In the Gospel today Jesus says that if salt looses its flavor it is of no use except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. I wondered what that meant since saltiness is a physical property of salt: if it is not salty it is not salt. Salt can come from deposits of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) under the earth. Under Detroit there’s a huge salt mine. A more ancient way is to evaporate sea water leaving behind the salt. That is where we get “sea salt” prized by gourmands. It is not only salt but may contain grains of sand or other impurities giving it an added flavor. The salt, that is, the NaCl may evaporate when exposed to moisture. That’s why in some restaurants add rice to the salt shaker to absorb the moisture. Once the NaCl evaporates, what is left? Sand and fish droppings. That is good for nothing except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. Salt is used for many things. To give flavor, to preserve things, to melt ice for our safety, salt water to soothe sore throats, relieve bites and stings, eliminate odors and stains… For us the moisture of sin evaporates our goodness and what is left behind? What ever it is it is not good. So we need spiritual “rice” to prevent evaporation of that spiritual salt. An active prayer life, giving thanks and praise to God, asking for his help and by the example and intercession of the Saints help. The best way is by frequenting the Sacraments. What better way to remove sin than through the sacrament of Reconciliation? What better way to praise God and be made holy that by the very Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist? Without these what is left but sand and fish droppings, good only to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Catholic Trivia
What are you reminding yourself of when you cross yourself when you enter the church?
Last week’s answer: Procession: “The ceremonial formation at the beginning of Mass consisting of altar servers, the celebrant and late parishioners looking for seats.” Recessional: “The ceremonial procession at the conclusion of Mass led by parishioners trying to beat the crowd to the parking lot.” Relics: “People who have been going to Mass for so long the actually know when to sit, kneel, and stand.”
Parish Intention of the Month
Just as the Blessed Virgin presented our Lord in the temple, may we too offer ourselves for consecration to God, through
penance and the cleansing grace of the sacrament of Reconciliation
