Having had very little success in Athens,

Paul moved on.

If one won't hear, another will.

Move on and keep witnessing.

Acts 18 1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;

50 miles

While Athens was known for its culture and learning, Corinth was known for its

commerce, extravagance, and decadence.

Land trade moving north and south went through Corinth as did sea trade going east and west.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.

Corinth was the center for worship of Aphrodite, the goddess of love (eros) and

beauty. Immorality was pro-moted in the name of religion.

1 Corinthians 2 1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

Paul came alone to Corinth, a wicked city.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather going on even though fearful.

Paul's mindset

2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.

Once again God uses religious persecution to accomplish His Will.

Persecution was not God's Will, nor was it good.

But God used it to accomplish good.

They meant it for evil, but God used it for good.

3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

We don't know if Priscilla and Aquila were saved yet; they may have been,

Or Paul may have led them to the Lord.

Either way, God's Will was accomplished.

4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. 5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

Acts 18:5 (NIV) When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

Silas and Timothy must have brought some offerings from Macedonia.

6 And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

The NIV and TLB said they opposed Paul;

I think they got it wrong.

When people won't hear the Truth, they oppose themselves.

Even people who have been saved, some-times reject a portion of the Word of God.

They oppose themselves. When a person rejects any part of Scripture,

they lose God's blessing for obedience.

Example:

Page 12: Acts 18a moving on

12

Hebrews 10 24-25 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting (encouraging) one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Those who resist or reject coming together with the saints to worship God,

Miss out on many of God's blessings.

Encouragement Word taught Fellowship

Plus God's blessing for simple obedience.
