A YEAR OF RENEWAL ~ TO RESTORE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

AUGUST 28, 2011 TAKE UP YOUR CROSS AND SEEK STRENGTH IN THE LORD

The Scriptures at a Glance: First Reading: Jeremiah 20: 7-9 Jeremiah cries out in anguish that God has brought him derision and reproach.

Second Reading: Romans 12: 1-2 Paul calls to be transformed by the renewal of the mind and to discern what is the will of God.

The Gospel: Matthew 16: 21-27 We are to take up the cross and to follow the Lord. A Year of Renewal: Last Sunday, we began a "Year of Renewal" on the Feast of Saint Pius X, our patron. The theme of this renewal is "to restore all things in Christ." As a Community of Faith, we are each called to look within ourselves and to ask how we can better reflect Christ in our own lives and bring about what Paul today calls, a "renewal of our minds," in order to better discern the will of God for each of us. A personal renewal becomes the basis for a communal renewal. A personal renewal calls each of us to ask how we can better conform to Christ and together work to build our parish for the future. This means looking to the common good and beyond our own preferences alone and to see the bigger picture beyond our own group of friends and our own areas of involvement in our Community of Faith. It calls for prayer, discernment and dialogue guided in the Holy Spirit. In each of our areas of involvement in parish life and in all the areas of our parish life, we seek renewal and a spirit of community building and mutual interaction in order to strengthen each of the parts for the good of the whole and to strengthen our mission "to restore all things in Christ." As we renew our worship space and as we renew our Spirit we work together and we pray together that we might better serve others together. This will help us to build our future as we discern our needs and look realistically to what is possible within the means and the spirit of the wonderful Community of Faith.

Some Reflections on the Scriptures by Father Tom: In everyone’s life, without exception, there will always be a cross and even crosses. To follow Christ is a challenge to all of us and to keep the faith and have the courage needed under duress is truly one of the greatest challenges. Today Jeremiah expresses this frustration with God. Is he being duped? Why is what he is facing such a frustrating expense for him. He speaks the word of God and gets beaten down and rejected. How can this be? Had God led him on? He wants to give up and yet the word burns in his heart and he cannot give in to his impulses. Most of us can identify with this at the times in our lives when we wonder if practicing and sharing our faith is really worth it. Is God really there? We may feel duped and even resentful. It is a challenge to our faith and even to our very being. It is here that we must discern the will of God and resolve to follow his will no matter where it leads. This is the cross. This is trying to follow the Lord, even in times of disappointment, rejection, and pain. To pick up the cross requires an ever deepening faith and trust. Despite our desire to give up and to give in, we embrace hope and cry out for the strength to persevere. In the end, the center of our lives must not be ourselves but the Christ who is within us, giving up our lives in exchange for life in him. Are we willing to do so? This is a core question during this year of renewal and each day of our lives.

Thank You: A special thanks for your kind comments on our Saint Pius X Festival. As we begin a year of spiritual renewal, we will emphasize praying together, community building, working together, discerning together, and thereby, building our future as we renew our spirit and renew our worship space. Many of you expressed your excitement. Our hope is to build on this enthusiasm as we move ahead. This Year of Renewal is placed under the patronage of Saint Pius X and Mary Immaculate Queen. Many thanks to Leanne Newman and the team of volunteers who made the Friendship Sunday possible with baking, serving, greeting and just being there. That is genuine "Pride in Pius."

Thank You: We also thank John Matyasik and Betty Kramer for their work in responding to everyone's input and answering questions. This has been a great labor of love for us as we work to make dreams a reality and as we look to our future development of a new facility, meeting our changing needs and current economic climate. Thank you for all your efforts on our behalf.

Thank You….: Thank you to Dan Flaherty for his great artistic rendering of Jesus with the Children on the school entrance wall at the Westmore Entrance of Church. Check it out! New Missal: We will soon begin our preparations for the transition to the New Roman Missal and Ryan is currently working with his committee to implement the musical settings which we will begin in September. There will be three new Masses and these incorporate the changes in texts for the various parts of the Mass. This will be a great undertaking and we hope to make these changes as smoothly as possible. It will be a challenge for all of us and will require patience and understanding. First Saturday Mass: Don't forget the First Saturday Mass on Saturday, September 3, at 8:30 am. This is also the Labor Day Weekend. The Labor Day Mass will be a Mass for the Blessing of Human Labor. Mass will be at 8:30 am, the usual time. +Wishing you the blessings of the Year of Renewal

Communion and the Concluding Rites On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman Missal. This week, we explore Communion and the Concluding Rites. Our great prayer of praise and thanksgiving leads through the Lord’s

Prayer, our petition for daily bread, into the action of Communion. We sing together even as we rise and move forward in procession to the altar. We must move to receive Communion because the Eucharist is transformative—it demands action of us, internal as well as external. We do not receive the sacrament in silence, but with a dialogue that is a profession of faith: “The Body of Christ.” “Amen.” “The Blood of Christ.” “Amen.” Our “Amen” is also a prayer that we may become what we receive, the Body of Christ, living and active in the world. So it makes sense that after Communion we are dismissed—not just let out, but sent forth with a mission “to announce the gospel of the Lord.” This leave-taking is joined to a blessing, a prayer for God’s continuing protection as we go out on our way. PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS

The pro-life movement is showing gains. In the mid 1990s 56% of Americans were pro-choice (or pro-abortion) and 33% were pro-life. In 2011, according to a recent Gallup Poll, 47% of Americans identified themselves as pro-life while only 45% identified themselves as pro- choice (or pro-abortion). After nearly two decades, almost half of Americans believe that abortion is morally wrong. Furthermore, 87% of Americans now feel that the mother should be informed of the risks and side effects of having an abortion, a step which is still not included in most abortion cases. While this is good news, we cannot rest. The United States is still averaging 1,200,000 abortions every year. We must get this number down to zero. We cannot give up. God is in charge. Prayer changes things, and a battle against truth cannot be sustained.

Last week Jesus asked us, “But who do YOU say that I am?” Most likely you answered as Peter did and said “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This week Jesus gives us more information about the implications of answering that question.

It is very natural for us to think that we are followers of Christ, since we have been baptized, confirmed, regularly attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, say our prayers before we go to bed, and contribute to the support of our church. We may even believe that because we do these things, and God can see that we are being “good,” that we are close to God. This closeness to God, we reason, should make our life a warm, cozy experience free from troubles, tribulations and anxiety. However, if we ponder what we heard in today’s readings, we are reminded that being close to God can also be wearying, consuming, costly, feel like a burning fire in our heart, or like a thirst that makes us parched and lifeless. We may even be experiencing some of the evils of the world, like cancer, death of a loved one, unemployment, an unloving spouse, a rebellious child or a mean, rotten neighbor, and wonder how can a good God allow this to happen. This does not seem at all fair. Jesus offers us some insight as He Himself tells us in the gospel “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Follow Him? Follow Him where? He tells us that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer greatly, be killed and on the third day, rise again. So, if we wish to follow Him we too must go to Jerusalem, suffer greatly, be killed and on the third day, rise again. Do we still want to follow Him? Do we trust Him enough to follow Him? Do we still want to say “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God?” Does following Him to Jerusalem mean to us, what it meant to Him? A place made up of pain, suffering and death. Are we really willing to suffer greatly and be killed? Are we really willing to “take up our cross?” What is that cross anyway? We have a tendency to think of those very trying and challenging people we have to live with or work with as our “cross.” We may think that the troubled teenager, the unfaithful spouse, or the lying relative is our “cross.” We may think that our disability, which causes us to walk slow, or be in a wheelchair, or requires us to depend on someone else to help us with those personal things we use to do on our own is our “cross.” We may think that our over-drinking, or over-working, or over-eating is our “cross.” These are the outward challenges, or crosses, that complicate our lives and take us away from the cozy, comfortable life that we may think we deserve for being His follower. Yet, what Jesus is asking of us in today’s gospel is that we become a follower of His on the inside. He is asking us to accept and embrace the totality of our life and look at that as our “cross.” Everything we do should be done as His followers. All aspects of our life from the first breath to the last should be our “cross” as far as Jesus is concerned. So, if we can still say “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and embrace the “cross” that is our life, then, in the words of St. Paul, we can “become a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” This ought to be our primary goal. Deacon Tom

RENEWING OUR WORSHIP SPACE — UPDATE

FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION Our FF program has one more date for registering for the 2011-2012 school year: Monday, August 29, from 6-7 pm in the Parish Office. What a great opportunity to keep the faith alive and growing in your children. Any questions, call the FF office at 630-627-1551 for more information. We are still in need of catechists/aides for our FF program. If you feel the calling to share of your time and of your faith with the young children of our parish…..we need YOU! For more information and to find out how YOU can be a part of this wonderful opportunity, call our FF office at 630-627-1551.

Hello again- here are a few more answers to your questions about the renewal of our worship space. • With new flooring, is the church going to be “looped” for hearing impaired? The questioner probably is referring either to

a cluster (monophonic) or a surround (stereophonic) system. We will address our sound system in the next phase of development. Our basic project includes rebuilding our sanctuary, replacing our pews, and replacing our flooring. Following the completion of the basic project and with adequate funding, we will begin to enhance other features of our worship space including a new entrance for the handicapped, rebuilding the stained glass windows, and improving our sound system.

• How much will it cost? Will we know how much the final cost will be? As stated in the pamphlet that was mailed to all

parish families, the cost of the basic project is estimated to be $278,033. This estimate was based on bids received from diocesan-approved vendors and includes a Project Management charge. After the basic project has been completed, we will publish an accounting of the total cost. A breakdown of estimated costs follows.

Redesign and Rebuild Sanctuary Platform and Stairs $ 54,811 Replace Flooring 84,089 Replace Pews and Kneelers 119,133 Project Management 20,000 Total $278,033

• I have been to several new churches and they do not have kneelers any more. Though this was the case for several years,

the diocese now mandates that kneelers must be provided. • What will happen to the stations which parishioners paid to have re-framed? They will remain in place as they are now.

No change is planned. Long Term Project What about the Parish Center? Will it ever be built? Yes, a Parish Center will be built! But not right now. The Master Plan that included a Parish Center was developed more than 5 years ago. Since that time our needs have changed as has the economy. The expansion of our school along with the developing needs of our parish have led us to believe that we should build a more comprehensive Parish Center than that originally proposed. A Parish Center designed for the long term is estimated to cost between three and four million dollars. An undertaking of this magnitude is not reasonable at this time, in this economic climate. But a Parish Center is the focus of any long range plan that will serve our faith community well into the future. Thanks for your questions and comments. We have done our best to respond to them, however, several remain unanswered because it was difficult to read them. If you have questions of a meaningful nature, please contact the Parish Office by calling 630-627-4526 or via e-mail: [email protected]. We appreciate your words of encouragement and the support of many generous parishioners.

SPRED MEETING Do we let fear and apprehension keep us from a ministry? Sometimes that happens with Spred because the people we welcome are those with a developmental or intellectual disability or learning problem. Did you know that people with these challenges are loving, giving, and precious gifts to us. What you see is what you get. They have no masks as we sometimes can put on. They enjoy life as we enjoy life. They need a support system to grow in their faith and Spred provides this for them and their families. Spred is such a different program. It is not like religious education or a teacher/student/classroom model of faith sharing. It is a small faith sharing group where people come to know each other through sharing ordinary life experiences and finding God within everyday life. Training is provided for all who volunteer. There will be a Spred Information Night for parents and interested men and women on Monday, August 29, 7:00 p.m., in the Wagner Room hosted by Jackie Stawiarski, our Spred chairperson. Come and seek more information and then make your own decision.
