  • Well, I cannot be sure that my opinion of their content is consistently on target, but when it comes to their stance on over-air conditioning being a major source of pollution, they need to check the facts.

In reality we burn more fossil fuel right now to heat our homes than we do to cool them. And, most people are actually running air conditioners less oft en or at higher tempera-tures than in years past. On average we use our air conditioners about 700 hours out of the year. On the fl ip side we use our furnaces and boilers for around 2300 hours of the year. Th ink about it. Most homes only need air con-ditioning for 3-4 months in our area. And aft er a summer like this one; that number might be closer to 2-3 months of actual air conditioning usage.

So, why do I care? Well, the truth of the matter is that air conditioning can actually have some important benefi ts to our homes and our health. Properly installed and operating air conditioning systems not only help to remove the humidity in our spaces, - which is its main job - but can ultimately have an important im-pact on our health. Proper humidity (not too much, not too little) is essential in eliminating damage to hardwood, as well as in preventing the growth of mold. Th e optimum balance of the amount of indoor humidity is achieved by mechanicals designed for that purpose: your HVAC system along with, at times, de-hu-midifi ers such as ones we have discussed in previous publications.

How are you sure your use of air conditioning is not only environmentally smart but health conscience?

First, have your air conditioner serviced and tuned-up. Proper refrigerant levels and com-ponent performance ensure the systems are operating at the ideal temperature drop. Th is range is based on and determined by creating

the de-humidifying eff ect itself. Use the latest charging and performance based checks, you get ideal humidity levels at a not so outrageous price.

Second, make sure you are running some sort of program or schedule on your thermostat. By using a schedule your equipment can oper-ate in a more effi cient manner - not only for cooling down your space, but also avoiding excessive or wasteful electrical costs.

Th ird, ensure clean coils and fi lters all summer long. Do not be afraid to wash off outdoor condensing units in-between maintenance vis-its. Our area is subject to many factors contrib-uting to dirty coils. Cotton woods and other debris have a dramatic impact on the systems functionality and performance. And learn the recommended intervals for changing and cleaning your air fi lters. Dirty air fi lters have a serious eff ect on your equipment, comfort, and overall happiness.

Finally, just be smart with your air condi-tioning use. Stop trying to close off vents, or over-cooling areas to overcome any tempera-ture diff erences. If you are living with tem-perature variations, get them fi xed to not only save your sanity but help save you money and headaches. Proper system design and imple-mentation can have a dramatic eff ect on how wastefully or optimally your system operates, not only with energy usage, but in avoiding unnecessary breakdowns.

Lets face it, when it is hot out the stress levels rise and so does the murder rate. Now lets not go out and be wasteful, but remember that SMART air conditioning is not evil, despite what the New York Times may tell you. Get that thought out of your head. Smart air condi-tioning keeps us, happy, healthy, and cool.

include us? I shouldnt complain because Frank and I always do have a great time when we are off on our own, away from everyone, where we can just be dogs hanging out with new friends. So many new dogs to meet, not have to go to work, and not dealing with a 2 year old scaring and chasing us (man, is he getting FAST!) while we try to rest is just what the vet ordered.

Fall is right around the corner which means more thun-derstorms in my future. And boy do I hate the thunder and lighting. Yes I know hate is a strong word that should be used sparingly, but there is no other way to describe it for me. Thankfully I should be at the house with my family now that everyone is back home. -Talk soon!

I hope so. It is time to re-con-nect with our sense of humor in honor of August 16th, and National Tell a Joke Day. Why is this an important holiday, and why should you care? Because laughing and smiling are good for you, no matter what you think about looking silly or getting wrin-kled from it. Th is fact is scientifi cally backed. Yes, actual scientifi c studies confi rm the benefi ts. I have validation for my sometimes hogwash opinions:

A university study performed in California found that laughter and humor not only eff ectively reduced the stress hormone cortisol, but also im-proved memory recall. Another study done at Vanderbilt University conclud-ed 10-15 minutes of laughter actually burned around 40 calories. Seriously. Adding my two cents to this, I say the heat tends to stress us out so it is important to take some time to laugh and smile. You may use your hand held

    hat should be

device to assist in this instance, how-ever, laughing without it is even better. As far as I can tell. Please accept from me a free and cheesy - much needed - random humor joke:

A dog walks into a bar and hops up on a stool. He looks the bartender in the eye and says, Hey, guess what? I can talk. Have you ever seen a talking dog before? How about a drink?

Th e bartender thinks for a moment and says, Sure, the toilets right around the corner.

    Laughter, Still Best Medicine...

I thought instead of another month of rambling I have more fun with touching life lesson stories...I hope you enjoy...

Th e 92-year old petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight oclock, with her hair combed and makeup perfectly applied (even though she is legally blind) moved into a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.

Aft er many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the eleva-tor, she was provided a visual description of the tiny room, which included the eyelet sheets that had been hung over her window.

I love it, she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight year old presented with a new puppy.

Mrs. Jones, you havent seen the roomjust wait.

Th at doesnt have anything to do with it, she replied. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesnt depend on how the furniture is arranged. I already decided to love it. Its a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice. I can spend the day recounting the diffi culty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift and as long as my eyes open Ill focus on the new day and all the happy memories Ive stored away, just for this time in my life.

She went on to explain. Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what youve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Th ank you for

your part in fi lling my memory bank. I am still depositing.

And with a smile, she said: Remember the fi ve simple rules to be happy:

    1. Free your heart from hatred,2. Free your mind from worries,3. Live simply,4. Give more, and5. Expect less. - TOM
