Thursday, October 10, Day 9: A TASTE OF SPANISH FOOD AND WINE This morning we drive to O Grove for a boat ride along the Ria de Arousa to learn about the mussels’ production for which this area is famous. How about a breakfast of local mussel delicacies? We visit a Spanish winery and enjoy a tasting of Albarino wine with lunch. When we arrive in the Finisterre, also known as the end of the world, as pilgrims in the ancient days could walk no further than this point, we have time to explore, watch the fishing boats come and go on a sea so calm that you wouldn’t believe you were on the untamed Coast of Death. Be sure to stop at the Romanesque chapel, dedicated to the much-worshipped figure of Christ, known as the Cristo da Barba Dourada (literally, ‘Christ with the Golden Beard’). According to legend, it was thrown overboard from a sinking boat and washed up on the beach. Don’t miss the chance to see for yourselves whether what they say is true: that the figure’s hair and nails grow. We return to Santiago for dinner and overnight. (B, Special lunch, D)

Both groups will congregate at the Monte del Gozo from which the spires of the magnificent Cathedral of St. James are visible. Formed by Galician granite, this Cathedral is one of the finest architectural examples in Europe as it encompasses Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. The Cathedral contains numerous, valuable pieces of art that truly captivate the eye. It is traditional to hug the statue of St. James upon entering the Cathedral. Our private, guided walking tour takes us into the crypt where the relics of the Patron Saint of Pilgrims are kept. We return to the Cathedral to attend the 7:30 pm Pilgrims’ Mass with the Botafumeiro. Return to the hotel tonight for our Farewell Dinner and overnight in Santiago de Com-postella.
