Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
Today is the last day of the octave of Easter and it is Mercy
Sunday. Today’s celebration goads us to reflect on the mercy
God extends so generously to us, and on the mercy we should
always be extending to others.
I’d like to take this opportunity to try and thank the many people
who made our Holy Week/Easter Triduum celebrations so very
beautiful. There is always a danger in this, because invariably
someone is forgotten. But allow me to try. I wish to first to
thank the many altar servers coordinated by Michael Elmore and
Jose Bernal, who not only served for all of the Holy Week
celebrations, they also put in many hours practicing and
rehearsing. Many of our altar servers have moved away because
of school, but faithfully continue to come back. Their serving is
done with such precision. A special word of thanks to Mery
Madera and her assistants, who always have the church
beautifully decorated for each of these special days. To Peter
Steinfels, Nelson Falcon, Jan Dugan, Manuel Filpo and the many
others for all the good work that they have done with RCIA, I
also extend my thanks. I’d also like to thank the ushers and
those who worked so diligently putting together and coordinating
the Good Friday Procession.
Certainly one of the things vital to a good liturgy is good music.
In that area we do not lack. A word of thanks to Jose Baez and
the Walkirios for their music on Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday but
most particularly for the wonderful music on Good Friday and
during the procession. And finally a word of thanks to Preston
Smith and the wonderful choir of Ascension for their well
prepared, well sung liturgies. The music provided by our choir is
superb - second to none. Thank you to all our parish musicians.
Special mention must be given to Dominic Armstrong, Will
Ferguson, and Michael Rice who sang the Passion on Good
Friday. A word of thanks to Laura Green and Margarita Martinez
who led morning prayer on Friday and Saturday, and a special
word of thanks to our Trumpeter, Jim Hynes and our Violinist ,
Matheus Souza. All of these were coordinated by our excellent
music director, Preston Smith. Thank you, Preston! I also wish
to thank especially Paul and Irene Bogoni who generously help
make this music possible. And, finally, a word of thanks to the
many who did so much but would prefer to not be mentioned by
name.
Finally, in your name, I would like to congratulate the 4
catechumens, Keila Lin Torres, Rachel Cico, Anthony Rivera,
and Alicia Collins, and all the candidates of the parish who
received their sacraments at the Easter Vigil! Our prayers are
with them!
Our celebration of the Easter Season now continues.
Peace,
Fr. Kearney
Semana Santa/Triduo Pascual fuera tan bella.
especiales. A Peter Steinfels, Nelson Falcón, Jan Dugan y a
Dominic Armstrong, Will Ferguson y Michael Rice que cantaron
trompetista, Jim Hynes y nuestro violinista, Matheus Souza.
cuatro catecúmenos, Keila Lin Torres, Rachel Cico, Anthony
Paz, Padre Kearney

Presented by the Curran Center for American
Catholic Studies
Fordham University | Lincoln Center Campus |
April 27-29, 2017
There was a time
when Catholic writers dominated the literary scene in Ameri-
ca. Figures such as Dorothy Day, Flannery O’Connor, and Walk-
er Percy were well-known by American readers, even as they
bore witness to a
particularly Catholic view of the world as embodied in their books.
In recent years,
some important questions have been raised in Catholic cir-
cles: why do Catholic writers seem no longer to hold a dominant
position in American literary culture? Is it possible any more—or
desirable—to
self-identify as a Catholic writer in a post-religious age?
In April, 2017, you are invited
to engage in discussion about the role that Catholic writers
play both in American culture and in the life of the Church, and in
the future. The conference will offer a forum to engage in dia-
logue on issues surrounding the Catholic Literary Imagination
through plenary sessions, panels, and concurrent programs.
Plenary speakers will include
Dana Gioia | Ron Hansen | Alice McDermott | Mary Gordon |
Micheal O’Siadhail | Philip Metres | Fr. James Martin | Angela
Alaimo O’Donnell
Conference Sessions Include
Scorsese, Silence, & The Ignatian Imagination
Catholic Women’s Voices
Contemporary Catholic Fiction: ‘Making Belief Believable’
The Legacy of Dante in Art, Literature, & Culture
Curating the Catholic Imagination: Editors’ Roundtable Discus-
sion
