Sunday Bulletin – Third Sunday of Lent – March 24th, 2019

Third Sunday of Lent – The desert experience – In 2001 there was an exhibit at the North Carolina Zoo entitled “The Sonora Desert”. This is the largest desert in North America and is located in the Southwestern section of the USA including Arizona as well as Northern Mexico. The entrance of the exhibit featured a huge saguaro cactus which can grow to be as tall as 50 feet, weight up to 9 metric tons and live up to 200 years. The Sonora Desert is truly a land of surprises. Despite limited water, hot days and cold nights, many plants and animals have found ways to survive in the Sonora Desert. In this region of contrasts, where year long droughts can end in flash floods, a towering saguaro’s life may span centuries, while a fairy shrimp’s existence is condensed into the time it takes a puddle to dry. Yes, amazing things happen in the desert, as well as in a spiritual desert experience. Today’s 1st reading says that “Moses was tending and leading the flock across the desert”. In the 2nd reading Paul reports to the Corinthians that “God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert.” Jesus’ 40 days in the desert lead to his greatest miracle - his suffering, death and resurrec-tion. In the desert experience, there can be an oasis as well as a mirage. An oasis is a fertile or green spot in a desert, made so by the presence of water. A mirage is an optical phenomenon that creates the illusion of water. In the spiritual desert experience an oasis is a grace filled occurrence, and a mirage can be seen as an occasion of deceit, just as sin is such an occasion. Read Psalm 63. The begin-ning says “O God you are my God, for you I long, for you my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry weary land without water. So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory.” The road to the Promised Land passes through the desert for Moses, Jeremiah, Isaiah, John the Baptist, Jesus and for us too. While the desert may be life threatening, miraculous things happen in the desert. “Come and follow me”.

Next Sunday is the Four th Sunday of Lent. The readings at Mass will be Joshua 5:9-12; Corinthians 5: 17-21; Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32. So that you don’t get confused, in our – Let Us Celebrate missalette, there are readings for Year C and an option for Year A. We are in Year C and will not be using the optional Year A readings. Read the Word! Thanks to all who helped prepare for and participated in Our Lenten Penance Service. First Reconciliation – for the children who wish to receive their 1st Holy Communion, it is necessary for them to make their first confes-sion next Saturday, March 30th at 10 a.m. If the parents have a sense of the sacred, they will see to it that their children are properly prepared, spiritually and physically. Hopefully the children will come to church dressed for the occasion and prepared to confess more than their failure to feed the cat. Two kind priests will take their time to assist me and your special children with this special sacrament.

The Stations of the Cross - are prayed on Fridays of Lent – 6 p.m. in English and 7 p.m. in Spanish. The Knights of Columbus will provide a $6 Fish Fry Dinner from 5:30 – 7 p.m. with different fish on the vari-ous Fridays. Come join us in this spiritual and physical Lenten exercise. Canned Goods – will be collected to assist the poor in our community next weekend. Prior to Mass, please place some of the following items in front of the altar: tuna, canned vegetables, canned fruit, breakfast cereal, rice, macaroni or some kind of pasta and dried beans, etc. Thanks to the Youth – who, last Saturday cleaned up our church and our classrooms too. Diocesan Support Appeal. Our assessment/goal this year is $46,753. To date we have received $35,853.43,“We Are His Hands” - Do it for the Lord. You may make pledges or gifts using the enve-lopes you received in the mail or those on the tables at the entrance/exit of the church. You can also make pledges online at www.charlottediocese.org/dsa. Please be sure to indicate the name of our parish in the comments section of the online form. Thanks so very much!
