EY Entrepreneur Of The Year is the world’s most prestigious award for entrepreneurs. The award makes a difference through the unique way it encourages entrepreneurial activity and recognizes the contribution of the people who inspire others with their vision, leadership and achievement.

The program was launched in the United States in 1986. As the first and only truly global award of its kind, Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates those who are building and leading successful, growing and dynamicbusinesses, recognizing them through regional, national and global awards programs in more than 145 cities in over 60 countries.

Launched in Indonesia in 2001, Entrepreneur Of The Year program has recognized over 200 Indonesian entrepreneurs for their vision andachievement. Globally, the program has acknowledged around 50,000 entrepreneurs over the past 30 years.

Unlike other business awards programs, which take place only at local or national level, the 2016 country winner will represent Indonesia at the international awards ceremony next year in Monte Carlo, Monaco, where he or she will vie for the world’s most prestigious title for entrepreneurs, the EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Entrepreneur Of The Year Award Categories

In addition to the primary award of EY Indonesia Entrepreneur Of TheYear, there may be other awards, titled category awards, presented to the nominees. The category awards are dependent on the entrepreneurial aspects of the nominees each year. The final determiantion of the awards will be decided by an independent panel of judges. Examples of category awards given in previous years are:

• Lifetime Achievement AwardAn entrepreneur who has made a sustained contribution to thesuccess of his/her business most of his/her working life.

• Industry and Manufacturing Entrepreneur AwardAn entrepreneur who has made significant contribution in thefield of industry and manufacturing including the automotive,consumer and property sectors.

• Service Entrepreneur AwardAn entrepreneur who has made a significant contribution inthe field of services including banking, other financial services,tourism, hospitality, retail, trade and logistics sectors.

• Young Entrepreneur AwardAn entrepreneur who is below the age of 40 years old and his/her business has been operating for at least two years.

• Innovation AwardAn entrepreneur who has implemented new approaches ortechnologies and adapted or developed products or services ahead of the market.

A founder/major owner/manager of a private or public Indonesian-based company that has been running for at least three years with audited financial statements.Primarily responsible for the recent business performance of the company. An active member of top management in the company.

What makes a Social Entrepreneur?

Social Entrepreneur is an individual who leads an organization, whether for-profit or not, to achieve large scale, systemic and sustainable social change through innovation and entrepreneurial approach to social, economic and environmental problems.

The recipients of this award are individuals who are primarily responsible for directing the activities and longer-term strategy of a social enterprise (not public sector) which seeks to benefit the community. They have demonstrated superior entrepreneurial ability in leading theirenterprise and developing a business model and strategic alliances to deliver measurable outcome and sustainability.

The judging process

Judging is carried out by an independent panel of judges comprising leading figures in the business community, financial services sector, academia and past Entrepreneur Of The Year award recipients. The judges have specific high standards; they know what it takes to be an outstanding entrepreneur and what measures really matter when it comes to selecting award recipients.

The six criteria applied in assessing the nominees:

Entrepreneurial spirit• Sets very high standards for self and business and demonstrates strong

leadership skills and an unflinching desire and determination to be successful.• Demonstrates perseverance in the face of adversity and overcoming obstacles.• Has capacity to be an independent thinker and to take on and manage risks in

the face of uncertainty.

Value Creation• The value created for stakeholders through effective development and

deployment of the organization’s strategic capabilities.• The strength of the organization’s financial performance, development of

human capital and sustainability.• The quality of past investments. If public, market performance over the past

three years.• The strategies in place for long term sustainability.

Entrepreneurship is no longer a novelty; it is a necessity. Countries aroundthe world recognize that entrepreneurial spirit is the key to a prosperouseconomy. It has become the driving force behind the world’s economicgrowth and captured the public’s imagination around the globe, and it is high on the agenda of many governments.

The World Entrepreneur Of The Year award is now in its 16th year. Theprogram was created to recognize the accomplishments of entrepreneurs around the globe.
