On September 11, 2001, as the World Trade Center towers were
falling, Cardinal Edward Egan was preparing to go to Rome where he
had been appointed to play a major role in the 2001 Synod of
Bishops as Relator, i.e. the one who summarizes all the
discussions. After spending several days consoling the survivors
and praying for those who had lost their lives, he flew to Rome to
begin planning for his Synod task. Almost immediately his American
advisors called him, urging him to return to New York where he was
desperately needed to stand vigil with his flock in their hour of
need. So Cardinal Egan returned to New York and Pope John Paul II
appointed Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio in his place, the first time
that many of the Cardinals and Bishops had ever heard of the
Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, for his part,
Cardinal Bergoglio was shocked at the way the Synod was run, with
many topics declared by the Curia as “off limits” to those who had
come from all over the world to express their heartfelt opinions
for the good of the Church. The Synod of Bishops was a creation of
Pope Paul VI towards the end of the Second Vatican Council at the
suggestion of Greek Melkite Patriarch Maximos IV as a way to flesh
out the teaching of the Council that “the order of bishops…together
with their head, the Supreme Pontiff, and never apart from him,
have supreme and full authority over the universal church.”(LG 22)
While Maximos had suggested a rotating body of bishops, resident in
Rome for a term, assisting the Pope with his teaching and
governance, Paul VI conceived instead of a small council of bishops
which would periodically provide a continuation after Vatican II
“of the abundance of benefits [provided to the Pope by] close
collaboration with the bishops.” However, a Synod would be totally
advisory and completely dependent on the Pope. It would discuss
topics and make recommendation but not settle questions or issue
decrees unless, in an extraordinary case, the Pope requested it.
Bishops and theologians were quick to point out that such a Synod
of Bishops did not at all represent collegial governance of the
Church as Vatican II called for but only a lesser form of
collaboration. Since 1967, there have been 15 ordinary General
synods, 3 extraordinary General Synods and 11 Special Regional
Synods (Netherlands, Europe, Africa, Lebanon, America, Asia,
Oceania, Europe, Africa, Middle East and, just concluded, for the
Pan-Amazon Region). Perhaps it was Pope Francis’ experience with
the 2001 Synod that has moved him to talk openly since the
beginning of his pontificate of the “synodality of the Church,”
i.e. trying to capture the collaborative nature of Vatican II’s
teaching that the bishops with the pope “have supreme and full
authority over the universal church.” Out of this ecclesiology, he
appointed in 2013 a kitchen cabinet of nine cardinals, representing
each region of the globe, to help him in his task of reforming and
simplifying the Roman Curia. Furthermore, he has allowed recent
Synods to speak their minds even on controversial subjects. For
example, it was the General Synod on the Family that recommended
that, with the help of a confessor, some divorced and remarried
might be allowed to receive continued on page 3

continued from page 2 Holy Communion again. More controversial
still have been the recommendations of the Pan-Amazonian Synod,
just ended, that women be allowed to be ordained deacons and mature
married male deacons of proven virtue be admitted to the priesthood
to end the dramatic shortage of clergy in indigenous regions of
South America. It remains to be seen whether the Pope will accept
and implement these recommendations but at least he has welcomed
the valuable suggestions freely given in an open consultative
process. It is a start. Peace to all, Fr. Hart

We are all called to gratefully give back to the Lord in proportion
to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn’t
called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal
sacrifice. No amount is too small or in- significant! Open your
heart, how is God calling you to be more generous with your
financial resources and possessions?
“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of
my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I extorted
anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.' " (Luke
19:8)
