Learning Sequence and Patterns In Music Revised Edition by Edwin E. Gordon

A book of information and ideas about music learning theory - pre-school through college. An explication of how we efficiently and appropriately learn when we learn music. Beginning with the development of aural and per- formance skiHs, including both tonal and rhythm experiences, the sequential steps of music learning are explained through discus- sions of music literacy, generalization, creativity, and improvisa- tional skills. Tonal and rhythm patterns, the fundamental ele- ments of music, are classified according to content learning se- quence in terms of how they interact with skills learning se- quence. Information and ideas in the book apply to students of all ages regardless of their level of music aptitudes or achievement. Through an understanding of learning sequence, favored methods and techniques become viable pedagogical procedures. Cur- riculum development, individual musical differences, comparative techniques, and measurement and evaluation are discussed and effectively applied in context.

NO IION Books that Live in Music"

Choral Music A Norton Historical Anthology

Edited by RAY ROBINSON This anthology compiled by the president of the Westminster Choir College offers a survey of music for the choral medium from the fourteenth century to the present. This is not a compendium of old favorites, but a guide to the development of the choral idiom in all its evolutionary complexity. The editor's objectives are to document stylistic development from the late Middle Ages to the twentieth century, to illustrate the major categories of choral composition in different periods, and to provide a convenient library of works by major composers in a convenient format. $29.95

Medieval Music By RICHARD H. HOPPIN

This is the first volume in the Norton Introduction to Music History Series, a series in which outstanding musicologists survey the music of a specific period, its major composers, and the forces that influenced and helped shape their music. Here, Professor Hoppin ranges from earliest chant of the Roman Church to polyphony of the early fifteenth century. Written for the nonspecialist, it is richly illustrated and replete with music examples. $9.95

Anthology of Medieval Music

Edited by RICHARD H. HOPPIN Designed to accompany MEDIEVAL MUSIC, this volume will also provide a wel- come addition to the heretofore severely limited repertoire of medieval pieces available in contemporary notation. The editor has freshly transcribed every one of the seventy-one works, and all have been newly engraved for this collection. Many of the works have never been available in a modem edition, and all are presented in their entirety. $12.95

WAGNER'S RIENZI A Reappraisal Based on a Study of the Sketches and Drafts JOHN DEATHRIDGE. Although more books have been written about Richard Wagner than about any other composer, surprisingly little atten- tion has been paid to his sketches and drafts, and to the importance they played in his method of composition. By tracing the development of one of Wagner's operas, Rienzi, from the initial drafts of the libretto to the compo- sition of the music, John Deathridge provides a detailed picture of Wagner's working methods and at the same time clarifies the exceptionally confused history of the work. This study will help to establish Rienzi as an important work in the Wagner canon. (Oxford Monographs on Music) 1978 220 pp.; plates; musical text $29.00

DELIUS A Life in Pictures LIONEL CARLEY and ROBERT THRELFALL. Delius lived a life of extraordi- nary variety-he grew up in Bradford, as a young man he managed an orange grove in Florida, in Paris he was a friend of the post-Impressionists and of Grieg and Beecham, and his last years were spent blind and aloof in Grez-sur-Loing. The rich melancholy of his music, as popular today as ever, drew much of its character from the places which influenced him. This pictorial biography adds a new dimension to the appreciation of Delius and will be indispensable to all lovers of his music and of the twentieth-century musical world. 1978 104 pp.; numerous illus. (9 in color) $16.00

Cone; on sketches for Op. 131 by Robert Winter; on Beethoven and his nephew by Maynard Solomon; and on Tovey's Beethoven by Joseph Kerman. 1978 208 pp.; 12 plates $22.75 Prices are subject to change.

AN INDEX TO EARLY MUSIC

IN SELECTED ANTHOLOGtES

by Ruth B. Hilton

Music Librarian, New York University

The 1633 examples here indexed cover the period from antiquity to the end of the Baroque. They are drawn from 19 widely available anthologies of general scope - Schering, the Historical Anthology of Music, the Parrish and Kamien antholo- gies, and others published up to the end of 1977.

Entry is by composer or title. Added titles refer to main entries, and a separate subject index is provided. For example, the entry gives full name and dates, uniform title, caption title, type of work, country of origin, date of composition or of first publication, performing medium, texts, thematic-catalog number, and other information. Dates are emended and cor- rections noted as appropriate in view of recent research. Often the information serves to identify pieces inadequately described in the anthologies themselves.

Although intended primarily for students, teachers, and librarians, this index may also be useful to performers of early music. Multiple copies of works may be located quickly, as may various settings of tunes and texts, while the subject listing provides access to many works of a given kind.
