Announcing... the Third Edition of

Specifications and Criteria for Biochemical Compounds

prepared by the Committee on Specifications and Criteria for Biochemical Comipounds of the NRC Division of Chemistry and Chemical Technology Specifications and Criteria for Biochemical Compounds, Third Edition, contains the best information available to date for each class of compounds described, including amino acids, carbohydrates, carotenoids, coenzymes, enzymes, lipids, nucleotides, and porphyrins. The 216-page volume not only provides revised and updated informrnation on the 392 biochemical compounds listed in earlier editions, but it also describes 129 compounds previously unlisted. A section on radioactive compounds appears for the first time in this edition, providing some general comments concerning the use of these materials in biochemical research. A comprehensive, cross- reference index lists both common names and systematic names for each compound described in the volume. If you are concerned with evaluating the quality of biochemical compounds used for research purposes, Specifications and Criteria for Biochemical Compounds, Third Edition, is an essential addition to your professional library. ISBN 0-309-01917-6; 1972, xxi + 216 pages, clothbound, $15.25

Current Reports on

Atmospheric Pollutants

prepared by Committee on Biologic Effects of Atmospheric Pollutants National Research Council

Fluorides ISBN 0-309-01922-2; 1972, xi + 295 pages, paperbound, $6.50 Since the time of the first recorded volcanic eruptions, airborne fluorides in dusts and gases have been a suspected health risk. Today, their presence in the ambient air in various forms and concentrations poses potential hazards to plants, animals, and humans in many localities. A valuable new report, FLUORIDES evaluates the world literature on fluorides and distills the best scientific knowledge available on their biologic effects. Among the topics discussed are the environmental sources and forms of fluoride; its transfer in the environment and the physical, chemical, and biologic changes that occur; and its effects on vegetation, animal, and human health. Recommenda- tions for future research and guidelines for environmental exposure are provided to aid scientists, researchers, air pollution control officials, and others concerned with controlling emissions and determining acceptable levels of fluorides in the atmosphere.

Asbestos: The Need for and Feasibility of Air Pollution Controls ISBN 0-309-01927-3; 1971, vii + 40 pages, paperbound, $1.75 This monograph presents a brief summary of the problems associated with airborne asbestos. It discusses the evidence regarding the pathogenicity of asbestos in man and animals, considers the evidence of human nonoccupational exposure to asbestos, evaluates the evidence regarding health risks associated with various degrees and types of exposure, identifies sources of environmental con- tamination by asbestos, and indicates high-priority areas where research is needed to answer pressing questions about the effects of asbestos on health. Conclusions and recommendations presented in the report discuss the need for emission controls to prevent additional contamination of the environment.

Lead: Airborne Lead in Perspective ISBN 0-309-01941-9; 1972, xii + 330 pages, paperbound, $6.50 Information presented in this comprehensive review will be of great interest to those concerned with the sources, magnitude, and distribution of airborne lead in the ecosystem and with its effects on human health and welfare, on plants, and on domestic and wild

animals. It also presents useful information for clinicians and laboratory workers, describing sampling and analytic methods for lead, recommending procedures for the collection and storage of biologic samples, and summarizing toxicologic data on experimental lead poisoning. For those concerned with controlling emissions and determining acceptable levels of lead in the atmosphere, the report presents recommendations for additional research, calls for extensive monitoring of lead in food, water, and other beverages and suggests ways to institute more meaningful atmospheric monitoring.

Particulate Polycyclic Organic Matter ISIBN 0-309-02027-1; 1972, xiv + 368 pages, paperbound, $7.75 This report attempts to interpret, evaluate, and reconcile the immense amount of information available on polycyclic organic matter, especially that concerning its carcinogenic effects. The in-depth review of the effects of polycyclic organic matter presented in the report places a heavy emphasis on a working hypothesis that a difference exists between urban and rural rates of lung cancer, possibly stemming from community air pollution and possibly attributable to polycyclic hydrocarbons known to be carcinogenic. In an attempt to fully evaluate the hazards imposed on man by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the air, especially as they effect lung cancer, Particulate Polycyclic Organic Matter identifies certain of the various sources of pollution and the types of substances they emit, evaluates the physical and chemical reactivity of these substances in the atmosphere, and describes the existing methods for collecting, separating, detecting, and quantitating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Over 850 references are cited in this valuable report to guide readers to additional literature sources and to support recom- mendations for additional research.
