Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14D,

The Lions Year for 2012-2013 is winding down, but as District Governor Lion Joan will tell you, do not think it is over until I get pinned in Hamburg, Germany! We have about five weeks to get new members and get the ground plans at least on the table for new clubs in the District.

The District Governor's Team just returned from the State Convention in King of Prussia, and it was a Grand time for all who attended. One great thing about conventions is networking! It is unbelievable how much information you can get just by sitting and listening to other Lions talk about the happenings in their clubs and Districts. Just attending a Council Meeting will open your eyes to the happenings around the state and what happens for the betterment of the State. Motions are made that affect us all, and unless you get to see the Council Minutes, you don't get how much thought from the 18 District Governors went into the vote. It surely opened my eyes, and I can hardly wait for my year to start, so I can start working with my 17 District Governor brothers and sisters to keep the Great Lions State of Pennsyl-vania strong in LIONISM! There is a lot to do getting my year off to a running start, and I will have my calendar ready for the July Newslet-ter. It is nearly done, but a couple of dates are twisted around, so I need to do more work on it. If any club wants to know the date of my visit next year before the July newsletter is published, please call or email me and I will get it to you. I will tell you that the Passing of the Banner will be July 31, at Millersville State University at Gordinier Hall & Bolger Conference Center. A reservation form is on page 8 of this newsletter. Please make your reservations right away. On June 30, I will head to New Jersey to take a plane to Hamburg, Germany, for the Lions International Con-vention. I am looking forward to this trip, as I have never been out of the United States. I am looking forward to meeting the new International President, Lion Barry Palmer, whom I have been talking to on Face Book since last year. As a Dis-

trict Governor-Elect, I still have much training to do in Hamburg. My group leader is Past Interna-tional Director Tony Benlow. He has been telling our group the many things that we will be look-ing at in our training. It seems that I have homework to do even before I get on the plane. I do know that there are 18 DGEs from Pennsylvania going on the trip and that there are a number of Pennsylvania Lions going as well. I am looking forward to seeing our own Past Council Chair Cindy Gregg being elected to an International Director position. We will not know if she will be on the ballot until we get to Hamburg, but we are hoping and praying that she is. In closing, I want to take time to thank a couple of people who have helped me to get to

the honorable position of District Governor for District 14-D: Lion Stephen Grosh, PDG Lion Walter and Lion Sharon Lesher, PDG Rodney Sweger, PCC Lion Steve Benedict, the Millersville Lions Club. There are three Lions who have passed on who also helped me, and I would not feel right if I did not mention them. They are DG Fred Lenhart, his wife Lion Sandy, and the very first person I asked about if I could do the job of District Governor, Lion Jan Sweger. I think of these people often, and I know they are all watching over me. As always, if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact me at 717-293-9280 at home, 717-824-1744 on my cell, or via email at [email protected].

We are a team in 14-D, and there is no "I" in team! We, the District Governor's Team, strive for the betterment of the Lions in both Lebanon and Lancaster counties!

Lion John "Jack" V. Sauders District Governor Elect

Lions District 14-D Roar Lions, Roar!

Greetings from 1st Vice District Governor

Changing of the (Editorial) Guard

Thank you to all District officers and committee chairpersons and to the clubs who sent information for the

District newsletters during the past two years. It has been my pleasure to serve as newsletter editor. But now it is

time to turn the task over to someone else. See page 14 for information about your new editors, and please support

them by sending your articles and photos for publication in the District newsletter. Lion Joanna Smith

Lions, Lionesses, and Leos,

May came in like a Lion and also has gone out like a Lion. Our weather has

been completely unpredictable, and I for one am ready for the hot days of summer

to arrive. I have had enough cold and windy days.

Our state convention in Valley Forge is now history. The Lions of District R

did a great job hosting this event, and I believe that all in attendance had a won-

derful time. There were many informative workshops and lots of excitement as we voted to endorse PCC

Lion Cindy Gregg as the Pennsylvania-endorsed candidate for International Director . The vote was

unanimous, and Pennsylvania will be well represented by Lion Cindy. I wish her the best as she travels

to Germany to hopefully come home as our newest International Director. We also were honored by hav-

ing International President Wayne Madden attend the convention this year.

As our Lion’s year winds down, please try to concentrate on membership retention and avoid losing

members at the end of the year. Give those Lions that are possible losses a call and let them know you

care and that they are important to your Club. Find ways to work with them when there are difficult

situations instead of just dropping them. Let’s have a great June and keep every hand we have to help

better serve our local communities. We have GREAT clubs in our District, and I know you can do it! I

have faith in you.

Thoughts from the 2nd Vice District Governor

Lions Night at the Reading Phillies

Friday, July 26

Again this summer, we have baseball tickets for the 2013 Reading Phillies, who now have a new name –

Fightin’ Phillies.

Buffet tickets are available for $25 per person. The buffet ticket includes your game ticket. Remember, if

you purchase a buffet ticket, you will have 2 1/2 hours of eating, plus drinks all evening. You will be sitting on the

third baseline, right in the middle of the action! The buffet offers BBQ ribs, BBQ chicken, hamburgers, cheese-

burgers, hot dogs, etc. Just 80 buffet tickets are available, so do not hesitate!

The date is July 26, one night only this year. In case of rain, another date will be provided. There’ll be fire-

works at the end of the game. What a way to spend a Friday evening! Consider making this an outing for your

entire club. General admission tickets are 50 for $100.

Money from this fundraiser will be used to help defray the cost of the 2015 State Convention to be hosted

by District 14D. Clubs may purchase game tickets by contacting PDG Bosh Lesher at 717-336-2408 or 420 Sandy

Hill Road, Denver, PA 17517. Consider tickets for your neighborhood baseball team, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts,

senior center, neighbors, and family.

The Lioness Corner GREETINGS “FAB 4”,

It’s on its way into the Lioness history book …

Yes, the 2012-13 Lioness year is about over except for the

cheering and that “lady” that is supposed to sing!!! New officers will

be installed as the “Fab 4” head into the future. But what a year it has

been! All Clubs outdid themselves in raising funds for their commu-

nity and beyond and have contributed to the District Governor’s

Goals. We’ve had an increase in membership, and now the goal is to

hold onto those new Lionesses. We can do that by listening to them, going forward with change, and gradu-

ally moving them into the “how-we-serve” mode by igniting their passion for helping those less fortunate

through joint efforts, which lead to the rewards of a job well done and the fellowship of Lionesses working

side by side. There is nothing better than to see a plan come together for good.

The presidents and officers of your Club have led you well and deserve that “pat on the back”! May you

continue to prosper and serve in the great District 14-D. I am proud to be a Lititz Lioness; it is where I started

my journey in 1982. And I am so very proud of the “Fab 4.” Hang in there, grow strong, and work toward

better things to come as you step into the 2013-14 Lioness adventure.

Thank you for the hospitality that you have shown me as I visited your Clubs. I’ll be hanging around as

your Lioness Coordinator. Business as usual!

Lioness Co. Kathy

P.S. I attended Lions MD14 State Convention in May, and while there I attended the Lioness/Ladies Break-

fast where I, along with 15 other Pennsylvania Lionesses, received the "Pennsylvania Lioness of the Year"

award. I am very honored by this and consider it an award for the "Fab. 4," who continue to serve and shine in

District 14-D.

District 14-D will host the State Convention in 2015, and I'll be looking for ideas for the Lioness/

Ladies Breakfast, which will be a stage to show off District 14-D Lionesses!

Heidelberg Lionesses Honor Centenarian Member

At their 30th anniversary Charter night on May 9, Heidelberg Twp. Lioness

Club honored a very special member, Lioness Dorothy Horst (right in photo). Dorothy,

who celebrated her 100th birthday May 30, was honored with a corsage presented by

Club President Betty DeLong (left in photo). Lioness Dorothy attends most club meet-

ings and is still interested in the club’s service projects.

Hers is quite a Lions/Lioness family. Her late husband, Clarence, became a

member of the local Lions Club about three years after it was chartered, and Lioness

Dot is a charter member of the Lioness club. Together they were active in their clubs

and attended various state and international conventions.

And it goes on! Three daughters, Lionesses Yvonne Balsbaugh, Peg Welch,

and Judy Werner, are charter members of the Lioness club and active in all of the

club’s projects. But it doesn't stop there. Two sons-in-law, Amos Balsbaugh and Jake

Werner, are active members in the Lions Club. The third son-in-law, Sam Welch, is

deceased.

Imagine!! A whole family of Lions and Lionesses who believe in our mottoes

"We Serve" and “We Serve, Too.”

June 2013

As I end my term as District Leo Coordinator, I would like to thank all Lions Clubs who sponsor a Leo Club and the Leo Advisors for their work with the Leo Clubs. These are our future Lions. This will be my final article as the school based clubs are finishing for the year with the school year ending.

The Manheim Township Leo Club helped the Manheim Township Lions at their annual pancake breakfast. They also collected 30 books in support of the Lions Clubs RAP program. The Ephrata High School Leo Club continues to help monthly at the Ephrata Library by helping with children’s crafts on a Monday and this month held a brunch for teacher appreciation day. They will be holding a food drive on June 1st at Redner’s.

In my last article, I failed to recognize the District Leo of the Year. She is Anna Downey of Manheim Township Leo Club.

A reminder, as your Leo Club elects their officers for the next year, the Lion Advisor should go to MyLCI to reg-ister your new officers. Also, please send me the form listing your new officers.

Yours in Lionism,

Lion Bonnie L. Eberly

Lancaster Lions Honor 75 Year Member

Members of the Lancaster Lions Club recently honored Lion Marion Mort, their most senior

member. Born in 1915, Lion Mort owned Lancaster Paper Supply, where he began his 53-year career in

1938. In the same year he became an active member of the Lancaster Lions Club. Going through the

chairs, Lion Mort served as club president 1968-1969.

Lion Mort (shown with club president Amanda Herr)

has proven to be the most dedicated Lion in the history of

the Lancaster Lions Club. He celebrated 70 years of perfect

attendance in 2008, before he and his wife Louise moved to

Country Meadows. The club celebrated Lion Mort’s 75th

anniversary as a Lancaster Lion by meeting at his retire-

ment home in April. The club also recognized Lion Mort for

his 75 years of service by donating $250 to the Beacon

Lodge “Buy a Brick” program.

Lancaster Lions Club members offer a big ROAR to

Lion Marion Mort for his continuing service!

Nomination and Selection of District Melvin Jones Fellowship

PURPOSE:

To provide guidelines on the nomination and selection process of District 14-D for a Melvin Jones

Fellowship to be presented to a Lion from each Region and a Lioness.

GENERAL:

1. Each Lionistic year, District 14-D may present a Melvin Jones Fellowship to a Lion per Region

along with a Lioness based on nominations from the Lions/Lioness clubs.

2. Nominations pertain to New Melvin Jones Fellowships only and not Progressive Fellowships.

3. The LCIF Chairperson must submit in the District Newsletter information and instructions, along

with a deadline, on how to nominate a Lion/Lioness. This must be submitted at least two months before the

deadline.

4. Only Clubs that contributed to the District as per the Contribution Schedule for LCIF, which

is set each year by the District Governor, may submit a nominee for a District Melvin Jones Fellow-

ship.

For example: If the per member contribution is $5.00 and your club has 20 members you would need

to contribute $5.00 X 20 members or $100.00 to be able to submit a nominee.

5. All nominations must be board approved and signed by either the Club President or Secretary,

preferably by the President where possible.

6. All nominations MUST be submitted on club stationery providing the qualifications of the nominee

and sent to the LCIF Chairperson and a copy to the District Secretary by the established deadline.

7. Within a month after the deadline, the LCIF Chairperson must call a meeting and based on the re-

ceived nominations select the Lion/Lioness from each region and Lioness clubs that will received a Melvin

Jones Fellowship from District 14-D.

The final decision, will be made by a Committee consisting of the District Governor, the last Past Dis-

trict Governor from each Region, Cabinet Secretary, and Cabinet Treasurer.

Note: The process will be: The above Lions will assess those nominated in each Region, assigning

1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. positions to each nominee, the #1 position will receive the Melvin Jones Award. If there

are extra dollars available for awards, the #2 positions will be considered for the remaining awards, etc.

*The 1st Vice District Governor, 2nd Vice District Governor, LCIF Chairperson, Lioness Coordinator,

and the Region Chairpersons will also be present to give input on any nominees that they know. They do

NOT have voting rights.

*The District Governor at the time of the selection process will present the Melvin Jones Fellowships

at a later date, preferably at the following year’s Region Rallies when he/she is the Immediate Past District

Governor.

Deadline to submit a Melvin Jones candidate is June 03, 2013

to LCIF Chairperson Dale L High, PDG, 137 Fieldcrest Lane, Gordonville, PA 17529

New Editors for 2013-14 District Newsletters

Lion Bonnie and IPDG Bob Eberly will do the District Newsletter in the coming year. Thanks to Lion Joanna Smith for the great job she did with the District Newsletter. We hope to continue to provide the most informative and interesting district newsletters as Lion Joanna created. As Lion Joanna needed the help of Lions, Lionesses, and Leos, we also need your help to receive informa-tion each month.

As previously, we ask that information and pictures be sent to us by 25th of the month be-fore the next newsletter. Club newsletters as well as fliers of upcoming events should be sent to PDG Bruce Carpenter, Information Technology co-chair; Lion Dominick Raimato, Publicity chair/ Information Technology co-chair; and Newsletter Editors, Lion Bonnie and PDG Bob. (See contact information below.) PDG Bruce will make sure information goes on the website, and Lion Dominick will share the information on Facebook and Twitter, as well as submitting articles to publications. Lion Bonnie, Lion Dominick, PDG Bruce, and I will share information among us so that the pertinent news gets out by as many means as possible.

Our goal is to get the monthly district newsletter out by the 1st of the month. It would be ad-visable to get fliers or information of club or district event activities in at least two months prior to your event. We look forward to doing our best to share the news of the district.

LCIF Requests Donations for Oklahoma Relief

A tragic event occurred in the United States recently when a deadly tornado touched down in Oklahoma, kill-ing over 20 people, including children, as well as destroying schools, a hospital, and many homes in Moore.

A donor in Vancouver, Canada, was so moved by the stories of individual bravery and survival from Oklahoma that he donated US$1,000 to the disaster relief fund at Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) as a challenge to other Lions to match his donation. A match does not need to be the full $1,000, but can be any amount - even US$1. Through local Lions efforts, this money will be used for immediate relief and long term reconstruction. To match this donation, contact LCIF or donate at https://www.lcif.org/EN/ways-to-give/lion-disaster-donation.php. All donations to the disaster relief fund are Melvin Jones Fellowship eligible.

Many other Lions across the US and the world have also responded to the devastation in Oklahoma. A club in Michigan had a club meeting Tuesday night and members donated over US$3,000. More donations are on the way from clubs across the district. Districts in Florida and Virginia are sending truckloads of relief supplies to the scene. Donations have come in from Ontario and Prince Edward Island in Canada and from many clubs in the US.

Please be generous in your donations to assist disaster relief and reconstruction. Thank you! LCIF Development

International President Wayne Madden makes a

point during his address to Multiple District 14

Lions at the International Banquet on Saturday

evening during State Convention in Valley

Forge.

After some cajoling and rehearsal, IP Madden

directed the Pennsylvania Lions All-State Band

in a rendition of the Notre Dame Fight Song.

(Editor’s note: These young musicians are so

good they don’t really need a director!)

Above are some of the 14 D Lions who attended the 90th State Convention in Valley Forge May 16

through 19. Our District was well represented at the convention. Every Lion should consider attending

state convention in Pittsburgh (14 B) in 2014 and when our District hosts the convention in 2015.
