1 Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—October 4, 2020—-27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Clare of Assisi (1194 –1253), was born in Assisi, Italy. She was of noble birth, the oldest daughter of Count Favorino Sciffi, and his wife Ortolana, who was a very devout woman. Ortolana had undertaken pilgrimages to Rome, Santiago de Compostela and the Holy Land. Later in life, Ortolana entered Clare's monastery, as did Clare's sisters, Beatrix and Catarina. Clares father was wealthy and she grew up in a palace and vacationed in a castle. As a child, Clare was devoted to prayer. As a teenager, she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach during a Lenten service and asked him to help her to live after the manner of the Gospel. On Palm Sunday, with her aunt and another friend, Clare left her father's house-without his knowledge-to meet Francis. Francis placed Clare in the convent of the Benedictine nuns. There, her beautiful blonde hair was cut, and she exchanged her rich gown for a plain robe and veil. Her father attempted to force her to return home, but she clung to the altar of the church and threw aside her veil to show her cropped hair. She resisted all her fathers attempts to take her home, and have her take a husband like most girls of her era did. Clare told him that she would have no other husband but Jesus Christ. In order to provide the greater solitude Clare desired, Francis eventually sent her to a more isolated monastery of the Benedictine nuns, where she was soon joined by her sister Catarina, who took the name Agnes and later became a saint, too. They remained with the Benedictines until a small dwell- ing was built for them next to the church of San Damiano, which Francis had repaired some years earlier. Others joined them, and they were known as the "Poor Ladies of San Damiano". They lived a simple life of poverty and seclusion from the world, according to a Rule which Francis gave them as a Second Order, the female counterpart of his new Order of Franciscans. The sisterslife consisted of manual labor and prayer. The nuns went barefoot, slept on the ground, ate no meat and observed almost complete silence. For a short period, the Order was directed by Francis himself, but Clare soon became undisputed leader of this Order. During Clares lifetime, similar convents were established all over Italy and parts of France and Germany. Ten years after Clare's death, Pope Innocent renamed the Order: the Order of Saint Clare. In her later years, Clare endured a long period of poor health. She died on August 11, 1253 at the age of 59. Her last words are reported to have been, "Blessed be You, O God, for having created me." Although many advisors cautioned against it, Pope Innocent IV insisted the friars perform the Office for the Virgin Saints at her funeral as opposed to the Office for the Dead. This move ensured that the canonization process for Clare would begin shortly after her funeral. At Pope Innocent's request the canonization process for Clare began immediately. While the whole process took two years, the examination of Clare's miracles took just six days. On 26 September 1256 Pope Alexander IV canonized Clare as Saint Clare of Assisi. One of the miracles attributed to Saint Clare occurred during the era of the Crusades. The emperor Frederick II had been excommunicated by Pope Gregory IX, along with any man serving in his army. So, Frederick hired Saracens, Arab, and Muslim mercenaries. Villages were burned, and atrocities were committed against the innocent and the defenseless. Monasteries were destroyed and unspeakable violations committed against nuns. Clare was sick in bed when word came that the Saracens were headed for San Damiano. As ladders were being set to scale the walls of the convent, Clare rose from her bed and went to our Lord, present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Eucharist. She prayed, prostrated herself before the Lord, and prayed: Behold, my Lord, is it possible You want to deliver into the hands of pagans Your defenseless handmaids, whom I have taught out of love for You? I pray You, Lord, protect these Your handmaids whom I cannot now save by myself.Suddenly a voice like that of a child resounded in her ears from the tabernacle: I will always protect you!’ ‘My Lord, she added, if it is Your wish, protect also this city which is sustained by Your love.Christ replied, It will have to undergo trials, but it will be defended by My protection.Clare then comforted the sisters: I assure you, daughters, that you will suffer no evil; only have faith in Christ. In the church of San Damiano, Clare and her spiritual daughters prostrated themselves on the floor in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The Eucharistic Lord was their hope and their strength. Given the history of the Saracens at other convents, impending tortures and executions were feared. Come what may, the Lord of the universe was with them. He would have the final word. When the Saracens burst into the church, they were caught off guard. On the floor lay the nuns in adoration. The sisters did not react to the intrusion; their full attention was on the Lord. Not one woman was screaming in terror. The mercenaries became overcome with fear and fled. She told her sisters not tell anyone about the voice she heard, until after her death. This story from the life of St. Clare not only reveals her incredible devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and her deep trust in the Lords protection, but also the power of the Eucharist. Though she was feeble and sick, Saint Clare turned away an army and prevented an attack on the monastery in which she lived with her sisters by holding high the monstrance. This prayer attributed to Saint Clare demonstrates her devotion to Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament: I come, O Lord, unto Thy sanctuary to see the life and food of my soul. As I hope in Thee, O Lord, inspire me with that confidence which brings me to Thy holy mountain. Permit me, Divine Jesus, to come closer to Thee, that my whole soul may do homage to the greatness of Thy majesty; that my heart, with its tenderest affections, may acknowledge Thine infinite love; that my memory may dwell on the admirable mysteries here renewed every day, and that the sacrifice of my whole being may accompany Thine.Saint Pope John Paul II wrote of her, In reality Clares whole life was a Eucharist because, like Francis, from her cloister she raised up a continual thanksgivingto God in her prayer, praise, supplication, intercession, weeping, offering and sacrifice.

Do you wish to become a member of the Catholic Church by completing the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation)? Or, do you wish to complete your initiation into the Church through the reception of Eucharist or Confirmation? Or, do you just want to learn more about these sacraments and the teachings of the Church before you make a decision to enter into full communion with the Church community? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, or RCIA, is a communal process, composed of

fellow seekers, who are thinking about becoming members of the Roman Catholic Church. RCIA sessions usually begin in early fall and continue through Lent. The Sacraments are usually administered at the Easter Vigil. Members meet at their convenience to find answers to their questions about faith and the Church’s teachings from October through the Easter. Adult Confirmation: For those who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist, but have yet to complete their initiation into the Catholic Church, regional celebrations of the Sacrament are held in the fall and in the spring. Catechesis in the parish setting is required. To prepare for the reception of the Sacrament for persons 18 years and older, classes are required in the parish setting. These sessions are held as needed and at the convenience of those seeking to receive the sacrament. The Rite of Initiation for Children who wish to be baptized or to receive Holy Communion, usually meet after school hours in the parish collaborative offices. These classes are usually in addition to Family Faith Formation classes.

For more information on RCIA or to register for the sessions, contact Maureen at the collaborative offices.

Baptisms & First Communions: During COVID-19 Restrictions Baptisms are now administered on Saturdays. First Communions are celebrated at weekend Masses on Saturdays and Sundays. Parents wishing to schedule a Baptism or First Communion for their child should call or email the parish office Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm. Details for preparation for the reception of these Sacraments will be provided once a date has been chosen and confirmed.

FFF Registration for this Year: The results of our recent survey indicate that 59% of parish families would prefer that monthly presentations be posted on YouTube (and moreheart.tv) so that they will be available for viewing throughout the month. 33% of our families indicated that they would like to receive both printed and digital FF Lessons. In response to these preferences, our 2020-2021 the FFF 2020-21 Season will be as follows: Beginning in November, and every month thereafter, Father Sean will post his presentation designed for Adult/Parent formation. Monthly presentations designed for children will be posted and all registered families will receive a newsletter containing the latest FF news and activities for all ages. The month of October will include registration of families and parent meetings for families whose children are preparing to receive First Eucharist and Confirmation only. Registration is now open. On-line payment would be required at the time of registration. The fee to cover administration costs and materials will be twenty-five dollars ($25) for each child registered, or seventy-five dollars ($75) max per family. As always, if payment at this time would cause a hardship for any family, or if you have questions and concerns about this year’s program, please call Maureen at the business office. After registration is completed, you will receive your email to notify you of the monthly postings.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, " The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description." Pope Benedict XVI, as Cardinal Ratzinger, commented, " The repetition (of prayers) allows the soul to settle into tranquility and, holding fast to the Word, above all to the figure of Mary and to the images of Christ that pass you by, make your soul calm and free, and grant it a vision of God. It is a matter of allowing myself to be carried away by the calm of repetition and of steady rhythm. So much the more so, since this text does not lack content. It brings great images and visions, and above all the figure of Mary - and through her the figure of Jesus - before my eyes." Pope Saint John Paul II in his apostolic letter , " Rosarium Virginis Mariae" exhorted the faithful to use the rosary "to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ," and called it "a most effective means of fostering among the faithful that commitment to the contemplation of the Christian mystery" ("Rosarium Virginis Mariae," No. 5).

Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—October 4, 2020—-27th Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Isaiah may have sung the song mentioned in today’s First Reading (Isaiah 5) at the harvest festival known as the Feast of Tabernacles, where his singing would have been a welcome addition to the festival atmosphere. His singing would have attracted many listeners. Isaiah sings of his “beloved,” whom we know to be Yahweh. Yahweh -the Lord- developed a vineyard “on a very fertile hill” (v. 1). Once Yahweh chose the ideal place for His vineyard, according to Isaiah, He did every-thing He could to develop it into a successful vineyard. He re-moved the stones from the land to construct a wall around the vineyard. He used the excess stones to build a watchtower where a watchman could protect it from those who could harm His vineyard. Then “the owner” waited expectantly, but, when the harvest came, the vineyard produced wild (bitter, unusable) grapes. After singing his song, Isaiah asks his unsuspecting listeners to “judge between me and my vineyard” (v. 3). The prophet is no longer speaking in his own voice, but in Yahweh’s voice. Who is in the wrong—the owner, or the vineyard? Most of Isaiah’s audience would sympathize with the owner, because they, too, had probably been affected by bad grapes at some time in their lives. Yahweh asks Isaiah’s listeners, His Chosen People, the Jews: “What could have been done more to my vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I looked for it to yield grapes, did it yield wild grapes?” (v. 4). What could I have done differ-ently? What, He asks, has He failed to do? The answer is that He did everything that anyone could have expected.

Surprisingly, the Owner, the Lord, tells what He “will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be eaten up. I will break down its wall of it, and it will be trampled down” (v.5). By removing the hedge and breaking down the wall, the owner will make the vineyard accessible to anyone who wants to enter. Animals will wander through it and graze on the vines. The vineyard will be totally defenseless. Even more, the Owner will Himself “lay it a wasteland. It won’t be pruned nor hoed, but it will grow briers and thorns.” He will leave it untended so that briers and thorns overwhelm it. “I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.” (v. 6). Now, if they had not already realized the owner was the Lord, Isaiah’s listeners would probably ask, “Who is it that can command the clouds not to rain on the vineyard?” and Isaiah would explain: “For the vineyard of Yahweh of Armies is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant:” (v. 7). And, the vineyard is “the people of Judah.” Yahweh has chosen this people, formed them through the Law and the prophets. He has given them every opportunity to understand what He expects and to do what is right. He has led them through the desert to the Promised Land, provided laws to guide them. He sent the prophets to lead them back when they went astray. Yahweh has demonstrated His power and His love again and again. He fed them manna and gave them water to drink in the wilderness. But, now He will feed them ‘wild, bitter grapes.’ Why would Yahweh do this to His chosen people? Because “he looked for justice but, behold, oppression; for righteousness, but, behold, a cry of distress.” (v. 7) The owner (Yahweh) expected justice, i.e., a right relationship with Him and with each other. He expected them to be a righteous-right living-people, honest and impartial (Exodus 23:1-3, 6-8), taking care of widows, orphans, and other vulnerable people (Deuteronomy 24:17). Yahweh has done everything possible for Judah, and so He expected a harvest of justice and righteousness. They responded with bloodshed and a cry of anguish. The fault is not Yahweh’s but Judah’s. The people of Jerusalem tolerated injustice. They were unrepentant. They were not a righteous people.

Right living, or righteousness is what Saint Paul calls us to live in today’s Second Reading. Those who follow the Lord should seek: “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, what-ever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious…Then the God of peace will be with you” (Phil 4:8-9). We know that the people of Jesus’ time had ignored the words of the prophets, and as a result, Jerusalem was destroyed. Rather than finding the peace that Paul describes, they-because of their disobedience and unrepentance-experienced the “bloodshed and anguish” that Isaiah had prophesized. In Matthew’s Gospel (21:33-43) Jesus tells a parable that also features a vineyard. In this parable, as in Isaiah’s song, the own-er is the Lord and the vineyard is Israel. The tenants are the peo-ple of Israel and their religious leaders. The servants are the prophets. The Son is Jesus. Like Isaiah’s song, we are reminded that God established a covenant with Israel (planted a vineyard) and sent His servants (prophets) into the vineyard. But, the Israelites did not listen to God’s servants. In fact, some of God’s prophets were killed by the Jews. Their disobedience and willfulness led to their destruction. In Jesus’ parable, the tenants kill not only the servants that the Lord had sent to them, but they even killed His Son (Jesus). Like Isaiah, Jesus asks His listeners a question: “When therefore the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?” (v. 40). “They told him, “He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will lease out the vineyard to other farmers, who will give him the fruit in its season” (v. 41). Jesus answered them: “Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit" (v. 42). Jesus then became “the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.” Through the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus, the Old Covenant will be taken away from the Israelites and a New Covenant will be offered to all people. God leased the vineyard to other tenants (the church) who will “give him the fruit in its season” (v. 41). In Isaiah, Yahweh destroyed His vineyard, but in Jesus’ story reminds the Hebrews that-because of their continued disobedience-He will now transfer His vineyard, His Kingdom, to “other farmers.” All people who will accept the “stone that the builders rejected,” as their Savior and Lord, those who will follow His Law of Love, will now be welcomed into the vineyard (the Kingdom). Notice how many times Jesus mentions fruit in this parable. We, the Church, are the “other farmers,” and we are called to bear fruit, fruit that will endure (See Jn 15:16). The lesson in today’s readings is clear: those of us who profess to believe in Jesus, to accept Him as our Lord, must bear good fruit in the vineyard of the Lord. By our good deeds we must build up the Kingdom of God on earth. In another parable of the Sower and the Seed, Jesus makes this very clear: the seed represents the Gospel, the sower represents anyone who proclaims it, and the soils represent people's responses to it.

What will be our response to today’s Gospel? Are we willing to do all that we think, do and say to take care of the Vineyard in which the Lord has placed us? In our homes, in our neighborhoods, in our workplace, can all those we meet tell

we are Christians by our love for God and one another? Are we bearing the fruit that is the hallmark

of Christ’s disciples?
