Treasures From Our Tradition Bynow,the irstChristmascarolsareheardinthehome,butusuallynotyetinchurch.Whatisa“carol”anyway?Originally,acarolwasanykindofcommunalsongsungatafestivalsuchasaharvest.Bythethirteenthcenturyorso,carolswereassociatedwithhouseholdcelebrations.“Carol”comesfromtheOldFrenchcarula,meaningacirculardance.Carolsweren’tforchurch,sincethelanguageofliturgywasLatinandthecarolswereinthecommonlanguage.Theircharacteristicsoundcomesfrommedie-valchordpatterns,andtheyoftenhavestrongrefrainsforeveryonetosing.EveninthechurchesoftheReformation,carolsdidn’tmakeitintochurchservicesuntilthe1870sorso,sincetherewasaprefer-enceforpsalms.Anglicansresistedpopularcarols;mostofourbelovedcarolscameviatheMethodists,anoffshootoftheChurchofEngland.TheCatholicChurchgenerallydidn’tadmitcarolstoliturgyeither,butwedidn’tmakelawsagainstthem. Wearetoldthatthebelovedcarol“SilentNight”comesfromCatholicAustriaandaharriedparishmusicdirector.JosephMohr,thepriestofSt.NicholasinOberndorf,hadwrittenthewordsin1816,butofferedthemtohismusicdirector,FranzGruber,whenthechurch’sorganbroke.MohraskedhimtowriteamelodythatcouldbeplayedonguitarasapreludetoMass.Gruber inishedthetunejusthoursbeforemidnightMassin1818.Thepeoplewereshockedtohearaguitarinchurch,butwerecharmedbythesweetlullaby.Thechurchwassweptawaybya loodinthe1990sandthevillagelaterrelocated,butthetownspeoplehavesetupthe“SilentNightMemorialChapel”atthesite.Todaythecarolisinprintinsomethreehundredlanguages.Howwonderfulthatthepipeorganbrokeonthatnight!—Rev.JamesField,Copyright©J.S.PaluchCo.
