May 28th, 2017 – Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
Readings: Acts 1:1-11; Psalms 47 “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord”;
Ephesians 1:17-23; Matthew 28:16-20
Brother and Sisters of St. Eugene Catholic Mission,
The Easter season for this year has almost ended; the solemnity celebrated today calls each of us to be close to where
Jesus is with his disciples as he gives them the last instructions before his return to the Father.
Certainly for the disciples this moment was not wished by them, they wanted to have some more time with the Lord,
to learn a little more from him, however, it is necessary for him to go, that the Holy Spirit, the advocate, the consoler,
come upon them (John 14: 16-17), as they have to go forth and to announce the gospel to all the nations (Matthew 28:
19). However, to contemplate about the Ascension of the Lord Jesus into heaven, some may think it is a joke: but
why? Because for some people want to understand it from the elements of physics rather than understanding it
through faith. As the disciples proclaimed their faith in Christ as God and Lord, we too have to do the same, with no
fear of those who cannot yet understand why we believe.
“The Church Fathers used to call the Ascension the "hope of the body," because this Christian event guarantees the
triumph of life over death. Man's existence is not just a road looking forward, in the limited sense of economic and
scientific progress, but it is a road leading upward to complete human fulfillment. That is why we should commit our-
selves to seeking the joys of Heaven, as St Paul exhorts us: "If then you have risen with Christ, seek the things that
are above" (Colossians 3:1-2).” (Source: https://www.epriest.com/homily_packs/spanish/25#english: )
The importance to “seek by what is above” is not only seeing Christ going up into heaven, it is a calling to look around
us and see those who are with us on the path of God, helping them on their journey of faith, despite differences of
opinion.

www.epriest.com/homily_packs/spanish/25#english).

Step Up For Students is a state-approved nonprofit scholarship funding or-ganization that helps administer two scholarships for Florida schoolchildren: the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program (FTC) for low-income families
and the Gardiner Scholarship (PLSA) for children with certain special needs. Our Catholic schools accept Step Up scholarships, which can be applied for through an online application. Applications are open for both new and renewal families for the 2017-18 school year. Step Up anticipates funding 105,000 scholarships for next school year and have already awarded more than 70,000 scholarships, so it is important that interested families apply
ASAP. The deadline to apply for FTC scholarships has been extended to May 31. This means entire applications must be completed, including the submission of all documentation. The deadline is early this year as we’re
doing everything we can to process and award all scholarships prior to school beginning in August. Currently, the turnaround time for new applica-
tions is about three weeks. While they still give priority to the lowest income bracket, Step Up has be-gun awarding students of higher income families who qualify for the 88% scholarship. Families could be eligible for partial scholarship funding
with income even as high as 260% of the federal poverty level. If you have any questions about the Step Up scholarships or have interest in a Catholic education for your child, please call your local Catholic school
and speak with its principal. Application link: https://www.stepupforstudents.org/logins/

BULLETIN BLURB The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us that doctor-assisted suicide abandons vulnerable individuals, enables suicide, escalates sui-cide and, by legalizing doctor-assisted suicide, we wrongly communicate that some lives are not worth living. “Every suicide is tragic. We don't discourage suicide by assisting suicide. The patient requesting assisted suicide is often asking, ‘Does anyone want me to be alive, or care enough to talk me out of this request and support me through this difficult time?’” http://www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/respect-life-program/2016/every-suicide-is-tragic.cfm

The six benefits that are received through the Sacrament of Confession are: 1. Reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers his state of grace; 2. Reconciliation with the Church; 3. The remission of the eternal punishment incurred through mortal sins; 4. The remission, at least in part, of temporal punishments resulting from sin; 5. Peace and serenity of conscience, and spiritual consolation; 6. An increase of spiritual strength for the Christian battle. By approaching the Sacrament of Confession, the penitent obtains pardon from God's mercy for the sins he has committed against God, therefore being reconciled with the Holy Catholic Church which was wounded by the shipwreck of one of its members. (C.C.C. # 1422, 1496) For more on the Church's teaching on Confession, go to: http://www.catholic.org/prayers/prayer.php?p=680.
