NOTICE TO CONTRIBUTORS If contributors will study these notes, they can save themselves and the

editors a great deal of unnecessary work in the revision of manuscripts.

1. The Journal of Animal Ecology is published for the British Ecological Society, by the Cambridge University Press, in May and November each year. MSS go to press three months before they are published, and must be submitted well in advance of the date of going to press. 2. All communications should be addressed to: The Editor, Journal of Animal Ecology, Bureau of Animal Population, University Museum, Oxford. 3. Text. MSS should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of the paper. Latin names of genera and species, but nothing else, should be under- lined. Arabic, and not Roman, numerals should be used. For months, use abbreviations (Sept. etc.) not figures. All graphs must have corresponding tables giving the figures on which they are based.

4. Text-figures. Drawings should be made with jet black Indian ink on Bristol board or smooth paper, and must not be folded for postage. Allow for considerable reduction in large figures. Mark all letters and figures lightly in pencil. Graphs should be drawn on paper ruled in pale blue or light grey. 5. Photographs. Good glossy half-plate prints are required for making plates. On the back of each print write the number and author's name, referring the numbers to a separate sheet of titles. Number photos separately from the text- figures. Please send a selection of photographs for the editors to choose from. 6. References. These should follow the usage of the World List of Scientific Periodicals, 1934 edition, except that capitals and not small letters should be used for adjectives in the names of periodicals. All references must be verified from the original source before the MS is sent in; any not personally seen and checked should be marked with an asterisk. Do not underline anything except Latin names of genera and species. Please follow carefully this form of reference:

3. Myers, J. G. (1935). "Epizootics among fishes and reptiles on the Amazon and Orinoco." J. Anim. Ecol. 4: 17-21.

If preferred, author's name and date may be used, instead of reference number; and titles of papers may be omitted if desired.

7. Tables and Latin names. So far as possible put tables on separate sheets. Additions, percentages, etc. should be carefully checked. Latin names of in- vertebrates or of non-British vertebrates should have species authorities when the names are first mentioned in the text, or in the main tables. The Latin names must be verified either from a standard list or by submitting the final MS to the experts who have supplied the identifications. 8. Proofs. Page proofs only will be sent. Authors can contribute towards the economical running of the Journal by sending in MSS in final condition, and by making the minimum alterations to their proof-sheets. 9. Reprints. 50 reprints of each paper are given free to authors. These are sent out about a month after publication. Additional reprints may be purchased: they should be ordered when proofs are returned. Contributors from abroad should send their order with their MS.
