Total Expenses $1,629,574 $1,273,149 78%

Profit/Loss $0 -$25,039 Revenues Offertory Collections are tracking very close to where we expected them.

Expenses Expenses continue to run close to budgeted levels. Support costs for the school are expected to accelerate in the last quarter.

Net Income The most recent quarter had a small surplus of about $1700 which has helped reduce the deficit from the previous quarters.

Balanced Budget The Finance Council and Business Manager are responsible for ensur-ing that the parish is run within the limits of the resources available. A balanced budget does not indicate that the resources were available to do all that should have been done. Our goal of $23,000 per week in the first collection as well as a generous second collection is the level at which many necessary maintenance projects could be funded and included in the budget.

Some Maintenance Projects cannot wait until the funds become available. The exterior of our church is such a project. Today, Fr. Michael will explain this need to the parish in detail.

The renovation of Incarnation Church was completed over eleven years ago. Little has been done to maintain the church since the renovation. Like many of your homes, the church has a surface finished with painted stucco. It is a durable surface but it must be maintained and kept water tight. If moisture gets behind the stucco finish, damage will occur to the supporting structure.

If you look at our church closely, particularly on the west side facing St. Michael’s Hall, you will see many areas where the stucco is cracked and needs to be repaired. The close-up pictures highlight a few examples of where this situation exists. Leaks have opened up in several of these areas causing damage to the ceiling in the church. We have temporarily patched these leaks with flexible caulk but that is only a temporary solution.

These damaged areas need to be chipped out and a new stucco coating applied. Then the entire church building needs to be sealed and painted to prevent other areas from catastrophic failure. Without doing this, it is unlikely that we can protect our sanctuary from the elements in years to come.

It is anticipated that all of this work will cost about $70,000. This is not money that we have been able to include in our parish budget. To complete this project, we need your help above and beyond the weekly collection.

We have had special envelopes printed for this cause suggesting donations of $1000, $500 and $250. We certainly will accept donations at any level however this is a project that needs to be completed in the next few months. We cannot wait for a year or two without risking the sanctuary.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s celebration varies from place to place. In some parts of the United States, people gather for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while other places celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Several years ago, regions of bishops were permitted to decide whether to retain Ascension Day on Thursday, the fortieth day after Easter, or to move the celebration to the nearest Sunday. This new flexibility in the Christian calendar has to do with the desire to gather the Church to celebrate its central feasts fully, and with the Eucharist. Increasingly, as priests serve remote and scattered parishes, this is not always possi-ble mid-week. The Ascension is a key moment for grasping what life in Christ is all about. It is not about a departure, but rather a plan for presence. We who are nourished by the Lord’s body and blood in the Eucharist are transformed to be his abiding presence in the world. That is a truth so worth celebrating that we can adjust our calendar in order that the fullest possible gathering of the Church can be achieved. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK May 20, 2012, The Ascension of the Lord Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Reflection question: Why is the Ascension a cause for joy? Collect text from the English translation of The Roman Missal, © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company, Inc.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ASCENSION The theological unity, or perhaps even the temporal experience of the early community,

made it seem that Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension were inseparable aspects of a single mys-

tery. Only in the later writings of Luke and John has further theological reflection helped the

Christian community to distinguish different dimensions of the mystery. Liturgical tradition has

followed the forty-day chronology formulated by Luke. We would miss the point, however, if we

were to demand a precise historical chronology of events such as the Resurrection-Ascension that

are primarily spiritual in nature and that clearly surpass the bounds of time and space as we know

them.

What is important for us to grasp is the significance of the Ascension. For Luke, it is the decisive

turning point that marks the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry and the beginning of the disciples’ Spirit-led ministry

and thus the ministry of the whole church down to our own day.

©Nuestra Parroquia
