THE FACT OF THE ASSUMPTION: Regarding

the day, year and manner of Our

Lady’s death, nothing certain is

known. Our Catholic faith,

however, has always derived our

knowledge of the mystery from

Apostolic Tradition. The dates

assigned for it vary. Two cities claim to be the

place of her departure, Jerusalem and Ephesus.

Common consent favors Jerusalem, where her

tomb is shown. The first six centuries did not

know of the tomb of Mary at Jerusalem. In 451

St. Juvenal, Bishop of Jerusalem, at the Council of

Chalcedon, made know that Mary died in the

presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb,

when opened, upon the request of St. Thomas, was

found empty; wherefrom the Apostles concluded

that the body was taken up to Heaven. Today the

belief in the physical Assumption of Mary is

universal in the East and West according to Pope

Benedict XIV it is a probable opinion, which to

deny is blasphemous. Ref: Catholic Encyclopedia

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven,

informally known as The Assumption, according to

the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and

parts of Anglicanism, was the bodily taking up of

the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her

earthly life.

OUTSIDE THE PARISH SERRA CLUB OF YOUNGSTOWN is a lay

organization whose members, Catholic lay men and

women and permanent deacons, have joined

together to foster vocations to the priesthood

and religious life and to further Catholicism

through their own Christian vocations to service.

The Serra movement is international in scope,

Catholic in emphasis and character and

democratic in practice. Its name was taken from

Blessed Junipero Serra, the noted Spanish

Franciscan missionary, who played a leading part

in early missionary work in Mexico and the

Western United States. If you would be

interested in joining this group to help promote

priestly and religious vocations throughout the

diocese, or you just want some more information,

please contact Joe Nudo at 330-758-4467.

RETROUVAILLE (pronounced retro-vi) has

helped tens of thousands of couples at all stages

of disillusionment or misery in their marriage.

The next program in the Diocese of Youngstown

begins August 22nd at the Villa Maria Center in PA.

Limited Space, please call early. For

confidential information, or to register call 330-

979-7787 or visit www.HelpOurMarriage.com.

LET US TAKE TIME: To give God worship, service and

communion.

To live with our friends while we have

them.

A coffin is a poor place for the warm

handclasp and the cheery greeting.

To forgive our enemies. Jesus found time

to do it between the blows of the hammer.

To go slower uphill when we are young, and

downhill when we are old.
