GOOD NEWS)ob 7:t-4,6-7 / r Corinthians 9:16-19, zz-23 | Mark 1:2f39

lllness, depression, and misfortune can makewonder whether anyone can understand whatus.

The first five chapters of Mark's Gospel give us several healing stories inwhich Jesus, by touch or word, restores individuals to wholeness. He castsout demons, as we heard last week. He cures the sick, like Simon's mother-in-law. The stories confirm what our faith tells us-that God's healing poweris for all people and that Good News lifts us and gives us joy.

But for those touched by the loneliness of infirmity of mind, body, or spirit, the stories alone might not be enough. lnstead, the fervent prayer of thepsalmist might be our grace: "The Lord...[heals] the brokenhearted" (Psalmt47:21). Or, our peace might rest in the simple knowledge of two oftenoverlooked lines in the Gospel: "They brought him many who werepossessed by demons" (Mark 8:16) and "The whole town was gathered atthe door" (Mark r:33).

Simply put, everyone came, and no one was alone.

No matter what oor condition, we are not alone.

Christ is there in our pain and suffering to give us the grace to endure. We'renot always cured by human standards, but Christ helps us find wholeness nomatter what we suffer-and in him we find our peace and our joy.

lsaiah told us that the name given to the Messiah was Emmanuef whichmeans "God with us."

ln Christ, we see the evidence that God's promise has come true.Ma ry Katha ri ne Deeley su ndayb u lleti n @ li g u o ri. o rg

FASTING

Diocese of Honolulu

All Clergy & Parishes

Deacon Modesto CorderoDirector of the Office of Worship

January 13,2015

Diocese of Honolulu 2015 Lenten Regulations

l.. In the dioceses in the United States, Catholics aged l8 through 59 are bound to fast on both AshWednesday (February 18) and Good Friday (April 3).

* To fast means to consume one fuIl meal a day at most, although taking of other, smaller quantities offood at the other customary mealtimes is permitted. Food and drink between meals (excepting waterand medicine) is not permitted on fast days.

ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT

* Catholics aged 14 and up are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and GoodFriday.

n To abstain means refraining from eating beef, veal, pork, or poultry at least, although eggs, milkproducts, or meat broths or condiments made from animal fat are OK. The consumption of fish andshellfish is permitted.

EASTER DUTY

t'. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by theobligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept is to be fulfilled during theEaster Season unless it is fulfilled, for a just cause, at some other time during the year. This period isextended to include all the weeks of Lent and the Easter Season up to Trinity Sunday (May 3l).

LENTEN PRACTICES

* The faithful are encouraged during Lent to attend daily Mass, receive Holy Communion, participatein penance services, and receive sacramental absolution; to take part in public and private exercises ofpiety, give generously to works of religion and charity, perform acts of kindness toward the sick, aged, and the poor; to practice voluntary self-denial, especially regarding food, drink, and worldlyamusements; and to pray more fervently, particularly for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Page 5: Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

.l Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, falls this year on February 18. Ashes are to be blessed as a

sign ofour entry into a season ofconversion, repentance, and reconciliation. Ashes are to be blessedby a bishop, priest, or deacon. Others may be associated with the clergy in the distribution of ashes.

* Wedding Masses may not be celebrated on Ash Wednesday, on Sundays of Lent, during Holy Week,or during the Easter Triduum. It is also contrary to the penitential spirit of the season of Lent tocelebrate elaborate weddings with an excessive number of attendants and lavish decorations.

* Funeral Masses may not be celebrated on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, or Holy Saturday, nor on theSundays of Lent. When pastoral reasons require that a funeral be celebrated on these days, only aFuneral Outside of Mass may be held.

* To afford the faithful opportunities to participate in Lenten prayer services, pastors are encouraged tohave such prayer services at least twice a week, including the Way of the Cross on Fridays,Exposition and Benediction, Evening Prayer, and evening Masses. A homily or instruction should beincluded.

BLESSING OF THE OILS AND CONSECRATION OF THE CHRISM

* In order to allow participation of Catholics throughout the islands, the Sacred Oils will be blessedduring the Chrism Mass to be celebrated in several locations. All are encouraged to join in one of thefollowing celebrations:

a. Big Island: Thursday, March 12 at7 p.m., St. Joseph Church, Hilob. Maui: Tuesday, March l7 at 7 p.m., St. Theresa Church, Kiheic. Kauai: Thursday, March 19 at7 p.m., Immaculate Conception Church, Lihued. Oahu: Thursday, March 26 rt7 p.m., Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu

THE SACRED PASCHAL TRIDUUM

A "Since Christ accomplished his work of human redemption and of the perfect glorification of Godprincipally through his Paschal Mystery, in which by dying he has destroyed our death, and by risingrestored our life, the sacred Paschal Triduum ofthe Passion and Resurrection ofthe Lord shines forthas the high point of the entire liturgicalyear" (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and theCalendar, #18). Three major liturgical principles may be of help here:

a. The Triduum may be viewed a single liturgical action that occurs over a period of three days.b. The Triduum is not part of Lent, but in its entirety, celebrates the Easter event.c. The entire focus of the Triduum is on the Triumph of the Cross and the Resurrection.

When pastoral necessity requires it, the local Ordinary may allow duplicate liturgies on Holy Thursdayand Good Friduy, but not the Easter Vigil.

Please feel free to contact me at the Office of Worship, 808-585-3342 or nSa{19i'o(g,rccha-rvaii,o1g,should you have any questions.

Blessings!

me not to wony about saluation because we're- 6fupredestined to be saued or condemned. 144ry try to be a good person if WCod has already decided uhere I'll end up?

The idea that some people are predestined to be saved andothers are damned is contrary to Catholic teaching. The Cateclism of the Catholic Church says that 'lMhen therefore

IGod] establishes his eternal plan of 'predestination,' heincludes in it each person'sfree response to his grace [600; emphasisaddedl. The Cateclism (1038) also cites the parable of the separation ofthe sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31-46), rn which thesheep and goats are separated not randomly, but based ontheir actions: "!7hen the Son of Man comes in his glory,...allthe nations will be assembled before him.And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherdseparates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep onhis right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say tothose on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by -y Father'....And [those on the left] will go off to eternal punishment."God wants to save all people. The way we respond to God'sgift of salvation is calledfree ruill.l)nfortunately, not everyoneaccepts that gift.
