IDJ. MI YOUNG. PREFACE.

TirIS little Work has been prepared with a view to furnish Schools and Families with a complete set of Juvenile Compositions suitable for all circumstailces. The Poetry has been written or s-:lected with the greatest care: it treats of sacred aTnd miral objects, and calls especially the attention of the young to the beautits of Nature.

The Music lias been adapted to juvenile voices, and has almost exclusively been written for the present work, the Canons excepted; these latter, as well as the Imitations and Fugues, have been added as useful and instructive singing exercises. J. M.

Reduced Price, 8d. PR. MAINZER'S FIFTY MELODIES FOR CHIL- L DREN.-Adapted for the use of Schools and Families.

PREFACE. WE cannot better explain our aim in working for the diffusion of

Musical Instruction, than by presenting this little book to the Teachers of Schools. We are aware that nothing is more difficult to write than bouks for children. In preparing this, we had three principal points in view:-

1st. To give to our little tunes such a compass that youthful and uncultivated voices canl reach the extreme notes without effort.

2nd. To preseint the young witll poetical sentiments within the reacli of their intelligence.

3rd. To make these sentiments worthy to be kept in memory, so as to be used, in many circumstances of life, as guides of conduct and means of consolation.

Children are fond of singing. and are now everywhere instructed in that art. Let us, therefore, fiil their mouths and their hearts with melody of a simple and elevating kind; let us call tleir attention to the beauties of Nature, and thus prepare them to appreciate better the beauties of the more abstract moral world.

Let it be well understood that these tunies are written for the school, and not for the church. From the school, children may bring them home, sing them in the street, in the field, or at the fireside. Grown-up persons may thus learn from children to sing what is worthy of their voice and their memory; and may learn to forget songs of other descriptions. We have shown this little book, before its publication, to persons who have made the instruction of youth the study of their lives, and who, after the most serious examination of it, have pronounced it deserving to be found in the hands of all children ; it is now, therefore, presented to them, in full confidence that it will conduce to their bensefit.

May it be, then, my young friends, your guide and companion; may these little tunes now instruct and now amuse you; may they teacli you obedience and piety, and fill your hearts with joy and cheerfulness. May you learn, through them, to respect your school and your home, your young friends and yourselves; and, to express all my wishes in one wold, may they make you better while they make you happier. THE AUTHOR.

The unanimous opinion of musical judges haviing pronounced the Symphonies and Accompaniments of Sir John Stevenson, originally allied to the " Jrish Melodies," both technically incorrect aind characteristically inappropriate, the publisher has great pleasure in anntouncing that Mr. Ml. W. BALPE has re-arranged the whole of them expressly for tllis edition, which is also supplied with an explanatory and historical preface (which may be had gratis). With these advantages, combined with a careful revision both of the musical notes and the poetical text, and the whole of the words being set to the music, the publisher confidently recommends his edition of " Moore's Irish Melodies" to the public, as one tlhat may challenge competition as the most perfect extant.
