RELAY FOR LIFE MAY 2-3, 2014

MIAMI COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back

Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events. They provide you an opportunity to celebrate, remember and fight back against a disease that has taken too much. CELEBRATE: Beginning with the inspiring Survivors Lap, Relay celebrates the lives of people who have battled cancer and the victories that have been achieved over the disease. REMEMBER: During the luminaria ceremony, participants walk the track in silence as they take time to remember or grieve loved ones lost to cancer and find healing, FIGHT BACK: The money raised at Relay For Life enables the American Cancer Society to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, and by finding cures, and by fighting back.

There are many ways YOU can become a part of the life-changing

event.

Project Believe

She remembers the forgotten. The ones that even in today’s society find a simple pair of socks or a scarf more meaningful than ever.

Tammie Rafferty figured this out quite by accident several years ago when her daughter became hospitalized — and eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia. Her daughter would remain in the hospital

for a year, and Rafferty visited frequently. “I came to realize early on that I was the only parent I ever

saw and found out most of them were foster children,” said Rafferty. This immediately tugged at her heart strings.

The Tipp City resident said although the children in the hospital unit with her daughter were children

with emotional and mental health issues receiving long-term therapy, they were allowed to have many of the creature comforts of home but most had nothing. “Most of the kids were wearing hospital-issued

items, and my daughter had her comforter and PJs and slippers.”

So, Rafferty, a former executive who walked away from the corporate world and now waits tables,

started by purchasing basic items such as PJs for the 10 children in her daughter’s unit …and Project Believe was born.

Project Believe, funded by private sponsors, makes sure foster children who are hospitalized long term are not forgotten at Christmastime. The nonprofit organization also provides for the children throughout

the year, including Valentine’s Day, Easter and back-to-school. The program now serves 65 children in two hospitals, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Marsh Foundation in Van Wert. There are

approximately 30,000 other children in the same situation.

“Once (my daughter) was released, I promised myself, they would never be overlooked again,” Rafferty

said through tears. “They truly are the forgotten kids. So, it’s just the tip of the iceberg here.”

Rafferty said gifts at Christmas include such items as pajamas, socks, underwear, scarves and mittens — some of the children’s basic needs, plus anything extra the organization can secure. Rafferty’s

grandmother, who passed a year ago, used to knit many items for the children. Now, people from all

over the U.S. have stepped up to help.

Rafferty said two children always continue to remind her importance of her organization. First, she said she remembers a small boy who wore one hospital-issued sock and one tube sock. “To think that that

one tube sock was his only possession,” said Rafferty, her voice cracking.”He unwrapped the new

socks, put them on and came out smiling, sliding down the hallway in his new socks ….”

Choral Anthem: “Hosanna to the King of Kings!” Arranged by Lloyd Larson

Hosanna to the King of Kings! Lift your voice in praise and sing: He comes this day, O glorious day! Let your loud hosannas ring! Let the people shout, let the rocks cry out! He comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna to the King of Kings! Sing hosanna to the King! Lift up your heads, O mighty gates; Open wide, you ancient doors,

That the king of glory may come in! Let us worship and adore. Who is this King of glory Who comes in the name of the Lord? He is the Lord Almighty! Sing hosanna to the King!

Hosanna, hosanna! Sing praise to Christ, the King! We sing hosanna, hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes today In the name of the Lord! Hosanna to the King of Kings! Wave your palms and joyfully sing! See the King who comes on a donkey’s colt. Let your loud hosannas ring! Rejoice, O people of Zion! He comes to set you free.

Hosanna to the King of Kings! Sing hosanna to the King. Amen.

The Altar flowers are presented to the Glory of God by Ed and Bette Cahill, in honor of their 62nd Wedding

Anniversary on April 8.
