The Ministers of Care need your help . . . The Ministry of Care at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church has as its purpose uniting with the Lord's sacrifice and our community all those who are unable, due to ill-ness or infirmity, to be present at Mass. Sent forth from the liturgy to bring Communion to the sick, the Ministers of Care represent Christ, and manifest faith and charity on behalf of our parish for its members who are ill. Our parish is blessed by the participation of so many in this important ministry of comfort and concern for our sick members. At this time, however, we are in need of addi-tional ministers. If you would like to know more about becoming a part of this important ministry, please contact Denis Wilkins at (562) 760-5281, Kelly O'Rourke at (562) 694-1770 or Pauline McLachlan at (562) 245-7713, or call the parish office. We need English and Spanish-speaking ministers.

Clouds and Silver Linings With sadness, we say farewell to Dr. Vicente Chavar-ria (“ V” to most), who had been serving as director of the Gloria Dei Choir since 2011. V took a leave this past year to do a post-doctoral program at the University of Leuven in Belgium, hoping eventually to return to his po-sition here as director of the Gloria Dei Choir. However, V recently informed Fr. Ed that he would not be able to re-turn to OLG. In an e-mail to Fr. Ed, V said the following:
Thank you for an amazing last couple years, and thank you to Fr. Mac and all the OLG staff for making my 4 years there one of the best and most enjoyable jobs I've had. You all welcomed me like family, and I will never be able to repay that kindness and generosi-ty. Know that whenever I'm in Southern California, I'll swing by La Habra for Mass.
And thank you, V, for sharing your musical talents, great wit and innate goodness! May God bless you always, and we do expect to see you from time to time here at OLG! There is a silver lining to this cloud! Dr. Kevin St. Clair, who had been serving as interim director of the Gloria Dei Choir, has accepted the position on a permanent basis. Kevin has come to us with a wealth of musical talent, knowledge and experience, including time with the Pacific Chorale, Long Beach Opera, and university teaching ex-perience. So let us welcome Kevin as director (interim no more!) of the Gloria Dei Choir! He already has led the Gloria Dei Choir this past year in ministering to us with some fabulous music, so we are delighted that he will remain a part of our OLG parish family!

What is Baptism? Baptism is the way out of the kingdom of death into life, the gateway to the Church, and the beginning of a lasting communion with God … It unites us with Jesus Christ, incorporates us into his redemptive death on the Cross, thereby freeing us from the pow-er of Original Sin and all personal sins, and causes us to rise with him to a life without end.
Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church (“YOUCAT”) 194.
We recently added some information about infant Baptism to the parish website – see the webpage “Infant Baptism” for the pamphlets "Baptizing Your Baby: Information About Infant Baptisms" and "After Your Baby’s Baptism: Raising Your Young Child in the Catholic Christian Faith." Please take special note of the section in “After Your Baby’s Bap-tism” about “Take Your Child to Sunday Mass!”
Note that “Infant Baptism” is for children up to five years of age. Baptism of children six years of age and older hap-pens as part of our Faith Formation program, “Christian Initiation of Children Who Have Reached Catechetical Age” (“RCIA for Children”). Please see the parish website (including the webpage “First Communion and other Faith Formation Programs for Children in Grades 1-5”) for addi-tional information.
Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church (“YOUCAT”) 194.

Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir Happy Mother’s Day! As we observe the holiday and celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Gloria Dei Choir sings a setting of Ave Maria in Latin with music by Jacques (Jacob) Arcadelt. Arcadelt (ca. 1507–1568) was a French–Flemish composer who composed hundreds of madrigals to secular texts, includ-ing Nous voyon que les hommes, upon which Pierre-Louis Diestch (1808–1865) based his arrangement of Ar-cadelt’s work in the form you hear it today. The original madrigal was composed for three female voice parts; the tenor line is fashioned from the lowest female voice part and the bass part is entirely Dietsch’s own work. Later arrangers have adjusted the text underlay and phrasing to suit their tastes. Along with serving as chorus master at the Paris Opera, Dietsch was choirmaster at the Made-leine Church in Paris and wrote this arrangement for his choir of men and boys there. During communion, Charles Welling and I will present Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Call,” a solo movement from his Five Mystical Songs for soloist, chorus, and or-chestra or organ. The text is by the Anglican priest and metaphysical poet George Herbert (1593-1633), who wrote devotional poetry in English, Latin, and Greek. This lovely setting has found its way into several Protestant denominational hymnals, rearranged as a congregational song. Inspired in part by John 14:6, this profound text re-wards quiet contemplation:
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Such a Way, as gives us breath: Such a Truth, as ends all strife: Such a Life, as killeth death.
Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a Light, as shows a feast: Such a Feast, as mends in length: Such a Strength, as makes his guest.
Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: Such a Joy, as none can move: Such a Love, as none can part: Such a Heart, as joys in love.
—Kevin St. Clair, Director Gloria Dei Choir
