Shooting Equipment Placement

By Ben Kurata

Shooting Equipment Placement

Action Target

Provo, Utah --(Ammoland.com)- Thoughts on equipment placement,

conditioned response, reaction time, Hick’s Law, the 21 foot guideline,

and the OODA loop

Disclaimer 1:

I do not consider myself to be an expert on any of the above

topics. I am, however, really good at asking questions. I am

a serious student of human behavior under stress.

Disclaimer 2:

In no way what I write should be misinterpreted as passing

judgment on the Officer(s) involved. In the past, I have been

judged by people who were not beside me when bad things

happened. I refuse to be a “Monday morning quarterback”

to situations I was not involved in.

Disclaimer 3:

The above title gives the reader an insight into how my mind

works. I struggle on a good day to have an independent

thought. I have had the privilege, however, to have trained

with some absolutely brilliant thinkers / operators /

teachers. I will attempt to give them the credit they deserve.

Recently, a transit Officer was convicted of homicide after he shot an

individual to death while attempting to control the subject’s behavior.

According to the Officer’s testimony, he thought he was reaching for his

Taser but discharged his duty firearm instead, killing the subject.

Now, I am not here to pass judgment on the Officer’s actions, as I was

not there. But for some time, I have recommended that Tasers be

mounted on the duty belt on the non-dominant side, with the grip

pointed backward, NOT in a cross-draw position. Why? Well, over the

course of his / her career, a LEO may pull their handgun from its holster

hundreds, maybe thousands of times during in-service training and

qualification. A LE Trainer may pull a handgun from its holster tens of

thousands of times.

Question: How many times does an average LEO pull a Taser from its

holster and discharge it? In most departments that I have trained with,

after initial training (with its “special” videotaped moments), the only

time a Taser gets pulled from its holster is when it is used on a subject. I

know of no in-service or qualification live fire course of fire for the Taser.

What’s the point?

Well, many years ago, someone much wiser than I will ever be said:

“Under stress, you will revert to what you do most often or most

recently.”

I only wish I could remember who told me that so I could give them

credit. The point is, the dominant hand has been conditioned by

hundreds (if not thousands) of repetitions to access and fire the

handgun, not the Taser.

Similarly, I wish I could have a dollar for every time I saw on the range a

cell phone or pager get pulled from the belt and forcibly stuffed into the

magazine well of a weapon. Why? Because the operator was reverting

back to the location and object on his / her duty belt that (s)he accesses

most often in the course of a day – dozens of times.

Many years ago, fellow Action Target Instructor Dennis Tueller

established the 21 foot guideline which has been misinterpreted over the

years as the “21 foot rule”. While not diminishing the validity of what

Dennis established, I can say that for the average LE Instructor (who, in

theory, should be smoother and quicker at presenting the duty handgun

from the duty holster) the average reactionary gap when wearing a Level

II or Level III retention holster is more like 40 – 60 feet. That is with the

outcome pre-determined – draw the handgun and place one or two well-

placed shots on an inert practice target. Under the stress of a life

-threatening attack, reaction time can double, quadruple, or deteriorate

even more. Why? Well, some definitions may be useful:

Reaction Time:

“Reaction time has sometimes been described as a function of Hick’s

law:

(1) H = log2(n + 1).

(2) H = ? pi log2(1/pi + 1).

H = the information-theoretic entropy of a decision.

n = the number of equally probable alternatives.

pi = the probability of alternative i for n alternatives of unequal

probability.

The time it takes to make a decision is roughly proportional to H, the

entropy of the decision (the log of the number of alternatives), i.e. T = k

H, where k ~ 150 msec” 1

Now, I have no idea what that means, but it may be useful in calculating

the probability of getting a raise or the budget you submitted. “Entropy

of the decision” is the scientific way of saying “brain cramp”! What is

important to note is that formula was established by test subjects that

were not being presented with life-threatening stimuli, and under ideal

conditions, reaction time is a logarithmic, (12, 22, 32, etc.) not an

arithmetic (1 + 1, 2 + 1, etc.) variable.

Now, how many use of force options does the average Officer have?

1. Presence;

2. Verbal instructions / commands;

3. Empty hand techniques;

4. Aerosol spray;

5. Baton;

6. Taser;

7. Radio;

8. Lethal force, which can include:

1. Handgun;

2. Folding knife;

3. Baton, if targeted on “red” areas of the anatomy;

4. Shotgun;

5. Patrol Rifle;

6. Improvised weapons (“Bumper – 06”);

7. Etc.

And, let us not forget that word that has been pounded into every

Officer’s head (and we have to share the responsibility for this one):

Liability.

4

Now, let’s add the one factor that throws almost all probability theory

out the window: Life – threatening stimuli.

A concept which may be more useful in understanding actual reaction

time under life – threatening circumstances may be USAF Lt. Col. (Ret.)

John Boyd’s OODA loop. It is not my intention here to recap my

understanding of the OODA loop. (For an excellent summary, please

locate and read Ken Good’s article, “Got a Second? Boyd’s OODA Cycle

in the Close Quarter Battle Environment”.) Suffice it to say that after

being in and running a few force-on-force simulations, most people

(including myself) make mistakes in the initial Observation phase and

then get caught in what Ken Murray describes as a “goofy loop” 2 –

unable to make an appropriate decision as to what to do next. Or, caught

on the reaction (wrong) side of the action / reaction curve.

So What?

Well, let me just throw this out for thought:

• All less lethal tools (including radio, pager, and cell phone) on the

non – dominant side of the duty belt / LBE, etc., accessed and

practiced with the non-dominant hand.

• All lethal force tools on the dominant side of the duty belt, accessed

and practiced with the dominant hand.

Now, please don’t misinterpret me. I am not saying to stop practicing

wounded / disabled drills. Now, more than ever, I practice accessing,

shooting, reloading, and clearing stoppages with the non – dominant

hand AND EYE only. It all boils down to, “Under stress, you will revert

to what you do most often or most recently.”

(If you are the trainer who said that to me many years ago, please contact

me so that I can give you proper credit.)

Thompson/Center Arms Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader

Maryland Department of Natural Resources

Annapolis, MD --(Ammoland.com)- Maryland’s late muzzleloader

season for deer opens on Saturday, December 18 and continues through

January 1, 2011. The early winter season is popular with deer hunters

and affords them the opportunity to pursue their favorite game with a

different type of firearm.

“Muzzleloader hunting is a great opportunity for hunters to

enjoy more time in the woods with friends and family,” said

DNR’s Deer Project Leader Brian Eyler. “Last year

approximately 35 percent of our muzzleloader hunters were

successful in harvesting at least one deer.”

Deer hunting regulations vary between the two Deer Management

Regions in Maryland. Region A consists of Garrett and Allegany counties

and, new this season, the western half of Washington County. Region B

includes eastern Washington County and the remaining 20 counties.

Bag limits, season dates and other deer hunting information can be

USA Shooting’s Athletes of theYear – Kim Rhode & JoshuaRichmondDEC 09, 2010 04:28P.M.

USA Shooting’s Athletes of the Year: Kim Rhode & Joshua

Richmond

USA Shooting’s Athletes of the Year: Kim Rhode & Joshua Richmond

USA Shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- USA Shooting is

pleased to announce Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) and Staff Sgt. Joshua

Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) as the 2010 Female and Male Athlete of the

Year.

Rhode had an outstanding year with a World Championship title, a

National title, two World Cup gold medals, a World Cup Final silver and

an equaled world record.

Rhode started things off with a terrific showing at the Acapulco World

Cup, nailing 97 out of 100 targets for the gold medal. Shortly thereafter,

she equaled the world record at the World Cup in Beijing as she shot 98

out of 100 targets for gold. Next, with 92 out of 100 targets, Rhode

finished fourth at the Dorset World Cup in England. Rhode then traveled

to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the USA Shooting National

Championship.

At the International Shooting Park, she won the competition with 267

out of 275 targets. Combined with her score from Nationals, Rhode’s 235

out of 250 targets from Fall Selection landed her a spot on the 2011

World Clay Target Team. Just three weeks after Nationals, Rhode took

on the top shooters in the world at the World Shooting Championships

in Munich, Germany. Rhode stayed straight in the final to secure the

gold medal and World Champion title with 97 out of 100 targets.

Finally, Rhode’s gold medal year was worthy of an invite to the

prestigious World Cup Final, where she equaled the qualification round

world record of 74 out of 75 targets and shot 21 out of 25 targets in the

final for the silver medal. National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson said,

“Kim is a dominating force on the international scene and has been for

years. If you look at the results for this year, I think she is still getting

better.” And Rhode’s lustrous career is only expected to shine a little

brighter.

She currently leads the point total in U.S. Olympic Team selection, and

unless another shooter equals or exceeds her point total, she will have

earned her berth to the 2012 Olympic Games. A particular event that

holds much importance for Rhode because she is chasing a new record-

five in five: if Rhode makes the team and medals in London, she will be

the first American athlete of an individual sport to win five medals in five

consecutive Olympic Games.

In regard to her Female Athlete of the Year nod, Rhode said,

“This last year was my best year to date and I appreciate

being selected for Athlete of the Year. I couldn’t have done it

without help from USA Shooting, the coaches and sponsors.

USA Shooting Team sponsors, such as Winchester, Perazzi

and SHE Outdoors have helped members of the team bring

home medals this last year. As a team member I thank all the

sponsors for their support of our shooting team.”

USA Shooting would like to congratulate Kim Rhode on her successful

year.

Staff Sgt. Joshua Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) turns 25 years old on Dec.

19, and has a lot more to celebrate than simply adding a year. Like

Rhode, Richmond began his top-notch year in Acapulco, Mexico at the

first shotgun World Cup of the season. Richmond scored 192 out of 200

targets for the gold medal and a solid start on the year. Shortly

thereafter, he finished fourth at the Dorset World Cup with a score of 188

out of 200 targets. In Colorado Springs, Richmond won the silver medal

at the USA Shooting National Championship with 333 out of 350 targets.

At the World Shooting Championship in Munich, Germany, Richmond

was on fire. He nailed an amazing 146 out of 150 targets in qualification

and stayed straight in the final for a total of 196 out of 200 targets-an

equaled world record score, gold medal and World Championship title.

Richmond topped the ranking at the Fall Selection Match in Kerrville,

Texas, shooting 328 out of 350 targets.

National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson said, “Having one of

the deepest and most talented Men’s Double Trap teams in

the world, it is a huge accomplishment for Josh to step out

and be the leader of that team.” Though his birthday is on the

horizon, Richmond is still out at Hook Range at the U.S.

Army Marksmanship Unit in Fort Benning, Ga., training for

2012. “I would like to thank the USAMU for molding me into

a champion, Winchester for building a great international

load to use for the 2010 season and Perazzi shotguns for

building a flawless competition over and under. I would also

like to thank family and friends for supporting me through

this journey as well as Les Greevy (USA Shooting regional

coach, Northeast), for molding the way for me and many

junior shooters to experience this great sport. Shoot To Win!”

said Richmond.

He also wanted to note the accomplishments of fellow

USAMU Shooter Daryl Szarenski “who has had an

outstanding year as well and it is unfortunate that they don’t

award two awards for this.”

USA Shooting would like to congratulate Sgt. Joshua Richmond on a

world-class year.

small game and waterfowl hunting.

“Although 2010 licenses remain valid until Jan. 31, we

encourage hunters and anglers to renew their licenses early in

the year so they don’t forget to renew before their first

outings in February,[g1] ” said South Dakota Game, Fish and

Parks Department Licensing Supervisor Shon Eide.

“We find many people, especially grandparents, giving

hunting and fishing licenses as Christmas gifts each year.

after Dec. 15 will then have a license that is valid for the

remainder of the 2011 calendar year.”

Annual resident fishing licenses will cost $27, and resident small-game

hunting licenses will cost $31; for a resident combination (small game

and fishing) the cost is $51, and the resident migratory bird certificate is

Montana End-of-Season HunterCheck Station Figures IndicateVaried HarvestDEC 09, 2010 03:57P.M.

Montana End-of-Season Hunter Check Station Figures

Indicate Varied Harvest

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks

HAVRE, Mont. --(Ammoland.com)- Final figures compiled from the

FWP Region 6 hunter game check station outside Havre show a higher

number of white-tailed deer and mule deer were checked in as compared

to other recent hunting seasons.

According to FWP biologist Scott Hemmer, the number of pronghorn

antelope, elk, pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian (gray)

partridge brought in was in each case less than the average checked in

recent years.

This season 333 pronghorn antelope, 689 mule deer, 314 white-tailed

deer, 33 elk, 707 pheasants, 156 sharp-tailed grouse and 50 Hungarian

partridge were brought to the check station by hunters.

Hemmer said check station data indicate the 2010 antelope harvest was

down 17 percent, the mule deer harvest was up 11 percent, the white-

tailed deer harvest was up 24 percent, the pheasant harvest was down 32

percent, and the sharp-tailed grouse harvest was up 3 percent.

While numbers of elk and Hungarian partridge were also down this year,

state biologists said not enough of these species come through the Havre

check station to provide meaningful harvest trend data. FWP will also be

conducting the annual telephone harvest survey this winter, which will

give more accurate harvest information by species for individual hunting

districts.

FWP Region 6 Wildlife Program Manger Mark Sullivan noted that mild

fall temperatures and excellent habitat conditions during the first part of

the big game season reduced movements and feeding activity by big

game animals in many areas.

“Although big game numbers were generally good across the

Region, animals were not very visible during the first half of

the season,” Sullivan said. “Weather conditions changed

abruptly during the fourth week of the season as

temperatures dropped to well below freezing, and repeated

snowfall made hunting conditions and travel difficult. This

caused animals to be much more visible and concentrated,

but hunter numbers dropped in many hunting districts the

last two weekends due to snow, cold and poor road

conditions.”

Sullivan said FWP field personnel noticed a significant increase in big

game hunter numbers in Region 6, particularly in the hunting districts

between Glasgow and Havre. Most of these were deer hunters who may

have been displaced from other parts of the state due to lower deer

numbers in their traditional hunting areas.

G5′s New Mag-Loc Quiver is the Most Versatile Quiver

Available

G5 Outdoors

MEMPHIS, Mich. --(Ammoland.com)- G5 Outdoors, the leading

manufacturer in archery equipment and design, introduces the Mag-Loc

Quiver.

With its unique magnetic mounting system the Mag-Loc is quite possibly

the most versatile quiver on the market and will fit virtually every bow in

either the riser mounted quiver holes or sight mounted quiver holes.

“We wanted a quiver system that provided versatility in

mounting with a quick, easy and silent detachable system,”

stated G5 Outdoors Vice-President and Co-Owner, Matt

Grace. “The result is the Mag-Loc with its Patent Pending

Mag-Loc magnetic mounting system.”

G5’s New Mag-Loc Quiver is the Most Versatile Quiver Available

The quiver will come in a number of models including an upper riser

hole mounting model, sight mounted version and a universal spline

bracket that can convert any universal sight mounted quiver or quiver

with a standard ammo base to an upper riser mount design.

The magnetic mounting system solves the inherent problem associated

with mounting quivers to slider sights that won’t accept a quiver or

become too bulky. The Mag-Loc can also be mounted to a tree by using

the Mag-Loc tree mount, which features a female base with threaded

screw to be installed in a tree, along with Mag-Loc Treestand Mount,

which has female bracket that has a second more powerful magnet that

attaches to steel stands. Zip ties are also included for aluminum stands.

With its Mag-Tough Magnesium stem and steel reinforced gripper the

Mag-Loc has the durability to complement its versatility. The Mag-Loc is

available in Black, AP, Max 1 and Lost Camo.

MSRP for the Mag-Loc models are: Upper Riser mounted ($99.99),

Sight Mounted ($65.99), Spline Bracket ($29.99), Mag-Loc Tree Mount

($9.99) and Mag-Loc Treestand Mount ($14.99)

Taurus 740 Slim Pistol

GunsForSale.com

Dallas, TX --(Ammoland.com)- GunsForSale.com, the premier gun and

ammunition e-commerce site, announced the publication of a

comprehensive review of the Taurus 740 Slim pistol. The review was

published on the GunsForSale.com blog, Guns, Holsters and Gear.

“The Taurus 740 proved to be an incredible value,” said

Richard Johnson, the author of the review. “It offers .40-

caliber stopping power in a small, easy to conceal package,

while maintaining a price that everyone can afford.”

The Taurus 740 pistol was tested on the range using a wide variety of self

defense and practice ammunition. Features including the manual safety,

SA/DA trigger system, and the three-dot, adjustable sights were all

tested and evaluated.

“The pistol performed very well,” said Johnson. “Everything

just worked. But, what surprised me was the out-of-the-box

accuracy. The sights are excellent on a pistol of this size, and

shots were dead on.”

The complete Taurus 740 review can be found at GunsForSale.com.

Ohioans For Concealed Carryon Ohio Senate RestaurantCarry BillDEC 09, 2010 12:07P.M.

A Statement From Ohioans For Concealed Carry on Ohio

Senate Bill 239 before the Ohio House

Ohioans For Concealed Carry on Ohio Senate Restaurant Carry Bill

Ohioans For Concealed Carry

Ohio --(Ammoland.com)- Recently the news media and pundits have

gone out of their way to misrepresent the truth behind Senate Bill 239,

legislation that would allow a concealed handgun licensee to enter a

restaurant or other liquor serving business.

When this bill was introduced it was stated “when you go to the next

Indian’s game someone will have a beer in one hand and a gun in the

other hand”, and recently this bill has been opposed with the phrase

“mixing guns and bars,” which is effective but inaccurate propaganda.

The graphic above shows that Ohio is not adopting a new idea. In fact, 16

of the 18 states that honor Ohio’s concealed handgun license while

Ohioans travel allow Ohioans to carry a firearm in restaurants that serve

alcohol in those states. Source: http://opencarry.org MYTH: SB239 is to

allow concealed hangun licensees to carry in bars.

• FACT: The legislation allows someone to enter a restaurant or

other Class D establishment only if they are both:

• a) not consuming any alcohol at all while in that

establishment

• b) not already under the influence of alcohol as defined by

ORC 2923.15 (remains as written today)

• FACT: Existing Ohio law (ORC 2923.15) prohibits mere possession

of a firearm by anyone under the influence. Senate Bill 239 does

not change this at all. It remains a crime to be under the influence

and possess.

• FACT: SB239 was written to allow a concealed handgun licensee to

eat lunch or dinner at a restaurant that happens to have a liquor

license, such as Chipolte, Ruby Tuesdays, or an Applebee’s.

• FACT: The armed patron of a restaurant may not consume alcohol

at all or they’re in violation of SB239.

• FACT: SB239 would make eating dinner at a restaurant or other

Class D establishment no different than walking down the liqour

aisle of a grocery story while armed.

• FACT: People don’t go to bars to “not drink” intoxicating

beverages, so they wouldn’t fall under SB239. However, a cash

delivery vendor who may service that business could lawfully carry

a firearm.

• MYTH: The police are opposed to allowing “guns in bars” and

claim it’ll lead to bloodshed.

• FACT: A substantial number of FOP and other union lodges have

Class D liqour permits & server liquor to cops.

• FACT: Police officers in Ohio lobbied for this exact exemption for

them in HB347 in 2007.

• FACT: The Cleveland Patrolman’s Association’s “Zone Car

Lounge”, limited to police officers, serves alcohol.

• FACT: Regardless of SB239’s fate the only people in Ohio who can

lawfully be armed & drink in a bar are cops.

HB203/SB239 by Ohio Law Enforcement:

SB239 flow-chart: http://bit.ly/g5pEvs

The facts are quite simple – this legislation allows Ohio’s concealed

handgun licensees to eat at a restaurant that happens to serve alcohol or

have a bar in a separate section of the restaurant, so long as they do not

drink. The legislation does not prohibit a proprietor from posting a “No

Guns” sign like any other private business.

The legislation does not, in any fashion, legalize or authorize

the possession of a firearm by anyone consuming alcohol in

any quantity, nor allow the same for anyone under the

influence of alcohol as already prohibited by law.

Residents Invited to Celebrate ‘Shoe Year’s Eve’ and More at

Michigan State Parks & Recreation Areas

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- For anyone looking for an unusual and

inexpensive way to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Michigan, the

Department of Natural Resources and Environment offers “Shoe Year’s

Eve” – a great opportunity to grab the GPS, explore thousands of acres of

scenic state land by snowshoe, and then relax in a cozy cabin nestled

among some of Michigan’s most beautiful natural destinations.

“This has become a ‘don’t miss’ annual tradition with my

friends,” said DNRE recreation programmer Maia Stephens.

“For years, we’ve donned our headlights, snowshoed the

campground at night, enjoyed a potluck in the cabin, and

then warmed our toes by campfire. No crowds, no dangerous

driving – just a chance to relax, reflect and reconnect with

those who mean the most.”

Stephens said for those who have already made plans to ring in the new

year, there is plenty of time and ample opportunity to enjoy unique

winter experiences at Michigan’s state parks and recreation areas.

“You’d like to build your own snowshoes? Ski by lantern

light? Enjoy a serene, guided winter hike? Michigan’s state

parks have all that and more,” said Stephens.

She cited more than 50 cabins (some that are “ski-in” only), yurts and

lodges that are available throughout the winter and offer a quiet getaway,

as well as several campgrounds for those who want a unique winter

camping experience complete with modern amenities.

“Snow or not, our state parks offer plenty of opportunities for

guests to enjoy Michigan’s winter magic and great outdoors

during this special time of year,” said Ron Olson, chief of the

DNRE’s Recreation Division. “Groomed ski trails, old-growth

forests, riverside cabins … these are just a few of the

wonderful recreational opportunities you can take advantage

of during the winter months.”

With the offering of the Recreation Passport (which replaced

the annual motor vehicle permit Oct. 1), Stephens said now is

the perfect time to get outdoors at Michigan state parks. “The

Recreation Passport is just $10 when Michigan residents

renew their license plates through Secretary of State,” she

explained. “The Passport is your ticket to visit all 98 state

parks and recreation areas as many times as you want, for the

duration of your registration.”

A list follows of scheduled snowshoe, cross-country skiing and other

winter events at Michigan state parks and recreation areas. To check the

latest up-to-date event listings, get a list of groomed ski trails, and

available winter lodging, visit www.michigan.gov/stateparks.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is committed to

the conservation, protection, management, and accessible use and

enjoyment of the state’s environment, natural resources and related

economic interests for current and future generations. Learn more at

ASYM Precision Ammunition

DURANGO, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- ASYM PRECISION National

Match Target ammunition is a match winning, extremely accurate load

that tells the shooter just how well their tuned 45 can perform.

Featuring the Nosler 185 grain JHP – a bullet prized among serious

bullseye shooters for its gilt-edged accuracy – the National Match Target

is a mild shooting target round. Utilizing ASYM match brass, which is

custom drawn brass made to ASYM’s specifications, and propelled by

premium VihtaVouri powder, the round is loaded to 775 fps, a velocity

proven to be a sweet spot in accuracy and function.

“As a custom 1911 maker whose customers expect uncommon

accuracy, I looked to the Camp Perry National Matches for

the inspiration behind our National Match Target

ammunition. We built this round from the ground up using

only premium components, assembled on state-of-the-art

equipment customized to my own standards and hand-

inspected and individually chamber checked as part of a

quality control process that insures outstanding

performance,” explained Stan Chen, president of Stan Chen

Customs and ASYM Ammunition.

The National Match Target is available in a box of 50 or a case of 500

and will run in most 1911s using a stock 16 lbs. spring. For more brisk

ejection, springs from 10 to 14 lbs. can be used.

The load is a premium target load and although it uses a JHP projectile,

the bullet is not designed to expand at the given velocity. Those looking

for a premium defensive load should consider the ASYM SOLID

DEFENSE XTM (SDX) load featuring the Barnes solid copper TAC-XP

bullet.

“Besides being the definitive accuracy load for competition,

the National Match Target is an extremely pleasant load to

shoot, especially in extended training sessions,” observed

Chen. “So much so that we warn our customers to beware,

because this round will make them fall in love with their 45

all over again.”

Louisiana’s Historic Conservation Magazine Goes Digital

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

Louisiana –(Ammoland.com)- The first online magazine for the

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) was launched

on Tues, Dec. 7, opening the gateway for global exposure to the well-

known and historical document, Louisiana Conservationist magazine

(LCM).

As with many traditional publications these days, the LCM ceased

printed publication in Spring 2010 with plans to launch an electronic

version in the summer.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill, however, postponed the magazine’s new

electronic format, consuming LDWF staff’s time during the summer.

Louisiana’s Historic Conservation Magazine Goes Digital

Each issue will contain the same great stories and photography that was

the hallmark of the printed magazine. Articles in this first online issue

include details on LDWF’s efforts throughout the recent oil spill disaster,

great gun cleaning tips and recipes from the 2010 Louisiana Seafood

Cook-Off in New Orleans.

Links to related web sites, department videos, and photographs are

scattered throughout the magazine along with all the popular social

networking tools. The new site also offers the option to create a

username, allowing for access to comments and notification of upcoming

editions.

“We are excited about this new venture for the

Conservationist,” commented LDWF Secretary Robert

Barham, “Moving forward with an online version invites the

entire world to step inside and see our great state from a

closer view.”

First printed in 1926, Louisiana Conservationist magazine was created to

keep Louisiana citizens informed and educated on fish and game

regulations and conservation programs. It has survived through the

generations, evolving and changing with the world. Today its legacy

continues, moving forward with the electronic age.
