From the Pastor

Peace be with you.

This is the eighth and last piece in my summer series. It began with explaining some parts of the Mass, but it morphed into a reflec on on faith in the Eucharist. A er all, this is the Year of the Eucharist, so I guess this is a natural progression. Today, I wanted to write about part of my own growth in faith (which is not near complete). The premise of the last column was that all of us need mul ple conversions to become closer and closer to fidelity to Christ.

I was very lucky, as my own personal conversion began when I was very young. It all began with my parents’ faith, and it grew as I felt a call to the priesthood, like my uncle who was a priest. I went to Boston College and a ended Mass every day, and I witnessed the faith of the Jesuit priests. My faith grew in seminary when I had the privilege to study theology, but also through Spiritual direc on and finding friends who had the same passion for Christ that I could walk with. It grew immeasurably as I began to celebrate Mass as a priest and through the faith of the people of my parishes. Later, I was sent to Rome for four years, where I encountered the universal Church, and my understanding and faith in the Church expanded. When I came home, I had the task of working in the midst of the sexual abuse crisis as a Canon Lawyer, and I had to recommitment myself in light of all I saw and witnessed. I found out in a real way what Jesus said to Peter, “…the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it!” (Ma 16:18) My faith has also grown greater through the faith of this parish, as it is such a privilege to be your pastor and witness your faith.

Faith is not magical. It doesn’t usually just hit us out of the blue. It builds as we make a commitment to Christ. My own journey grew as I made commitments – first, as a boy to try to be a good kid; then, as I commi ed to pray every day; then, as I commi ed to read the Bible every day; then, as I commi ed to live my life as if I were preparing for priesthood; then, as I commi ed to a ending Mass every day; then, as I gave my life completely to God as a seminarian and later as a priest. My love for God and the Eucharist grew not suddenly, but gradually. I always tried to follow through on what I pledged to God, and God has blessed me more than I can say, and God has fed me with His Body and Blood.

There is a powerful prayer from Mark 9:23-24: And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible to him who believes.”

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe, help my unbelief!”

It is the prayer of Jesus for us and us for Jesus. Take the me to meditate on that whole passage from Mark, chapter 9. It is a threshold reading -- meaning it shows a man who is on the verge of taking a leap of faith. Each of us is at a different stage of our journey of faith. I urge you to listen to and pray with these two verses and then make a commitment to Christ. In the journey of that commitment, your faith will grow not suddenly, but like the wheat in the fields. Someday, you will recognize your personal journey with Jesus is the most important rela onship in your life and enhances all your other rela onships. You will be amazed by your own faith and long to be with Jesus in the Eucharist in this world and in Heaven in the next.

Blessings on you and your families,

Bishop Mark

Mass Intentions

Voca on Crucifix is a special crucifix that travels from family to family to inspire prayers for voca ons to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life.

We have suspended the ministry for the me being. We ask everyone to please pray for voca ons to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life.

We have provided a prayer below.

Prayer for Voca ons to the Priesthood

Lord Jesus Christ, you share your saving work with all your brothers and sisters by their bap smal consecra on. But you call some to be ordained priests or deacons to make you visible in a special way, to proclaim your Good News, to celebrate your saving love in the Eucharist and other sacraments, to lead and encourage your people in their pilgrimage to the Kingdom. May you awaken a generous response in the hearts of those whom you are calling to this work, for the building up of your Church. May parents teach their children the need and responsibility of this voca on. Amen

Please pray for the repose of the souls of all our deceased relatives, friends,

and parishioners

For Daily Mass (9 AM, Mon-Sat) Only Please park in the lot by the rectory and enter through the side door. Don’t forget to wear a mask. Please sit in pews

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Every once in a while, I am called

upon by my siblings to baby-sit for a few hours. It usually means some indoor games, a movie or doing some homework. During a game of checkers, I ‘overlooked’ a few obvious moves and she gleefully took advantage of my lapse in judgment. A er she had won, she asked, “Are you that dumb or did I really win?” No fooling that girl. I had to return to my winning ways! Some mes we do things that make us ask ourselves if we really mean to do what we did, especially things that directly contradict our Chris an values and ideals. We must see the world with the mind and heart of Jesus, always advancing the Gospel and invi ng others to faith. It is not always easy to be faithful, nor is it without risk. However, the cross is not a convenient trinket we carry, but the mark of a life dedicated to the person and message of Jesus. There is nothing dumb about that!
