10 percent of my

    earnings from each and every

    paycheck Ive ever earned from

my part-time jobs as a teenager.

Im 31, just got laid off,

have a big mortgage, a spouse

and two kids. Utilizing the cash

    value from my life insurance

    policy and my mutual funds

that I have been funding for

ten years now, there is plenty of

money at my disposal until Ican find the perfect job again.

    Im 41, recently got down-

    sized, have a bigger refinanced

    mortgage, a spouse and two

    kids nearing college, and my

    unemployment checks have

stopped. Its a good thing that I

can borrow against my 401k,my life insurance cash values

and my mutual funds to keep

    everything afloat.

    Im 51, the company I

work for was just sold, people

    Boston Louis Jewelers in

    Pequannock is gearing

up for a trunk show on

    November 30 from 26pm.

The show will feature the beau-

    tiful Nomination jewelry line.

A few years back,Nomination steel bracelets

with charm links were all the

rage. What most of the fans of

    these bracelets didnt know was

    that Nomination also designs

    stunning high-quality silver

    fashion jewelry. All the pieces

    are crafted in Italy, renowned

for some of the best-made jew-elry in the world, and most are

    in the very affordable

    $100$300 range.

    There are many unique

    design suites in the

    Nomination line. The

    Romantica suite consists of

    beautiful modern-styled neck-

    laces, bracelets and earrings in

    filigree heart shapes that are

    accented with 18K rose gold

    overlay details. The Sorrento

    suite features cut-though geo-

metric circles with sun, cloudor heart shapes. The Sofia suite

    uses perfectly cut pastel-colored

    semi-precious gems, such as

    lavender and green amethyst,

    light blue topaz, smoky quartz,

    citrine, and green/gold quartz

    complimented by brilliant

    white cubic zirconias. All are

    gorgeous, plated with tarnish

    resistant rhodium that also

    gives it a brilliant platinum

look. They are pretty enough tobe worn with formal attire but

    are designed for everyday.

    The wonderful thing

    about this Nomination line is

    that with many matching ear-

    ring, pendant and bracelet sets

available, you can add to your

    jewelry wardrobe with each

    special occasion. Any piece in

    At the 2012 Olympics,

    74 men from 61

    countries competed

in the 100 meter dash. Usain

    Bolt left his competition in

the dust, setting a new world

    record. But 20 runners were

    within a half-second of his

    qualifying time and 50 run-

    ners were within one second.

    No matter how good you

think you may be at what you

do, there is a lot of competi-

    tion out there.

    If we focus our energies

    on beating others, even when

    we are successful, the question

    remains for how long? First

place is a fickle and unsustain-

    able perch. No matter how

    powerful something may

    seem, the relentless onslaught

of time has a way of eroding

    the most formidable champi-

on because they are alone and

exposed. Everyone is aimingto knock them off their podi-

um. Thats what happens in a

    world fueled by competition;

    everyone else is a potential

    enemy.

Instead, my goal is to be

    the best at finding common

    pathways of success for others

around me. We all have the

    opportunity to journey alone

    or together. By sharing the

    win, we find instead that

    everyone else is a potential

ally. It doesnt dilute your suc-

    cess it multiplies it.

    home-office rules. Many self-

    employed taxpayers declined to

    claim the home-office deduc-

tion because it was so compli-

    cated to compute. For 2013,

    the deduction is streamlined,

allowing for a deduction of $5

per square foot, up to a maxi-

mum of 300 square feet or

    $1,500.

    Create a retirement plan. Its

not too late to create a retire-

ment plan for yourself and your

    employees if you have them.

The plans can be simple to set

up and administer, such as a

    Simplified Employee Pension

    (SEP) plan. A 401(k) plan

could be established even for a

    one-person business. While

some of these plans must be

established by the end of the

year, most can be funded up to

the extended due date of the

    tax return.

    Purchase business equipment.

    Up to $500,000 (scheduled to

    be reduced significantly to

    $25,000 in 2014) in business

    equipment purchases can be

    expensed this year, rather than

    being expensed over a number

    of years. Additionally, there is

also a 50 percent bonus depre-

    ciation allowance (that will not

be available in 2014) if your

    purchases exceed the $500,000

limit. This might be the last

    year to maximize your equip-

    ment purchase deductions to

    such an extent.

    Deduct health insurance. If

    you are self-employed, you are

allowed to claim 100% of the

    amount paid for health insur-

    ance for yourself, your spouse

and your dependents as long as

    you follow certain conditions.

    Consider credit card purchas-

es. If you want to purchase

    equipment or supplies for your

business before the end of the

    year, but you are cash-strapped,

    consider using your credit card.

    Your deduction occurs this year

when the purchase is made, not

dependence on a job will be

    gone forever!

    Im 61, my industry is

    being phased out by technolog-

ical advances, Im too young for

    Medicare, too young to receive

my pension and too old to find

    another job. After analyzing

    my portfolio, Ive determined I

    can actually retire comfortably

for the rest of my life without

the constraints of a job. My

spouse and I both are guaran-

teed an income that will never

    diminish or cease, thanks to

    our financial advisors advice

that we listened to and prac-

ticed for the last 40 years!

    Im 71, retired, with no

    weekly paycheck and negative

    performance in my portfolio

    on top of my withdrawal

    needs will deplete my funds

    sooner than later. My parents

and in-laws are already gone so

there is no inheritance to look

    forward to. With my retirement

    portfolio properly set up and

    protected utilizing the Trinity

    Method of Investing, our joint

    retirement income needs are

guaranteed to last until we are

both gone, even if stock and

    bond markets sour and our

portfolio dies before we do. Our

financial advisor told us of the

    benefits derived from investing

    through an insurance company

    with income enhancements

    and guarantees. We immedi-

    ately seized the opportunity

    and consider that decision the

    best financial move of our

    lives!

Im 81, its harder for me

to do the grocery shopping and

clean the house. My spouse is

    getting more and more forget-

ful every day. As part of the

    Trinity Method of Investing

    our advisor told us about,

    whether we need assistance in

the home or the help of a nurs-

ing home, we will not be finan-

    cially devastated. In fact, our

    joint income will increase

because of the need and a sepa-

    rate insurance policy will pay

for our care. Not only will our

    portfolio be protected, our

    annual income increased and

the expense of care provided by

    insurance, our advisor also

    included a bequest magnifier.

    Not only will our children

receive 100 percent of the bal-

ance of our portfolio, they will

also receive it net of taxes as

the advisor provided for a plan

to take care of that obligation

too! We were also able to

    enhance the bequest to our

    children and favorite charities

    Home health care is a

    preferred way of care

    for those who wish to

    receive quality individualized

    services in the comfort of

    their homes. Recipients of

    home health care include the

    elderly, those living with an

    illness and those recovering

    from an accident or surgery.

    Choosing a quality home

health care agency is not an

    easy decision. Here are some

    helpful points to consider:

1.Is the agency certified by a

    reputable Accrediting Body of

    Healthcare Organization,

    such as the Commission on

    Accreditation for Home Care,

    Inc. (CAHC), which is New

    Jerseys largest and only state-

    based home care accreditation

    program?

    2.Is the agency available 24/7

    Though it may seem like

    dogs have stomachs of

    steel, no dog is invin-

    cible. Sometimes they may be

struck with stomach upset or a

    symptom that indicates there

    is a problem.

    The American Veterinary

    Medical Association cites

canine digestive issues as one of

    the main reasons people bring

their dogs to see a vet. Dogs

    have different digestive systems

    than humans, and one notable

difference is that dogs do not

    have digestive enzymes in their

    saliva. Food does the majority

    of its breaking down within

    the canine stomach, which

    requires the stomach to pro-

duce more acid than a humans.

This extra acid is what helps

    dogs digest meats, particularly

raw ones, more readily, but it

    may cause issues when intro-

    duced to uncooked produce or

    starches.

    There are different stom-

ach ailments that may arise in

    a dog and subsequent treat-

    ment methods. Understanding

what might be going on can

    help you seek medical advice

when necessary or avoid a trip

    to the vets office.

    VOMITING: Infrequent

    vomiting is generally nothing

to get worried over. When a

dog eats something that is not

readily digested, he or she may

    regurgitate the offender quite

    quickly. Dogs who quickly eat

large amounts of food also may

find they have eaten too much

    and regurgitate the contents of

    their stomachs. Sometimes a

dog will vomit a frothy, yellow-

    colored liquid. This is usually

bile that can be irritating to the

    stomach. Smaller portions of

    food spread out throughout the

day instead of one large meal

    can help reduce vomiting.

    When vomiting is fre-

    quent and you notice any

    other problems, such as weight

loss or refusal of foods, it is best

    to consult with a veterinarian.

    The dog may have eaten

    something that is inappropri-

    ate or poisonous.

    DIARRHEA: Dogs are

    not immune to diarrhea. Just

    like humans, diarrhea is often

    a byproduct of intestinal upset

    rather than irritation in the

    stomach. Many times dogs

    may be afflicted with diarrhea

    if they have intestinal para-

sites, such as certain types of

worms. There also may be a

foreign form of bacteria in the

    body that causes irritation in

    the intestines.

    Diarrhea is often not a

    cause for concern. It may

resolve on its own or by feed-

ing the dog a bland diet with

rice to absorb extra water from

    the intestines. Frequent diar-

    rhea will need further action

and may be indicative of a

    larger problem.

    Much like people, dogs

can suffer from colitis, an irri-

    tation of the intestines. In

    such instances, a dogs stool

may appear full of mucous and

be very loose. Dogs who are

    normally house-trained may

    have trouble making it out-

doors and soil the house. Vets

    may prescribe antibiotics and a

bland diet for a week or two to

    get digestive health back on

    track.

    ULCERS: Ulcers can

    develop in dogs when their

bodies are in shock from a

    severe bacterial infection,

    blood pressure problem or

    even a heart problem. Ulcers

also may be the result of taking

    certain medications. Dogs

    with ulcers may produce vomit

with specks of old blood mixed

    in. A vet may prescribe

antacids and a bland diet for

    ulcers, much like a doctor

    would for a person.

    CANINE GASTRI-

TIS: This is a condition of

    irritation in the stomach due

to a foreign object or food

    allergy. Some instances of

canine gastritis are a result of

dogs eating garbage or grass. In

    acute cases, canine gastritis

often goes away on its own in

one to two days. If it does not,

    it may be chronic gastritis,

which results from a food aller-

    gy or by consuming hairballs

    or something that cannot be

    digested, like plastic.

A vet can do a test

    called a gastroscopy

    to narrow down gas-

    tritis diagnoses.

    BLOAT: Bloat,

    or gastric dilation-

    volvulus, is a very

    serious ailment that

    occurs when there is a

    problem with digestion.

    Something causes gases to

build up in the dogs stomach

and inflate it like a balloon.

    The stomach also may twist

    inside the body, causing the

    esophagus to wrap around

itself as well as the bottom part

of the stomach at the pyloric

    valve. This further prevents

the gas from escaping as nor-

    mal. Eventually the stomach

may grow so large it cuts off

    circulation to the heart, and

the dog may go into cardiac

    arrest.

    It is important to react

    very quickly if you suspect

    your dog has bloat. Surgery

may be needed, and even a few

    minutes can mean the differ-

    ence between life and death.

    There are many digestive

    ailments that can afflict dogs,

so its best to always consult

    with a veterinarian when you

    suspect there is a problem.

    millions of new homeowners?

If so, youve most likely felt

    pre-cut repeating pattern, so

all you need to do is simply

    unroll, apply and get painting

    to create your desired look.

    From delicate, narrow waves

    throughout a bathroom or

    nursery, to bold, wide chevron

patterns in the living area or

    bedroom, this tape can be

used in any room of the

    house.

    FABULOUS FRAMES

    When moving into a

    new space, the things you

    love should take center stage.

    Once your home reflects who

you are, the rest will slowly

    fall into place. Photo frames

are the ideal choice to add a

    decorative and personalized

touch to any room. Bring this

    common decor pick into the

modern age by creating a per-

    sonal gallery and displaying

    frames of varying shapes and

sizes. To do this, plan the lay-

out of the frames before hang-

ing, either with paper on the

wall or by arranging them on

the floor. Or, you can simply

    purchase pre-arranged frame

    galleries at home decor retail-

    ers.

    FAUCET FOCUS

    Kitchen and bath

    makeovers tend to have the

biggest impact on a home and

    its resale value. However, new

    homeowners who are strapped

for cash may not have a large

    budget for a full-scale bath-

    room remodel. Fortunately,

    there are several basic swaps

    that can quickly change the

look and feel of a bath.

    The easiest way to

    remodel your bathroom is to

    replace its hardest-working

fixture - the faucet. This is a

    project new homeowners can

    tackle themselves at a reason-

able price. Moen offers a wide

    variety of faucet options like

    the new single-handle

    Boardwalk bathroom faucet,

to add a fresh, elegant look to

    the sink. Available at Lowes,

    Boardwalk fits almost any

    decor and comes in Moens

    Spot Resist Brushed Nickel

    finish, which resists finger-

prints and water spots, so the

    faucet will stay looking clean

as you show it off to family

    and friends. For a polished

    look, swap out old hardware

    with affordable, coordinated

    accessories including robe

    hooks, towel rings and towel

    bars.

    Everyone loves the flavor

sage brings to turkeyand stuffing yet there

are so many great ways to

    enjoy this holiday flavor

    beyond its traditional use.

    Sage has that special

aroma we all crave this time of

year, which is why I love

adding it in my potato gratin

    with creamy cheddar cheese

    for a dish that immediately

    says holiday, said Mary Beth

Harrington of the McCormickKitchens. You can use sage in

    your everyday favorites

    because its such a versatile

    spice.

    Make every moment of

the season a little more savory

    by:

    Stirring sage into soft-

    ened butter for green beans,

    broccoli and rolls.

    Sprinkling sage on sweet

    potatoes, butternut squash or

    other roasted harvest vegeta-

    bles.

Mixing sage into meat-loaf for a festive family meal.

    Sage and Cheddar Potato

    Gratin

    Makes 12 (1/2 cup) servings

    2 teaspoons McCormick

    Rubbed Sage

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

    1/2 teaspoon McCormick

    Ground Black Pepper

    3 pounds Yukon Gold pota-

    toes, peeled and thinly sliced

    1 large onion, thinly sliced

    1 package (8 ounces) shred-

    ded cheddar cheese (2 cups)

1 cup chicken broth1 up heavy cream

    Preheat oven to 400F.

Mix sage, salt and pepper in

small bowl. Layer 1/3 of the

potatoes and 1/2 of the onion

    in lightly greased 13-by-9-

    inch baking dish. Sprinkle

with 1 teaspoon of the sage

mixture and 1/3 of the cheese.

    Repeat layers. Top with

remaining potatoes, sage mix-ture and cheese.

    Stir broth and cream in

    medium bowl with wire whisk

    until well blended. Pour even-

    ly over potatoes.

Bake 1 hour or untilpotatoes are tender and top is

    golden. Let stand 5 minutes

    before serving.

read about the needs of oth-

ers, involve them in thedonation process. They can

    assist with sorting clothing

and toys they may no longer

need and then help bag it up

and donate it to an agency

    that takes collected items.

    Give throughout the

year. Charity need not be lim-

    ited to the holiday season.

    Inform children that many

    people need throughout the

year, and that volunteering is a

    year-round activity.Match kids charitable

    fundraising. Encourage chil-

    dren to start their own

    fundraising efforts and match

the funds they raise. Find com-

panies that will also match the

    amount your children have

    raised.

    Set up a giving policy.

    Children can learn the impor-

tance of giving at an early age

    by dividing their allowances

and financial gifts into differ-ent categories. They can put

    one-third toward savings, one-

    third toward spending and

    one-third toward donations. If

children do not have a lot of

money in a piggy bank, they

    can donate their time, which

    many charities need as much

    as money.

    ESSENTIALS

    Wasting energy means

    wasting money. When you go

from a renter to a home

    owner, its important to recog-

nize and fix energy-drainingareas before bills pile up.

    Caulking around windows

    and spaces between the floor

    and baseboards in attics and

    sun rooms will help prevent

    drafts. Consider purchasing a

    draft stopper for the bottoms

of doors so wind or heat does-

    nt slip through. Additionally,

    service your furnace annually,

    so it produces more heat

    while using less energy.

    LET THERE BE LIGHT

Lighting is a great way toadd warmth to a sparse space.

If youre looking to create an

    intimate atmosphere, place

    several table lamps through-

out the room. -You can also

    amp up energy savings by

    switching to LED bulbs -

    these bulbs dont cause heat

buildup and last up to 10

times as long as compact fluo-

    rescents and 20 times longer

    than incandescent bulbs.

    Its very easy for decorat-

ing to become overwhelmingfor new homeowners. By

    starting with these few swift

    home decor swaps, your new

    home will be a comfortable

    and welcoming environment

    in no time.
