Seven Church Pilgrimage – Holy Thursday Evening

Ave Maria / St. Agnes One of the ancient customs of Holy Thursday – following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper – is to travel in pilgrimage to pray in churches on this evening of the institution of the Most Holy Eucharist, the beginning of the Sacred Easter Triduum. Father Ed will be leading a Seven Church Pilgrim-age, by bus, on Holy Thursday, March 28, 2013. The bus will depart the Ave Maria Parish parking lot following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper (around 8:20 p.m.) In pilgrimage then, we will travel to other parishes in our area to pray be-fore the Most Blessed Sacrament on this night. You and your families are really encouraged to consider joining in the Seven Church Pilgrimage. Kindly telephone the parish administration center by dialing: 724-239-3591 or 724-632-5858 to reserve seats on the bus. The cost is $5.00 per fam-ily for the bus.

Acknowledgements

Help Needed - St. Thomas Aquinas Last Spring, Father George Moneck met with a commit-tee of parishioners to discuss some updates to Saint Thomas Aquinas Church. It was agreed upon that the church would be painted, Stations of the Cross would be added, and additional materials would be placed around the Crucifix and Stations to accentuate them. Father Mike was in agreement with these changes and additional materials were purchased to update the altar linens. Anyone inter-ested in sewing these items, please contact the administra-tion center. All help is greatly appreciated.

Web-Site Design - Ave Maria

Father Ed is looking for volunteers to assist in the design and implementation of a web-site for Ave Maria Parish. If you have computer skills and are available and interested in taking on this project, please contact Father Ed at the parish administration center by telephone: 724-239-3591.

Parish Assembly for Saint Agnes - St. Agnes A Parish Assembly was held last Sunday at Saint Agnes Parish. Gratitude is expressed to the Pastoral and Finance Council members who offered presentations: Cindy Katruska, Bernie Kurjanowicz, Steve Bobish and Patty Prek-rel as well as to all the members of both councils who con-tinue to dedicate so much prayer, effort and generosity of time as we strive to address important matters of our parish. Steve Bobish and Bernie Kurjanowicz are responsible for the assembly of the Power Point presentation, Lorraine Johnson assembled much of the financial data and Sister Martha oversaw the assembly of all the handouts - thank you! Thanks as well to the 86 people who attended the Par-ish Assembly and for the feedback given. The Pastoral and Finance Council members along with Father Ed will continue to collaborate closely in addressing the matters and provide updates to the parishioners accordingly.

Second Collection - All Parishes Next weekend, March 9/10, 2013 – all parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh are asked to take up a combined second collection to benefit three important projects within the Catholic Church in the United States:

Catholic Home Missions Appeal The Catholic Home Missions Appeal supports Home Missions in places like Appalachia, the Deep South, the Southwest, and the Rocky Mountain states where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate the children in the faith. Home mission parishes face priest shortages, parishioner poverty, unemployment, difficult or isolated terrain, religious hostility and other cir-cumstances that impact their practice of the faith. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps build community within the Church and works for the common good of Catholics in the United States.

National Collection for Black and Indian Missions One of the oldest collections in the Church first taken in 1884, the National Black and Indian Mission Collection as-sists with the evangelization of Black, American Indian, Eskimo and Aleute communities. Poor churches and schools greatly depend on these funds to continue their local programs and pastoral activities.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development The Catholic Campaign for Human Development was established 43 years ago to help people across the nation break the cycle of poverty. CCHD supports low-income people as they work together to advance opportunities, create jobs and improve access to services for the dis-abled. You are invited to be as generous as you are able to this special second collection next weekend, March 9/10, 2013. Thank you!

“The Little Black Books” - Spiritual Reading/

Enrichment - All Parishes

Each of our parishes will be distributing “The Little Black Books” which contain a six minute spiritual reflection for each day of the Lenten season through Holy Week and the Easter Triduum, culminating with Easter Sunday. The spiritual reflections are based in the ancient practice of praying the Scriptures called: lectio divina. The hallmarks of the season of Lent for us as Catholics are: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Please take a copy of “The Little Black Book” and consider using the meditations each day of this season to strengthen your relationship with the Lord, especially in this “Year of Faith.”

Ministry Updates with Protecting God's Children

Saint Thomas Aquinas / St. Joseph

On Wednesday, February 6th, the new altar servers were commissioned and they will be added to the server schedule beginning in March. As for the other liturgical ministries, there will be upcoming meetings so that both current and new ministers will be trained in the proper guidelines for both of our parishes. As we schedule these training sessions, we will make sure that everyone has proper clearance in the "Protecting God's Children" database. Current ministers will have to update their accounts and new ministers will have to enter their information. We would like to thank all those in advance who are volunteering their time and talents to build up our faith communities.

Pastor’s Corner

Inspired by the generosity of our young people and their desire to serve the helpless, I make a plea to all of our parishes to anyone who would like to make a substantial donation to our charity with Children's Hospital. With over three hundred sick young people in Children's Hospital, we have an obligation to bring them the faith, hope, and love of Jesus Christ through a small gesture of love. Not only will the California University Catholic Students raise enough money for every child to get a book bag, water bottle, stuffed

animal, and a party hosted in their honor, but through your private donations, they will also be able to pur-chase larger gifts for the children in need. Please make your donations payable to "St. Thomas Aquinas Church" with a Memo stating "Children's Hospital Charity" and mail them to either administration center. Your donations will make a difference in the lives of our youth locally.

Cal U's Children's Hospital Spring Fling

This Weekend - St. Thomas Aquinas / St. Joseph

For the past few years, the Cal ROCKS Newman Club has done charitable work locally by donating to Children's Hospital. Begun by the inspiration of Eric Trosch, one of the students at California University and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, they created an annual event by which Catholic students donate enough stuffed animals for every child at the hospital. As of last year, the hospital asked Cal ROCKS to host a party for the children and the event has been official called, "The Annual Cal U Spring Fling." Since this is a major charitable event for our area, the students will be speaking at all the Masses concerning this event and will be collecting donations after Mass. Every year our parishes donate on an average of $2,000 that significantly helps the charitable cause. Therefore we ask that you bring your donations to the weekend Masses on March 2nd & 3rd. On behalf of our students, thank you for your generous support and prayers.

Lenten Nullity Presentations - St. Thomas Aquinas The Tribunal office will be providing a 45-minute presen-tation in each of the four Vicariates of the diocese. The pur-pose of the talk is to provide information about the nullity process and help those wanting to begin the process to do so by receiving the initial paperwork at the meeting. The talks are directed toward those who have a desire for adult education regarding this often misunderstood subject. Peo-ple involved in RCIA as teachers or directors may have a special interest in attending this talk. All presentations will begin at 7:00pm and are free. Registration is not required, but to plan for chairs and refreshments please let us know that you are coming at [email protected] or call 412/456-3033. Presentations are scheduled as follows: 2/26 St. Joan of Arc, South Park, Domremy Pavilion; 2/28 St. Mary of the Assumption, Glenshaw, Marian Hall; 3/4 Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Natrona Heights, Patterson Hall; 3/7 St. Thomas Aquinas, California, main Church/1

st

floor; 3/11 St. James, Sewickley, Gathering Space; 3/14 St. Gregory, Zelienople, Blue Room.

MERCY God is mercy. That seems to be

the main message of the reading from

Exodus. God has seen the suffering of the

Israelites and promises mercy and rescue.

From then on, God is to be known as the

God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Paul calls his readers to continue

to grow in the faith. The God who rescued

Israel also rescues them. As beneficiaries of

God’s mercy, Christians must keep on working, doing their part to

become ever more trusting and loving people of God.

The Gospel’s second section is a homey story about

God’s mercy. Against the advice of the land owner, the vinedresser

pleads for mercy—and shows mercy—to allow the poor fig tree

yet another year to become productive. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer during the time of election of a new Pope

O God, eternal shepherd,

who govern your flock with unfailing care,

grant in your boundless fatherly love

a pastor for your Church

who will please you by his holiness

and to us show watchful care.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lenten Parish Mailing

St. Agnes / Ave Maria

Every registered parishioner of Ave Maria Parish and Saint Agnes Parish should have received a letter from Father Ed accompanied by a schedule of the spiritual opportunities and activities at for the Season of Lent 2013. Consider participating in the many spiritual opportunities to deepen the gift of your Catholic faith during this holy season. Also, the Lenten mailing contained information regarding the Annual Parish Share Program Campaign. The Diocese of Pittsburgh has assessed Ave Maria Parish: $42,938.00 for the 2013 Parish Share Campaign and for Saint Agnes Parish: $23,609.00. Each household of both parishes is asked to consider a contribution of $300.00 (initial $50.00, then $25.00 for the next 10 months) toward the Parish Share Program. Thank you for your willing generosity to meet the 2013 Parish Share Campaign goal.

Monetary Collections Affected by Winter Weather - All Parishes

Since December, we have experienced several weekends where we have had a significant winter event with snow, ice and very cold temperatures. On those week-ends all of our parishes have experienced diminished Mass participation and a drop in monetary collections. Our parishes rely upon the weekly monetary collections as an important factor in meeting expenses. If you have been unable to attend Mass due to those inclement weather events, you are invited to drop your monetary envelopes from Sundays missed into the collection basket or mail them to the administration office of your respective parishes. Thank you for your generous support!

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

The owner of the fig tree was impa-tient because the tree did not live up to his expectations. In families there are those who don’t live up to our expecta-tions. Imitate the gardener and give them more time and help. Don’t cut them out of your life. Love asks us to be connected, not productive.
