directed towards the study and practice of Music, it has been thought that a new edition of SIR JOHN HAWKINS'S valuable HISTORY OF MUSIC would prove peculiarly ac- ceptable, as being by far the best history of the art extant. The large subject of a History of Music, embracing heterogeneous matter, and the result of wide research, makes it a storehouse to which a defi- nite clue is required to give ready access.
