June 2017 OUR SCHOOL - COMMITTED TO QUALITY AND EXPECTING THE BEST FROM EVERY STUDENT HOLSWORTHY HIGH SCHOOL Website: http://www.holsworthy-h.schools.nsw.edu.au One of the many highlights in recent weeks at Holsworthy High School was the first round of a new competition we have started involving primary school students called the “Holsworthy High School Challenge Cup”. A competition round will be held each term, with the winners of each round holding the trophy at their school for that term. Year 5 students from Hammondville, Holsworthy and Wattle Grove Public Schools participated in public speaking and a spelling bee. Congratulations to the team from Holsworthy Public School who won round 1. As impressive as the Year 5 students from each school were, equally outstanding were our Year 8 students who chaired the event and ran the competitions. Lily Bolin, Faith Couch, Emma Isaacs, Aren Dunn, Connor Moloney, Leon Astafiev, Isabel Tymosiewicz, Tess Walker and James Power represented themselves and our school with distinction. Many thanks to Mrs Davis who organised the successful event and to Ms Dunn, Mrs Griffin and Mrs Bailey for their assistance on the day. We have received some phone calls from members of the public concerned about a small number of our students and their safety when crossing roads or riding their bikes or scooters to and from school. We speak to students regularly about safety in general and road safety specifically and would appreciate it if you could reinforce this message with your children at home. Finally, we are seeking some professional landscaping advice for the front of the school. We have recently had an electronic sign installed and would now like to add some new gardens that are cost effective and easy to maintain. We would love to hear from any of our parents who are able to provide this service and are willing to donate a small amount of time to discuss ideas with us. If you are able to assist, please email the school at [email protected]

HOLSWORTHY HIGH SCHOOL Website: http://www.holsworthy-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

TO PARENTS / CARERS Examinations and the reporting period have

made this term a busy one for teachers and students alike. Students should be rewarded for their efforts and receive targeted feedback from each of their subject areas for this semester. Year Advisers are always available to provide additional advice and support to students.

The student body has responded enthusiastically to the new merit system and are enjoying the positive feedback it provides. Parents are also able to track merits given to their children via the parent portal. Year 8 students have already collectively accumulated 1099 merit points this term. Thanks to Ms Harvey for her work in promoting the system.

Students in Year 10 worked diligently through their exam week. The formal exams are held in the hall and help to prepare students for the demands of senior study. Year 10 reports will be distributed later this term. Some students need to resolve outstanding 'N' Awards. ‘N’ Awards can directly impact upon students’ ability to achieve a ROSA. (Record of School Achievement)

Year 12 students should carefully consider the feedback provided through their first semester reports. They need to consolidate their understanding of topics and build upon their strengths. They have time to significantly improve upon their results and should seek individual assistance where needed from their class teachers. It can be a very challenging time for students. We have two school counsellors, Ms Collier and Mr Fracarossi, who can provide advice to students who may be having difficulty managing the demands of senior study. Parents can contact them directly or seek access for their child through the Year Adviser, Head Teacher Welfare or Deputy.

Dear Parents and Carers

Holsworthy High School will transition to the new NSW public schools’ finance system and a new bank account on 24 July 2017.

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept parent or carer payments.

1. EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 17 July and 28 July 2017. Please ensure that you made any outstanding EFTPOS payments before 17 July 2017. From 31 July 2017, EFTPOS payments will be accepted as before.

2. Cash and cheque payments: Between 17 July and 28 July 2017, we will also not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding cash or cheque payments before 17 July 2017. From 31 July 2017, cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new finance system. If you have any questions, please contact Lynne Cole - Adminiistration Manager Holsworthy High School on 02 9825 2888.

ENGLISH and

DRAMA NEWS

28 Year 12 Standard English students went to watch a performance of The Shoe-Horn Sonata by John Misto at the Giant Dwarf Theatre, Redfern on Tuesday 30 May, accompanied by Mr Radwanowski and Mr Pilja.

Students have studied this play in class as part of the HSC Module Experience through Language - Distinctively Visual. John Misto in a dramatic tribute to the memory of female internees in Japanese POW camps during WWII compellingly transports audiences back in time to wartime Singapore. Misto has argued that he did not ‘have the power to build a memorial so I wrote a play instead’ that explored ‘the stories we don’t tell about war’. The play poses questions about the way history is con-structed. Watching this play with its universal themes of hope, surviv-al and loyalty will sup-port students’ study of this text for the HSC English exam.

Thank you to Ms Portolan HT for organising this day.

The Year 8 Enrichment English class briefly participated in a Sydney Water project-based unit of work. The activities centered around the power of persuasion in regards to choosing tap water over bottled water. They engaged in group discussion activities, practical activities, as well as

video case studies. Students will find these skills extremely valuable when they begin their upcoming topic ‘Public Speaking’. Sydney Water has sent each student a limited edition refillable water bottle and keychain to thank them for participating in the project. Well done Year 8!

Round 1 - HHS Challenge Cup Update:

WOO HOO... today our Year 8 Leadership Team hosted HHS's very first Challenge Cup involving students from Holsworthy, Wattle Grove and Hammondville Primary schools.

Our Year 8 student hosts would like to thank everyone for attending and congratulate all students who participated in this terms Public Speaking and Spelling Bee challenge.

We agree with the positive feedback on the day and would like to thank Mr Watkins for assisting to organise a unique opportunity for our feeder Primary school students to test their skills in a supportive atmosphere surrounded by like minded students.

This was a great opportunity for our Year 8 stu-dents, who ran the event, to further their leader-ship skills and meet future students of HHS.

Our Year 8 Leadership Team felt everyone did a really great job and hoped that the students had a great time.

Thanks again,

Isabel, Tess, Faith, Leon, James, Lily, Emma, Aren and Connor (Year 8 Leadership Team).

Ours school choir had a fantastic experience on 16 May when they performed for the very first time at “In Concert” in Sydney Town Hall. This is a wonderful concert where students from public schools all around NSW have the opportunity to participate in vocal and instrumental performances. The event is run by the Arts Unit and is a great opportunity for secondary school students to display their talents.

Our choir performed as part of the Combined Secondary Schools Choir and sang a variety of repertoire ranging from Classical to Popular, and two movements from “Jandamarra” which was sung in an indigenous dialect. Abigail Revie in Year 10 also featured in the NSW Public Schools Singers.

We were pleased to see our Principal, Mark Watkins, in the audience as well as our previous Principal, John Frew. It meant a lot to our students to have their support.

A big thank you also to the parents who attended.

Our choir is currently made up of students from every year group in the school but we would love to see some new faces join us. The choir rehearses on Tuesdays at lunchtime in Music Room 1

Once again, a big congratulations to all the students who participated in this wonderful event.

Mrs Allen and Mrs Kenneally (Choir Directors)

Defence Transition Mentor Update .We are now coming to the end of half yearly exams and I hope everyone is happy with their results. Remembering though, if you think you could have done better make sure you strive to improve in your yearly exams and always aim high in regards to your student responsibilities. At the end of last term I mentioned how our volunteers had been hard at work preparing care packages for our defence force overseas to arrive by ANZAC day. We are happy to include in this update a lovely email and photo from the recipients. Well done volunteers, this makes all your hard work worthwhile.

Good morning Holsworthy High Volunteering Team,

We were so happy to receive your care package, thank you very much. Messages and packages from home mean so much to deployed members who are away from their loved ones for a long time.

My name is Linda and I am in charge of the Contract Management Cell, and Procurement Liaison Cell, for the Middle East Region. This is a mixed team of uniformed and Australian Public Service employees.

Not many people know that APS personnel deploy to the Middle east as well as ADF members in uniform. We work for Defence too, just wear civilian clothe! There are only 32 of us across the region, but we have core skills that are needed here and so we deploy along side the uniformed personnel, working and living together for six months wherever we are assigned.

Our team is a great example of how Australians come together to get the job done, I have attached a photo of us all. Thank you again for our package, we love our treats and it made our day.

Take care and remember the importance of love, respect and tolerance, so we can all get along as well as our team here, and maybe one day not have to deploy at all.

Regards Linda Reardon Contract Manager

DONATIONS REQUIRED (Beanies for The Benefit):

Holsworthy High School in conjunction with a well know family in the community is hosting a Benefit Night on 29th July 2017 for one of our students who is suffering a serious illness.

Our hope is to raise as much money as possible for the student and their family.

As part of the night there will be lots of prizes on offer through raffles and silent auctions.

We would also like to make some money by selling beanies (Beanies for Cancer) at the door.

These can be purchased quite cheaply and ALL proceeds will go directly to the family.

To assist with this all we ask is that you donate 1 or more NEW beanies.

They can be purchased at many places at very competitive prices. Kmart have beanies for $3, Targets prices start at $4, Big W prices start at $3 and many other shops from as low as $2.

The beanies can be dropped off at HHS front office between 9am and 3pm.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.

Beanie donations
