Well, the weather outside ispretty frightful, and fire is,generally, quite delightful... so maybe it’s not too

early to be considering Christmasafter all. Last year, my family playedhost to a non-Christmas-celebratingguest for the seasonal holidays, andto say they went overboard wouldbe an understatement. Suddenly,Christmas became the best storyever told, and the collective clan foundbottomless reserves of energy with which tobombard them with stockings, crackers, hottoddies and Christmas no.1’s from decadespast. One thing they particularly excelled inwas the dinner spread.

It’s never a bad time to be thinking with our bellies, especially when the focus is onChristmas dinner and the very finest festivefrivolities that this city has to offer. Residentfoodie Andrew Kay introduces ten pages of

ARTHUR SMITH SINGS LEONARDCOHEN VOL. 2A grumpy old comedian re-imagining an even older andgrumpier troubadour’s work isnot the best premise to a funnight out, but Arthur Smith’sshow was both a faithful, iftongue-in-cheek, homage to‘laughing Len’ and an irreverentyet moving tribute to his mother,Hazel. PERFECTLY ROSYGYPSYChichester Festival Theatre, 14 October 2014

From her very first entrance Imelda Staunton nails this. It’s a great show, a thunderingly good overture, beautifully crafted Sondheimlyrics and period pastiche tunes by Jule Styne

matched with big, big numbers. The cast are, to a person, quite extraordinary and how great to seethat choreographer Stephen Mear is on top form withintelligent dance numbers that really do fit both the period and thestory, whilst at the same time pushing the company and looking brightand fresh. Kevin Whately is charming as Herbie and has a pretty decentvoice too and Lara Pulver goes from tomboy to stripper with an easy grace.

Dan Burton makes a fine Tulsa, light-footed and rich in voice, perfectin the role and three cheers for Louise Gold, Anita Louise Combe andJulie Legrand who kick ass in their big ‘Gimmick’ number. Every singlejuvenile on that stage deserves a mention but my word can GeorgiaPemberton sing and dance with high kicks that brought tears to theeyes and squeals to match. There’s so much to like about this show anddirector Jonathan Kent has recognised that by giving it to us straight, nomessing, no silly concepts but pure Broadway Gold out of West Sussex.

Finally to Imelda Staunton, an actor who more than delivers Rose, she is Rose – pushy, selfish, deluded and not just a little crazy – it was a given that she could pull all that off, and after Sweeney Todd we knew she could sing too, but how she sings Gyspsy is show-stoppinglybrilliant – this star is born, born and born over and over again.Andrew Kay

Penina Shepherd, Founder and MD of Acumen Business Law,said: “A day after the event we received more than 100 messagesby email and social media from business clients and contactssaying how much they enjoyed the night. More than 100 childrenhave died in Brightonand Hove over the pastsix years. A little-known

official body – the Child DeathOverview Panel – reviews eachdeath. The panel must decidewhether a serious case review isneeded. It must also decidewhether a child’s death raisesmatters of concern affecting thesafety and welfare of children in the area. And whether there are any wider issues arising from an individual death or from a pattern of deaths. The Child Death Overview Panel

for Brighton and Hove has a widerEast Sussex remit and reports tothe Local Safeguarding ChildrenBoard for each area. In the pastyear it has made a number ofrecommendations to the Brightonand Hove Local SafeguardingChildren Board. Some werespecific to individual cases andhad no wider relevance. But the panel wants the

clinicians who cared for a childwho died to have betteropportunities to discuss caseswith pathologists and the coronerwhen post-mortem tests andinquests take place. It also wantsto explore how to raise the profilenationally of the benefits of breastmilk banks. The aim is to reducethe risks of babies developing

necrotising enterocolitis. From April last year to March

this year the panel was notifiedof 52 deaths of children. Of those,16 were from Brighton and Hove. Most of the deaths involvenew-born babies – those up to amonth old – with babies under a year old falling into the nexthighest age group. The stats dipuntil children reach their teenswhen the number of child deathsstarts to rise again. The panel reviewed 44 deaths

during the year – 18 werechildren from Brighton and Hove. There is always a delay betweena child’s death and the reviewtaking place although staff

sickness added to this over thepast year. The aim of a review isto determine whether a child’sdeath could have beenprevented. If so, the panel has todecide what actions, if any, couldreduce the risk of future deaths.

In Brighton and Hove the LocalSafeguarding Children Boardannual report, which waspublished last week, said: “Of the11 reviews that were completedduring the year that hadmodifiable factors nine related tobabies. Modifiable factors includedinappropriate sleepingarrangements for babies and high-risk pregnancies where there wereproblems with the obstetric andmidwifery care. All of the casesreviewed were very different andthere were no obvious patterns ortrends that could be identified.”Despite the pain of

bereavement, parents have takenpart in most of the reviews of child deaths beyond the neonatalperiod over the past year. Amongother things, they providefeedback on the services that they and their children received. The safeguarding annual

report also covered wider childprotection issues for the 50,000under-18s living in Brighton andHove. It covers the first full yearsince the former Brighton andHove police chief Graham Bartlettbecame the independentchairman of the safeguardingchildren board. The report said:“While it is not possible to knowevery child at risk in Brighton and Hove due to the oftenduplicitous and secretive nature of abuse and neglect, keepingchildren safe will always be our number one priority.”The report said: “Many groups

of children in Brighton and Hoveare vulnerable.” It highlightedsome groups that wereparticularly so. They includedthose subject to or at risk of childsexual exploitation, those missingfrom home, education or care, trafficked children and those who have been privately fostered.Mr Bartlett’s report is as

diplomatic as those of hispredecessor, Alan Bedford, whocame from an NHS and social workbackground. It recognises the waythat Brighton and Hove CityCouncil social workers are liaisingmore closely with Sussex Policeand NHS clinicians. But it flags up concerns too. Some related to information sharing andmanagement oversight. MrBartlett has promised greaterscrutiny in the current year as he strives to make sure ourchildren – especially the mostvulnerable – stay safe.

Some 270 households in the cityare receiving food parcels from the 13 food banks in and aroundour city. This compares to abouttwo food banks in July 2012.The growth in food banks has

been well-documented, and is inpart due to many residents facinggrowing debt, low wages, insecurejobs, and cuts to benefits. Peopleon low incomes don’t often havethe buffer of a savings account tohelp pay for emergency expensessuch as a new washing machine or needing a new school uniform, and as a result it’s often the foodbudget that has to give. This kind of food poverty is

caused by underlying financialissues that we’ve been trying toaddress through developing acommunity banking partnershipcalled Moneyworks. There is amoney advice line (01273 809288)for residents experiencing financial difficulties, where theycan find out more about helpavailable across council and third sector services. This partnership includes charity

organisations such as the CitizensAdvice Bureau and Money AdviceCommunity Support Service, aswell as community hubs like theHangleton & Knoll Project andWhitehawk Inn. Importantly theFood Partnership is also involvedin ensuring that Moneyworks isable to help residents find outabout short-term emergencysupport as well as long-term help with food issues such asgrowing clubs and lunch clubs.Already many of the calls to

the helpline have been aboutresidents in urgent need of helpwith food so it’s clear it’s a majorissue. However food poverty can’tbe tackled in isolation and it is a symptom of residents havingwider financial problems. It’sessential that addressing access to affordable and healthy foodcontinues to be a key part of theadvice and support available toour many residents strugglingthrough financial difficulties. We’ll continue doing what we

can despite growing need, andongoing government cuts towelfare and council budgets.

JOBS BOOSTWe’re leading the way – at leastwhen it comes to jobs. Recentfigures have shown Brighton andHove has ridden the recession and smashed its job creationtarget for the past three years.

The number of jobs createdduring this time has risen by9,400 – way above its 6,000 target.

The figures make the city 38thout of 380 for growth in GreatBritain with the digital, financialand tourism sectors singled out for praise.

POOR TAXNew plans are set to take £5 out of the pockets of some of thepoorest residents in Brighton andHove. As part of a crackdown onpublic spending, the governmentis reducing the amount of money it sets aside to help people pay council tax.

Brighton and Hove City Councilhas so far been able to subsidisemuch of the funding gap. But asthe spending squeeze continues, the local authority is now tellingresidents it must make changes by 2015/16.

A consultation is now ongoingwith details on the councilwebsite.

KING ALFREDThe saga of the King Alfred leisurecentre site has rumbled on fordecades. But, after years ofwaiting, could this be about tochange? Council chiefs are now

advertising for developers to comeforward to redevelop the seafrontsite in Hove.

With hopes for a leisure centreand hundreds of homes, there isstill a lot up for discussion. Thisweek Hove MP Mike Weatherleywill present a petition calling for a 50 metre pool to be includedin the plans.

It will be a few months beforewe see if his idea are included in the firm proposals.

GREEN DREAMBrighton and Hove has long been a place where the greendream has thrived. And nowhere is that more evident than in ourown homes.

Every year, Eco Open Housessees homeowners open their frontdoors to the public so visitors canfind out about green technologiesand how they too can reduceenergy bills.

The launch of this year’s eventtakes place this weekend – it’s well worth checking out.

CHARGES PARKEDMuch celebration in Worthing as a trial to slash parking to £1 anhour in its car parks has beenmade permanent.

Town hall bosses said thechanges had brought morebusiness to the town, as well as raising more money.

I have asked if Brighton andHove would consider somethingsimilar – the answer? Not likely ...

Hey everyone! What havewe learnt since lastweek? Well, not that it'snews to you, but the

Brighton were back in action athome against Middlesbrough atthe weekend, a match that waseagerly anticipated due to thefootball drought. Middlesbroughmanager Karanka has provedhimself so far as a brilliantchampionship manager, and it'sno surprise being a student ofJose Mourinho. I write this articleprior to the match, so I'll just takea stab in the dark here and say it'llbe a 1-2 win to Boro. I'm worriedthis could upset Brighton fans, however, my dad is aMiddlesbrough fan, so I think I'drather not upset him. After all, mybirthday is coming up and I wanta decent present. Hopefully, I'll be

proved wrong with that score line, and in next week’s mag I can makeanother rubbish prediction.

To keep ourselves occupied inthe last week, the boys here atLatest Sport have been buildingthe excitement leading up toCrusader Events’ first big event atThe Hilton Brighton Metropolehotel on Friday 31 October. Wewill of course be there to captureall the action, blood, sweat andtears on the night, but in themeantime, we've been getting toknow some of the boxers that'll befighting on the night.

So far, we've caught up withsome of our home grown talent, including Marcus Eaton - a superdedicated boxer with an unbeatenrecord and a 25% knock outpercentage. He's bound to put onan entertaining fight.

We also spent time getting toknow Eli Green - with a brutalrecord of five wins in five, two ofwhich were stoppages in the firstround. This guy is sure to make amassive impact in the ring.

It turns out that Robert Frostwas a lot wiser than wethought. A London researcherdiscovered that we could

reduce the amount of pollutionwe breathe by half if we walk onempty streets and desertedneighborhoods. In fact, almost9% of all deaths in the Londonarea are caused by pollution. Ifwe want to stay healthy, the trickis to creep around the dark alleysand tiny garden paths where noone else goes. It might takelonger, but will add years to ourlives, so we can spare the time.

I wish someone had told mymother that. She was the onewho warned me never to walkanywhere at night if thestreetlights were not blazing mytrail. It was she who cautioned meto tread the crowdedthoroughfares lest I be mugged, robbed or molested. And, goodgirl that I was, I obeyed.

The trouble was that as I gotolder, I walked less and less anddrove more and more …breathing in car exhaust, motorfumes and traffic effluvia not tomention dust, dandruff and human breath. When I did walk, I neverstrayed off the beaten path for fear that some unknown ‘something’would jump out of somewhere and demolish me. If research is right,my lungs are so blackened with tar, dust and particles of god onlyknows what, that it is a miracle I am alive.

Such are the hazards of city life. I did live in the country for a short period of time in the late seventies. It

was in rural Texas, and I have to say that my lungs were clear as a bellbecause I was breathing fresh, unpolluted air. However, country air hasunexpected dangers of its own; there was a place called The Blue Holewhere the air was drenched with marijuana, and one inhalation couldnumb my mind for days. In Texas, we purged our souls and aired out ourventricles by singing gospel - when we filled the air with the grace of thelord, it seemed to balance the effect of the pot we mainlined all day.

The year I was in Texas, the heat was so intense that I madebreakfast by boiling water on the front step and frying eggs and baconon my threshold. I never once lit a stove or dirtied a pan, but I ate a lotof dirt and gravel. We lit nightly bonfires in those days and inhaledsmoke from tobacco, cannabis and rotten logs.

Still, I have to say, in Texas as in most of the USA, a lot more of us diefrom bullets than we do from pollution. In the UK it is the other wayaround. Which all goes to prove that if one thing doesn’t kill you, another will. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”- Robert Frost

THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFULGuy Lloyd waxes lyrical about winter

November and December, I blossominto an out-of-season daffodil.

I don’t know whether it’s aSagittarian thing, but for someonewho likes to socialise all yearround, I am at the top of my gamearound this time. I embrace thesocial rules which seem to bend alittle at this time of year. Namely, you can eat and drink as much asyou like. Because, its winter, you’reprobably a little depressed just bythe sheer lack of light, and youbloody well deserve it.

I also love parties. I organise one

Some nights, I would just sit outand watch the stars, because that’swhat you do when there’s no pubsin walking distance and even the24-hour Asda has closed up for thenight. I love the summer, andhaving lived in Sydney for five yearspreviously, I’ve been spoilt by it inthe past. However, a strange thinghappened when I lived in Australia.I missed winter. I actually missed sixmonths of darkness.

If you’ve lived abroad but alwayshad that strange pining for home inthe back of your mind, you’llprobably know why. It’s because, given the right mindset andattitude, and enough mulled wine -winter rocks.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Winteris my least favourite out of the bigfour. It is the Monday of seasons. It isthe season we dread and can’t waitto see the back of. But let’s look atthe positives: for me, between

Now, in my day anappropriate gift would havebeen a silver spoon or mug, orperhaps a charm bracelet, but itoccurs to me that such itemsmay not be regarded as ‘with it’or ‘fashionable’ these days.

If this is the case, can youplease inform me as to whatwould be proper.

Dear Lillian,

Thankfully, a spoon, mug or bracelet are still acceptable gifts, at least in my neck of the woods, but other items are, these days, equallyacceptable. Debrett’s provides the following list of items:

T he Preloved Designer Sale is a massive one off event thatcomes to Brighton just twice

a year, and it’s back for one week at the end of October. With athousand items at every sale, we’retalking more labels than you canshake a designer handbag at!There’s Whistles to Westwood, All Saints to Alexander Mcqueen,Chanel, Isabel Marant, Mulberry,Christian Louboutin and lots more, all at bargain prices. ThinkSelfridges on a shoestring, with upto 70-90% off your favourite names.

If you like browsing rails ofhandpicked clothes searching forthat ultimate one off bargain, this is the place for you. Plus, you toocan make some cash by selling theclothes you no longer wear. Fromthat impulse buy you’ve never wornto the dress you can no longersqueeze into, or the unwantedpresent, turn those unworn clothesinto cash by selling them thisOctober. The Preloved DesignerSale is a large one off event, and itmust be the simplest and quickestway to sell the clothes you nolonger wear we’ve ever heard of.

Katie Carne, an ex-TV producer, set the sales up a few years agowith the intention of creating anexciting place to shop, but also a

easy place to sell the clothescluttering up your wardrobe. Katiesays: “We wanted to make it ashassle free as possible. The reasona lot of people never get round toselling their clothes is because it’sall a bit of a chore and they neverfind time in their busy schedules,so we’ve set up these sales to makeit as simple as possible.”

So here’s how it works. Clearyour wardrobe of the pieces youdon’t wear, take them down to theThistle Hotel the week before thesale (collection dates below) wherethey will be priced with yourself

and the team. They then go intothe weekend sale, and the followingTuesday you get your money andany clothes back that didn’t sell. They accept high end high street todesigner, and take womenswearfrom clothes (including coats) toshoes and boots, accessories andbags, and they are currentlycollecting for autumn/winter.

Katie says: “The thing we hearover and over again from clients is how much they love the quickturnaround. One week they bringthe pieces in, the next week theyhave the cash.” It’s a great way ofrevamping your wardrobe andmaking some money to go buynew items you are actually going towear! An item might not be rightfor you now, but it will be perfectfor someone else. People makehundreds – some thousands – ofpounds in just one weekend.

And with a client list thatincludes celebrities and girls who

work for the big fashion houses, the weekend sale has somethingfor everyone. Katie says: “Since weare a large event as opposed to asmall shop, we can fit in moreitems, so it means you are morelikely to find something that takesyour fancy and fits. Hardly anyoneever leaves empty handed asthere’s something for everyone.”

Kicking off with a Friday nightshopping evening on 31 October,it’s a haven of designer items. Plus the final day is reduction day, where many pieces are reducedeven further, so if you’ve seensomething you like but didn’t buyit, it might be worth going back.Happy shopping! T ired of Christmas? You mustbe tired of life! I love it; I lovethe parties, the shopping, the

gifts, the games, and I love thefood. For me, Christmas would notbe complete with a snowball filledtumbler with a maraschino cherry,a box of dates, orange and lemonslices, chocolate liqueurs, figs, tangerines (whatever happened totangerines?) and an occasionalglass of sweet sherry. Oh yes, andturkey. Tired of turkey? Well to behonest I’m no great fan of turkey, although out of a sense of traditionI do like to do the full turkey dinnerthing at least once; you cannotbeat a good stuffing, can you, although I do eschew that sillyAmerican cranberry sauce ... or‘jam’ as I like to call it.

To be frank, a turkey dinner isoften best eaten out. It’s a mind-blowing faff to get right at home, itfills the house with steam, and canso so easily go wrong. That is myoverall tip; let someone else dothe turkey!

We have plenty of other tips thisweek for your festive partying, fromthe strictly traditional to theadventurous, from lunches and

dinners to full on, blowout parties –and back again, often in the weesmall hours of the morning, slumped in the back of a cab with aparty blower drooping from yoursatisfied grin.

At Christmas, I love to see whatall of my foodie friends at the fineend of the dining scale have tooffer, and this year there are somereally great menus to choose from.At Drakes I see that chef AndyMackenzie has some amazingtreats in store. I particularly like theidea of his chestnut soup withsmoked goose dumplings, andthat’s just for starters.

At Graze, I would kick off with theBloody Mary with brown crab andalmonds before heading throughtheir seven course platinum menuto the venison, berries, beetrootand raw chestnut, and I woulddefinitely be going for theirmatched wine option too.

At The Foragers I can always findsomething local and seasonal totickle my taste buds, and this yearit’s the pan roasted partridge breast, confit partridge leg, pearl barleyrisotto, pickled enoki mushrooms.

Always top of my list for a big

party at any time of the year isDonatello, they simply get it rightwith good service, good food andgood value, and to my way ofthinking their Tacchino Milanese isa great way to cook turkey.

In recent years, Chilli Pickle has taken the culinary world by storm winning so manyaccolades. Their Christmas menu is yet to be announced, butthere is no doubt that Chef AlunSperring and his team will bedishing up some fiery festive fareto set you alight with delight.

Our very own Latest Music Barwill once again be offering partiesto suit all pockets with deliciousbuffets and live entertainment – at LMB it’s party, party, party!

I’m a big fan of Breeze Brasserieand have in the past taken theLatest team there for an excellentChristmas lunch. Warm, friendlyand generous, Breeze is a greatchoice and great value.

Terre à Terre continues to wowthe world with their extraordinarilygreat vegetarian cooking, and atChristmas they do it all withouteven a sniff of turkey. But no needfor alarm, no doubt head chef

Matty Bowling will be conjuring up some seasonal dishes thatincorporate traditional ideas and seasonal flavours.

Brighton Rocks is under newownership and shaping up reallywell, with a spanking new menu ofclassic dishes, platters and smallplates. With craft beers and greatcocktails this is an ideal party venuethat offers a private space for yourparty, too.

Bali Brasserie in Hove, a longstanding venue serving deliciousBalinese buffets, is always a greatspace in which to celebrate at anytime of the year, but at Christmasit is extra special. As is the annualice-rink by the Royal Pavilion, where you can fall flat on yourbottom on the ice and cheeryourself up with something to eat and drink afterwards.

If you fancy a ride through thefrosty Sussex countryside, thenhead out to the Talbot at Cuckfieldwhere from 1 December they willbe offering a traditional Christmasmenu for only £24.95 for threecourses, not forgetting thecrackers! Ah yes, it is, after all, allabout those crackers.

The top tip is to get booking, asall the best venues sell out prettyfast. I’ve already booked forChristmas day – well, I’m past all theeffort of shopping and cooking myown turkey – and no, it’s a closelyguarded secret where I will be!In advance ... seasons greetings!

Foragers“While many pubs aretrying to serve up localgrub with a seasonal twist,The Foragers have gone astep further. Several steps,in fact,” says Mimi Spencerof The Observer.

Over the last eight years, the team at this Hove gem have stubbornly stuck to their philosophy ofusing only the best local produce, and this commitment is still beingacknowledged. The Foragers team have been winners at the SusssexFood & Drink Awards (Best Eating Experience) and at the Brighton andHove Food & Drink Awards (Best Food Pub).

Over the festive period, The Foragers aim to exceed expectations oncemore. Their superb Christmas menu for groups of six or more is greatvalue at £28 per head for dinner, or, even better, they are offering an earlyweek promotion from Monday to Tuesday of £22.50 for the same menu. The promotion ends 17 December and conditions apply.

This pub has been a trailblazer in both sustainability and fine pubgrub, and is therefore a must for all festive foodies. The Foragers, 3 Stirling Place, Hove, BN3 3YU 01273 733134 / www.theforagerspub.co.uk

Breeze BrasserieAward winners Breeze Brasserieknow how to put on a fine festivefeast, and one that will not breakthe bank. At £16.95 per person itticks the right box for price, but aclose look at the menu revealsthat it ticks those food boxes, too.

Hearty roasted carrot andparsnip soup is a fine winterwarmer, and a great option forvegetarians, whilst prawn cocktailor duck pate have a delightfulseasonal feel. For mains, thetraditional roast turkey is stuffedwith walnuts and sage, chickenbreast is topped with bacon andcheese, and a wild mushroomrisotto cake comes with a creamedparmesan sauce, spinach andpoached egg.

Of course there is a Christmas pud, but also Banoffee pie or even icecream if you are needing to loosen that belt – and you may well. Breezeare not in the habit of serving dainty portions! There’s plenty of optionsfor all. The wine list is well priced too, with house wines for £14.95 andthe house champagne a modest £39.50.

With a friendly welcome, great service and smart interior they havespace for parties of all sizes, large and small, at both lunch and dinner.Breeze Brasserie, 98 Trafalgar Street, Brighton, BN1 4ER 01273 693377 / breezebrasserie.co.uk

Yo yo yo, Rom Rom Rom! How are you doing today lovely man?I’m great thanks. I’ve just been to Legolandwith the kids. We kept getting lost. It was a very expensive walk.

Right, so you’re bringing your show back toBrighton for the Brighton Comedy Festivalafter performing it for a month in Edinburgh, which you did after previewing it in Brighton. What does the Edinburgh catalyst in themiddle do to the show to make it sparkly? It makes you get rid of the ‘cocky’ bits andtighten it up. Also you just get better atperforming it. And you remember it. And you get to see me do it without a notebook.

Last year you were nominated for the prestigiousEdinburgh Award (formerly Perrier). I’mpresuming this year you’ll sweep the board of plaudits and prizes. Who would you like tothank first in your acceptance speech – and who comes in a begrudging last, and why?I would first thank my wife – she’s put up with a lot, and continues to do so. The person I wouldbegrudgingly thank is my wife, because if sheleft me it would make for an excellent show. Inthe future I imagine I will push her to that point.

You have so many ties to Brighton you’repractically a ribbon factory of connections toour fair city. Do you have a favourite storythat took place here that makes you smile

and grimace at the same time?I got heckled at Komedia once,

and the audience aroundthe guy turned

on him andstarted

ROM-A-LAM-A-DING-DONG!

saying “You can’t talk to him like that!”. It wasthe most polite audience I have ever experienced.

So… Rom Wasn’t Built In A Day is your newmuch applauded and appreciated show. Criticsare loving it. You used to be a teacher, so isthis a history lesson looking at ancient tales ofa Roman bespectacled Sri Lankan gentleman?

It’s just a show loosely about self-improvement.My wife being pregnant with a third

child made me really reflect onwhether I’m a good dad and husband. The results of that reflection are in the show in some form.

Seriously though, you are all over the TV set right now – from Mock

The Week to Stand Up For The Week, withappearances on Virtually Famous betweenseries. Congratulations. If you could have a TV show of your own would you like asitcom or a panel show?I’d love to do a sitcom, as I imagine every comic would.

And what would be the format of this sitcom?I have no idea. Autobiographical I imagine, but I was thinking about playing a guy like me,who, for some reason, has a dream to be a maleerotic dancer, and his journey to that point. It’s basically a way for me to try to get in shape.

So, what are your plans for the next 12 months professionally?I’m touring with Suzi Ruffell. So knocking that out of the park will be a big goal. Plus I’m doing another series of Newsjack.

And what do you hope to get done in the next 12 minutes?About to smash through a veggie spag bol.

Right, so some fluke has meant that you’veinherited the old burned out pier in Brighton. With money no object, what would you dowith it?I would turn it into a huge vegan mega bakery. With doughnuts, cakes, pastries, the whole lot. Then I’d run it, with a team of crack veganbakers, serving Brighton ethical treats whileeating loads of it myself, until I eventually justpass away through excessive gateau ingestion. That’s the fantasy anyway.

Thank you very much and have an awesomerest of your day.

The Nightingale presents a doublebill of musical cabaret at TheBasement this November, in theshape of Body Not Fit For Purpose/

A Lyrical Dance Concert. These two shows push the boundaries of

dance in a special two-part event. Openingthe evening are the acclaimed JonathanBurrows and Matteo Fargion who presentBody Not Fit For Purpose. Their first overtlypolitical work, the piece highlights thefutility of using dance to express importantissues while celebrating the ‘gloriousfoolishness’ of trying.

Burrows and Fargion have been invitedaround the world with their unique brand ofhumour and intellectual rigour. Burrows andFargion are currently in-house artists at theNightingale in Brighton.

After a break with canapés and drinks, thevenue will welcome A Lyrical Dance Concertfrom 8.30pm. Described as ‘a party in acomedy act in a cabaret show in a gig in anexperimental dance performance’, the show

sees the lyrics of chart hits past and presentdanced out by performers Gillie Kleiman andEleanor Sikorski with joyful irreverence andserious fun.

The show insists that pop music belongs tous and can do what we want it to do. And assuch, you can get your glad-rags on, grab adrink and a pal, and giggle along with thismixed-up whirlwind of glamorous divas, guitarsolos and gangster rappers.

Gillie Kleiman (co-choreographer/performer)is an artist. From Gillie’s practice of dance andchoreography emerge artworks presented incontexts associated with dance, theatre, live artand experimental performance.

Sara Lindström (co-choreographer/performer)

is an artist from Sweden. Her artistic practice isone of dance and choreography in its broadestmanifestations, from live performances to filmand site-specific installation work. Her morerecent work has unfolded around questions ofpublic space and she has been commissionedto develop site-specific works in various places.

The Nightingale’s double bill, bringing thesetwo extraordinary shows together, isguaranteed to be a chuckle-inducing andthought-provoking evening’s entertainment. Body Not Fit For Purpose/A Lyrical DanceConcert, Saturday 15 November 2014, 7pm -10pm, The Basement, Kensington Street,Brighton, £20/£18www.nightingaletheatre.co.uk

Having spent the ‘90s in the single digits I am, of course, painfully familiar with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Alongwith Power Rangers and X-Men (which I still maintain is agreat TV show - and not just because I had quite the crush

on Rogue), the Ninja Turtles were a stalwart of Saturday morningkids’ TV. Those were the days when having five channels was flashyand all styles of programme could be found on the same channel.Personally, I am rather fond of that style of channel; it encourages afamily to sit together watching the same programme as even if onlysome of them like it, well, they'll enjoy the next one. One of thegreat things about LatestTV is its diversity – and I don’t just meanletting a girl who can’t hear properly present the film show!

This week I have certainlyexperienced that variety;Joseph and I are working on ascary series called‘Shocktober’, all about thezombie experience at Tully’sFarm – watch out for it ifyou’re a horror fan! At thesame time we are reviewingTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesfor PostFeature, which, although it is the first TMNT film to begiven a 12A rating, is certainly a film for children (and notnecessarily in the ‘oh, what a great reference’-still-amusing-for-adults Shrek type vein).

The new film is released on the 30th anniversary of the TeenageMutant Ninja Turtles saga and is another city-destroyingblockbuster from Michael Bay. Personally, I’m not a great fan of hiswork or of any film in which millions of nameless, faceless peopledie and the supposed ‘good guys’ don’t even notice … don’tmistake me; I love a good explosion, I adore a well done car chaseand the mindless fun of a big budget, glittering Hollywood actionfilm certainly serves a purpose. But let’s contrast for a moment thegratuitous and heedless death count of Bay’s Transformers films (inwhich large robots crush buildings that must be full of people) tothe Fast And Furious franchise, in which every body has a face andthe heroes put themselves in danger to save innocent bystanders!Granted, they also drive onpavements and through townsand typically manage to flip overother cars, but the camera takespains to show people jumpingout of the way (dear goodness, can the general public jump at apace in the F&F world!) and whena car flips over, we see peoplecrawling out or else their death ismourned. These films care aboutpeople – even the bad guys havesomeone who sheds a tear forthem! Now that is my kind ofaction film.

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

L ike so many of the high points in my life, this column is beingwritten under the influence of a glass (or two) of Rioja. Whenteam Arty tied the knot a few years ago we eschewed thetraditional gift list and asked instead for additions to the

Kemp St. cellar. Fortunately, the fabulous

Frances Bloomfield took pity onour livers and instead created forus one of the most treasuredartworks that hangs on our walls. It’s a ‘Dream Box’ that exemplifiesbeautifully her unique talent forengaging the viewer in raptreflection. Frances describes herwork as an exploration into “thelayered narratives of dreams and the ‘improbable’scenarios that we unconsciously construct”. What’s so captivating isthe curious juxtaposition of the elements she contains (in our case, the work is acutely personal as our names and wedding date arewoven into the story). What’s so astonishing is the intricacy of thecutting and construction. Each Dream Box imagines a newinterpretation of reality. Discover your own at francesbloomfield.com.

Don’t miss: Tucked away in the North Laine, ink_d gallery on NorthRoad is a great place to enjoy art from leading contemporary artistsalongside the freshest of up-and-coming talent. On show there now is‘8 Forever’ by self-styled ‘adult toy collector’ Ryan Callanan (AKARYCA). The works are inspired by the artist’s formative influences atage eight. So expect an overflow of references from an ‘80s childhoodand a never-before-seen new technique of toy torture, which theartist calls Pressure Painting. Iconic characters from Callanan’scollection – including He-Man, Darth Vader and the Mutant NinjaTurtles – are placed under extreme pressure and moulded with cleargranular plastic to create fused distortions of themselves. Theexhibition runs until 9 November.www.artymagazines.com

Every now and then, something so newcomes along that all you can do isscratch your head and be glad that yougot to see it at all. Sometimes it gets

bigger and then everyone sees it, and thenstarts saying how they had thought of it first(just look at any of Michael McIntyre’s well-crafted gags and try to remember what youcalled the drawer for Sellotape before he toldyou about his ‘man drawer’), and sometimesthey shine and then disappear like a bubbleblown in the garden on a summer’s day. George Egg’s show is definitely not the

latter. I know this because it has alreadybeen nominated, earlier this year, for theBest Comedy Show in the Brighton Fringe. That doesn’t mean it’ll be filling stadiums

this time next year either, with scores of peoplemocking his floppy hair (or lack thereof). It does mean it’ssomething new. It

also means thatit sparkles.

George Egg offersa culinary andcomedic first

adapting to it with real aplomb – George Eggtakes his surroundings, rejects the fast foodand motorway service station lifestyle, andcarves a new way of living and performing.Want to know how? Egg describes it best:

“During the one-hour show, I cook on stagea three course meal using just theequipment you’ll find in a hotel – iron, kettle, trouser press, mini bar, hairdryer etc.And then the audience get to eat the food atthe end.” And thus the sparkle.Added sprinkles come in the fact that Egg

has lived in Brighton for 22 years, allowing usto adopt his creativity and pretend it’s in someway connected to living in our unorthodoxhub, when really we have to admit it’s all him.Comedy is the best medium because it

allows for shows like this to develop andshine. Also, it attracts and ignites thecreative juices in other comedians, feedinginto the magical hubbub that brings usnights like ‘Gittins To Know You’ (recentlyseeing Harry Hill joining the anarchic quizshow panel) and ‘Ski, Two, One’ With FlangeKrammer, co-hosted for a while by Game OfThrones star and comedian Gemma Whelan. So celebrate the something-new and the

wonderfully off-the-wall, and grab somegrub with George Egg. And thank him at theend. It’s the new ideas that keep us comingback for more.George Egg: Anarchist Cook, Bar Broadway,9pm, Wednesday 29 & Thursday 30 October,£8.50/7, www.brightoncomedyfringe.co.uk

“Iknew people likedthat band, but Ididn't realise itwould be this

crazy!” says Mark, as hegets ready for the secondphase of The Pop Group, agroup that briefly alightedthe UK before splitting upin 1981, leaving a trail ofbreath-taking musk, as canbe heard on albums suchas We Will Not Tolerate MassMurder and We Are Time, theirdebut album, which has beenremastered and will be reissuedin line with their UK tour.

The Pop Group count TrentReznor, Nick Cave and MikeWatt as big fans, while MarkStewart himself has worked formany years with the On-U-Sound collective, who for awhile included Gary Clailamongst the extended family (afellow Bristolian, he had anumber one hit with ‘Beef’.)

“Me and Gary Clail used tohang out in the Greyhound(legendary Bristol pub), nearthe Massive Attack studio up inClifton. I used to wash up atKeith Floyd’s restaurant just afews doors down so that I could

earn money to go to London tobuy records and clothes and stuff... we were at school, and then wewere on tour with Patti Smith andPere Ubu; about seven monthsafter our first gig we were on thefront pages of the music papers, and then we were in New Yorkwhen the No Wave stuff waskicking off, and we heard somereally early hip hop stuff ... we wererecording radio shows on doublecassette ghetto blasters, then tookthem back to Bristol andimmediately it went viral. Delge(3D, later of Massive Attack fame)was drawing graffiti on them, andhip hop kicked off in Bristol.”

The Pop Group lay dormant foryears before Matt Groening, TheSimpsons creator, called: “He was

curating All Tomorrow’sParties, and he asked us toplay. He wanted Iggy toreform The Stooges and usto reform The Pop Group. Ithought I’d see it as a newcommission, not a‘heritage’ thing.”

And now with a full headof steam, some new tunes(“The new stuff is soundingdemented”) and amid astrong resurgence of

interest in the more experimentaland avante-garde end of the post-punk and funk spectrum, The PopGroup, complete with originalmembers Gareth Sager, Dan Catsisand Bruce Smith, are embarking ona tour of the UK, including what istheir first ever show in Brighton.

“They aren’t copying,” says Markabout the current crop of PopGroup influenced acts, “they cut, paste, juxtapose, attack, question, and are running off free toexperiment. If that’s what we did orhopefully what we are still doing, then it’s a reason to be.”Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Sat 25 Oct,7pm, £17.50

America worries me sometimes, and I’m a self-professedAmericanophile. I love chocolatechip pancakes with bacon; I love

Captain & Tennille; I love words like ‘trash’ (rubbish), ‘pants’ (trousers)and ‘cilantro’ (basil). I love their comedy television and their dramatelevision. I do NOT like their reality television. And when I watch it, Isigh for America.

This Saturday evening I spent the night at home. A friend came over tohang out. We hadn't seen each other for a few weeks, and so needed tocatch up. TLC (the channel, not the band) was on my TV in thebackground. This was a mistake, as it consequently took over.

At the end of the evening, after my friend had left and I'd stayed on mysofa for a further two hours watching a back-to-back marathon of CyberStalkers, I turned my TV off. However, when turning it back on on Sundaymorning, my Sky box was still on TLC. This then lead me to watching moreAmerican reality programming, and being late for breakfast with my motherand step-father. When returning home from my day, TLC was still on. Icouldn't seem to switch channels. The shows were so morbidly compellingthat I continued to watch into the early hours of Monday morning!

Take Extreme Cheapskates, forexample. One of the two episodes Iwatched followed Steffanie, an airhostess, who decided it was a good ideato appear on the show to brag abouthow she saves money by taking left-overmeals from the flights she works on. Notonly this, but she explained to the eagerviewer that if you take four small plane pillows and stuff them into aregular sized pillowcase, you effectively have one large pillow. In short, she steals from work. Surely she’s now saving the pennies because shehas since been sacked by the TLC-watching chief of Detroit Air.

This story ends up with her getting married in the Alabama unclaimedbaggage centre for less than $400.

Then there was Sex Sent Me To The ER, which told multipleheartwarming tales in one episode. One was the story of the couple whodecided it was time to consummate their relationship. The girlfriendinvited the boyfriend back to her flat to make sweet love, and alsointroduce him to her jack russell terrier. This was not a cute jack russelllike the one from Frasier. This one was obsessed with its owner; mid-coitus, the gentleman is bitten on the back of his neck, by the dog, potentially contracting rabies. Sex sent him to the ER.

Then came the story of the newlyweds who had spent the afternoonexperimenting with a ‘sex chair’, only for them to eventually require a visitto hospital. The most disturbing thing about this story was that A) theparents of both newlyweds were present at the ER, and B) the doctortelling the story had decided it was a good idea to play himself in thedramatic reconstruction. There's less one PhD on his rumpus room wall.

Anyway, it turned out the newlywed woman was not in searing agonydue to the sex chair experiment - she was actually five months pregnant, despite only being married to her husband for a couple of weeks. Youcan't make this stuff up (can you?). Sex sent her to the ER.

Have you ever been put on the spotand apropos of nothing beenasked to ‘be funny’? Everyonewho works in entertainment has,

at some point, probably suffered theindignity of being expected to entertain oncue like a performing monkey. I have thisissue each and every week. Admittedly itis a self inflicted issue rather than animpromptu baying audience, as I prepareto stare into numerous cameras andamuse the audience of the show BoredGamers. Jim and I have been flattered byviewers telling us that we come across ontelevision as naturally funny, with a good

bond between us. This is all the more impressive when you considerwhat goes into the making of an episode.

There are many different segments on our show, but in their simplestform they can be divided into those auto-cued and those where webasically make it up as we go along. With the auto-cued segments, anargument can be made that we have the time to carefully script wellrehearsed funny banter, however time is never on our side! The auto-cuescript is usually done as the last thing before sleeping on Wednesdaynight. Not out of disorganisation, but because, throughout the week, weneed to shoot and edit features and create a detailed studio cue sheetwith precise timings before we know how long to allocate to auto-cuedsegments. The short of it is that we are often trying to be side-splittinglyhilarious at 2am on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Sleep deprivedand often a couple of bottles of wine in, we usually suffer the polaropposites of either finding little funny at this point, or literally everything,as we giggle incessantly and uncontrollably like schoolgirls.

The non auto-cued segmentswhere we shoot the breeze whilstaiming to amuse are even harder tojudge. Bearing in mind that we areup at 6am to be in the studio for alittle after 7am (having gone to bedat the aforementioned 2am), werun around for a few hours settingup, punching glitching technologyand drinking energy drinks beforeaiming for hilarity at Camera One. In fairness, though I think I am areasonably funny guy, in these circumstances I feel Jim is thankfullyentertaining enough for the both of us! I may sound whiny and ungratefulfor the sake of journalistic content, but in truth, I love my job and lookforward each week to shooting the show. Tune in this week to laughalong with us, or not, as the case may be!Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming. Tune in to see it on Latest TV at 9.30pm every Friday night.
