I ’m often laughed at for my strictself-imposed rule of visiting fourcountries per year. So, with one still
to go in 2011, and a free First GreatWestern ticket to a destination of mychoice, it made sense to get mymoney’s worth by taking a trip toCathays Park in Cardiff, Wales.
Cathays Park was described in thePevsner guide to Glamorgan as ‘thefinest civic centre in the British Isles’(presumably followed soon afterwardsby Newport Civic Centre, a wonderfulArt Deco affair which I had the goodfortune to see from afar on anunfortunate stop en-route to Waleswhen my train was severelydelayed).
In 1897, the architectural firm ofLanchester, Stewart and Rickardswon a competition to design both atown hall and courts as the firsttwo structures in a spaciousenclave of public buildings in thecentre of Cardiff. Each of the twobuildings opened in 1906, thoughthe proposed town hall actuallyopened as the City Hall after Cardiffwon its city status in 1905, and eachis now Grade I listed. Incidentally, thecompetition was judged by AlfredWaterhouse, architect of the NaturalHistory Museum in London but also ofthe doomed Hove Town Hall (thatburnt down in 1966) and the ruinedMetropole Hotel in Brighton (that hasbeen vandalised almost continually since 1959).
Cathays Park consists of two principal avenues with various inter-connecting roads and paths that surround a central grassed area which ishome to the Welsh National War Memorial. The fifteen or so huge Portlandstone institutions that line the avenues are of similar heights but different,yet complementing, styles which include Edwardian Baroque, Neoclassicism,Art Deco and Brutalism.
Whilst it is the concept of the composition that fascinates most, forBrighton and Hove has no equivalent civic centre after all, I was taken by oneof the buildings in particular. The obvious favourite is Cardiff City Hall for itsgrandeur and, indeed, its distinctive clock tower. But I was more drawn to theArt Deco lines of the first of the two Crown Buildings on the site.
One building of interest is the attractive University of Wales Registrywhich bears a striking resemblance to Hove Library. A Cathays Library existsbut it is not actually situated within Cathays Park. H appy New Year, dear reader,and welcome to thesparkling and exciting
number that is 2012. I can nowsay ‘2012’ in Arabic, although itwill probably be at least 2013before I can string it together withany degree of aplomb ordiscernible accent.
I am currently on a transatlanticflight to Cuba, which has given mea great deal of time to reflect onthe year that was 2011. It was theyear during which I went on holidayevery single month – apart fromNovember, when I had a muchneeded holiday from going onholiday. As much as I enjoy goingon holiday, I can’t help feeling thatI’m wasting time which could bereadily employed doing somethingmore useful. During my friend andI’s ‘Annual Review’, which meansChristmas shopping followed bydrinking bucket-loads of winewhile discussing the ways of theworld in what ultimately becomesa highly incendiary manner, Katyended by saying that it was hightime that I got back on theproperty wagon.
After I’d stopped laughing andin the cold light of day with a kiloof Berrocca, I began to take her comment on board and reasoned that it wasn’tsuch a bad idea. After all, my skills (well, the ones which pay any money) lie inthe property market. And it is sometimes easy to forget that this column iscalled The Landlady. Curiously, in spite of all the doom-mongers, it feels like agood time to start investing again. Moreover, my mother recently left me somemoney, which would be a great starting point, that is if we ever manage to sellher house in Stoke-On-Trent, which might as well be Stoke-On-Mars, as far asthe property market is concerned.
This has been something of an epiphany to me, during which Sarah Beenymight as well have appeared as a vision in white overalls, bathed in the softlight of a welding torch. I haven’t laid my hand on a box spanner for a goodeight year, as flinging myself around the dance floors of Havana has been amore appetising option. But I will probably still be able to do that in five yearstime – with the underpinning of Spanx and wrinkle-cream – whereas contortingmy ageing torso around the (always) ill-placed incline of a U-bend may be lessof a pleasure once I’m over 50.
As you can tell, I’m mustard-keen on the idea and became even more sowhen I bumped into a fellow property-mogul at the supermarket, whodismissed my enthusiasm out of hand, then roared with laughter at thethought that I might make a profit. If anything makes me more determined it’sthe red-flag waving of an arrogant man, so watch out estate agents, here Icome. through the intercom: “Who’s gotthe chickens!?”
I don’t know what to say... Are we talking roasted? Are wetaking about an Iceland wrongdelivery? Or is it someone tryingto locate a flock of livingchickens by ringing people’sdoorbells and just asking? I livein a small one bed flat in innerBrighton. It’s rare to have abalcony never mind a garden;who would have the chickens?
I don't have space forchickens, I don't have space formy own limbs in this flat, nevermind squawking birds.
In a recession, howeverhungry I became for home grownprotein, I don’t think I’d ever resort to keeping my own chickens, garden ornot. In fact, farm or not! I'm looking into my basement neighbour’s garden, I can see they do not ‘have the chickens’. Now I too want to know, who doeshave these chickens?
The voice through the intercom says: “They are escaping and I’ve caughtone!” I tell her I don’t know... I'm wondering if she is another Brighton nuttermaking mischief on my doorbell. Hey, I’m just relieved it’s not Jehovah’sWitnesses ringing my doorbell inviting me to welcome God into my heart.I’ve got so much good in my heart, I haven't got room for a god. I hope Heunderstands if a time comes when I need to explain this to Him.
The voice through the intercom informs she is from the RSPCA and Inotice her RSPCA card has been put through the door. ‘Who’s got thechickens?’ is written on it. This woman is obsessed. Hmm. It does seempretty authentic. I text all my neighbours in the flats: ‘Who’s got thechickens?’ I sound like a mad woman neighbour who lives alone.
The only neighbour with outdoor space that I can’t see into is my aboveneighbours, (they have a balcony)... Again I text: ‘Have you got thechickens!?’ It seems plausible, after all, they do hula hoop, play thesaxophone and have open log fires in a city flat conversion. But I thoughtthey were vegan...
After a long delay in response, which felt like a text equivalent of anaughty kid shuffling their feet around while staring at the floor, theyreplied: ‘Yes...They're for a film shoot!’. I knew it.
This is why I love Brighton. In London no-one would ring my doorbelldemanding to know where the chickens were. In London perhaps mydoorbell would be rung to ask me if I had seen the face in the photofit in the vicinity. In the countryside no-one, not even friends, would ring thedoorbell, would they? They’d just walk right in banging on about fowl. I’mconsidering keeping a sheep just to weird out my neighbours/RSPCA oneSaturday morning. “Right, who’s got the sheep?!”

E very so often, a survey is published saying the average person spendsa third of their life asleep. Not true in my case. I wish it was. In thesame survey, they might also time-shunt (that’s my phrase; I don’t
know what the official term is) other activities together, and claim that youspend two whole weeks of your life picking your nose, or whatever. They thinkthat’s surprising, but I even remember the year. 1986.
Anyway, I’ve been thinking about 2011 and for the benefit of Latest Homesreaders, I thought I’d do some time-shunting with various parenting-relatedactivities, to indicate the make-up of my year.
We may as well put sleeping first, andhaving downgraded the allocationfrom a third to a quarter – Isurely get less sleep than theaverage – we land at April Fool’sDay. I’m going to set aside thewhole of April to being awake butthinking about sleep. This ranges frommentioning to others that I’m tired todaydreaming about, well, dreaming.
We’re up to the first May BankHoliday weekend already. For anactivity which neatly fills thosethree days I nominate puttingthings back on hooks that havejust fallen off hooks. The nextfortnight would represent allthe times when I walked into aroom and forgot what I went infor. Yes, I know that makes mesound old. On that topic, at leasta week of 2011 – my 40thyear – was spent calculatingexactly how old I am, and howmuch time has passed sincesome previous fixed point.
We’re in June. Coaxing Youngest™ upstairs for his bath, that’s surely sevendays (which, for comparison, could have alternatively been spent on areasonably relaxing package holiday on a Mediterranean island). Otherpackage holiday length activities? Prompting Youngest™ to finish his foodusing an oh-so-positive tone: “Look! You’ve missed that carrot!”. (I couldhave been in Kefalonia). Instead of a lounger in Lanzarote, I spent anothertime-shunted week fielding what-ifs about Star Wars characters.
Pretending that our destination is ‘just around the corner’ probably addstogether to equal the same length of time as actually driving from one end ofthe country to the other. At least two days in 2011 were taken up withanswering questions about sharks, and I only know three facts. (They’ve gotsharp teeth and dead, black, eyes. I forget what the third is.)
Obviously, some of the year was taken up with non-parenting activities. Sowe’ll zoom forward to the last fortnight in December which was spentanswering The Boy’s quite difficult and detailed questions about FatherChristmas. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was cross-checking facts towrite the definitive biography.

report a company not only holdingits own, but expanding, which isexactly what Elliotts have just done.Kevin Weatherill, who will run thenew branch in Hangleton, and co-director Brian Huggins, explainedwhat prompted them to open a newoffice at this time.
“Certainly the market is quieterthan it was, compared to 2006–7 it’squieter yes, but in real terms it is backto normal and prices have stabilised,we are expanding when the market isstable,” says Brian.

The 2011 PBRA Fifth Element ‘Making-Sense-of it’special...
A very happy New Year; it seemsonly appropriate to start with whatwere the closing headlines of 2011.The Autumn Statement, aka The Pre-Budget Report (PBR), is aninteresting thing. Like Fry’s TurkishDelight, full of promise, but unlessyou’re a big fan, does it reallydeliver? More importantly, did lastyear’s PBR? Here are some of thehighlights and my views on whattook place and how things mightaffect you and your business.
FinanceCredit easing underwrites £40bn inlow-interest loans and a £1bnbusiness finance partnership isannounced. The £40bn credit easingmay help reduce borrowing rates butthe real problem for smallbusinesses isn’t the rate, it’s theoverall affordability and the attritionthe process demands. I’m not sayingthat lower rates won’t help, but forsmaller businesses it won’t makemuch difference. The £1bn businessfinance partnership isn’t likely tohelp either although if trading withmedium sized businesses you mightget more work. Let me make it clear,this is not a political column and Iam not an economist (although I dolike to dabble). That said, theChancellor missed his moment; the‘corner-shop-keepers’ of thiscountry’s business community needaccess to cash. A lack of itsuffocates growth. So what can wedo about it? My advice is to ‘trade-out’. If you need £20k of cash flow tomeet that new order, make the extraprofit first. It’s a tough time and thisreally is the only way forward – butit’s a good one.

BusinessThe chancellor announces more tax relief for people who invest instart-up businesses, business rateholiday relief for small firms isextended to April 2013 and new time limits for planning applications.All good news in particular for retailand construction, but is it enough?Admittedly, the new house buildinginitiatives should help someconstruction sectors but there is areal shortage in the money supply inboth areas. If you work or trade ineither, think strategically and don’twait for the iceberg. Post sentriesyou can rely on, don’t sail too fast,over-engineer your bulk-heads, listento the iceberg warnings and don’t letLeonardo DiCaprio near yourgirlfriend... or the big blue diamond.
And finallyFond of a summing up, I will keepthis one short. The governmentdoes what it does or rather what it can; the rest is down to us.Business is about the quality ofadvice we seek and the quality ofdecisions we make. Do both well,and the year is your oyster.
