The majority are cared for where it means the most, in their own home. We believe in being there for all the family. Deer Park, in Barnstaple, is our Bedded Unit which offers round-the-clock care, as well as a host of other ser- vices. Patients and families are at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is to promote the relief of symptoms for those with life-limiting illnesses, cancer, Motor Neu- rone Disease, heart failure, COPD and many more. We don't work in isolation, we are part of a much bigger team. We believe in sharing specialist knowledge and skills and working together with other pro- fessionals to enhance patient care. So our clinical teams work closely with GP Practices, District Nurses, Nursing and Residential Homes, Hospitals and Domiciliary Care Agencies. All our services are provided completely free of charge, but to do this, we need to raise over £4.5 million every year, from scratch. We are so grateful for every donation made to the Hospice. It means we can be there to help support a child whose parent is going through cancer, or care for a person at home whose symptoms have become more severe. Give North Devon a spring clean North Devon residents and groups are called on to give their local areas a spring clean, as Keep Britain Tidy's nationwide litter picking campaign returns in March. North Devon Council is backing the Great British Spring Clean by providing litter picking equipment and protective clothing for lo-cal events, as well as offering to collect litter by prior arrangement. The campaign is the country's biggest mass-action environmental campaign; last year, more than half a million people took part in clean-ups and more than 900,000 bags of litter were collected. This year, Keep Britain Tidy are aiming to get 600,000 #LitterHeroes involved in events between 20th March and 13th April. As one of the partners in the Plastic Free North Devon Consortium, we are also committed to tackling plastic pollution and the Great British Spring Clean is the ideal opportunity to reiterate this important message and encourage our resi-dents to help address it. Anyone interested in taking part in can sign up direct at www.keep britaintidy.org. To borrow equipment or arrange for a collection of litter, contact N Devon Council by email to adrian. [email protected] or phone to 01271 374776.

The new accommodation, by kind permission of Messrs Govier, will present a few challenges and changes for the organisers though all are optimis-tic of another successful event with hopefully wall to wall sunshine for all of the weekend.

Devon Highlights Many people feel lonely now and again - but for a worrying number of older people, the feeling of loneliness can be overwhelming and have a dam-aging impact on physical and mental wellbeing. Sadly, two fifths of all older people say that the television is their main company (Age UK, 2014). Devon Highlights is a project led by Devon Com-munities Together, that supports older people (aged 55+) living in rural areas of Devon. High-lights groups run, every fortnight in Chulmleigh’s St Mary Magdalene Church on Wednesdays from 11am–2pm. These warm and welcoming sessions are shaped by the members themselves according to their interests and hobbies, and provide individuals with the chance to get to know new people in their community, explore different activities and interests, and improve their mental and physical wellbeing. Highlights sessions are free and re-freshments are provided. If you are an individual or know an individual from Chulmleigh or around who may like to join us, please get in touch. Additionally, we are trying to connect in with the community fabric by linking with other groups, and are especially seeking volunteer drivers to help community members unable to drive and also volunteers to help create a welcoming at-mosphere at groups. Contact Harry.Bonnell@ Devoncommunities.org.uk 01392 248919 The Highlights project is supported by the National Lottery’s Community Fund and HM Government – together forming the Building Connections Fund.

Safe Sleep service helping rough sleepers A month into a winter shelter project for the homeless, North Devon Council are reminding rough sleepers to take advantage of the service during this cold weather. The Safe Sleep project opened at the Salvation Army on 2nd January, with the aim of providing a warm and safe place for up to 20 rough sleepers. The service will provide refreshments and a warm bed up until 31st March this year, ensuring that homeless people from the North Devon and Torridge Districts are able to choose to sleep in a secure, warm and dry place during the cold win-ter months. The project also enables individuals to establish and maintain relationships with welfare profes-sionals from a range of government and volun-tary organisations. This support helps to over-come common obstacles to finding accommoda-tion – such as lack of I.D. or a rental deposit – and creates an environment in which people are able to help themselves by accessing assistance to reintegrate with the community and find homes. During January, the service offered 216 bed spaces of accommodation, with 29 different peo-ple. Of these, seven have now been housed or, through negotiation, have been able to return to their accommodation. North Devon Council’s Lead Member for Hous-ing, Councillor Nicola Topham said: “We are so pleased that Safe Sleep has been able to help. We would like to remind anyone without a roof over their head that the centre's doors are open to them. We would like to thank the Salvation Ar-my, the Food Bank and the team of volunteers for their ongoing support, as well as the public for the generous donations they've made." If you believe you are at risk of becoming home-less, get in touch with North Devon Council as soon as you can on 01271 388870 or email [email protected].

Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon A new exhibition displaying the work of British photographer James Ravilious is now open at the Museum of Barnstaple and N Devon. "An Eye for Life", is a collection of Ravilious’s black and white photographs of rural life in north Devon, offering an unparalleled view of the landscape, communi-ties and agricultural practices over seventeen years, starting in the 1970s. The Exhibition runs in conjunction with the new annual ‘Documentary Photography Open’ compe-tition, which aims to provide a platform for ama-teur and established contemporary photogra-phers looking to improve their exposure, enhance their practice and help document North Devon.

Just Sing community choir meets every Wednesday in term time from 7-8.30pm at the Scout Hut in Southley Road, S Molton. It’s a small, friendly group of very mixed ability, cur-rently enjoying working on a mixture of show songs and traditional music from around the world. The aim is to perform in community set-tings - Eastleigh Care Home and the Pannier Market, for example - and to enjoy the social and mental health benefits of a cheerful weekly vocal workout. No prior experience is required.

Concerts at Barkham We are just beginning to get off the ground with events here, having moved to the area less than eighteen months ago. As well as traditional even-ing concerts, we are piloting a Family Concert on 7th March, when youngsters will have the oppor-tunity to hear short movements from the evening’s programme and other pieces, along with discovering what the instruments can do, ask as many questions as they like and try out some instruments for themselves. This will be in a very relaxed environment, with light refreshments included. Barkham has been validated as a Learning Destination for the Devon and Cornwall branch of the Children’s University, under the auspices of the University of Plymouth. We are planning not only to offer more of the same format in the future, but also looking to col-laborate with local schools to offer bespoke events for them, as well as short courses and retreats for adults. Barkham’s 13x5 metre gallery will be familiar to some readers as a venue for classical music. In recent months, it has also been enjoyed by quilt-ers, Pilates and yoga teachers and others need-ing a warm, quiet space with good lighting; watch this space for future events for writers and artists, too. If readers are interested in hosting a local event or weekly activity, please contact Leonie and Simon directly at barkham.farm @gmail.com or leave a message on 01643 831841. See the Diary pages for forthcoming concert dates.

Home Guard Martin Macro of the Sportsmans Inn at Sandy-way on Exmoor is staging an exhibition from Sat-urday 2nd May through to Sunday 31st May. Entitled ‘Look, Duck, Vanish’ the exhibition marks the 80th anniversary of the War Minister Anthony Eden's call for Local Defence Volunteers on the evening of 14th May 1940. These volunteers would then form the Home Guard as we know it today. The exhibition will feature the Battalions in the West Country, focus-sing on North Devon and the mounted troops of Exmoor. If you have any photos, equipment or paperwork which you would be prepared to lend for the du-ration of the exhibition, please get in touch. In addition any stories or reminisces would be glad-ly received. Please contact martinmacro@ btinternet.com.

Below are the different roles you can become involved with at the Museum – Museum Host Kitchen and Tearoom Shop and Tourist Information Museum Collections Learning and Events To become a volunteer download a volunteer ap-plication form from the “Getting Involved” page of our website. Permit will help care and health workers Currently care and health professionals who hold the existing permit, can park in on-street, limited waiting and residents’ parking bays for no charge, when delivering essential services to res-idents in their homes. Holders of the new Care and Health Worker Parking Permit will additionally be allowed to park on yellow lines for up to an hour – but only if there is no other parking available - if they are making a home visit, the permit is clearly dis-played and the vehicle is not causing an obstruc-tion. The parked vehicle must not block access or pose a danger to road users by, for instance, parking on a corner. The improved scheme is being launched initially as a year-long pilot and the changes are in recognition that in some communities parking can be difficult to find. For those working for care and health companies, agencies or organisations, including the NHS, the permits will be managed and distributed by their line manager. Sole practitioners providing care and support to Devon clients in their homes can register their interest by emailing [email protected].

Exmoor Young Voices Charity

Exmoor Young Voices is a charity that advocates for young people on the moor. An initiative of Ex-moor National Park, our organisation was set up to give young people a chance to voice their con-cerns regarding housing, planning, employment, transport and connectivity. Currently, we have over 80 members and are supported by several local authorities and housing associations. Our meetings are held quarterly at The Rest and Be Thankful Inn, Wheddon Cross. We have also succeeded in hosting a summit with representatives from the Councils, housing associations and Exmoor National Park to dis-cuss how they can help, support and make changes for young people. We are currently in the process of securing pledges. EYV is going from strength to strength and our voices are be-ing heard by local councillors here on Exmoor, all the way to MPs in Westminster! If you are inter-ested in joining EYV, we’d love to see you at our next meeting. Keep an eye out on our brand new website and social media pages for more infor-mation. We’re also keen to hear from anyone who has experienced difficulties with any of the issues mentioned above and would be happy to help form a case study.
