The Breath of God
Dear Brothers and Sister in Christ, Have you ever been swimming underwater, and for whatever reason, felt like you were about to run out of breath? It is a scary feeling, for sure. On a regular basis, from day-to-day, we rarely even think about the air we breathe unless we struggle with asthma, emphysema or other respiratory problem. Today on Pentecost Sunday, we have the opportunity to reflect on the Holy Spirit who is the Breath of God. Often times, we as Catholic Christians focus on God the Father or on the Lord Jesus Christ. Even though we make the Sign of the Cross daily, we might forget about the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity — almost like we forget about the air we breathe. But the Spirit is important and should be like the air we breathe. Next Sunday (Trinity Sunday), I will teach on the Holy Spirit’s function within the Godhead, within the Trinity Himself. However, today I would like to focus on His gifts and on His fruits. The Father and the Son “breathe” the Holy Spirit, and we receive Him at Baptism and in a new way at Confirmation. (He also comes to us in the other sacraments but in a different way). Do any of you remember what the “Gifts of the Holy Spirit” are? There are seven: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, Fear of the Lord. These are gifts because we do not have them naturally, and we need them to be faithful to the Lord. So, we receive these gifts as the Breath of God. They enter into us, and we breathe them out, that is, we respirate them. The way they are respirated are by way of the “Fruits of the Holy Spirit.” Do you remember all of them? (Don’t worry, I don’t either ;-). However, St. Paul speaks of them in the second reading today: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Gal 5:22-23). These are signs of a life in Christ, a life motivated by the Holy Spirit, a life as an adopted son or daughter of God. Of course, we like talking about these. However, we also need to talk about what “works of the flesh” are. Now, remember: the “flesh” is good because Christ assumed it and redeemed it. When Scripture talks about “works of the flesh,” however, it is speaking of living for pleasure instead of for God. And what are these? St. Paul says they are obvious: immorality, impurity, lust, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, out-bursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like (Gal 5:19-21). Notice, St. Paul does not condemn sex or alcohol or private opinions; but only when a person lives for these things instead of for Christ. These addictions/abuses suffo-cate us spiritually and cut off the life of the Spirit within us.
In the holy gospel (Jn 15:26-27), Christ wants to share with us everything He has been giv-en from the Father — especially the life of the Holy Spirit. But unless we are serious with our-selves about the temptations of the flesh that still assault us, we will not be able to receive — we will not be able to open/ — this promise gift. Let us breathe in this gift in today’s Mass and resolve not to suffocate Him. Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.

El Aliento de Dios
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, ¿Alguna vez han estado nadando y, por cualquier razón, sienten como si les faltara el aire? Sin duda es de dar miedo. Normalmente, día a día, es raro pensar en el aire que respiramos a no ser que luchemos con problemas de asma, enfisema, u otros problemas respiratorios. Hoy, Domin-go de Pentecostés, tenemos la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre el Espíritu Santo que es el Aliento de Dios. Con frecuencia, nosotros como Católicos Cristianos nos enfocamos en Dios Padre o en nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Aunque hacemos la Señal de la Cruz diariamente, podemos olvidarnos de la Tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad -- casi como nos olvidamos del aire que respiramos. Pero el Espíritu es importante y debe ser tan importante como el aire que respiramos. El próximo Domingo (Domingo de la Santísima Trinidad), les enseñaré sobre la función del Es-píritu Santo dentro de la Mente de Dios, dentro de la Trinidad Misma. Sin embargo, hoy quisiera concentrarme en Sus dones y en Sus frutos. El Padre y el Hijo "respiran" al Espíritu Santo, y noso-tros Lo recibimos en el Bautismo y en una forma nueva en la Confirmación. (Él también viene a no-sotros en los otros sacramentos pero en diferente forma). ¿Alguno de ustedes recuerda cuáles son los "Dones del Espíritu Santo"? Son siete: Sabiduría, Entendimiento, Consejo, Fortaleza, Conoci-miento, Piedad, Temor de Dios. Estos son dones porque no los tenemos naturalmente, y los necesi-tamos para ser fieles al Señor. De modo que nosotros recibimos estos dones como el Aliento de Dios. Ellos entran en noso-tros y nosotros lo expiramos, es decir, lo respiramos. La manera en que lo respiramos es por medio de los "Frutos del Espíritu Santo." ¿Ustedes recuerdan todos de ellos? (No se preocupen, yo tam-poco ;-). Sin embargo, San Pablo habla de ellos en la segunda lectura de hoy: amor, gozo, paz, pa-ciencia, bondad, generosidad, fidelidad, amabilidad, auto control (Gálatas 5:22-23). Estos son sig-nos de una vida en Cristo, una vida motivada por el Espíritu Santo, una vida como hijo o hija adopti-vos de Dios. Por supuesto, nos gusta hablar sobre esos. Sin embargo, también necesitamos hablar sobre cuáles son las "obras de la carne". Ahora, recuerden: la "carne" es buena porque Cristo la asumió y la redimió. Cuando las Escrituras hablan de "lo que proviene de la carne", sin embargo, se refiere a vivir por placeres en vez de vivir por Dios. ¿Y cuáles son esas? San Pablo dice que son obvias: fornicación, impurezas, desvergüenzas; culto de ídolos y hechicería; odios, ira y violencias; celos, furores, ambiciones, divisiones, sectarismo y envidias; borracheras, orgías y cosas semejan-tes (Gal 5:19-21). Noten que San Pablo no condena el sexo ni el alcohol ni las opiniones privadas; sino solo cuando una persona vive por esas cosas en vez de vivir por Cristo. Estos abusos/adicciones nos sofocan espiritualmente y desconectan la vida del Espíritu dentro de nosotros. En el santo evangelio (Juan 15:26-27), Cristo quiere compartir con nosotros todo lo que Él ha recibido del Padre — especialmente la vida del Espíritu Santo. Pero mientras nosotros mismos no tomemos en serio las tentaciones de la carne que aún nos asaltan, no lo podremos recibir — no po-dremos abrir — este regalo prometido. Inspiremos este don en la Misa de hoy y resolvamos no so-focarlo. Ven, Espíritu Santo. Llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego del amor.
