PASTORAL MINISTER PARISH & COMMUNITY

Bearing Witness A couple of years ago I was watching a playoff game on TV between the Vikings and the New Orleans Saints. The Saints were ahead with moments left and we were simply waiting for the Vikings to lose the game. Then the Minneapolis Miracle happened and the unthinkable occurred. Steffon Diggs caught a tightrope pass on the sidelines while a Saint’s player missed the tackle. Diggs ran it in for the touchdown as time expires giving the Vikings the win. The entire stadium erupted as every fan rose to their feet and celebrated. Each of us watching on TV did the same. It was one of the most amazing sports moments I’ve ever witnessed! For the next several days, I listened to and watched people relive that moment. There were high fives, people putting their hands up to catch the ball as if they were is Steffon Diggs. They spoke with enthusiasm about the marvels that they witnessed. Today’s Gospel we hear about one of the marvels of Jesus. There are 10 lepers who beg for Jesus to have pity on them. Jesus sends them to the priests and along the way, they are healed. One of them returns and Jesus responds to him saying, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Undoubtedly the remaining 9 seem a little ungrateful. But there is an interesting dynamic playing out that is applicable for you and me beyond being grateful. The process could be summarized like this: There is the recognition of a deep need, Jesus responds to that need, thanks is offered and then Jesus sends him out. This is the exact dynamic of the Mass. We come acknowledging our need for forgiveness, Jesus responds to that need by the offering of Himself on the altar to the Father, we give thanks in the Eucharist (which means thanksgiving), and then we are sent to “glorify the Lord by our life.” And just as what happens after the story of the leper is as important as what happens during it, so it is with you and me. The life of the Christian is one in which we bear witness to the marvels of our God. We are sent out. And like those who spoke about the amazing football catch, when we are a witness of God’s acts people take note. What does this look like? How can we be a witness? Take for instance the inevitable Monday morning question we all encounter, whether we are a student or at work—what did you do this weekend? Why not respond that you prayed at Mass? It might jumpstart a whole conversation. Or, when asked about what our goals are, why not share that we ultimately desire to go to heaven? Yes, the Lord has responded to our needs, and being grateful is necessary. But it is also something marvelous and worth bearing witness to. Peace, Eric

Doughnuts This Sunday This weekend the Saint John’s Pastoral Council will be serving doughnuts and coffee (or juice) in the Gathering Space following the 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM Masses. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy some fellowship time!

Fall Festival 2019 Recap On behalf of the Fall Festival Committee, I would like to extend a sincere "thank you" to all the parishioners who helped make our Fall Festival a huge success through their unstinting hard work and/or attendance. This year we made a special effort to engage our school by merging the festival with the school marathon. With the help of our principal, Dan Hurley, and his dedicated staff of teachers, we've begun the process of bringing our church and school closer together. Of special note was the enormous help provided by several of our church organizations, including the Men's Club, Watchmen and Ste. Anne's. Thank You, one and all! We will soon be holding a meeting to discuss lessons learned and to begin the planning process for next year. Any feedback from church and school members would be greatly appreciated. The easiest method for providing feedback would be to drop an email to Gail Johnson at [email protected]. Let's continue to make this a parish that not only Prays together, but Plays together!

~Gail Johnson, Fall Festival Chairperson

Rosary Coast-to-Coast We are being called to help turn our country back towards God. Through prayer we can change hearts, change families, change our communities and change our country. Americans across the Country are invited to pray the Rosary for our nation. Rosary Coast-to-Coast will take place simultaneously across the nation next Sunday, October 13 at 3 PM central. We will gather in the Church at 2:30, pray the Rosary and join in a Eucharistic Procession around Saint John’s church. Questions? Contact Eric Cooley, pastoral minister, in the parish office.

Stewardship is the grateful and loving response of a disciple of Jesus for the blessings, material and spiritual, we have received from a generous God. We discover that in giving of ourselves we do not squander love and life, but gain it back in abundance here and hereafter.

Pastoral Council News: Our 2019/2020 Pastoral Council is working hard to make decisions God’s way in the school of the Holy Spirit, through prayer and discernment. Along with our pastor, Father Tom Balluff, the members are: Craig Conrad, Joan Czaia, Jim DeBilzan, Paul Dinndorf, Jim Golding, Craig Johnson, Don Kellett, Tom Lehmann, Dan McGrath, Mary Pat Merabella, Dale Oden, and Mark York. The Pastoral Council meets monthly, hearing from liaisons of all the various committees serving our community, which include the Finance Council, Faith Formation and Adult Faith Program, Mary House and Cemetery, Liturgy, St. John the Evangelist School, Lay Advisory Board, Christian Services and Health, Culture of Life, Befriender and Pastoral Care Ministry, and Welcoming Committee.

Important Update about Church Access After Hours In our continuing effort to find cost savings and balance our budget, we've installed an electronic door with automatic locks, which allows for an efficiency in night contract custodial staffing saving $19,000 this year and $24,000/year in future years. All doors will lock after business hours (approximately 4:30 p.m. most weekdays). There will be one door that remains unlocked until 9 p.m. every weekday: The handicap-accessible door closest to the main parking lot coming into the Gathering Space (as you're entering from the main lot, the one furthest to your left).

What does this mean for you? If you have a Committee Meeting or Event at the church that

begins after 4:30 p.m., you will need to enter the building

through this Gathering Space door. Thanks much for your

continued help and support of Saint John's.
