An Important New Work for Law Schools and Law Students.

THE ELEMENTS OF THE LAW

OF

N[6011A0[[ INSTRUM[NIS BY

Hon. JOHN W. DANIELp Author of "dDaniel on Negotiable Instruments,"

AND

Hon. CHARLES A. DOUGLASS, of the Bar of the District of Columbia, and Professor of the Law of Nego-

tiable Instruments in Georgetown University of Washington, D. C.

Price In law canvas $3.00 Net, or $3.25 delivered; in sheep $3.50 Not, or $3.75 delivered.

This work is designed primarily for the use of law students and in- structors in law schools. It is based upon the well known and popular work of "Daniel on Negotiable Instruments," and the lectures upon the subject by Professor Douglass after eight years' experience as instructor in the law of Negotiable Instruments in the law school of the George- town University of Washington, D. C.

So much of the standard work by Senator Daniel as would be appro- priate to a student's book has been used, but the subject matter has been re-arranged and transposed, and new matter added. Everything has been done that seemed to the authors necessary to make the sub- ject both intelligible and attractive.

Especial care has been taken to regulate and apportion the space de- voted to the many subjects as their relative importance, from the stand- point of the student, requires. It is believed that in this respect this work differs materially from, and is superior to most, if not all, other students' book on this subject'.

One of the special features of the book is the orderly and logical se- quence of discussion. The work is divided into five books, and the sub- ject taken up in logical and chronological order. As the system and classification constitute nearly half of the battle with the law student in mastering any given subject, unusual attention has been given to this in the structure and arrangement of this new book.

The full text of the important new statute, "The Negotiable Instru- ments Law," which has become law in nineteen States, and also in the Territory of Arizona and District of Columbia, is given in an Appendix.

MODERN ELOQUENCE

What is the secret of a great lawyer's power?

Is it learning in the Law? Is it com- manding presence? Charming personality? Many and influential friends? Political affili- ations ?

The unthinking layman might answer "yes," but the lawyer knows that these are not, to begin with, essentials. He knows a score of instances where most, if not all, of these qualifications were absent, until, by sheer force of innate greatness, they were required. He knows that, in law as in every relation and responsibility in life, it is the little things and the alertness to see and take advantage of them that oftenest turns the tide of a great case, and changes a seem- ingly inevitable defeat into a great victory.

The lawyer who is ever ready with a quotation, a precedent, a simile, or a meta- phor, who weaves into the fabric of his argu- ment brilliant flowers of wit, with the som- bre leaves and ashes of pathos; the one who is human because he feels humanity in all its intensity, and communicates his feelings to his hearers-the man of the world in the

THOMAS B. REED, Editor in Chief deep, broad, fullest sense; the man who has -_________________ _ |had inspiring contact with great minds, and

has come to acquire the spirit of their inspir- ation and achievement; the man whose own mind is prepared for instant and true action through familiarity with great minds on great questions-he it is who has in him the secret-if it be a s ecret-of success.

Nowhere, in the compass of one set of books-the result of the editorial labors of one set of men of affairs-is there so much food for thought and so much inspiration

as in Modern Eloquence, a library of the best after-dinner speeches, classic and pop- ular lectures, famous addresses, reminiscence, anecdotes, repartee, story, and

illustration. Modern Eloquence is an assemblage of gems of expressed thought that

have charmed the brightest intellects of this the greatest of centuries; lectures that have thrilled vast intellectual assemblies in the centres of thought; after-

dinner speeches that have broadened the human heart and mind; eulogies that have melted prejudice, banished ill-feeling, made memories sacred;

addresses stimulative of thought, desire, and ambition; brilliant bits of rZ 93] humor, wit, and repartee; stories fixing local color and human pathos

I and interest as if on canvas. It is the essence of all noteworthy speech INQUIRY P of a hundred years-itself the expression of all noteworthy action. COUPON ^' \Prefixed to the several volumes are introductory articles-"The
