Pastor’s Corner

I am writing this from beautiful Santa Barba-ra, where I am spending five days at Saint Mary's Seminary, in a beautiful setting with a magnificent view of the ocean! Yes, I did come here to pray, and I am doing a lot of that, but I am also here as the Spiritual Director for 77 Catholic high school youth who are here this week for a program called CLI - Christian Leadership Institute. These young people were selected by their Pastors and Youth Ministers to come here to meet other young Catholic leaders and to learn more about Community Building, Leadership Styles, Communi-cation, Planning Skills, and Group Dynamics. My role here is to serve as their Spiritual Director by cel-ebrating the daily Masses, absolving their sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and being a listening ear for those who are going through adolescent strug-gles and challenges. Sometimes young people will candidly share their thoughts with a priest, knowing that everything they say is held in confidence and that they will be welcomed with the message of God's unconditional love! I have found the workshops to be very help-ful, particularly in the area of Group Dynamics. As a Pastor I find that one-on-one conversations can be very comfortable and enriching, but a group of peo-ple with various agendas and issues can present a bit of a challenge. The key is listening to each person, recognizing their feelings, acknowledging their ide-as, and then making a decision - even one that may not be what some people were hoping for. The key is to explain to each person that while you heard and understood their ideas, there are other ways of ap-proaching the situation that might be better in the long run. As long as people feel that they have been heard and respected, you have accomplished the goal of Group Dynamics. While I am here I am taking time to pray for each of the 77 young people who are participating in this program. And I am praying for all of our youth, that they will recognize God's love in their lives and the many blessings that God bestows on each of us. May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways,

Father Paul

FROM OUR PASTOR

Padre Paul

SPIRITUAL LIFE

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a couple will receive some advice about a “unity candle.” They need one, they are told (at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done. Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been officially part of our liturgy, and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are two smaller candles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom the understand-ing. Why, then, are those smaller candles extinguished? It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy, introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally, it’s been experienced as a “photo opportunity” rather than a genuine liturgical ritual. The “unity candle,” a recent invention rather than an authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite, and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disappear from view.

Helping children problem solve through communication Often the easiest response to complicated conversations is a generic one, but these moments can be opportunities to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social activities, you might respond with a question: “Do you think there is any-thing you can do help him/her feel more included?” Or if your child comes to you for money for social activities, instead of offering a solution, you might prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child find a solution to an immediate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For complete VIRTUS® Article and more communication tips email: [email protected]

For particular help you may call Suzanne Healy, director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 or Helene Hickey at 310-821-6612.

FEEDING THE WORLD With today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these de-scribe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Fa-ther of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of du-plicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gen-tleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day.
