Institutional logo research

In this presentation, I will be researching three different institutional logos.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. is an American media company that makes film, television and music entertainment. As one of the major film studios, it is a subsidiary of Time Warner, with its headquarters in Burbank, California.

Warner Bros. has several subsidiary companies, including Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Animation, New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment.

1923 -1929 1937 - 1948

Here is an example of some logos used since the founding of the company. Throughout the years the logo has changed and improved. The owners do this to show they’re consistent with perfecting and improving the company as well as moving along with the times.

1948 - 1967

When the institutional logo is presented, we see a cloudy background and a blue sky. This is used to represent the imaginative and creative aspects of the company as they usually imply a sense of fiction and storytelling.

We then see the initials of Warner Bros. (WB) presented inside a shield which gives the impression of a strong and dominant company that is very capable. However, the initials are still shown in a comical fashion which keeps the idea of the company creating fictional products for entertainment. This idea is also emphasized by the high contrast in colour.

Sometimes the presentation of the logo will be changed to match the same mood and atmosphere as the film. For example, this logo is from one of the Harry Potter films. The colour matches the opening titles of the movie which means the company is already trying to effectively impress the audience by adapting their product.

Here are some other examples.

Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures Corporation is a film studio, television production company and motion picture distributor, consistently ranked as one of the "Big Six" film studios of Hollywood. It is a subsidiary of US media conglomerate Viacom.

Paramount has distributed several successful film series, such as Transformers, Mission: Impossible, the Marvel Cinematic Universe series (2008–11), Indiana Jones (1981–2008).

1914 - 1952 1968 - 1975 1975 - 1987

This image mainly consists of the large mountain peaking through the clouds. Being above the clouds gives the impression of fiction and fantasy which is the main aspect of the industry.

The icon is used to represent the intentions of the company (Making fictional entertainment) which is the main reason for using clouds and sky.

DreamWorks

DreamWorks Studios is an American film production company which produces and develops films, television programming, and video games. It was also a former film distributor for its own and third-party films. It has produced or distributed more than ten films with box-office grosses of more than $100 million each.

Currently, DreamWorks' films are marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under its Touchstone Pictures banner.

For this logo, the use of clouds, night sky and the moon have been clearly highlighted to represent the dream like qualities of fictional film and animations.

There is also a child sitting on the moon fishing in the clouds. This again shows how creative this industry is and how much of imagination and ideas are put into it. It can also signify that this company mainly targets children and young people as most of there productions are fantasy films and animations.

The use of clouds, sky and space is frequently used in most institutional logos as they are connotations to the fictional and creative world of the film industry.
