Message from your LTG

Hello Division 9! ! I’m so sad that my term is coming to an end, but I know that my elect Emma Clark will do a great job next year! Even though my term is ending, it is busier than ever! We have been doing the latest two district mailings, prepping for the Midwinter Training Conference for the incoming board members, making presentations for workshops at DCON, writing the DCON script, and getting decorations. I encourage everyone to go to DCON, not only is a place for contests, meeting new people, and attending dances; it is a place to learn about the district board and the New Jersey District. Not many people understand what the district board truly does, and how much work goes into making the NJD as successful as it is. DCON is where I first learned what the district board was and I then decided to run for Lieutenant Governor. I would love for others to experience what I did! Plus, who doesn’t love Harry Potter?! I hope to see all of you there!

International update

At the January Board Meeting, International Trustee Barry Seng joined us via Skype from his home in Pennsylvania. He was very happy to update us all on the international board’s current activities and progress. 116 YOF applications were received, evaluated, and then clubs were chosen to receive the requested money. The international board is working on an amendment that will allow the money granted through YOF to go to directly through clubs, which is unlike the current process in which clubs get the money through a more lengthy process. At their January Board Meeting, the international board will be mainly prepping for ICON 2015 which will be held in Indianapolis for Kiwanis’s 100th birthday! The January Board Meeting is held in Detroit Michigan with the Kiwanis and Circle-K international boards as well. It is held in Detroit for the celebration of the Detroit #1 club; the first Kiwanis Club. About 1,000 Kiwanians will be in attended, as well as the Kiwanis International Council and Kiwanis District Governors. They will be completing the Detroit #1 Signature Service Project, which is giving books to less fortunate children. They will also be visiting the Henry Ford Museum! I know international board members are excited to kiss an octopus, a promise they made if $100,000 was raised for the Eliminate Project by New Years Eve (which we did!). For pictures of international board members kissing the octopus, check out KCI’s social media pages! An amendment will be proposed at ICON stating that you cannot have a Kiwins Club and a Key Club at the same school (for those of you that do not know, this is not an issue in the NJ District but more on the West Coast where Kiwins Clubs exist). It’s also a possibility that distinguished district officer requirements will change (not for the 2014-2015 officers though). The IT board wants the requirements to more model what a distinguished officer is. There was also discussion about the 2018 ICON location (why? we still are not sure), but it will be Chicago! It’s always so nice to hear from the cheerful Barry Seng, we enjoyed his visit at out board meeting!

January board Meeting Recap

Like all of our other board meetings, the January Board meeting was so much fun! I mean, who doesn’t want to spend a weekend with their best friends? On Saturday, January 17th at 11am, we gathered at the Double Tree Hilton in Somerset for the 5th board meeting of the NJDB. We also celebrated Kiwanis’s 100th birthday with NJ Kiwanis District Governor Nancy Hart-Espisito. The morning started with a Skype call from NJ

International Trustee Barry Seng and then 2 hours of Lieutenant Governor reports. Then, we heard the executive board’s reports and District Administrator Ms. McCann’s updates. We then broke into standing committee meetings (International Programs, District Programs, Public Relations, District Project Steering). The committees then gave their reports and we broke into our District Convention committees. After those reports we had dinner and cake for Kiwanis’s birthday! Afterwards, our Master of Ceremonies for the 69th Annual District Convention were selected and we had board bonding until midnight. The second day kicked off with an 8am breakfast and updates from NJ Circle-K District Governor Dawn Kreder. We then moved onto new business such as the next district mailing and Jersey Key issues, Eliminathon business, Eliminate Week, discussion of the Midwinter Training Conference, etc. After all new business was discussed, we did some promotional video shooting for District Convention. So what are we up to now? Well, we’re mostly prepping for Midwinter Training and District Convention. As well as compiling the next Jersey Key and KEYping Up publications along with the next two district mailings! Even though our terms are coming to an end, there is so much still left to do!

outside organizations

Kiva differs from most charities. With many organizations, all you have to do is make one donation for the job to be done. What if you could make multiple donations and later receive the money back? Kiva.org works towards giving deprived people around the world the opportunity to succeed by lending them money you donate. Once they receive the money needed to get by, they work hard and pay back the money that was lent to them. Once the money has been restored into your account, you can make another donation to help another struggling person change his or her life for the better. Donors are able to choose from a variety of people who need our help. You can give someone the chance for an education, business, shelter, etc.

How can my club help Kiva? Hold any sort of fundraiser or set aside money in your budget to put into your Kiva account. Decide what kinds of dreams you want to come true and then do it all over again. Please visit http://www.kiva.org/ or contact your Lieutenant Governor with any questions.

meet the 2015-2016 Division 9 LTG

Meet the current LTG Elect who will be serving as the 2015-2016 Division 9 Lieutenant Governor, Emma Clark! She’s a junior at the number one high school in the nation— High Technology High School. This girl is basically superwoman, I’ve never met someone more involved with school, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Not only holding the position of co-president this year at High Tech, she is the vice president of the Student Government Association and will be the president next year. Going to a science-based school, she does research competitions, is a writer for a science blog, and is part of the

Technology Student Association. She’s also part of National Honor Society at High Tech as well as a member of the track team at Manasquan High School. If that wasn’t enough, she loves the beach and reading as well. On top of her obvious hard work ethic, she’s one of the nicest people I have ever met! She’s very outgoing, energetic, and people-oriented. She’s enthusiastic about all she does — especially Key Club work—and she’s there to listen and give advice to anyone! I could not ask for a better replacement. A predecessor always wants their successor to be better than them, and I have no doubt Emma will far surpass the progress I have made this year! She’s the first non-MAST Lieutenant Governor of this division in approximately 9 years (oh my gosh) and she’ll prove to you why she was able to stop the trend! The district board won’t know what hit them when she takes on the LTG position! Congratulations and good luck Emma!
